Description

Technical area

[0001] The invention relates to a battery heat shield for protecting a battery environment. Furthermore, the invention relates to a battery housing for accommodating at least one battery cell and to a battery module for an electric vehicle. Devices of the type mentioned can be used generally in the field of electrical energy storage, such as in the field of electrical and / or electrochemical energy storage, e.g., in electrically operated units. In particular, the invention can be applied in the field of electromobility, such as in fuel cell, hybrid, and / or electric vehicles, e.g., in cars and / or trucks. However, other fields of application are also conceivable in principle. Technical background

[0002] Batteries, especially lithium-ion batteries, are at risk of thermal runaway if they overheat, i.e., undergoing an exothermic, self-sustaining decomposition reaction between the cathode and anode. Typically, when a battery cell experiences thermal runaway, especially at the beginning of the reaction, hot, particle-laden gases, usually with temperatures exceeding 1,300°C, develop. These gases can generally cause significant damage if they escape from the battery cell. In addition to the release of normally flammable electrolyte and decomposition gases from the battery material, such as CO2, CO, and H2, the resulting thermal energy typically heats neighboring battery cells to such an extent that thermal runaway is also triggered in them. This chain reaction generally increases the amount of flammable gases and typically leads to fires and / or explosions.

[0003] A variety of heat shields, also referred to as thermal insulation, and methods for their production are known from the prior art, which are intended to protect a battery environment in the event of a thermal runaway of the battery and to prevent a chain reaction.

[0004] WO 2022 / 141035 A1 describes a method for thermally insulating adjacent battery cells, typically lithium-ion battery cells, with a self-leveling, non-syntactic silicone foam composition, a battery module with thermally insulated adjacent battery cells obtained or obtainable by the aforementioned method, and the use of the composition in the thermal insulation of adjacent battery cells in a battery module and the uses of the battery modules.

[0005] Further fire protection coatings and fire protection covers are known from DE 20 2020 103 596 U1. The fire protection coating for a battery assembly of an electric vehicle comprises an epoxy resin layer and a ceramic fiber layer.

[0006] Despite the advantages achieved with the described thermal insulation materials, numerous technical challenges remain. In particular, heat resistance during extended thermal runaway is not always guaranteed. Furthermore, existing solutions are typically expensive and contain materials that are sometimes fraught with sociopolitical problems, such as exploitation by minors. Object of the invention

[0007] It would therefore be desirable to provide a battery heat shield, a battery housing, and a battery module that at least largely avoid the disadvantages of known heat shields and thermal insulation. In particular, the aim is to provide affordable, reliable protection of the battery environment without socio-political problems. General description of the invention

[0008] This problem is addressed by a battery heat shield, a battery housing, and a battery module having the features of the independent patent claims. Advantageous further developments, which can be implemented individually or in any combination, are presented in the dependent claims.

[0009] In the following, the terms "have", "have", "comprise" or "include" or any grammatical variations thereof are used in a non-exclusive manner. Accordingly, these terms can refer both to situations in which, apart from the features introduced by these terms, no further features are present, or to situations in which one or more further features are present. For example, the expression "A has B", "A has B", "A comprises B" or "A includes B" can refer both to the situation in which, apart from B, no further element is present in A (i.e., a situation in which A consists exclusively of B), and to the situation in which, in addition to B, one or more further elements are present in A, for example element C, elements C and D, or even further elements.

[0010] Furthermore, it should be noted that the terms "at least one" and "one or more," as well as grammatical variations of these terms, when used in connection with one or more elements or features and intended to express that the element or feature may be provided singly or multiple times, are generally used only once, for example, when the feature or element is first introduced. When the feature or element is subsequently mentioned again, the corresponding term "at least one" or "one or more" is generally no longer used, without limiting the possibility that the feature or element may be provided singly or multiple times.

[0011] Furthermore, the terms “preferably”, “in particular”, “for example” or similar terms are used hereinafter in connection with optional features, without limiting alternative embodiments. Thus, features introduced by these terms are optional features, and these features are not intended to limit the scope of the claims and in particular the independent claims. Thus, as those skilled in the art will recognize, the invention can also be carried out using other embodiments. Similarly, features introduced by “in one embodiment of the invention” or by “in an embodiment of the invention” are understood to be optional features, without limiting alternative embodiments or the scope of the independent claims.Furthermore, these introductory expressions are intended to leave untouched all possibilities of combining the features introduced thereby with other features, whether optional or non-optional.

[0012] In a first aspect of the present invention, a battery heat shield is proposed for protecting a battery environment, for example, a vehicle interior of an electric vehicle. The battery heat shield comprises at least two components, wherein the first component is a fully or partially cross-linked silicone matrix and the second component is at least one component having a melting temperature T S containing clay mineral as a filler. T S is T S ≥ 1600°C. For example, T S also T S ≥ 1700°C.

[0013] The term "battery heat shield," as used here, is a broad term to which its usual and common meaning should be attributed, as understood by those skilled in the art. The term is not limited to a specific or adapted meaning. The term can, without limitation, refer in particular to a thermally insulating layer. In particular, the battery heat shield can have a flat, layered configuration. The battery heat shield can comprise at least one layer. A structure of the battery heat shield consisting of several layers is also possible.

[0014] The battery heat shield can be configured, in particular, to protect the battery's surroundings. For example, the battery heat shield can be configured to prevent hot gases generated in the battery cell during thermal runaway from escaping from the battery housing described below. For example, the battery heat shield can form at least one layer of the battery housing, for example, a ply.

[0015] The term “silicone matrix,” as used here, is a broad term to which its usual and common meaning should be given, as understood by a person skilled in the art. The term is not limited to a specific or adapted meaning. The term can, without limitation, refer in particular to a shaping structure comprising silicone, for example synthetic polymers in which silicon atoms are linked via oxygen atoms, and in which at least one further material is embedded, for example referred to as a filler. The silicone matrix can, for example, undergo a curing process through a crosslinking reaction of these polymers, also referred to as hardening. In particular, the silicone matrix can be convertible from a liquid and / or moldable state into a dimensionally stable and / or fixed state through the crosslinking reaction. The filler, such as clay mineral, can be introduced into the silicone matrix in a liquid and / or moldable state. In the dimensionally stable and / or rigid state, the distribution of the filler in the silicone matrix can then remain unaltered.

[0016] For example, the silicone matrix may only be dimensionally stable and / or rigid when fully or partially crosslinked. The terms “dimensionally stable” and “dimensionally stable” in relation to the silicone matrix can, without limitation, refer in particular to a strength of the silicone matrix at which no deformation occurs due to the effect of gravity alone. For example, under the effect of gravity, the dimensionally stable and / or rigid silicone matrix can therefore retain its shape and / or form, in particular without further stabilizing measures being taken. In particular, under the effect of gravity, a distribution and / or orientation of the filler embedded in the silicone matrix, for example clay mineral, can be stable in the dimensionally stable and / or rigid state of the silicone matrix, i.e., it cannot undergo any change.

[0017] The term "fully or partially crosslinked silicone matrix" as used herein is a broad term to which its ordinary and customary meaning should be given, as understood by one skilled in the art. The term is not limited to any specific or adapted meaning. The term may, without limitation, refer in particular to a silicone matrix having a degree of crosslinking in the range of 50% to 100%. For example, the fully or partially crosslinked silicone matrix may have a degree of crosslinking in the range of 70% to 100%. For example, the fully or partially crosslinked silicone matrix may have a degree of crosslinking in the range of 85% to 100%. As the degree of crosslinking increases, the restriction of diffusivity increases.

[0018] The silicone matrix of the first component can, for example, comprise at least one material selected from the group consisting of silicone resin, fluorosilicone, silicone rubber, room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone rubber, RTV one-component silicone rubber (RTV1) and RTV two-component silicone rubber (RTV2).

[0019] In particular, the silicone matrix can have a viscosity in the range of 0.1 Pa s to 10,000 Pa s at room temperature before undergoing the curing process, for example, upon introduction of the second component, i.e., the clay minerals, into the silicone matrix. For example, the viscosity of the silicone matrix before curing at room temperature can be in the range of 200 Pa s to 5,000 Pa s.

[0020] The fully or partially cross-linked silicone matrix, i.e. after undergoing the curing process, can have a hardness determined according to DIN 53505 in the range of 5 Shore A to 80 Shore A. For example, the fully or partially cross-linked silicone matrix can have a hardness determined according to DIN 53505 in the range of 20 Shore A to 60 Shore A.

[0021] The fully or partially cross-linked silicone matrix, i.e. after passing through the curing process, can have a density determined according to ISO 2781 in the range of 0.95 g / cm 3 up to 1.6 g / cm 3 . The maximum density in the case of LSR silicones can be over 1.5 g / cm 3 lay.

[0022] The clay mineral of the second component can, for example, comprise at least one material selected from the group consisting of phyllosilicate, bentonite, montmorillonite, illite, and kaolinite. In particular, the clay mineral can be bentonite. For example, the clay mineral can, in particular, comprise at least one of montmorillonite, illite, and kaolinite. Particularly preferred phyllosilicates are bentonite, montmorillonite, and / or illite.

[0023] In particular, the clay mineral may be present in the form of flakes in the silicone matrix. The term "flake," as used herein, is a broad term to which its ordinary and common meaning should be given, as understood by those skilled in the art. The term is not limited to any specific or adapted meaning. The term may, without limitation, refer in particular to a flat, sheet-like and / or layer-like shape of any material. Thus, clay mineral flakes may, in particular, be clay minerals that have a flat, sheet-like and / or layer-like shape and / or form, for example, present in a layered crystal structure.

[0024] In particular, the clay minerals present as filler in the silicone matrix can be arranged at an angle of up to 20° parallel to at least one surface of the silicone matrix. For example, the clay mineral flakes can be arranged in the silicone matrix such that they are tilted by up to 20° with respect to at least one surface of the silicone matrix. For example, the clay mineral flakes can be arranged parallel to at least one surface of the silicone matrix, for example parallel to a layered configuration of the battery heat shield, for example deviating from a parallel by up to 20°. The orientation of the particles contributes positively to the functionality of the coating, but does not exclusively determine it.

[0025] The clay mineral present as a filler in the silicone matrix can be homogeneously distributed throughout the silicone matrix. The clay minerals present as fillers in the silicone matrix can therefore exhibit a homogeneous filler distribution. The clay minerals can exhibit an isotropic or anisotropic filler orientation. In particular, the clay minerals present as fillers in the silicone matrix can exhibit an isotropic filler orientation. The silicone matrix enriched with the filler can therefore exhibit the same mechanical properties in all directions. Alternatively, the clay minerals present as fillers in the silicone matrix can also exhibit an anisotropic filler orientation. The silicone matrix enriched with the filler can therefore, due to the distribution and / or orientation of the clay minerals, exhibit different mechanical properties depending on the direction, for example one or more properties of density, viscosity, elasticity and hardness.

[0026] The battery heat shield may further comprise at least one third component. This third component may, for example, comprise at least one material selected from the group consisting of graphite, in particular graphite flakes; iron, in particular iron powder; and hydroxide, in particular aluminum hydroxide and / or magnesium hydroxide.

[0027] The battery heat shield may comprise at least 40 wt.% of the second component or a combination of the second and at least one third component. For example, the battery heat shield may comprise at least 50 wt.% of the second component or a combination of the second and at least one third component. In particular, the battery heat shield may comprise at least 60 wt.% of the second component or a combination of the second and at least one third component. By adding a third component, additional properties, such as recyclability or behavior under long-term thermal stress, can be improved.

[0028] For example, the second component and / or the combination of the second and at least one third component can make up a proportion in the range of 40 wt.% to 90 wt.% of the battery heat shield. For example, the second component and / or the combination of the second and at least one third component can make up a proportion in the range of 50 wt.% to 90 wt.% of the battery heat shield. For example, the second component and / or the combination of the second and at least one third component can make up a proportion in the range of 60 wt.% to 90 wt.% of the battery heat shield.

[0029] For example, the battery heat shield may comprise a maximum of 50 wt.% of the first component. For example, the battery heat shield may comprise a maximum of 40 wt.% of the first component. In particular, the battery heat shield may comprise a maximum of 35 wt.% of the first component.

[0030] The battery heat shield can, for example, have a maximum thickness of 2 mm in at least one dimension. For example, the battery heat shield can have a thickness in the range of 1 mm to 2 mm in at least one dimension. In particular, the battery heat shield can have a maximum thickness of 1.5 mm in at least one dimension. For example, the battery heat shield can have a thickness in the range of 1 mm to 1.5 mm in at least one dimension.

[0031] In a further aspect of the present invention, a battery housing for accommodating at least one battery cell, for example, a battery cell of an electric vehicle, is proposed. The battery housing comprises at least one battery receiving device, for example, a frame, for at least partially accommodating the at least one battery cell, as well as at least one battery heat shield according to the present invention, for example, according to one or more of the embodiments described above and / or according to one or more of the embodiments described in more detail below.

[0032] For explanations, examples and definitions relating to the battery heat shield, reference is made to the battery heat shield explanations listed herein.

[0033] The term “battery casing” as used here is a broad term to which its usual and common meaning should be given, as understood by a person skilled in the art. The term is not limited to a specific or adapted meaning. The term can, without limitation, refer in particular to a shell that completely or partially encloses and mechanically stabilizes at least one anode and at least one cathode of a battery cell. In particular, the battery casing in the present case can, for example, be made from at least one rigid material, for example from at least one metallic material and / or at least one plastic. For example, the battery casing can be constructed from multiple layers.

[0034] For example, the battery housing can comprise the at least one battery heat shield such that the battery heat shield forms at least a part of the battery housing. For example, the battery housing can comprise the at least one battery heat shield as a coating applied to at least part of its surface. The battery heat shield can therefore be a coating applied to at least part of the battery housing. Alternatively or additionally, the at least one battery heat shield can also be fixed and / or attached to at least part of a surface of the battery housing by means of adhesion, for example, glued thereto. Furthermore, alternatively or additionally, in the case of a multi-layer structure of the battery housing, the at least one battery heat shield can also be at least a part of at least one layer of the battery housing.

[0035] The at least one battery heat shield can, for example, be arranged such that the battery heat shield of the battery housing, after installation of the battery housing in an electric vehicle, is positioned between the battery cell that can be accommodated in the battery receiving device and a vehicle interior of the electric vehicle or between the battery cell and a road surface.

[0036] Additionally or alternatively, the at least one battery heat shield can be arranged in front of a vent opening of the battery cell that can be accommodated in the battery receiving device.

[0037] For example, the battery module can comprise at least two battery heat shields, wherein the at least two battery heat shields can be arranged at different locations, for example on opposite sides, of the battery housing. In particular, the battery module can comprise at least four battery heat shields arranged at different locations of the battery housing.

[0038] In a further aspect of the present invention, a battery module for an electric vehicle is proposed. The battery module comprises at least one battery housing according to the present invention, for example according to one or more of the embodiments described above and / or according to one or more of the embodiments described in more detail below, and at least one battery cell accommodated in the battery receiving device of the battery housing.

[0039] For explanations, examples and definitions relating to the battery housing, reference is made to the explanations relating to the battery housing set out herein.

[0040] The proposed battery heat shield for protecting a battery environment, the proposed battery housing, and the proposed battery module offer numerous advantages over known devices of the aforementioned type. In particular, the proposed devices can enable weight reduction and thus a reduction in emissions. For example, a low dead weight, e.g., due to thinner materials, and a targeted positioning of the battery heat shield can achieve a lower weight than conventional devices.

[0041] Furthermore, the proposed devices can enable a cost reduction compared to conventional devices due to the use of silicone and clay minerals.

[0042] The proposed devices can furthermore exhibit improved properties for successful recycling and flame resistance compared to conventional devices. For example, the third component can be used to adjust further advantageous properties of the battery heat shield, such as magnetizability to facilitate separation during recycling and / or flame resistance, particularly under long-term stress.

[0043] In summary, without limiting further possible embodiments, the following embodiments are proposed: Embodiment 1. Short description of the characters

[0044] Further details and features will become apparent from the following description of exemplary embodiments, particularly in conjunction with the subclaims. The respective features can be implemented individually or in combination with one another. The invention is not limited to the exemplary embodiments. The exemplary embodiments are illustrated schematically in the figures. Identical reference numerals in the individual figures designate identical or functionally identical elements, or elements that correspond to one another in terms of their functions.

[0045] In detail: Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 various embodiments of a battery module comprising different embodiments of a battery housing with an embodiment of a battery heat shield in a sectional view from the side; and Fig. 3 a section of an embodiment of a battery heat shield in a sectional view. Description of the embodiments

[0046] Fig. 1 shows a schematic sectional view of an embodiment of a battery module 110 for an electric vehicle. The battery module 110 comprises at least one battery housing 112 and, in this embodiment, five battery cells 114, which are accommodated in a battery receiving device 116 of the battery housing 112. The battery housing 112 comprises the battery receiving device 116, for example in the form of a frame, and at least one battery heat shield 118. In the illustrated embodiment, the battery heat shield 118 is applied to a part of the surface 120 of the battery receiving device 116, in particular a surface 120 facing an interior of the battery receiving device 116. In particular, the surface 120 in this embodiment is coated with the battery heat shield 118. The battery housing 112 comprises, in the Fig. 1, the at least one battery heat shield 118 has a coating applied to at least part of its surface 120.

[0047] In Fig. 2 shows another exemplary embodiment of an exemplary embodiment of a battery module 110 for an electric vehicle in a schematic sectional view, wherein, by way of example, a single battery cell 114 is accommodated in the battery receiving device 116 of the battery housing 112. In this exemplary embodiment, the battery heat shield 118 is a layer of the battery housing 112, for example, a layer of a cover 122 of the battery housing 112. Other arrangements of the battery heat shield 118 on the battery receiving device 116 or any other desired part of the battery housing 112, not shown here, are also conceivable.

[0048] Both in Fig. 1 as well as in Fig. 2 shows, by way of example, a thermal runaway of one of the battery cells 114, by means of a schematic representation of a jet 124 of hot, particle-laden gases, which, for example, exit from a vent 126 of the battery cell 114. The at least one battery heat shield 118 can, for example, be arranged on the battery receiving device 116 such that it is positioned in front of the vent 126 of the battery cells 114 in order to prevent the gases from escaping from the battery housing 112. Alternatively or additionally, the battery heat shield 118 can also be positioned such that the gases remain in the battery cell 114 and cannot escape from the battery cell 114.

[0049] Fig.Figure 3 shows a section of an embodiment of a battery heat shield 118 for protecting a battery environment in a sectional view. The battery heat shield 118 comprises at least two components, wherein the first component is a fully or partially cross-linked silicone matrix 128 and the second component is at least one with a melting temperature T S comprising clay mineral 130 as filler, wherein T S ≥ 1600°C, for example T S ≥ 1700°C.

[0050] The clay mineral 130 can be present, in particular, in the form of flakes 132 in the silicone matrix 128. The clay mineral flakes 130 can be arranged, for example, at an angle of a maximum of 20° parallel to at least one surface 134 of the silicone matrix. For example, with this arrangement, the flakes 132 in the silicone matrix can ensure that, upon exposure to heat, for example, from the jet 124, the battery heat shield 118 gradually peels off in several layers. For example, the battery heat shield 118 can thus be suitable for withstanding the jet 124, for example, for more than 20 seconds, without the gases of the jet 124 being able to pass through the battery heat shield 118 and escape from the battery housing 112.

[0051] For example, the battery heat shield 118 may comprise 50 wt.% acetate-curing silicone. Furthermore, 50 wt.% of the battery heat shield 118, for example, the remaining 50 wt.%, may comprise bentonite as the clay mineral of the second component, as well as graphite flakes, iron powder, for example, for easy recyclability, and magnesium hydroxide, for basic flame retardancy, as the third component.
