Description

Title of the invention: LEAVE-IN MAKE-UP REMOVER COMPOSITION FIELD

[0001] The present invention relates to a leave-in moisturizing makeup remover composition. CONTEXT

[0002] Removing stubborn makeup has always been a challenge and a pain point for consumers, especially for mascara and waterproof mascara, long-lasting foundation, and long-lasting lip products. Typical makeup remover products are ineffective at removing stubborn makeup, requiring repeated pulling and rubbing of the skin and / or delicate eye areas, which causes irritation. Some oil-based makeup remover products may make makeup removal easier but leave the skin feeling unpleasant and greasy. Less oily alternatives stain and leave makeup residue. Many existing products and compositions also need to be rinsed off after use. Therefore, there is a need for compositions that allow easy and effective makeup removal, in addition to a soft and smooth skin feeling after use and that do not require subsequent washing or rinsing, abstract.

[0003] To address the gaps in the art in makeup remover products, the inventors provide a leave-on (moisturizing) makeup remover composition that provides easy and effective makeup removal and a soft and smooth skin feeling after use. Use of the composition does not require the use of water for rinsing after cleansing, thereby saving water usage and making cleansing possible in conditions where water is scarce or may not be available.

[0036] These and other aspects of the invention are set forth in the appended claims and described in more detail in the detailed description of the invention.

[0037] The present disclosure describes exemplary embodiments in accordance with the general inventive concepts and is not intended to limit the scope of the invention in any manner. Indeed, the invention as described in the specification is broader than and not limited by the exemplary embodiments presented herein, and the terms used herein have their full ordinary meanings.

[0038] It is understood that both the foregoing general description and the following detailed description are exemplary and explanatory only and are not restrictive of the disclosure. DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0039] The inventors herein propose a leave-in makeup remover composition employing a polyglyceryl ester with an HLB of less than 10 as a co-emulsifier which is stable and does not cause irritation to the eye during application.

[0040] The terms "stable" and "stability" with respect to the emulsion architecture of the inventive composition refer to the composition remaining in a creamy emulsion state and not dephasing as evidenced by the formation of significant fluid droplets. In some embodiments, stable or stability may include the absence or minimal formation of droplets that indicate the release of the internal aqueous phase from the emulsion. Stability is evidenced by visual inspection or by direct measurement of viscosity, or by both. In various embodiments, an inventive composition remains stable at temperatures in the range of about 5°C to about 45°C, for a period of at least 8 weeks (-two months), and may remain stable for longer periods, for example, for at least three months, or at least four months, or at least six months, and up to about at least 3 years, or any intermediate value, range, or subrange. Exemplary embodiments of the inventive composition shown in the examples herein have demonstrated stability at each of the temperatures of 5°C, 25°C, 37°C, and 45°C for a period of eight weeks. And these exemplary compositions have demonstrated stability through 10 freeze-thaw cycles at -20°C / 25°C.In this document, the term "pass" refers to stability demonstrated at each of the temperatures of 5°C, 25°C, 37°C and 45°C for a period of eight weeks, and stability demonstrated over 10 freeze-thaw cycles at -20°C / 25°C.

[0041] The composition according to the disclosure includes at least one silicone crosslinked polymer emulsifier; at least one polyglyceryl ester with an HLB of less than about 10; at least one branched or linear liquid alkane with a carbon chain length of C11 to C20; at least one polar emollient ester with a carbon chain length of C12 to C24; water, or water and a humectant or water-based solvent or a combination thereof; and, optionally one or more additives. In some embodiments, the composition has an aqueous phase having a pH that is in a range of about 3-6, and in some embodiments about 5.

[0042] The cosmetic composition of the present disclosure includes an aqueous phase and a silicone oil phase formed as a stable water-in-oil (silicone) emulsion that has a phase ratio of the aqueous phase to the silicone oil phase of about 8.0 to about 1.5, or alternatively about 7.0 to about 3.5, or alternatively about 6.0 to about 5.0, or alternatively about 5.5. The phase ratio is calculated by dividing the total weight of the aqueous phase by the total weight of the silicone oil phase.

[0043] The inventors developed the inventive composition to address certain gaps in the art, in particular the need of consumers for a makeup removal solution that has little reliance on water for cleansing and rinsing, the general desire in the market to provide compositions that are formulated with sustainable, natural and / or green materials, and in particular that use little or no non-renewable ingredients (e.g., mineral oil and petroleum-based ingredients) and ingredients that have a negative impact on the environment (e.g., EDTA which mobilizes heavy metals). Therefore, in certain embodiments embodiment, the composition is free or essentially free of non-renewable ingredients and ingredients that have a negative impact on the environment, and in certain particular embodiments, it excludes or is essentially free of ingredients selected from mineral oil, EDTA and combinations thereof. In certain embodiments, the composition may include only nominal amounts of petroleum-based ingredients or may be free of petroleum-based ingredients. And in certain embodiments, the composition may also be free of ingredients selected from the group consisting of cyclomethicones, phthalates, parabens, sulfates, polyquaternium, microplastics, synthetic dyes, gelling agents and combinations thereof.

[0044] The inventors also sought to address gaps in the art related to the use of co-emulsifiers such as dimethicone and PEG-10 dimethicone, which the inventors have shown provide an emulsion that can break down rapidly upon application, whereby the internal phase (water) can leak into the eyes during application, causing eye irritation to the user, in part due to the relatively low pH of the aqueous phase. The inventors have surprisingly discovered that the use as a co-emulsifier of a polyglyceryl ester having an HLB of about or less than about 10 stabilizes the gel-cream emulsion against breakdown upon application, thereby essentially eliminating the release of the aqueous phase and the concomitant eye irritation. The inventors demonstrated that in the absence of the polyglyceryl ester co-emulsifier, the internal phase (water) can be absorbed / leak into the eyes during application, causing eye irritation to the user. In addition, the inventors demonstrated that the inventive composition forms a robust emulsion that demonstrates freeze / thaw stability and long-term storage stability (at least 8 weeks in an accelerated stability study) while maintaining stability upon application. Comparative compositions fail both material stability tests, including freeze / thaw and storage stability, as well as application stability.

[0045] Further, the inventors have demonstrated through expert evaluations of makeup removal efficacy that the exemplified embodiments of the composition according to the disclosure provide a pleasant soft and smooth skin feel to the consumer and demonstrate improved performance in removing mascara, particularly waterproof mascara, compared to conventional and / or currently marketed makeup removers, and to comparative compositions that lack a polyglyceryl co-emulsifier having an HLB of about or less than about 10. And the inventors have demonstrated, in bench tests on forearm skin, that the removal of lipstick and long-lasting foundation exhibited performances at least comparable or superior to those of conventional and / or currently marketed makeup removers, and comparative compositions devoid of a polyglyceryl co-emulsifier having an HLB of about or less than about 10.

[0046] The composition according to the disclosure is a water-in-oil emulsion (as exemplified herein, a silicone oil) that has a cream-gel texture that demonstrates medium to long lasting durability, providing a pleasant feel when applied and is not immediately absorbed by the skin or evaporated. A water-in-oil emulsion is sometimes referred to as an inverse emulsion. The composition is formulated as a "green" or more "sustainable" composition in comparison to currently marketed makeup removers, which typically contain mineral oil and / or fossil-derived ingredients and leave the skin with an unpleasant oily and greasy feeling after use.

[0047] Use of the composition includes applying the composition to one or both fingers of a user and to a swabbing article and contacting the composition with makeup on the skin and rubbing in a circular motion to solvate and / or emulsify the makeup, followed by wiping the contacted skin to remove the makeup, the method not requiring cleansing or rinsing with water. In some embodiments, the composition is applied with a user's fingers. In some embodiments, the composition is applied using a swabbing article. Some non-limiting examples of swabbing articles include a tissue, a fibrous or cloth pad, such as a cotton makeup pad, and a sponge.

[0048] When massaged onto the face, the composition demonstrates effective dissolution of eye, face and lip makeup. For example, after application with the fingers, the composition can be removed using a tissue or cotton round that allows the user to gently wipe off dissolved makeup products. The composition does not require rinsing after application and leaves the skin with a silky, moisturized feel that is neither greasy nor sticky.

[0110] In the study, the test compositions were used by a trained / expert beautician to remove mascara (Maybelline (TM) Colossal Big Shot Waterproof Mascara).

[0111] The makeup removal efficacy was determined by following a protocol in which the beautician applied the stubborn makeup products on six (6) Caucasian women. After 30 minutes, the beautician removed the makeup with the test products (inventive and comparative), using 3 cotton pads each soaked with 2 mL of the test composition to remove the mascara. The degree of makeup removal was assessed by the amount of residual makeup that was removed using Lancôme (TM) Bi-Facil (TM) Makeup Remover (a biphasic makeup removal product), 2 mL on one cotton pad for a maximum of 6 cotton pads. The higher the makeup removal efficacy of the test formula, the fewer cotton pads with Bi-Facil (TM) will be required, as there will be less residual makeup. The makeup removal efficacy data are shown in Table 6.

[0113] Effectiveness of waterproof mascara removal (scale from 0 to 6: 6 corresponding to complete removal, and 0 to no removal) Test composition Waterproof mascara Inventive example 1 3.1 Comparative example 3 0.5 Lancôme Galatéis Douceur (Comparative example 4 0.7 Neutrogena cleansing wipes (Comparative example 5) 0.2 Garnier micellar water, monophasic (Comparative example 6) 0.5 Garnier micellar water, biphasic (Comparative example 7) 2.3

[0114] As shown, the inventive composition outperformed all comparative compositions in the test. Comparative Example 1, which has essentially the same base composition as inventive composition 1 but does not contain a co-emulsifier, successfully passed the long-term stability test in multiple temperature chambers for 8 weeks, however, it exhibits borderline stability to freeze / thaw cycling and showed water droplets on the surface of the formulation mass. As such, and as revealed in the study, when applying Comparative Example 1 to remove mascara, the user experiences a stinging sensation in the eyes due to the leakage of the aqueous phase. Comparative Example 2, which has essentially the same base composition as the inventive composition but uses a polyglyceryl ester emulsifier with an HLB value of 15 as a co-emulsifier.Although the emulsion may initially form, the formula separated during freeze / thaw cycles and its viscosity decreased over time. Application of Comparative Example 2 also causes irritation in the eye area; therefore, it is difficult to assess its makeup removal effectiveness. Comparative Example 3 uses dimethicone as an emollient. Although the formula is stable, feels good on the skin, and does not irritate the eyes, it is not effective for removing eye makeup.

[0116] "At least one" as used herein means one or more than one, including two or more than two, and therefore includes individual components as well as mixtures / combinations.

[0117] The transitional terms "comprising", "consisting essentially of" and "consisting of", when used in the appended claims, in their original and amended form, define the scope of the claim with respect to additional unmentioned elements or steps, if any, which are excluded from the scope of the claim(s). The term "comprising" is intended to be inclusive or broad and does not exclude any additional, unmentioned element, process, step or material. The term "consisting of" excludes any element, step or material other than those specified in the claim and, in the latter case, impurities ordinarily associated with the specified material(s). The term "consisting essentially of" limits the scope of a claim to the specified elements, steps or materials and to those which do not materially affect the fundamental and novel feature(s) of the claimed disclosure. All materials and methods described herein that embody the present disclosure may, in other embodiments, be more specifically defined by any of the transitional terms "comprising", "consisting essentially of", and "consisting of".

[0118] The terms "free" and "devoid" indicate that no reliably measurable excluded material is present in the composition, typically 0% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition. The term "substantially free" means that, although it is preferable that no excluded material be present in the composition, it is possible to have very small amounts of the excluded material in the composition of the invention, provided that such amounts do not materially affect the advantageous properties of the composition. In particular, "substantially free" means that the excluded material may be present in the composition in an amount of less than about 0.1% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.

[0119] The term "about" means to within 10% of the number stated (e.g., "about 10%" means 9% - 11% and "about 2%" means 1.8% - 2.2%).

[0120] All percentages and ratios are calculated by weight unless otherwise indicated. All percentages are calculated based on the total composition unless otherwise indicated. In general, unless expressly stated otherwise herein, "weight" or "amount" as used herein with respect to the percentage of an ingredient refers to the amount of raw material comprising the ingredient, where the raw material may be described herein as comprising less than and up to 100% of the ingredient's activity. Accordingly, the weight percentage of an active in a composition is represented as the amount of raw material containing the active that is used and may or may not reflect the final percentage of the active, the final percentage of the active depending on the weight percentage of the active in the raw material.

[0121] The terms "weight percent" and "weight %" may be used interchangeably and mean the percentage by weight, based on the total weight of a composition, article, or material, except as may be specified with respect to, for example, a phase or system that is a component of a composition, article, or material. All ranges and amounts set forth herein are intended to include sub-ranges and amounts using any disclosed point as a boundary. A given range of "about 1% to 10%" is intended to have both its 1% and 10% bounds modified by the term "about." Further, a range is intended to include the bounds and all numbers within the range unless expressly stated otherwise.Still further, it is understood that where a quantity of a component is given, it is intended to mean the quantity of active ingredient unless expressly stated otherwise.

[0122] Although the numerical ranges and parameters defining the general scope of the disclosure are approximations, unless otherwise indicated, the numerical values presented in the specific examples are reported as accurately as possible. However, any numerical value inherently contains certain errors necessarily resulting from the standard deviation observed in their respective test measurements. The following example serves to illustrate embodiments of the present disclosure without, however, being limiting in nature.
