Abstract
Description
[0001] The invention relates to a solar fence that serves both as a property boundary and for generating electrical energy through photovoltaic modules. The solar fence has a modular design and allows for flexible adaptation to various terrain conditions. In addition to its use as a property fence, it is also suitable for agricultural photovoltaic applications and can be expanded with additional functions such as visual, noise, and wind protection.
[0002] Common solar fences typically use standardized designs in which photovoltaic modules are mounted between permanently installed fence posts. This design requires precise placement of the fence posts to ensure the photovoltaic modules fit properly and allows only small tolerances during installation or adjustments. Therefore, the proper construction of such solar fences requires a comparatively large amount of effort.
[0003] US 2013 / 0340847 A1 describes such a solar fence with integrated photovoltaic modules for energy generation. The solar fence consists of standardized fence panels mounted between the fence posts.
[0004] EP 2 295 651 A1 also discloses a solar fence with horizontal photovoltaic modules mounted between vertical supports. These known solar fence designs lack flexibility in adapting to different module sizes or mounting tolerances.
[0005] Furthermore, modular mounting systems for photovoltaic modules are known, for example, from US 8 225 957 B2 or US 2010 / 0218812 A1, which are designed for rooftop or open-field systems. These systems offer flexibility in module positioning and angle, but are primarily designed for use outside fences. In most cases, they are not specifically designed for the requirements of a fence that functions both as a privacy screen and as a solar power source.
[0006] There are also security fences that independently secure their own power supply through integrated photovoltaic modules. Such systems, such as those described in US 2009 / 0205369 A1 or EP 2 008 288 A1, focus primarily on security and often offer no flexibility regarding module size or mounting positions. The focus is rather on ensuring the electrical power supply for electrical security systems.
[0007] In the field of agri-photovoltaics, there are also systems that use vertically aligned photovoltaic systems to surround agricultural land with solar fences. Such installations often provide protection for plants and animals and enable effective use of the land. However, they are typically limited to a fixed structure and offer little scope for customization or retrofitting. For example, WO 2016 / 101743 A describes a vertically aligned photovoltaic array for agricultural land. Furthermore, DE 10 2014 010 506 A1 discloses a solar fence used as a field boundary on agricultural land; the system described therein has a rigid construction and is less flexible in module orientation and installation.
[0008] There are also solutions for multifunctional noise barriers equipped with solar cells, which are suitable for shielding noise in urban areas. However, these systems are primarily aimed at noise protection and are not specifically designed as fences.
[0009] The current state of the art for solar fences has several limitations in terms of flexibility and adaptability. Conventional solar fences rely on rigid structures in which the photovoltaic modules must be mounted between precisely positioned fence posts. These designs allow only narrow tolerances, making installation time-consuming and complicated, especially on uneven terrain or with varying module sizes. Furthermore, there is a lack of solutions that allow for subsequent adjustment of module orientation or easy expansion for additional functions such as visual, noise, and weather protection. Many existing solar fence concepts also prove inflexible in agricultural photovoltaic applications, as they do not allow sufficient adaptation to the specific needs of agricultural land and land use.
[0010] The object of the invention is to provide a solar fence that offers a flexible and modular structure for energy generation while simultaneously demarcating property boundaries. The solar fence should be easy to install and adaptable to different module sizes and terrain conditions without requiring precise positioning of the fence posts. Furthermore, the solar fence should be versatile and able to integrate additional functions such as visual, noise, wind, or security barriers. The solar fence should also be suitable for agri-photovoltaic applications, thus enabling optimal land use in agricultural environments while providing protection for plants and animals. The goal is to create a solution that stands out from existing technologies through greater flexibility, easy adaptability, and the combined benefit of serving as a solar energy source and multifunctional fencing.
[0011] This object is achieved by a solar fence having the features of claim 1. Advantageous developments of the invention are set out in claims 2 to 18.
[0012] According to the invention, the solar fence according to the invention, which in conventional design has a first fence side and a second fence side opposite the first fence side, has a plurality of photovoltaic modules mounted such that at least on the first fence side, a preferably closed surface is formed from the photovoltaic modules. The solar fence comprises several vertically aligned fence posts formed from a construction profile, to which at least two parallel, horizontally aligned fence bars, each also formed from a construction profile, are attached. Typically, the solar fence has a lower and an upper fence bar. The fence posts and the fence bars form the frame of the solar fence. The fence bars and also the fence posts are preferably C-profiles.
[0013] The solar fence according to the invention thus comprises at least two vertically aligned fence posts and at least two horizontally aligned fence rails, which are attached between the fence posts. The photovoltaic modules are attached to these fence rails in such a way that a closed surface is created, positioned in front of the fence posts and conceals them. This creates a continuous viewing area that is not visually interrupted by the fence posts. This arrangement enables a more flexible and visually appealing installation of photovoltaic modules in solar fence systems, without the fence posts having to be precisely matched to the module sizes of the photovoltaic modules.
[0014] The proposed solar fence is characterized by ease of installation, aesthetic integration, and energy efficiency, while ensuring a robust and flexible structure. These advantages make the solar fence an attractive choice for a wide range of applications, from property demarcation to agri-photovoltaics.
[0015] The solar fence ensures a uniform appearance: Because the photovoltaic modules are mounted in front of the fence posts and conceal them, a closed, continuous visible surface is created. This significantly improves the aesthetics of the solar fence, as the fence posts visually "disappear," and the fence is perceived as a unified structure.
[0016] In addition, the design of the solar fence allows for flexible positioning of the fence posts, as the photovoltaic modules are mounted in front of the fence posts rather than between them. This flexibility simplifies the installation process, as precise adjustment of the fence posts to the module sizes is not required, saving time and money.
[0017] Arranging the photovoltaic modules in front of the fence posts allows for greater tolerance for installation errors. The photovoltaic modules can be installed regardless of minimal deviations in post placement, so minor inaccuracies in the installation of the fence posts do not cause problems. Even with varying post spacing and inclination, secure installation is possible.
[0018] The solar fence also offers the possibility of using the entire fence surface for photovoltaic modules, as there are no gaps created by the fence posts. This maximizes energy generation and increases the efficiency of the solar fence.
[0019] Because the photovoltaic modules are attached to the fence rails and do not need to be positioned directly between the fence posts, it is easier to retrofit additional photovoltaic modules or different module sizes. This allows for flexible adaptation to future requirements or technological updates to the photovoltaic modules.
[0020] The frame, consisting of vertical fence posts and horizontal fence rails, creates a stable base for the installation of the photovoltaic modules. This gives the solar fence high structural stability and resistance to wind and other weather influences.
[0021] Compared to known solar fences, the solar fence according to the invention is characterized by a uniform appearance, flexibility in installation, increased assembly tolerances, optimal use of space, easy retrofitting and expansion options as well as a robust and stable construction.
[0022] The solar fence combines energy generation with various demarcation functions and, thanks to its modular design, offers high flexibility in installation and adaptation to the surrounding environment. Simple and quick installation reduces both material and labor costs, while the possibility of subsequent adjustment and expansion increases the longevity and versatility of the system.
[0023] Preferably, the photovoltaic modules are attached to the fence rails by adjustable module retaining strips, whereby the module retaining strips can be fastened to the fence rails in variable positions using retaining strip clamping units. One of the retaining strip clamping units is located at each intersection point of one of the fence rails and one of the module retaining strips. The module retaining strips for holding the photovoltaic modules are usually designed as profile rails to which the photovoltaic modules can be attached in a generally known manner – force-fitting, form-fitting, and / or material-fitting – for example, using clamp connections, screw connections, rivet connections, or adhesive connections. The module retaining strips for holding the photovoltaic modules are attached to the first side of the fence using the retaining strip clamping units. The design of the retaining bar clamping units allows for precise, flexible, and continuous adjustment of the module retaining bars along the fence rails, accommodating different module sizes and installation tolerances and ensuring stable attachment of the photovoltaic modules. This allows the fence posts to be erected with a deviation of several centimeters. Installation errors during the erection of the fence posts or the installation of other photovoltaic modules can be compensated for by adjusting the positioning of the module retaining bars on the fence rails, even after installation. Photovoltaic modules can be installed even with sloped fence posts.
[0024] It can further be provided that each of the retaining strip clamping units comprises at least one clamping angle and at least one clamping plate, wherein the clamping plate engages positively in the profile of a fence bar designed in C-profile shape and can be fixed by a screw connection to the clamping angle connected to one of the module retaining strips.
[0025] In addition, the solar fence can comprise one or more retaining shoes for holding a portion of the module retaining strips, with each of the retaining strip clamping units being assigned one of the retaining shoes. The respective retaining shoe can be fixed to the clamping bracket of the respective retaining strip clamping unit by means of a screw connection such that the module retaining strips held by the retaining shoes are arranged on the side of the fence bars opposite the clamping brackets.
[0026] It can be provided that a surface consisting of photovoltaic modules is also formed on the second side of the fence, with the photovoltaic modules in turn being held in place by the module retaining strips. The module retaining strips on the second side of the fence are usually attached to the fence rail with retaining shoes, with one of the retaining shoes connected to the respective module retaining strip being attached to each of the retaining strip clamping units. This version of the solar fence with photovoltaic modules mounted on both sides is also referred to as a double-sided or two-sided version.
[0027] According to one design of the solar fence, the angle of the photovoltaic modules can be varied by adjusting the inclination of the module retaining strips. This adaptability facilitates the optimization of solar energy yield depending on the geographical and climatic location. For this purpose, the retaining strip clamping unit and, if applicable, the clamping shoes can be designed so that the module retaining strips are aligned slightly diagonally (to the vertical), for example, by making the distance between the fence bar and the module retaining strip smaller at the upper fence bar and larger at the lower fence bar. This results in the photovoltaic modules being arranged on the frame in a pent-roof configuration with a single-sided design and a gable-roof configuration with a double-sided design. The inclination of the module retaining strips can also be achieved using fence posts that taper towards the top.The angle of the module support bars relative to the vertical, which corresponds to the angle of the photovoltaic modules mounted on them, is preferably up to 10°. The angle of the photovoltaic modules can be individually adjusted to ensure optimal energy yield.
[0028] The cables for connecting the photovoltaic modules can be routed inside the frame, i.e., in or along the fence rails. The construction of cable trenches is not necessary.
[0029] The photovoltaic modules, which are traditionally rectangular in shape, can be mounted in any orientation, for example, portrait, landscape, or even at an angle (at a specified angle). This means that the module support bars can be aligned vertically, horizontally, or at an angle, allowing the photovoltaic modules to be mounted vertically, horizontally, or at an angle. This variability in module orientation offers additional flexibility in using the solar fence both as a privacy screen and as a solar energy system, adapted to the respective aesthetic and functional requirements.
[0030] The fence rails can be extended using rail connectors that are inserted onto or into the rails. The rail connectors are designed as plug-in elements that geometrically match the construction profile of the fence rail. The rail connectors enable simple and flexible extension of the solar fence.
[0031] The solar fence can also feature corner posts to which the bar connectors are attached at the specified height. Here, the bar connectors serve as plug-in holders for the fence bars.
[0032] The fence posts preferably have a post base, which can be used to anchor the respective fence post to the ground.
[0033] The fence posts can be driven into the ground, set in concrete, or anchored to the ground. Adjustments to the height and spacing of the fence posts are easily possible.
[0034] The fence bars can also be connected by means of - preferably crossed - bar struts to increase the stability of the solar fence.
[0035] The mounting height of the photovoltaic modules is freely selectable; horizontal and vertical photovoltaic modules can be combined. The overall height of the solar fence is also variably adjustable.
[0036] The frame of the solar fence, i.e. the combination of fence posts and fence bars, can also be used to attach conventional fence elements, such as chain link, grids, sheets, wooden slats, etc.
[0037] Gates and passageways can be installed into the solar fence - even retrospectively.
[0038] It may also be possible to secure the solar fence frame using brackets. For this purpose, the solar fence can be guyed, for example, with wires or ropes. This means that, according to this solar fence design, the solar fence frame is additionally stabilized by guy wires attached to the fence posts or rails. These guy wires consist of wires, ropes, or tensioning devices to increase the structural stability of the fence and improve its resistance to wind loads and other external forces. These guy wires provide additional stabilization of the solar fence, especially on uneven terrain or in wind-prone areas, and contribute to the longevity and reliability of the structure.
[0039] The solar fence is designed as a modular system, as proposed. It can be fitted with photovoltaic modules on one side, inside or outside. As already explained, photovoltaic modules can also be installed on both sides.
[0040] The solar fence can, in particular, be designed as a modular system comprising additional elements that can be integrated into the solar fence. The additional elements can be inserted within the solar fence frame formed by the fence posts and the fence rails and / or attached to the solar fence frame on one or both sides of the fence. The additional elements to be installed on one or both sides of the solar fence can be attached instead of some of the photovoltaic modules, i.e., they can be exchanged for the photovoltaic modules. The additional elements can include, among other things, privacy wall elements, noise protection panels, fire protection elements, security grilles, and / or soundproof wall elements.
[0041] For example, noise protection elements or walls can be installed on one of the two sides of the fence or inside the frame, for example by installing or inserting panel-shaped insulation material or other types of panels inside the frame.
[0042] Insulation panels, concrete, steel, fence elements, mesh, fire-retardant materials, or other materials that serve as barriers or sound / noise barriers can also be incorporated into the solar fence as filling / intermediate layers. In the appropriate configuration, the solar fence can be used as a fire barrier, sound barrier, security barrier, and / or as a secured enclosure. A secured enclosure that provides protection against penetration of the solar fence can be realized, for example, by means of a concrete slab installed on one side of the frame. The concrete slab can be inserted, screwed, or inserted from above.
[0043] Privacy or security walls can be installed in the same or similar way: For example, one side of the fence can be covered with photovoltaic modules, while the other side of the fence has the privacy wall (for example in the form of a trapezoidal sheet).
[0044] The fence structure can be built completely or partially without photovoltaic modules to bridge transitions and shaded areas.
[0045] The configuration with additional elements allows the solar fence to be individually adapted and used not only for energy generation but also for various protection and shielding applications, depending on the specific requirements of the application.
[0046] The solar fence can also be designed as a security fence with a top edge structure. For this purpose, additional photovoltaic modules tilted at an angle, panels tilted at an angle, or a slanted or pointed end can be installed as the top edge structure. Furthermore, the top edge structure can also include safety devices. For example, a climb-over protection device, such as barbed wire or barbed wire strip, can be installed as the top edge structure to prevent or impede climbing over. The top edge structure can also be rounded as a safety device or climb-over protection device.
[0047] The solar fence is also suitable for agri-photovoltaics, among other things: The solar fence can be erected vertically as a field system, so that the solar fence covers large areas with photovoltaic modules as a standing structure.
[0048] The solar fence can be constructed as an agri-photovoltaic system in several rows of fences. The distance between the rows is chosen so that agricultural crops such as grain, root crops (including beets), pulses (including peas), cultivated fruits (including aggregate fruits and berries) and other field crops can be grown between the solar fence rows, while the solar fence also offers protection from wind and weather. The row spacing can be chosen so that even larger harvesters can drive between the solar fence rows. Agricultural crops can also be grown using espaliers. The fence posts are preferably set at intervals of 1 m to 4 m. Due to the largely vertical alignment of the photovoltaic modules, the solar fence is characterized by its low space requirement.
[0049] The solar fence can also be designed to be easily accessible by agricultural machinery or animals by positioning the lower edge of the photovoltaic modules at a specified distance from the ground. Since the lower row of photovoltaic modules is usually installed with a specified ground clearance, it is easily accessible by agricultural machinery, such as mowers, or by animals. The ground clearance is preferably in the range of 1 m ± 0.2 m.
[0050] Furthermore, when using the solar fence as an agricultural photovoltaic system or as part of one, it can be planned to install an overhead electric line above the solar fence. The overhead line can be used to supply electrically powered harvesters with electricity. This allows the electrical energy generated by photovoltaics to be used directly in the field to operate the machinery.
[0051] Furthermore, as part of an agri-photovoltaic system, heating wires can be installed that are fed with the electrical energy generated by the solar fence - directly or indirectly via a battery buffer - for example, to protect field crops (especially grapevines or fruit trees) during critical weather conditions, especially frost, by temporarily heating the area surrounding the field crops.
[0052] An agricultural photovoltaic system based on the solar fence according to the invention can also comprise one or more irrigation lines, for example, for drip irrigation, drip irrigation, or for watering agricultural crops. In particular, such an irrigation line can be integrated into the solar fence.
[0053] According to a further embodiment, the solar fence comprises one or more rain collectors, for example in the form of gutters, installed along the lower edge of the photovoltaic modules. The rain collectors are preferably arranged so that rainwater or dew can drip from the photovoltaic modules into the rain collectors and be collected therein. The gutters can be installed at a slight gradient, for example, 0.2° ± 0.1°, to a central water reservoir or cistern. The solar fence equipped with the rain collectors can be used not only for energy generation but also for drinking water production. The collected water can be used for targeted irrigation.
[0054] The solar fence can also be used to fence off roads or railway lines, if necessary in combination with security or visual and / or noise protection elements.
[0055] The solar fence can be installed manually, even in hard-to-reach places, such as on mountains or slopes, with less personnel effort.
[0056] The invention is explained in more detail below using exemplary embodiments and with reference to the schematic drawings, wherein identical or similar features are provided with the same reference numerals; in this connection Fig. 1: a two-sided version of the solar fence in perspective view, Fig. 2: a two-sided version of the solar fence with partially mounted photovoltaic modules in perspective view, Fig. 3: a two-sided version of the solar fence with inclined photovoltaic modules, Fig. 4: a version of the solar fence with a rear privacy screen on the frame of the solar fence in perspective view, Fig. 5: the frame of the solar fence in perspective view, Fig. 6: a corner post of the solar fence in perspective view, Fig. 7: the module retaining strips with retaining strip clamping unit and retaining shoes in perspective view, Fig. 8: the arrangement of the module retaining strips with retaining strip clamping unit and retaining shoe on the fence bar in perspective view, Fig. 9: the arrangement of the module retaining strips with retaining strip clamping unit and retaining shoe on the fence bar in side view, Fig. 10: a two-sided version of the solar fence with an electrical energy-generating upper edge structure in perspective view, Fig. 11: a one-sided version of the solar fence with anti-climbing protection in perspective view and Fig. 12: a version of the solar fence with rear cladding and with an electrical energy generating upper edge structure in perspective view.
[0057] The Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 each show a perspective view of a two-sided version of the modular solar fence, illustrating different phases of assembly. The frame of the solar fence is formed by the vertically aligned fence posts 2 and the horizontal fence rails 3, to which the photovoltaic modules 1 are attached. These photovoltaic modules 1 form a closed surface on both sides of the solar fence, concealing the fence posts 2 and creating a continuous, uniform appearance.
[0058] Fig. Figure 1 shows the fully assembled solar fence, with all photovoltaic modules 1 mounted on both sides of the fence. This clearly demonstrates how the solar fence can function as a two-sided energy source while also providing privacy. The design also illustrates how the photovoltaic modules 1 conceal the fence posts 2, creating a visually appealing, continuous viewing area.
[0059] Fig. Figure 2 shows the same fence design, but in a partially assembled state. Here, some photovoltaic modules 1 are already attached to the fence rails 3, while others are still missing, emphasizing the flexible and modular nature of the construction. Fig. 2. illustrates how the solar fence can be gradually expanded and adapted to different requirements. The open structure also highlights the possibility of integrating additional elements, such as security or noise barriers.
[0060] The vertically aligned fence posts 2, shown in the figures as corner posts 2.2 and center posts 2.1, form the supporting structure, i.e., the frame, of the solar fence. They are positioned at regular intervals along the solar fence and anchor the horizontal fence bars 3. The fence bars 3 are designed as C-profiles to enable stable and flexible installation of the module retaining strips 4.
[0061] The module holding strips 4 are attached to the fence bars 3 and serve to hold the photovoltaic modules 1. The module holding strips 4 are fixed using the holding strip clamping units 5, which enable flexible and precise positioning of the photovoltaic modules 1 along the fence bars 3.
[0062] Attached to the lower ends of the fence posts 2, the post feet 7 ensure stable anchoring in the ground, which stabilizes the entire structure against external influences such as wind.
[0063] The transom connectors 9 and the transom struts 8, which are in Fig. 2, additionally connect and stabilize the fence bars 3. The bar connectors 9 serve to extend the fence bars 3, while the crossed bar struts 8 provide additional structural strength.
[0064] At the Fig. In the two-sided version of the solar fence shown in Figure 3, the photovoltaic modules 1 are mounted at an angle. This angled arrangement of the photovoltaic modules 1 is achieved by the module retaining strips 4 attached at an angle to the fence bars 3. This configuration illustrates how the solar fence can be optimized for different geographical locations or seasonal solar radiation angles by adjusting the angle of the photovoltaic modules 1.
[0065] Fig. Figure 4 shows the solar fence design with a privacy screen 10 attached to one side of the frame. This configuration illustrates the versatility of the solar fence by providing a functional extension for additional privacy. The privacy screen 10 is attached to the module support rails 4, so that—as in the case of the photovoltaic modules 1—the positioning and height of the privacy screen 10 can be varied as needed.
[0066] Fig. 5 shows the frame of the solar fence with the vertically aligned fence posts 2 and the horizontal fence bars 3 without the photovoltaic modules 1 or other additional elements.
[0067] The fence post 2, in the example according to Fig. 5, a center post 2.1, is connected to the fence rails 3, each designed as a C-profile. Between the fence rails 3 is the crossed rail bracing 8, which provides additional stability to the structure and increases the structural integrity of the solar fence, particularly under wind loads or on uneven terrain. At the ends of the fence rails 3, the rail connectors 9 can be seen, which allow the fence rails 3 to be extended, thus making the length of the solar fence flexibly adjustable. The frame serves as a stable base that can be equipped with the photovoltaic modules 1 and other additional elements to configure the solar fence for specific applications.
[0068] Fig. Figure 6 shows a corner post 2.2 of the solar fence, which serves as a connecting element between the (not shown) horizontal fence rails 3 extending from both sides of the fence post 2 and connecting the adjacent fence sections. For this purpose, the fence rails 3 are anchored to the corner post 2.2 using the rail connectors 9. The rail connectors 9 ensure that the fence rails 3 are firmly connected to each other and support the corner structure of the fence.
[0069] The Fig. 7, Fig. 8 and Fig. 9 illustrate the fastening of the module retaining strips 4 to the fence bar 3. The fence bar 3 - see Fig. 8 and Fig. 9 - is a C-profile. The clamping bracket 5.1 is attached to one of the module retaining strips 4 (left). The clamping plates 5.2 are inserted into the C-profile of the fence rail 3. These clamping plates are tightened against the clamping bracket 5.1 by means of a screw connection (not shown), thus clamping the left module retaining strip 4 to the fence rail 3. The clamping bracket 5.1, the clamping plates 5.2, and the elements required for the screw connection form the retaining strip clamping unit 5. The other, right-hand module retaining strip 4 is screwed to the clamping bracket 5.1 by means of the retaining shoe 6 and is thus fixed in the same position on the fence rail 3 as the left module retaining strip 4 connected to the clamping bracket 5.1.
[0070] The Fig. 10 and Fig. 11 show versions of the solar fence with the top edge structure 11: In Fig. 10, the diagonally aligned additional photovoltaic modules 1.1 form the upper edge structure 11 of the solar fence. Fig. The rounded design of the upper edge structure 11 shown in Figure 11 makes it difficult to climb over. Alternatively, the Fig. The upper edge structure 11 shown in Figure 11 can also be made of barbed wire.
[0071] The designs of the solar fence according to Fig. 12 is similar to the Fig. 10 and includes the cladding 12 on one side of the fence instead of the photovoltaic modules 1.
