[0053] Although battery cells according to the present disclosure are shown in the context of an electric vehicle, the battery cells may be used in stationary applications and / or other applications.
[0054] As described above, the battery cell includes a cathode electrode, an anode electrode, a separator and an electrolyte arranged in a housing. The cathode electrode includes a cathode active material layer (including a cathode active material) arranged on a cathode current collector. In some examples, the cathode active material layer includes a nickel-rich (Ni-rich) cathode active material, a binder and a conductive additive.
[0055] Nickel-rich cathode electrodes can experience side reactions with the electrolyte, transition metal ion dissolution, layer-to-spinel phase transformation, and / or microcrack formation. To reduce problems associated with side reactions, the outer surface of the cathode active material is coated with a thin surface layer to improve battery cycle life. However, the coating increases the complexity of cathode manufacturing and energy use.
[0056] The present disclosure relates to cathode electrodes and methods for making cathode electrodes with improved cycling stability. The cathode electrode incorporates an ion conductive additive and / or an ion conductor precursor in a slurry mixture to form a coating of a cathode active material layer. When an ion conductor precursor (e.g., Al 2 O 3 ), which forms Li conductive oxides (e.g., LiAlO) in situ in the battery cell during cycling. 2 ). By adding ion conductor precursors, the cathode electrode exhibits higher ionic conductivity and increased cycling stability. In some examples, a small amount of Al 2 O 3 (eg, 5 wt% of the cathode active material layer.) This approach avoids the complex manufacturing steps and / or high energy usage required to coat a surface with cathode active material.
[0057] The battery cells including the cathode electrodes described herein have improved electrochemical properties, including higher ionic conductivity and increased cycling stability. The blended ion conductor precursors do not block the electron channels on the surface of the cathode active material particles. In contrast, since the coating covers the outer surface of the cathode active material particles, the coating blocks the electron channels, which reduces the energy density of the cathode electrode.
[0058] Reference now Figure 1 , the battery cell 10 includes C cathode electrodes 20, A anode electrodes 40, and S separators 32 arranged in a predetermined order in a battery cell stack 12. The battery cell stack 12 is located in a housing 50 including a lithium-based electrolyte, wherein C, S, and A are integers greater than zero. The C cathode electrodes 20-1, 20-2, ..., and 20-C include a cathode active material layer 24 arranged on one or both sides of a cathode current collector 26.
[0059] During the charge / discharge process, the A anode electrodes 40 and the C cathode electrodes 20 exchange lithium ions. [0060] A anode electrodes 40-1, 40-2, ... and 40-A include an anode active material layer 42 disposed on one or both sides of an anode current collector 46. In the process of manufacturing the cathode active material layer 22, the cathode active material 70 including the Ni-rich cathode active material is blended with the binder 74, the conductive additive 76, and the solvent to produce a slurry. After the slurry is deposited on the current collector, heat can be applied to remove the solvent. In some examples, the ion conductive additive 76 accounts for 0.1 wt % to 10 wt % of the cathode active material layer 22.
[0063] For example, an ion-conducting precursor (e.g., Al 2 O 3 ) is added to a mixture comprising a Ni-rich cathode active material, a binder, and a solvent. In some examples, the mixture is mixed at a mixing speed ranging from 500 to 3000 rpm for 2 to 10 minutes. In some examples, Al 2 O 3 The particle size of Al is in the range of 5 nm to 3 μm. 2 O 3The particle size is in the range of 0.5 μm to 3 μm.
[0064] In some examples, the cathode with the ion conductive precursor is exposed to an electrolyte (any lithium-containing electrolyte) and / or reacts with residual lithium on the surface of the cathode active material. When the battery cell is cycled, the ion conductive precursor is converted to an ion conductor in situ by electrochemical conversion. [0068] Reference now Figure 3 , showing the variation of specific capacity (mAh / g) with cycles for a battery cell having a conventional nickel-rich cathode electrode at 110 and a battery cell having a nickel-rich cathode electrode including an ion conductive additive according to the present disclosure at 112. In this example, the conventional nickel-rich battery cell includes NCMA as an active material. The nickel-rich battery cell including an ion conductive additive includes NCMA (95 wt %) and Al 2 O 3 The specific capacity of the conventional nickel-rich battery cell decreases at a rate of 2.6% per 100 cycles. The specific capacity of the nickel-rich battery cell containing the ion conductive additive decreases at a rate of 1.3% per 100 cycles, with a decay of about 50% less per 100 cycles. The specific capacity of the battery cell with the conventional nickel-rich cathode electrode is 189.1 mAh / g at 100 cycles. [0069] Reference now Figure 4 and Figure 5 , the impedance is shown to vary with frequency. Ds corresponds to the 2 / Siemens(cm 2 / s) of the lithium ion diffusion rate. Re(Z) is the measured value corresponding to the real part of the EIS impedance. σ can be calculated from the second function (as follows), and then Ds can be calculated accordingly:
[0070]
[0071]
[0072] where ω is the frequency (x-axis), Re(Z) is the real part of the EIS impedance, R is the gas constant, Rs is the internal contact resistance of the battery, A is the area, n is the number of electrons transferred, T is the absolute temperature, F is the Faraday constant, Cs is the concentration of lithium ions in the solid phase, and R ct is the charge transfer resistance, and σ is the Warburg coefficient.
