Description

[0001] Protected optical component and manufacturing process

[0002] Complex micro-optics can be extremely mechanically sensitive, especially when manufactured from a polymer material using 3D printing. For many applications, the connection of such optics to optical fibers is essential. Optics mounted on the fiber tip in this way can fall off, deform, or become scratched even with the slightest touch. In addition, air spaces between the individual optical elements must often be maintained for optical function to create a sufficient difference in refractive index. This means that no liquids may penetrate these spaces / cavities.

[0003] However, this poses a challenge, particularly with micro-optics manufactured using 3D printing from a liquid polymer material through targeted local curing, in that the uncured polymer material, which is located in the cavities and remains liquid, must be removed from these cavities. This creates a complex structure, as described, for example, in EP 3 162 549, with the cavities each having channels for removing the uncured liquid polymer material from the cavities.

[0004] Furthermore, for optimal function, the micro-optics must be shielded from lateral stray light. However, especially with micro-optics manufactured using 3D printing, the channels for removing the uncured polymer material from the cavities prevent complete and efficient encapsulation. Thus, EP 3 162 549 A1 in particular does not have a complete encapsulation, meaning that stray light can continue to enter the optics from the sides and thereby negatively impact the imaging quality of the micro-optics. The object of the present invention is to provide an improved micro-optic system, in particular one manufactured using a simplified method.

[0005] The object is achieved by a micro-optic system according to claim 1 and a method for producing such a micro-optic system according to claim 14.

[0006] The micro-optics according to the invention comprises an optical assembly which is in particular substantially cylindrical. The optical assembly comprises at least one optical element and at least one cavity directly adjacent to one side of the optical element. The optical element is, for example, a lens, a lens system, a filter, or the like. By providing the cavity directly adjacent to the optical element, a sufficient refractive index difference is created. The refractive index difference between the refractive index of the cavity and the refractive index of the optical element is in particular greater than 0.3, preferably greater than 0.4, and particularly preferably greater than 0.5.

[0007] Furthermore, according to the invention, the micro-optics has a sleeve that completely surrounds the optical assembly. The sleeve according to the present invention is a separate component. The sleeve protects the optical assembly of the micro-optics from mechanical influences, thus preventing damage such as breakage, scratching, particularly of the optical surfaces, and / or deformation of the optical assembly. According to the invention, the sleeve and the optical assembly are connected and, in particular, bonded to one another with an opaque adhesive. "Opaque" refers to the property of the adhesive, due to which light in the near infrared range, the visible spectral range, and / or the near UV range can essentially not penetrate the adhesive material.Essentially, in this context, less than 50% of the light passes through the opaque adhesive, preferably less than 75%, more preferably less than 90%, and most preferably less than 95%. The opaque adhesive also forms a diaphragm for the optical assembly. The diaphragm can be the at least one optical element of the optical assembly or an additional optical element. Thus, the opaque adhesive connects the optical assembly to the sleeve, so that the sleeve acts as mechanical protection for the optical assembly from damage. At the same time, the opaque adhesive is used to create a diaphragm. Furthermore, the opaque adhesive ensures that no stray light can penetrate into the optics between the sleeve and the optical assembly, thus achieving effective shielding through the opaque adhesive.

[0008] The optical element preferably has dimensions or dimensions in the lower millimeter to micrometer range, ie, dimensions less than 2 mm, for example, less than 1000 pm and preferably less than 600 pm. Likewise, the optical assembly can have a corresponding dimension (diameter / side length) of less than 2 mm, preferably less than 1000 pm and particularly preferably less than 600 pm.

[0009] Preferably, the optical assembly is a monolithic component which is constructed in one piece.

[0010] The optical assembly is preferably produced by 3D printing, so that the optical elements, support elements around the respective cavity, and other, particularly complex, structures of the optical assembly can be easily produced. The three-dimensional structure of the optical assembly is formed and printed using a 3D printer based on a predetermined or predefined layout or design. The 3D printer can, for example, be a 3D lithography system, in particular a 3D laser lithography system or a 3D multi-photon laser lithography system, which is preferably based on 2-photon polymerization of a UV-curing photoresist or creates three-dimensional complex structures therefrom. For this purpose, the liquid resist is cured at specific locations predetermined by the 3D design. The remaining liquid resist is removed to obtain the 3D structure.

[0011] The optical assembly is preferably transparent. In particular, the optical assembly is made of a transparent polymer. In particular, if the optical assembly is produced using a 3D printing process, a transparent varnish is used. Thus, the optical assembly is also correspondingly transparent. "Transparent" refers to the property of the optical assembly material that allows light in the near-infrared range, the visible spectral range, and / or the near-UV range to essentially pass through the material of the optical assembly. In this context, "essentially" means more than 50% of the light passes through the material, preferably more than 75%, more preferably more than 90%, and particularly preferably more than 95%.This results in the need for lateral shielding against stray light, which is provided by the opaque adhesive surrounding the sleeve and the optics assembly and / or by the sleeve.

[0012] Preferably, a first end face of the optical assembly is directly connected to an optical fiber or a substrate. A second end face, which is opposite the first end face, can be configured as an exit facet or entrance facet of the optical assembly.

[0013] Preferably, the sleeve extends axially beyond the optical assembly and encompasses a portion of the optical fiber. This improves the mechanical stability of the connection between the optical assembly and the optical fiber. Preferably, more than one cavity is provided, with the optical element, in particular, directly adjacent to a cavity on both sides.

[0014] Preferably, a cavity is formed between the optical element of the optical assembly and a fiber end or substrate. This defines the cavity on a first side by the optical element and on an opposite second side by the fiber end or substrate, thereby preventing liquid from penetrating the cavity.

[0015] Preferably, the cavity is formed between the optical element and an end face of the optical assembly. The end face can, for example, be the exit / entrance facet of the optical assembly, which thus defines the cavity and prevents liquid from penetrating it.

[0016] Preferably, an annular gap is formed between the optics assembly and the sleeve, wherein the annular gap is in particular completely filled by the adhesive. The adhesive penetrates the annular gap by capillary action and thereby spreads between the optics assembly and the sleeve to bond them together. Preferably, the annular gap completely surrounds the optics assembly, so that the opaque adhesive also ensures a complete bond between the optics assembly and the sleeve.

[0017] The optics assembly preferably has spacer elements, wherein the spacer elements extend radially outwards and are in direct contact with the sleeve. The annular gap is formed in particular by the spacer elements. At the same time, the spacer elements serve to radially fix the position of the optics assembly within the sleeve, so that in particular a concentric alignment of the optics assembly within the sleeve is achieved before bonding using the opaque adhesive. At least three spacer elements are provided, which are arranged on the optics assembly. Preferably, more spacer elements are provided. In particular, the radial length of the spacer elements, starting from the surface of the optics assembly, corresponds exactly to the width of the annular gap. In particular, the spacer elements have a width dimension of 1-20 pm and preferably 1-10 pm.In particular, the spacer elements represent the only direct connection between the optical assembly and the sleeve, whereas otherwise there is only an indirect connection between the optical assembly and the sleeve through the opaque adhesive.

[0018] Preferably, the width of the annular gap is less than 50 pm, preferably less than 30 pm, more preferably less than 20 pm and particularly preferably less than 10 pm.

[0019] The sleeve is preferably a metal sleeve and / or an opaque sleeve. In particular, the sleeve is made of a different material than the optical assembly. A metal sleeve, in particular, ensures high mechanical stability, which protects the optical assembly from damage. At the same time, an opaque sleeve efficiently prevents stray light from the side. In particular, since the sleeve completely surrounds the optical assembly, this simultaneously provides complete protection for the optical assembly and complete shielding against stray light from the side.

[0020] The sleeve preferably has a thickness of 20 μm to 250 μm, preferably 20 μm to 150 μm, and particularly preferably 20 μm to 100 μm. The thickness of the sleeve refers to the wall thickness.

[0021] The opaque adhesive is preferably a two-component adhesive containing a dye and / or particles, which make the adhesive opaque. The aperture is preferably formed by an annular recess in the optical assembly, which is filled with the opaque adhesive. The annular recess is open on the radial outer surfaces of the optical assembly, allowing adhesive distributed between the sleeve and the optical assembly to flow into the annular recess. This also occurs, in particular, through a capillary effect.

[0022] The annular recess preferably extends radially inward over more than 20%, preferably more than 50%, and particularly preferably more than 80% of the radius of the optical assembly. The remaining part of the transparent optical assembly then forms the aperture, which is surrounded by a ring of opaque adhesive.

[0023] The annular recess preferably has a vent hole or air compensation hole to discharge the air displaced by the adhesive entering the annular recess and thereby ensure complete filling of the annular recess. For this purpose, the vent hole is arranged in particular at the radially inner end of the annular recess. In particular, the vent hole is arranged such that the vent hole connects the annular recess to the at least one cavity, so that the air displaced in the annular recess by the adhesive is guided into the at least one cavity.

[0024] Preferably, the diameter of the vent hole is selected such that air can pass through, but the adhesive cannot due to its viscosity and surface tension. In particular, the vent hole has a diameter of less than 10 μm, more preferably 5 μm, and most preferably 1 μm.

[0025] Preferably, the adhesive does not enter the at least one cavity. Thus, the cavity remains filled with air or a gas to maintain the required refractive index difference between the optical element and its surroundings, in particular the cavity.

[0026] Preferably, the at least one cavity has at least one opening, which extends in particular in the circumferential direction and is open towards the outside of the optical assembly. If the optical assembly has a cylindrical shape, for example, the opening of the at least one cavity is arranged on the lateral surface of the optical assembly. In particular, several openings are provided, which are distributed along the circumferential direction. Through the opening, it is possible to remove uncured resist from the cavity during the manufacturing process. The opening thus creates a connection from the interior of the cavity to the outside in order to remove the uncured photoresist.

[0027] Preferably, pressure in the at least one cavity compensates for the capillary force of the adhesive, preventing the adhesive from penetrating the cavity due to the increased pressure in the cavity. The pressure in the cavity is created by the air displaced by the adhesive when filling the annular gap and / or annular recess to create the aperture. This creates a pressure equilibrium, which just prevents further penetration of the adhesive into the respective cavity.

[0028] Preferably, the at least one opening, several openings or all openings of the at least one cavity have a contact element.

[0029] The contact element preferably has a weakly wetting area to suppress the capillary effect of the adhesive. This weakly wetting area can be created, for example, by surface treatment of the contact element. Due to the weakly wetting properties of the surface of the contact element to reduce the adhesive forces, the capillary effect can be suppressed, thus preventing unwanted filling of the at least one cavity by the opaque adhesive. The reduction in the adhesive forces increases the contact angle of the adhesive, thereby reducing the capillary effect.

[0030] The contact element preferably has an inclined surface to suppress the capillary effect of the adhesive. Due to the inclined surface, the contact angle of the adhesive changes, so that further penetration of the adhesive through the opening into the cavity of the optical assembly is no longer possible. In particular, the inclined surface points radially outwards. In particular, the inclined surface has an angle to the axial direction of the optical assembly that is less than or equal to the contact angle of the adhesive and is preferably between 5° and 35° and in particular 10° to 30°. Thus, the inclined surface of the contact element ensures that the cavities continue to exist and are not filled by the opaque adhesive that bonds the optical assembly to the sleeve. At the same time, it is not necessary to provide separate channels that connect the cavities to the environment for removing the uncured photoresist.Rather, openings can be provided, which are, however, designed so that the opaque adhesive does not pass through the openings into the at least one cavity.

[0031] This significantly simplifies the design of the optical assembly. At the same time, it is possible to completely enclose the optical assembly with a sleeve or an opaque adhesive, thus preventing stray light from penetrating from the sides. In combination with the aperture provided according to the invention, this results in improved optical properties while simultaneously simplifying the design.

[0032] A further aspect of the present invention relates to a method for producing a micro-optic system comprising the steps of: providing an optical assembly, wherein the optical assembly has at least one optical element and at least one cavity immediately adjacent to one side of the optical element;

[0033] Providing and a sleeve;

[0034] Inserting the optics assembly into the sleeve;

[0035] Inserting an opaque adhesive between the sleeve and the optics assembly, whereby the adhesive spreads between the sleeve and the optics assembly by means of the capillary effect and forms an aperture.

[0036] Preferably, the micro-optics are designed as described above.

[0037] Preferably, the adhesive does not penetrate into the at least one cavity.

[0038] The process preferably comprises curing the opaque adhesive, for example, by drying, exposure to heat, and / or exposure, for example, using UV light. Alternatively, it can be a chemically initiated polymerization, such as in the case of a two-component adhesive.

[0039] Preferably, the method comprises additional steps of polishing at least one end surface of the micro-optic after insertion of the opaque adhesive and in particular curing of the opaque adhesive, in order to thereby produce an end facet of the micro-optic.

[0040] Preferably, the step of providing an optical assembly comprises producing the optical assembly by means of 3D printing, in particular by means of 2-photon absorption of a UV-curing polymer / photoresist. The method is preferably further developed based on the features of the micro-optics described above.

[0041] The invention is explained in more detail below using preferred embodiments with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0042] The figures show:

[0048] Figures 6A - 6F show a second embodiment of the present

[0049] invention, and

[0050] Figures 7A, 7B show a further embodiment of the present invention.

[0051] The following refers to the embodiment of Figures 1-4. Figure 1 shows an optical assembly 10 which is attached directly to an end facet of an optical fiber 12 or is produced directly on the end of the optical fiber 12, in particular by means of 3D printing. For this purpose, a liquid photoresist is locally selectively cured in the 3D printing process, for example by a 3D lithography process and in particular by means of a 3D laser lithography process which is based, for example, on 2-photon absorption of a UV-curing photoresist. This achieves a direct connection between the optical assembly 10 and the optical fiber 12. The micro-optics also has a sleeve 14, which is designed, for example, as a metal sleeve and / or an opaque sleeve. The optical assembly 10 is pushed into the sleeve together with the fiber according to Figure 2. The sleeve 14 completely surrounds the optical assembly 10.This provides optimal protection for the optical assembly against mechanical influences. Furthermore, the sleeve 14 also surrounds a portion of the optical fiber 12, so that the axial length of the sleeve 14 in the embodiment of Figures 1-4 is greater than the axial length of the optical assembly 10 in order to create a partial overlap between the sleeve 14 and the optical fiber 12. The overlap of the sleeve provides mechanical protection for the connection between the optical assembly 10 and the optical fiber 12. Furthermore, the opaque sleeve 14 prevents stray light from entering from the side, thereby improving the imaging properties of the optical assembly 10. Particularly when the optical assembly 10 is made of a transparent polymer, the opaque sleeve can prevent a negative impact on the optical performance of the optical assembly 10 caused by stray light entering from the side.

[0052] In particular, the optical assembly 10 is essentially cylindrical. The diameter of the optical assembly 10 essentially corresponds to the diameter of the optical fiber 12.

[0053] Furthermore, the optical assembly is particularly monolithic, i.e., formed in one piece.

[0054] The optics assembly 10 is preferably produced by 3D printing. According to Figure 1, the optics assembly 10 has spacer elements 27 on its outer side, which are distributed along the circumference. When the optics assembly 10 is inserted into the sleeve 14, these spacer elements 27 come into contact with the inner surface of the sleeve 14, thereby centering, aligning, and optionally clamping the optics assembly 10 within the sleeve 14, for example, by means of a frictional connection.

[0055] The optical assembly 10 shown in Figure 3 has at least one optical element 16, which is designed as a lens according to Figure 3. The optical element is directly adjacent to a cavity 18 arranged above the optical element 16 and a cavity 20 arranged below the optical element 16. These cavities 18, 20 are filled with air or another gas in order to achieve a suitable refractive index difference between the medium of the cavity 18, 20 and the optical element 16. This enables suitable guidance of the light within the optical assembly 10. In particular, sufficient focusing can be achieved by the lens 16, for example to compensate for the divergence of the light emerging from the end facet of the optical fiber 12 and to obtain substantially collimated light.Conversely, the light passing through the optical assembly 10 can be efficiently coupled into the optical fiber 12 due to the achieved focusing of the lens 16.

[0056] Furthermore, the optics assembly 10 has an end facet 22 which closes off the lower cavity 20 and thus protects it against the ingress of liquid. The end facet 22 can be polished, for example. Light passes through the optics assembly into the fiber through the end facet 22, or light from the optical fiber 12 can exit through the optics assembly 10 from the end facet 22. As can be seen from Figure 1, the cavities 18, 20 each have outwardly open openings 32, i.e. openings in the lateral surface of the optics assembly 10. During the manufacturing process, the optics assembly 10 is produced from a photoresist. Uncured photoresist must be removed from the cavities 18, 20 through the openings 32. The openings have a size of 0.3-0.9 * U / n, where U denotes the circumference of the lateral surface and n the number of openings. In particular, the openings have an axial height of 10pm to 250pm and preferably 50pm to 100pm.

[0057] An annular gap 26 is formed between the sleeve 14 and the optical fiber 12 or the optical component 10. Depending on the size of the assembly, this annular gap 26 has a thickness of between 3 pm and 100 pm, for example. To connect the optical assembly 10 to the sleeve 14 and the optical fiber 12 to the sleeve 14, an adhesive is introduced into the annular gap 26 and spreads there through the capillary effect.

[0058] The optics assembly 10 has an annular recess 28. The adhesive used to bond the optics assembly 10 to the sleeve 14 also penetrates into the annular recess 28 due to the capillary effect. This adhesive is, in particular, an opaque adhesive. The opaque adhesive creates an aperture, which, in the example in Figure 4, at least partially surrounds the optical element 16. In particular, the annular gap 28 extends over at least 50%, preferably at least 70%, and particularly preferably at least 90% of the radius of the optics assembly 10. This creates an aperture 29 so that light can pass through the aperture 29 and through the optical element 16. The opaque adhesive thus fulfills two functions simultaneously: First, the opaque adhesive creates a connection between the optics assembly 10 and the sleeve 14.At the same time, the opaque adhesive forms a screen. Furthermore, the opaque adhesive completely surrounds the optical assembly 10, so that stray light entering from the side is also additionally shielded by the opaque adhesive.

[0059] However, by providing openings 32 for removing the uncured photoresist during the manufacturing process of the optical assembly 10, the problem arises that the opaque adhesive cannot penetrate through the opening 32 into the cavities 18, 20. For this purpose, a contact element is provided at the edges of the opening 32. In the embodiment of Figures 5A, 5B, the contact element 36 has an inclined surface 38 facing radially outward. The inclined surface 38 of the contact element 36 changes the contact angle between the optical assembly 10 and the opaque adhesive flowing in due to the capillary effect, so that no opaque adhesive can pass through the opening 32 into the cavities 18, 20. This is illustrated in Figure 5B. Due to the contact element 36, the opaque adhesive 34 forms a meniscus and does not pass through the opening 32.In particular, the inclined surface 38 has an angle relative to the axial direction 42 of the optical assembly of between 15° and 45° and in particular between 20° and 35°.

[0060] As shown in Figure 3, the annular recess has at least one, but ideally a plurality of, vent holes 30 or air equalization holes, which connect the annular recess 28 to the cavity 18. Air from the annular recess 28, which is displaced by the inflowing opaque adhesive, can escape through the vent holes 30 into the cavity 18 in order to achieve complete filling of the annular recess 28 with the opaque adhesive. This increases the pressure in the cavity 18, which in turn counteracts the flow of the opaque adhesive through the opening 32 into the cavity 18. Reference is made below to the embodiment of Figures 6A to 6F. Identical or similar features are identified by identical reference numerals.

[0061] In the embodiment of Figures 6A-6F, an optical assembly 10 is arranged on a substrate 42. The structure of the optical assembly 10, as shown in Figures 6A and 6F, essentially corresponds to the features of the embodiment of Figures 1-4. In particular, an optical element 16 is provided, which is directly connected to or adjacent to a cavity 18 on both sides. Furthermore, an annular recess 28 is provided, by means of which an aperture is formed.

[0062] The optical assembly 10 is inserted into a sleeve 14 as shown in Figure 6B. This creates an annular gap 26. As shown in Figures 6C and 6D, a liquid, opaque adhesive 34 is applied to an end face of the micro-optics and cured, with the cured adhesive being designated 34'. The end face of the micro-optics is then polished to create a polished light exit / entrance surface as shown in Figure 6E. As shown in Figure 6F, the opaque adhesive 34' fills the annular recess 28, forming a diaphragm. At the same time, the opaque adhesive 34' bonds the sleeve 14 to the optical assembly 10, so that the sleeve 14 protects the optical assembly 10 from damage.

[0063] In particular, one of the cavities 18 is delimited on one side by the aperture and the optical element 16 and on the other side by the substrate 42, wherein the substrate 42 prevents penetration of liquid into the cavity.

[0064] Further features of the embodiment of Figures 6A-6F correspond or may correspond to the features as described above with respect to the embodiment of Figures 1-5, the claims or the general description.

[0065] Reference is made below to the embodiment of Figures 7A and 7B. The embodiment of Figures 7A and 7B differs in that the annular recess is provided on an end face 50 of the micro-optic unit. In this case, an opaque adhesive can be applied and distributed through an annular gap between the optical assembly 10 and the sleeve 14. At the same time, a diaphragm is created on the end face 50 with an aperture 52 through which light can enter and exit. In particular, the end face 50 can be created by polishing.

[0066] Furthermore, the micro-optics according to Figure 7B has three optical elements 16', 16" and 16, all of which are designed as lenses. The lenses are each separated from each other by a cavity, whereby a sufficient refractive index difference is achieved between the respective optical elements.

[0067] Reference is made below to Figure 8. Figure 8 shows a schematic sequence of a method for producing the micro-optics according to the invention.

[0068] In step SOI, an optical assembly is provided, wherein the optical assembly has at least one optical element and at least one cavity immediately adjacent to one side of the optical element.

[0069] In step S02, a sleeve is provided.

[0070] In step S03, the optics assembly is inserted into the sleeve.

[0071] In step S04, an opaque adhesive is introduced between the sleeve and the optical assembly, wherein the adhesive spreads between the sleeve and the optical assembly by means of the capillary effect and forms an aperture. In particular, the provision of an optical assembly can comprise 3D printing of the optical assembly 10, for example by locally evaluating a photoresist in a lithography system or a laser lithography system. In this case, 2-photon absorption is used in particular to locally harden the photoresist. The unhardened photoresist is subsequently removed. This produces a monolithic optical assembly 10, which consists in particular of a transparent polymer. This is then inserted into the sleeve 14 according to step S03 and connected to the sleeve 14 by means of an opaque adhesive. The adhesive spreads between the sleeve 14 and the optical assembly 10 by means of the capillary effect. At the same time, an aperture is created by the opaque adhesive and in particular by the provision of an annular recess 18 in the optical assembly 10, which is filled with the opaque adhesive.

[0072] The sleeve 14 protects the mechanical stability of the complex structure of the optical assembly 10. The opaque adhesive creates a firm bond between the sleeve 14 and the optical assembly 10. At the same time, the opaque adhesive and the sleeve 14 prevent stray light from entering from the sides. At the same time, the opaque adhesive forms an aperture. By providing an aperture and preventing stray light from entering from the sides, the imaging quality of the micro-optics is improved. The cavities ensure that there is a sufficient difference in refractive index between the optical elements 16, 16', and 16" and the adjacent components to effectively refract light and control the light path within the micro-optics.
