Description

[0001] The invention relates to a method and a device for processing carbon black or (industrial) soot from a pyrolysis reactor.

[0002] Every year, large quantities of scrap tires and plastics are generated worldwide that should be recycled. The resulting products can be steel, carbon black, carbon black, and / or pyrolysis oil. Over 90% of carbon black can be used as a filler in the rubber industry, primarily for vehicle tires and technical rubber products such as conveyor belts, hoses, and sealing profiles. Furthermore, carbon black can be used as a black pigment in applications such as mascara, burial soil, decorative paper, and fibers.

[0003] The aforementioned products, especially carbon black, can be obtained by pyrolysis in a pyrolysis reactor. Pyrolysis takes place at a temperature of approximately 250–700 °C. The carbon black, i.e., soot, from the pyrolysis reactor therefore typically has a relatively high temperature and a relatively high reactivity with oxygen. Furthermore, the carbon black from the pyrolysis reactor is typically not yet of a sufficiently high quality for further industrial application.

[0004] KR 2016 0050130 A discloses a process for purifying pyrolysis soot from old tires, by which impurities such as volatile residues, inorganic substances, and ash can be removed. The resulting soot is dispersed and suspended in water, and the soot slurry is wet-ground using a ball mill, attritor, or the like.

[0005] DE 10 2016 015591 A1 discloses a process for the treatment of carbon black, in which the resulting filter dust is then typically subjected to aeration, particularly dry aeration or wet aeration. Dry aeration is preferable. Wet aeration has the disadvantage of requiring the use of water, which must be laboriously removed in a subsequent process step.

[0006] US 2017 / 0240813 A1 describes a method and apparatus for producing soot particles. The method comprises the following steps: a) providing first soot base particles, b) providing second soot base particles, c) grinding the second soot base particles, d) mixing the second soot base particles into a particle stream of the first soot base particles, and d) pelletizing the first and second soot base particles to form hybrid soot particles. Water and / or additives can be added in step d).

[0007] This document addresses the technical problem of enabling particularly safe and high-quality processing of soot-containing material from a pyrolysis reactor. This problem is solved by each of the independent claims. Preferred embodiments are described in the dependent claims.

[0008] According to one aspect, a processing device for a soot-containing material from a pyrolysis reactor is described. The pyrolysis reactor can, for example, be designed to process vehicle tires. In general, a starting product, e.g., scrap tires or plastics, can be processed in the pyrolysis reactor. The starting product can be decomposed under the action of thermal energy in the absence of oxygen to produce the soot-containing material. The soot-containing material typically has a relatively high temperature at the outlet of the pyrolysis reactor, e.g., 300°C or higher. Furthermore, in addition to industrial carbon black, the soot-containing material typically contains one or more other foreign components (e.g., metal) and / or other impurities.

[0009] The device comprises a water container for directly receiving the soot-containing material from the pyrolysis reactor into a water bath, thus creating a wet, soot-containing material. In other words, the soot-containing material can be transferred directly from the pyrolysis reactor into a water bath or into a water chamber. The device is preferably designed such that the soot-containing material is conveyed from the pyrolysis reactor into the water bath without coming into contact with oxygen. This enables safe removal of the (hot) soot-containing material from the pyrolysis reactor. In particular, exothermic reactions of the soot-containing material can be reliably controlled. In particular, the soot-containing material can be cooled in the water bath, and oxidation reactions can be ensured to proceed in a controlled manner.

[0010] The device can, for example, comprise a shaft, in particular a drop shaft, extending between the pyrolysis reactor and the water tank, which is designed to conduct soot-containing material from the pyrolysis reactor directly into the water bath in the water tank. The shaft is preferably airtight. Furthermore, the shaft can be at least partially or completely filled with water. This makes it particularly reliable to prevent the soot-containing material from the pyrolysis reactor from coming into contact with oxygen.

[0011] Furthermore, the device comprises at least one wet grinding stage configured to reduce the average particle size of soot particles in the wet, soot-containing material, wherein the device comprises a wet grinding stage within the water tank. In other words, the device is configured to grind the soot-containing material in the wet state, in particular to reduce the average particle size of the soot particles. Grinding in the wet state enables safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly processing of the soot-containing material (particularly since dust emissions can be avoided).

[0012] A (first) wet grinding stage of the device is arranged directly inside the water tank in order to provide a particularly efficient device.

[0013] Alternatively or additionally, the device can have a plurality of successively arranged wet grinding stages. The degree of fineness of the successively arranged wet grinding stages (i.e., the degree of fineness of the soot particles produced in the respective wet grinding stage) can increase with each wet grinding stage. By providing multiple wet grinding stages, a particularly fine and / or high-quality industrial soot or carbon black can be produced.

[0014] Furthermore, the device comprises at least one dewatering module for dewatering the wet, soot-containing material or a material derived therefrom following the at least one wet grinding stage. The dewatered (possibly still wet) soot-containing material can then be efficiently reused in one or more applications.

[0015] The water recovered in the dewatering module can be returned to the water tank, further increasing the efficiency of the treatment system.

[0016] The device can comprise a separation module which is configured to separate one or more foreign components, in particular metal, from the wet, soot-containing material following the at least one wet grinding stage, so as to provide a purified, wet, soot-containing material. For this purpose, the separation module can have a sieve and / or a hydrocyclone and / or a means for another separation process. By separating the one or more foreign components, the quality of the processed industrial carbon black can be increased. Separation following the one or more wet grinding stages is advantageous because the grinding effect in the one or more wet grinding stages can be increased by the one or more foreign components.

[0017] The device may comprise at least one treatment module configured to chemically treat and / or purify the wet, soot-containing material or a material derived therefrom, in particular the purified, wet, soot-containing material, to provide a chemically treated, wet, soot-containing material. The chemical purification and / or treatment may be carried out using at least one chemical substance, e.g., an acid, an alkali, a solvent, etc. The device may further comprise at least one neutralization module configured to at least partially or completely neutralize the one or more chemical substances used in the at least one treatment module.

[0018] The quality of the processed carbon black can be further improved by using (optional) chemical cleaning and / or treatment.

[0019] The treatment device may optionally include a bypass line designed to direct the soot-containing material (from the separation module) past the chemical cleaning and / or treatment (possibly directly to the dewatering module). This efficiently eliminates the need for chemical cleaning and / or treatment if necessary.

[0020] The device may comprise a pelletizing module configured to press the (optionally chemically purified and / or treated) carbon black-containing material into pellets following the at least one dewatering module. Furthermore, the device may comprise a drying module configured to dry the pellets. The carbon black pellets can then be efficiently supplied to another application.

[0021] According to a further aspect, a method for processing a soot-containing material from a pyrolysis reactor is described. The method comprises feeding the soot-containing material from the pyrolysis reactor (directly) to a water bath in a water tank, thereby producing a wet, soot-containing material. In particular, the soot-containing material can be transferred directly from the pyrolysis reactor to the water bath (without coming into contact with oxygen) to produce wet, soot-containing material.

[0022] The process further comprises reducing the average particle size of soot particles in the wet, soot-containing material using at least one wet grinding stage. A wet grinding stage is arranged directly in the water bath to which the soot-containing material is fed. Following the grinding of the wet, soot-containing material, the process further comprises dewatering the wet, soot-containing material or a material derived therefrom. The water recovered during the dewatering process can be returned to the water bath. This allows for particularly efficient processing of the soot-containing material.

[0023] It should be noted that the methods, devices, and systems described in this document can be used both alone and in combination with other methods, devices, and systems described in this document. Furthermore, any aspects of the methods, devices, and systems described in this document can be combined in a variety of ways. In particular, the features of the claims can be combined in a variety of ways.

[0024] The invention will be described in more detail below using exemplary embodiments. Fig. 1 an exemplary processing device for soot-containing material from a pyrolysis reactor; and Fig. 2 a flow diagram of an exemplary process for processing soot-containing material from a pyrolysis reactor.

[0025] As stated at the beginning, this document deals with the safe and high-quality processing of carbon black based on carbon black-containing material from a pyrolysis reactor. In this context, Fig. 1 an exemplary processing device 100 for the post-processing of soot-containing material 102 from a pyrolysis reactor 101. The soot-containing material 102 comprises, for example, carbon black (ie, industrial carbon black) and possibly impurities and / or foreign components 107, such as, for example, metal (particularly when car tires were processed in the pyrolysis reactor 101).

[0026] The hot soot-containing material 102 can be transferred directly from the pyrolysis reactor 101 into a water chamber or water bath 103, in particular to cool the soot-containing material 102 and / or to protect the soot-containing material 102 from an exothermic reaction with oxygen. The water chamber 103 is arranged in a water tank with a first wet grinding stage 104 of one or more successive wet grinding stages 104, 105 of the device 100. The one or more wet grinding stages 104, 105 are each configured to grind and / or crush the soot-containing material 102. This process advantageously takes place in the wet state of the soot-containing material 102 to avoid soot dust.

[0027] Following the grinding of the soot-containing material 102, the material 102 can be transferred to a metal separator 106 (generally a separation module) to effect metal removal 107 from the material 102. A soot-containing material purified (of metal) can then be provided. The purified material can then be fed directly (via a bypass 110) to a dewatering module 111, which is configured to extract water from the purified, ground material. The recovered water can then be fed to the water lock 103 via a return line 112 to provide a resource-efficient processing device 100.

[0028] Alternatively, the cleaned, ground, carbon black-containing material can be fed to a treatment or purification module 108 for chemical treatment. The chemical treatment can be designed to dissolve impurities in the cleaned, ground material in order to increase the quality of the carbon black. For this purpose, the treatment module 108 can comprise one or more stirred tanks. Furthermore, following the chemical treatment, a neutralization module 109 can be used to neutralize any acids, alkalis, and / or solvents used during the chemical treatment. The treated material can then be fed to the dewatering module 111.

[0029] At the outlet of the dewatering module 111, dewatered carbon black is provided, which can be processed into carbon black pellets in a pelletizer or pelletizing module 113. The carbon black pellets can then be dried in a dryer 114 to provide dried carbon black pellets 115.

[0030] Thus, a processing device 100 is described that enables efficient and reliable processing of carbon black or soot to at least achieve a commercially acceptable quality. Due to its fineness and black color, the carbon black mixture 102 from the reactor 101 can lead to dust and environmental problems in the dry state. Processing is therefore carried out in the wet state, which reliably prevents dust and environmental problems. Furthermore, wet processing reliably prevents the hot carbon black mixture 102 from the reactor 101 (e.g., at 500°C or more) from coming into contact with oxygen, which could cause an exothermic reaction and possibly a fire.

[0031] Ash removal from reactor 101 is thus performed using water seal 103, which separates the carbon black discharge 102 from the oxygen inlet. Water seal 103 is filled with water, and a drop shaft, through which the carbon black mixture 102 exits reactor 101, is preferably submerged in water seal 103. Wet ash removal cools the carbon black mixture 102. Furthermore, an exothermic reaction with oxygen and dust formation can be avoided.

[0032] Further processing of the carbon black mixture 102 can be carried out (at least largely) in a wet and dust-free state. The water chamber 103 can be designed with or without an agitator. The water chamber 103 can optionally be used as the first stage of the wet grinding 104 (e.g., by using an agitator). The shearing effect of the metal particles contained in the carbon black mixture 102 can be utilized to improve the grinding performance.

[0033] The processing device 100 can have a multi-stage wet grinding process 104, 105 to reduce the particle size of the carbon black particles in the carbon black mixture 102. The wet grinding effect can be enhanced by any metal particles contained in the carbon black mixture 102. Furthermore, wet grinding 104, 105 is advantageous over dry grinding due to reduced environmental problems (e.g., dust, dust explosion, etc.).

[0034] The metal components 107 can be separated from the carbon black / metal mixture 102 using a separation device 106, e.g., a hydrocyclone or a sieve. The separated metal 107 is largely clean and can be removed from the separation device 106, and in a clean state, it can be recycled.

[0035] Carbon black grinding can be used to adjust the carbon black particle size to a specific size. The smaller the particle size, the more efficient the carbon black recycling typically becomes.

[0036] After wet grinding and metal separation, an (optional) chemical treatment 108 can be used to dissolve interfering and contaminating ingredients. This can further improve the purity of the carbon black. The chemical treatment 108 can be carried out in one or more stirred tanks. One or more different acids, alkalis, and / or solvents can be used. Furthermore, the carbon black suspension can pass through a neutralization stage 109. If necessary, a bypass 110 of the chemical treatment stage 108 can be provided to avoid chemical treatment of the carbon black.

[0037] The carbon black suspension can be dewatered using one or more dewatering devices 111. In a downstream pelletizer 113, the (possibly still moist) material can be pressed into pellets and dried in a pellet dryer 114. The carbon black pellets 115 can then be marketed. For this purpose, the pellets 115 can be packaged. Alternatively, the pre-dewatered, still moist, material can be marketed to avoid potentially dusty process steps (in the pelletizer 113 and / or in the pellet dryer 114).

[0038] Fig. 2 shows a flow diagram of an exemplary method 200 for processing a soot-containing material 102 (also referred to in this document as a carbon black mixture) from a pyrolysis reactor 101. The method 200 can be carried out by the processing device 100 described in this document.

[0039] The method 200 comprises feeding 201 the soot-containing material 102 from the pyrolysis reactor 101 to a water bath 103 in a water tank, so that a wet, soot-containing material is produced. For this purpose, the soot-containing material 102 (which was obtained in the pyrolysis reactor 101, e.g., from scrap tires) can be transferred directly from the pyrolysis reactor 101 into the water tank, in particular in such a way that the (hot) soot-containing material 102 does not come into contact with oxygen.

[0040] The method 200 further comprises reducing 202 the average particle size of soot particles in the wet, soot-containing material using at least one wet grinding stage 104, 105, wherein the wet grinding stage 104 is arranged directly in the water bath. The wet grinding stages 104, 105 can have an increasingly high degree of fineness in order to provide increasingly fine soot particles. In a preferred example, the grinding takes place before one or more foreign components 107, in particular metal, are separated from the wet, soot-containing material 102. In this way, the effectiveness of the individual wet grinding stages 104, 105 can be increased.

[0041] Further, following the reduction 202 of the average particle size, the method 200 includes dewatering 203 the wet, soot-containing material or a material derived therefrom. Furthermore, the dewatered material can be pressed into pellets 115.

[0042] The measures described in this document enable safe, environmentally friendly and efficient processing of soot-containing material 102 from a pyrolysis reactor 101.
