Abstract

The invention relates to a device (106) for operating a safety mechanism (108) of an elevator unit (100). The apparatus (106) includes a frame (202) and a joystick (204) disposed on the frame (202). The joystick (204) is adapted to rotate for moving at least one engagement member (108-1) of the safety mechanism (108) to control movement of an elevator car (102) of the elevator unit (100). The device (106) comprises an actuating element (206) accessible from one end of the joystick (204), and the actuating element (206) is adapted to move telescopically relative to the joystick (204) to allow rotational movement of the joystick (204). The device (106) includes an engagement mechanism (208) formed on the frame (202) and connected to the actuation element (206). The engagement mechanism (208) unlocks or locks the joystick (204) from or in a predetermined position during the rotational movement based on the telescopic movement of the actuation element (206).
