Description

[0001] Thermally bonded elements made of polystyrene foams are used in the Patent EP000002923835A1 (BASF) proposes this. Furthermore, other so-called "bonding" processes are known and in use for this application.

[0002] For example, graphite-colored (gray) polystyrene block foam cutouts are heated and softened by using both contact surfaces of the polystyrene surfaces to be joined by means of heat radiation and / or so-called heat swords heated on all sides, also by contact, pressed together promptly and thus joined together.

[0003] In all of these known “bonding” processes, an undesired volume of the polystyrene is lost on both heated contact surfaces and / or, in the case of freshly produced polystyrene foam elements, an uncontrollable post-expansion occurs in the polystyrene foam itself.

[0004] The task is to keep these changes, which cannot be precisely controlled, such as the loss of polystyrene volume and / or the subsequent expansion, as low as possible and, according to the invention, to predetermine them only on one of the two contact surfaces.

[0005] In this process, only one of the contact surfaces to be joined is subjected to direct contact heat between 180 degrees Celsius and 210 degrees Celsius, which softens the structure of the polystyrene foam, and then fused firmly within just three seconds by pressing it onto the predetermined, unheated contact surface. The resulting joint cools down 6 seconds after pressing and forms a fracture- and tensile-resistant bond.

[0006] Because this technique can be performed easily, quickly, and even manually, it is also suitable for small series with often different polystyrene foam elements to be joined, thus providing significant cost savings. This is especially true when production using individual molds is the only alternative. QUOTES CONTAINED IN THE DESCRIPTION

Claims

[1] Thermally bonded elements made of polystyrene foams (1), characterized by that at least two polystyrene bodies of the same or different qualities, densities or shapes are joined together and consist of polystyrene foam such as polystyrene block foam, polystyrene molding or extruded polystyrene foam. Whereby only one of the polystyrene bodies has a significantly increased polystyrene material compaction (2) of its polystyrene material at the contact adhesive surface, which has been caused by thermal contact heat exposure, and the respective second (3), directly connected contact adhesive surface has only received the transferred heat exposure of the above-mentioned, connected polystyrene contact adhesive surface (4) and the direct rigid connection has been made upon cooling.
