Abstract
Description
COSMETIC COMPOSITION APPLICABLE TO THE SKIN BASED ON A VOLATILE MIXTURE OF ALKANES
[0001] This application concerns the technical field of cosmetics.
[0002] More specifically, the invention relates to cosmetic compositions to be applied to the skin and more particularly to compositions such as a makeup primer or base, a blush, an eyeshadow, a foundation or a makeup remover formulation.
[0003] Even more specifically, the invention relates to a composition applicable to the skin comprising a mixture of volatile alkanes.
[0004] As part of this request, a number of definitions must be given.
[0005] For the purposes of the present invention, foundation means a formulation intended to unify the epidermis and to lightly color it. It must be applied in a uniform layer but also allow blending, on the face and part of the neck.
[0006] Similarly, a base, primer, or makeup base is a cosmetic composition that helps to blur skin imperfections and prevents makeup from settling into wrinkles and pores throughout the day. This formulation helps perfect the skin before applying foundation, blush, etc.
[0007] For the purposes of the present invention, a blush or commonly called a “blush” is a cosmetic formulation intended to mimic or reinforce a “pink cheek” appearance.
[0008] Similarly, eyeshadow or commonly called "eye-shadow" refers to cosmetic formulations that can be applied to the eyelid to highlight the eyes by creating color contrasts.
[0009] By makeup remover formulation we mean a makeup remover oil but also a biphasic makeup remover formulation which allows the face to be cleaned of makeup while respecting the skin of its user.
[0010] As stated above, these makeup remover formulations can come in the form of a makeup remover oil made up of oils and various fatty substances.
[0011] They can also be presented in the form of a biphasic formulation comprising an aqueous phase and an oily phase.
[0012] An "alkane" is a saturated hydrocarbon consisting solely of carbon and hydrogen atoms linked together by simple covalent bonds, the general formula of which is CnH2n+2.
[0013] A "linear alkane" is an alkane in which each carbon atom is linked to a maximum of two carbon atoms.
[0014] A "branched alkane" is an alkane in which some carbon atoms are linked to three or even four carbon atoms.
[0015] A Cx alkane is an alkane consisting of x carbon atoms, and the alkane can be linear or branched. For example, dodecane is a C12 alkane.
[0016] Commonly, a "volatile mixture of alkanes" is a mixture of alkanes having a flash point less than or equal to 95°C measured according to the ATSM D93 standard.
[0017] For the purposes of the present invention, the term “volatile mixture of alkanes” means a mixture of alkanes having a flash point less than or equal to 55°C measured according to the ATSM D93 standard.
[0018] The flash point is the flash point measured according to ASTM D93. The unit of the flash point measured according to ASTM D93 is degrees Celsius (°C). It can also be an average of values, each of which is obtained by means of a measurement according to ASTM D93.
[0019] The term "mass percentage" refers to the ratio of the mass of a first compound to the total mass of a mixture of compounds or composition, reduced to a percentage. For example, if 10 grams of a compound y are present in a mixture z having a total mass of 100 grams, then the mass percentage of y in z is 10%.
[0020] A "bio-sourced" compound or organic composition is one in which the organic carbon present in the compound or composition is 100% of plant origin ( 14 C) by radiocarbon analysis according to one of the following standards ASTM D6866, EN 16640 or EN 16785-1.
[0021] The "naturalness index" of an organic composition is called the percentage of organic carbon of plant origin ( 14 C) determined by radiocarbon analysis according to one of the following standards ASTM D6866 or EN 16640 or EN 16785-1.
[0022] For the purposes of the present invention, the OECD 301F method makes it possible to assess the biodegradability of a substance by means of a manometric respirometry test.
[0023] Since the appearance of isododecane in cosmetics in the 1990s, its use has expanded considerably in all areas of cosmetics, from skin care products to makeup products such as mascara compositions, long-lasting lipstick, and hair products such as serums or anti-frizz dry oils.
[0024] In some of these products, isododecane can represent up to 60% by mass of the composition of these cosmetic formulas.
[0025] Long-lasting makeup now represents around 25% of the global makeup market: isododecane is a key component because it allows for long-lasting, transfer-free and waterproof performance, while maintaining optimal comfort. This market was developed from this essential ingredient, isododecane, derived from petrochemicals
[0026] However, with limited oil resources and the oil market being fluctuating and polluting, meeting the demand for isododecane or being able to provide at least equivalent properties in cosmetic formulations represents a strategic challenge for the cosmetics industry.
[0027] To address such a challenge, a first approach is to develop a process for producing isododecane that does not use petroleum raw materials.
[0028] Recently, GLOBAL BIOENERGIES disclosed in its application W02020188033, the production of isobutene by a biological process using genetically modified organisms such as modified E. Coli bacteria.
[0029] The resulting isobutene gas is then converted into isododecane by a solvent-phase oligomerization reaction followed by a hydrogenation step according to patent application WO2021228824.
[0030] This reaction, known in the chemical industry, has the disadvantage of forming by-products and offering a low yield, which raises questions about the long-term viability of this approach in terms of volume and cost.
[0031] Nevertheless, more than €100 million was raised by GLOBAL BIOENERGIES for the development of such a process between 2008 and the beginning of 2021, the date of release of the first batch of cosmetic-grade isododecane.
[0032] This long-term economic investment in the production of isododecane from natural raw materials is remarkable.
[0033] Indeed, a second strategy consisting of reducing the quantity of isododecane present in current cosmetic products or even substituting it is a challenge of a completely different magnitude for the cosmetics industry.
[0034] Furthermore, finding a biodegradable substitute for isododecane would be a major advance from an environmental point of view, as mentioned in patent application EP3349720, such a compound being able to represent up to a mass percentage of 60% of the cosmetic composition.
[0035] Research has thus been carried out in order to identify compounds likely to offer a satisfactory alternative to isododecane, these compounds having to have similar volatility characteristics and similar behavior in a formulation, particularly in terms of sensory properties such as the ability to spread on the skin, the sensation to the touch, or even the “non-greasy” character of the film obtained.
[0036] Thus, there remains a need, from an economic and ecological point of view, to have a cosmetic excipient capable of substituting isododecane, in particular as an excipient to be included in cosmetic formulations.
[0037] Surprisingly, it was demonstrated by the Applicant that such an excipient could be obtained.
[0038] This excipient is a volatile mixture of alkanes as previously defined.
[0039] Preferably, this volatile mixture of alkanes is obtained from fatty alcohols by a Guerbet alcohol reaction followed by a dehydration and hydrogenation reaction. This synthetic route advantageously makes it possible to obtain a substitute excipient for isododecane, from raw materials of natural origin according to an industrial process that is economically viable in relation to market needs.
[0040] Moreover, such an excipient is biodegradable according to the OECD 301F method unlike isododecane (CAS 13475-82-6).
[0041] Advantageously, the excipient according to the present invention has a biodegradability of at least 50% according to the OECD 301F method.
[0042] It has also been demonstrated according to the invention that the incorporation of this cosmetic excipient into cosmetic formulations, in particular those of cosmetic compositions applicable to the skin such as bases or primers, foundations or powders, had the effect of providing said cosmetic formulation with remarkable cosmetic qualities in addition to excellent stability of these formulations, such as ease of application, water resistance, good hold, and a more intense and luminous color.
[0043] In addition, the incorporation of this cosmetic excipient can make it possible to obtain cosmetic formulations applicable to the skin which can present a naturalness index greater than 90%.
