Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: Method for connecting two fire-resistant mattresses or blankets in an expansion joint
[0001] The present invention relates to the field of firestopping systems, and in particular to a method of connecting two firestopping mattresses or mats in an expansion joint, and to a firestopping mattress or mat assembly in which at least two firestopping mattresses or mats are connected in an expansion joint using said connection method.
[0002] In a concrete structure, expansion joints allow the concrete to expand and contract freely under the effect of temperature variations, thus preventing cracking. Expansion joints can also serve as seismic joints to prevent collisions between buildings. An expansion joint is defined as a linear gap extending the full thickness of the slab or wall of the structure.
[0003] However, these expansion joints are conducive to the spread of fire in the event of a fire, so passive fire protection measures must be taken with regard to these expansion joints. One possible measure is to seal the expansion joint using a fire-resistant sealing system (such as a fireproof mat, mattress, panel, or cord made of mineral material, in particular) installed along the entire length of the expansion joint in order to prevent the passage of flames and smoke in the event of a fire, and thus prevent the spread of fire.
[0004] French patent application FR3001984A1 discloses an existing fireproof mattress in the form of an outer casing filled with loosely chopped mineral fibers. However, the inner core of this existing fireproof mattress is a single layer and does not provide optimal fire resistance.
[0005] Since firestop mattresses or mats generally have a standard length of five meters, several firestop mattresses or mats are required to seal an expansion joint that can be several tens of meters long, the firestop mattresses or mats being installed end to end in the expansion joint. However, generally, no connecting means are used to join the contiguous ends of two adjacent firestop mattresses or mats, so that an air gap or space may be present between the two adjacent firestop mattresses or mats in the expansion joint, an air gap or space which, in the event of a fire, can cause the propagation of flames and smoke through it.
[0006] The present invention aims to resolve the disadvantages of the prior art, by proposing a method of connecting two fireproof mattresses or blankets in an expansion joint, which makes it possible to guarantee the absence of an air gap or interstice between the two connected fireproof mattresses or blankets, and which makes it possible to obtain a continuous fireproof, thermal and acoustic sealing system with improved fire resistance due to the presence of an insulating air gap in the core of the fireproof mattresses or blankets.
[0007] The present invention therefore relates to a method for connecting two fire-resistant mattresses or blankets in an expansion joint, the two fire-resistant mattresses or blankets being identical and each comprising an outer sheath of glass fibers having an elongated shape and defining an internal volume, and an inner core disposed in the internal volume of the outer sheath and comprising at least two superimposed layers of mineral fibers resting on a support layer of glass fibers such that an air gap is formed between the lower part of the outer sheath and the support layer of glass fibers, characterized by the fact that the method comprises: - butting the at least two superimposed layers of mineral fibers of one of the two firestop mats or blankets with the at least two superimposed layers of mineral fibers of the other of the two firestop mats or blankets such that two adjacent buttocks of mineral fiber layers in the direction of superposition of the mineral fiber layers are offset in the longitudinal direction of the expansion joint; - butting the fiberglass support layers of the two firestop mats or blankets such that said buttock of the fiberglass support layers is offset in the longitudinal direction of the expansion joint relative to the buttock of the lower mineral fiber layers of the two firestop mats or blankets; and - overlapping the outer covers of the two firestop mats or blankets,in order to prevent the formation of an air gap between the two connected fireproof mattresses or blankets.
[0008] For each of the at least two fireproof mattresses or blankets, given that air is a very good insulator due to its very low thermal conductivity, the insulating air gap present under the fiberglass support layer and trapped inside the outer envelope improves the fire resistance of the fireproof mattress or blanket.
[0009] It should be noted that the fireproof mattress or blanket could also include an additional insulating air gap formed between the upper part of the outer envelope and the upper mineral fiber layer of the at least two superimposed mineral fiber layers, without departing from the scope of the present invention, so as to further improve the fire resistance of the fireproof mattress or blanket.
[0010] When the fireproof mattress or mat is installed in the expansion joint, the layers of mineral fibers are substantially horizontal, i.e. perpendicular to the thickness of the building elements forming the expansion joint (in reality, the layers of mineral fibers are slightly curved due to the force of gravity).
[0011] Suspending the mineral fiber layers in the internal volume of the outer envelope using the fiberglass support layer makes it possible to create a sufficient air gap in the lower part of the inner core, over the entire width and length of the fireproof mattress or blanket.
[0012] With the connection method according to the present invention, the offset of the buttocks at each layer of the inner core makes it possible to guarantee the continuity of the whole fireproof mattress or blanket, and to avoid the creation of an air gap or interstice between the connected ends of the two fireproof mattresses or blankets.
[0013] Thus, the two fireproof mattresses or sheets are connected by interlocking / overlapping their ends.
[0014] According to a particular feature of the invention, when connecting the outer envelopes of the two fireproof mattresses or blankets by overlapping, the overlapping parts of the outer envelopes are fixed together by gluing.
[0015] According to a particular feature of the invention, the outer casing of each fireproof mattress or mat comprises an upper fiberglass textile and a lower fiberglass textile joined together by stitching at their two lateral edges to form two lateral fastening wings, one of the two lateral edges of the fiberglass support layer being sandwiched between the upper and lower textiles of the outer casing at one of the two lateral fastening wings and connected to them by stitching, the other of the two lateral edges of the fiberglass support layer being sandwiched between the upper and lower textiles of the outer casing at the other of the two lateral fastening wings and connected to them by stitching, the method further comprising: - before the three joining steps,Unpick the side edges of the two ends to be joined of the two fireproof mattresses or mats; and - after the three joining steps, sew the side edges of the two joined ends of the two fireproof mattresses or mats.
[0016] For each of the two fireproof mattresses or blankets, at each of the two lateral fastening tabs, at least one stitching thread connects the lower textile of the outer cover, the fiberglass backing layer, and the upper textile of the outer cover. This at least one stitching thread may, for example, be made of at least one material such as glass, aramid, cotton, metal, or flame-retardant polyester, so as to be fire-resistant.
[0017] The width of the fiberglass support layer is less than that of the lower textile of the outer envelope, such that after edge-to-edge stitching of the fiberglass support layer and the lower textile of the outer envelope, the insulating air gap is created between the lower textile of the outer envelope and the fiberglass support layer.
[0018] Thus, once the ends to be joined of the two fire-resistant mattresses are unstitched, an operator can easily place the different pairs of layers constituting the inner cores of the two fire-resistant mattresses end to end, offsetting them slightly. Once the butt joint of the two inner cores of the two fire-resistant mattresses is complete, the operator can overlap the two outer covers of the two fire-resistant mattresses, and then sew the associated ends of the two joined fire-resistant mattresses to ensure the connection of the inner cores.
[0019] According to a particular feature of the invention, the method further comprises, for each of the two fireproof mattresses or mats, the fixing of the two lateral fixing fins respectively on either side of the expansion joint using at least one of nails, screws and glue.
[0020] Thus, once the fireproof mattresses or mats are installed in the expansion joint, the side fixing fins allow the fireproof mattresses or mats to be fixed to the two construction elements forming the expansion joint, so as to fix the position of the fireproof mattresses or mats in the expansion joint.
[0021] The side fixing fins also serve to position the fireproof mattresses or mats during installation and can also be cut after installation and / or after the glue has dried to free up space on the surface.
[0022] According to a particular feature of the invention, the method further comprises, after the step of unsewing and before the three connecting steps: - at each end to be connected of the two fireproof mattresses or blankets, cutting one or more of the at least two layers of mineral fibers so that the associated end of the core of the associated fireproof mattress or blanket is crenellated and complementary to the crenellated end of the core of the other fireproof mattress or blanket.
[0023] Thus, after cutting, the operator can easily connect by interlocking the two crenellated and complementary ends of the two fireproof mattresses or sheets.
[0024] The present invention also relates to a fireproof mattress or mat assembly comprising at least two identical fireproof mattresses or mats, each comprising an elongated fiberglass outer casing defining an internal volume, and an inner core disposed within the internal volume of the outer casing and comprising at least two superimposed layers of mineral fibers resting on a fiberglass support layer such that a an air gap is formed between the lower part of the outer envelope and the fiberglass support layer, said at least two fireproof mattresses or blankets being installed successively and connected in an expansion joint using the connection method as described above.
[0025] According to a particular feature of the invention, for each fireproof mattress or mat, the outer cover is made of at least one of a woven glass fiber textile and a non-woven glass fiber textile, optionally coated with a polymer.
[0026] The glass fibers of the woven textile or non-woven textile of the outer envelope may be of type C, E or S, so as to resist fire.
[0027] Woven or non-woven glass fiber textiles can also be coated with a polymer, in order to increase the air and water tightness performance of the outer casing.
[0028] According to a particular feature of the invention, for each fireproof mattress or mat, the at least two layers of mineral fibers are made in at least one of glass wool, rock wool and biosoluble fibers, the at least two layers of mineral fibers being optionally surfaced with an aluminum film.
[0029] Each layer of mineral fibers can be faced with a warm-side reflective aluminum film, the aluminum film (optionally reinforced) improving fire resistance.
[0030] According to a particular feature of the invention, for each fireproof mattress or mat, the outer cover comprises an upper fiberglass textile and a lower fiberglass textile joined together by stitching at their two lateral edges to form two lateral fixing wings, one of the two lateral edges of the fiberglass support layer being sandwiched between the upper and lower textiles of the outer cover at one of the two lateral fixing wings and connected to them by stitching, and the other of the two lateral edges of the fiberglass support layer being sandwiched between the upper and lower textiles of the outer cover at the other of the two lateral fixing wings and connected to them by stitching, the fiberglass support layer being made of at least one of a woven fiberglass textile and a non-woven fiberglass textile.
[0031] The glass fibers of the woven textile or non-woven textile of the support layer may be of type C, E or S, so as to resist fire.
[0032] Preferably, the support layer is a non-woven textile of the felt type.
[0033] Preferably, each air gap of the inner core of the mattress or fireproof mat to The inside of the outer casing has a thickness between 1 and 50 mm.
[0034] Preferably, each layer of mineral fibers has a thickness between 2 and 100 mm.
[0035] Preferably, the glass fiber textile constituting the outer envelope has a thickness between 0.2 and 5 mm.
[0036] Preferably, the glass fiber textile constituting the support layer has a thickness between 0.2 and 5 mm.
[0037] To better illustrate the object of the present invention, a preferred embodiment will be described below, by way of illustration and not limitation, with reference to the attached drawings.
[0038] On these drawings:
[0039] [Fig. 1] is a perspective view of a fire-resistant mattress according to the present invention, installed in an expansion joint of a structure; and
[0040] [Fig.2] is a perspective view of two installed and connected fire-resistant mattresses in an expansion joint, in which a circular cut has been made at the connection of the two fire-resistant mattresses so as to reveal the different layers of the two connected fire-resistant mattresses.
[0041] Referring to [Fig. 1], it can be seen that it depicts a linear fire-resistant, thermal, and acoustic sealing mat 1 according to the present invention. It should be noted that the fire-resistant mat 1 could also be a fire-resistant blanket, without departing from the scope of the present invention.
[0042] An expansion joint 2 is formed between two structural elements 3a and 3b that are part of a structure such as a slab or a wall. The firestop mattress 1 is installed inside the expansion joint 2, across its entire width, so as to prevent the spread of fire into the expansion joint 2 in the event of a fire.
[0043] The fireproof mattress 1 comprises an outer fiberglass envelope 4 having an elongated shape and defining an inner volume 5 having a substantially rectangular cross-section.
[0044] The outer envelope 4 comprises an upper glass fiber textile 4a and a lower glass fiber textile 4b.
[0045] The upper glass fiber textile 4a and the lower glass fiber textile 4b of the outer envelope 4 are connected together, using sewing threads 12, at their two lateral edges, in order to form two lateral fixing wings 6a and 6b in the upper part of the fireproof mattress 1.
[0046] Thus, once the fire-resistant mattress 1 is installed in the expansion joint 2 so that the internal volume 5 of the external envelope 4 is located inside the expansion joint 2, the two lateral fixing fins 6a and 6b rest respectively on the two construction elements 3a and 3b and allow the fixing the fireproof mattress 1 to the two construction elements 3a and 3b using nails and / or screws and / or glue.
[0047] Each of the upper textile 4a and lower textile 4b of the outer envelope 4 is either a woven glass fiber textile or a non-woven glass fiber textile, the glass fibers being of type C, E or S, which allows the outer envelope 4 to be configured to resist fire.
[0048] Preferably, each of the upper textile 4a and lower textile 4b of the outer envelope 4 has a thickness between 0.2 and 5 mm.
[0049] Advantageously, at least one of the upper textile 4a and lower textile 4b of the outer envelope 4 is coated with a polymer in order to increase the air and water tightness performance of the outer envelope 4.
[0050] The fireproof mattress 1 further comprises an inner core disposed in the inner volume 5 of the outer envelope 4 and comprising, over the entire width and length of the inner volume 5, an air gap 8 and two superimposed layers of mineral fibers 10a and 10b resting on a support layer of glass fibers 11 disposed above the air gap 8 such that the two superimposed layers of mineral fibers 10a and 10b are suspended above the air gap 8.
[0051] The inner core of the fireproof mattress 1 could also include an additional air gap (not visible in [Fig.1]) formed between the upper mineral fiber layer 10a and the upper textile 4a of the outer cover 4.
[0052] It should be noted that the inner core could also comprise any number of superimposed layers of mineral fibers 10a, 10b, without departing from the scope of the present invention.
[0053] The two layers of mineral fibers 10a and 10b are each made of at least one of glass wool, rock wool and biosoluble fibers.
[0054] Preferably, each of the two layers of mineral fibers 10a and 10b has a substantially constant thickness of between 2 and 100 mm.
[0055] The two layers of mineral fibers 10a and 10b can be surfaced with an optionally reinforced aluminum film, so as to improve their fire resistance.
[0056] The two layers of mineral fibers 10a and 10b are in the form of sheets of mineral fibers whose width and length correspond substantially to those of the firestop mattress 1, such that the two layers of mineral fibers 10a and 10b are substantially horizontal when the firestop mattress 1 is installed in the expansion joint 2, which makes it possible to obtain a substantially constant thickness for the air gap 8.
[0057] Preferably, the air gap 8 has a thickness between 1 and 50 mm.
[0058] Thus, given that air is a very good insulator due to its very low thermal conductivity, the air gap 8 trapped inside the envelope external 4 allows to improve the fire resistance of the fireproof mattress 1.
[0059] Since the air gap 8 is present over the entire width and length of the internal volume 5 of the external envelope 4, the fire resistance of the fireproof mattress 1 according to the present invention is thus improved.
[0060] One of the two lateral edges of the fiberglass support layer 11 is sandwiched between the upper textile 4a and the lower textile 4b of the outer casing 4 at the level of the first lateral fixing fin 6a and connected to them with a first sewing thread 12, and the other of the two lateral edges of the fiberglass support layer 11 is sandwiched between the upper textile 4a and the lower textile 4b of the outer casing 4 at the level of the second lateral fixing fin 6b and connected to them with a second sewing thread 12.
[0061] The width of the fiberglass support layer 11 is less than that of the lower textile 4b of the outer envelope 4, such that after edge-to-edge stitching of the fiberglass support layer 11 and the lower textile 4b of the outer envelope 4, the insulating air gap 8 is created between the lower textile 4b of the outer envelope 4 and the fiberglass support layer 11.
[0062] Each of the two sewing threads 12 is made of at least one material among glass, aramid, cotton, metal and flame-retardant polyester, i.e. a material configured to resist fire.
[0063] The fiberglass backing layer 11 is either a woven fiberglass textile or a non-woven fiberglass textile (such as a fiberglass felt), the fiberglass being of type C, E or S, which allows the backing layer 11 to be configured to resist fire.
[0064] Preferably, the glass fiber textile constituting the support layer 11 has a thickness between 0.2 and 5 mm.
[0065] If we refer to [Fig.2], we can see that it shows two fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101 installed and connected in an expansion joint 2 by interlocking / overlapping their ends, a circular cut having been made on [Fig.2] at the connection of the two fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101 so as to show the different layers of the two connected fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101.
[0066] The two fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101 are structurally identical to that shown in [Fig.1].
[0067] The common elements between the first fire-resistant mattress 1 and the second fire-resistant mattress 101 bear the same reference number to which 100 has been added and will not be described in more detail here when they are of identical structures.
[0068] The two fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101 are connected in the expansion joint 2 by:
[0069] - butting of the two upper layers of mineral fibers 10a and 110a of the two fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101, and connection by butting of the two lower mineral fiber layers 10b and 110b of the two fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101, such that the position of the abutment of the upper mineral fiber layers 10a and 110a is offset in the length direction of the expansion joint 2 relative to the position of the abutment of the lower mineral fiber layers 10b and 110b;
[0070] - connection by butting of the two layers of glass fiber support 11 and 111 of the two fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101 such that the position of the abutment of the fiberglass support layers 11 and 111 is offset in the length direction of the expansion joint 2 relative to the position of the abutment of the lower mineral fiber layers 10b and 110b; and
[0071] - connection by overlapping of the two outer envelopes 4 and 104 of the two fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101 (the upper textiles 4a and 104a of the two outer envelopes 4 and 104 overlapping, and the lower textiles 4b and 104b of the two outer envelopes 4 and 104 overlapping),
[0072] so as to prevent the creation of an air gap or a gap at the connection between the two fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101.
[0073] The offset of the buttocks at each layer of the inner core of the fire-stopping mattresses 1 and 101 thus makes it possible to guarantee the continuity of the entire fire-stopping mattress assembly in the expansion joint 2.
[0074] When connecting the outer envelopes 4 and 104 of the two fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101 by overlapping, the overlapping parts of the outer envelopes 4 and 104 can be fixed together by gluing.
[0075] Prior to connecting the two fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101, the lateral edges of the two ends to be connected of the two fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101 can be unstitched so as to allow an operator to then easily place end to end in a staggered arrangement the different pairs of layers constituting the internal cores of the two fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101. Subsequently, after connecting the two fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101, the lateral edges of the two connected ends of the two fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101 can be sewn back together.
[0076] In addition, before connecting the two fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101, an operator may make cuts in some of the layers of mineral fibers 10a, 10b, 110a and 110b, so that the two ends to be connected of the two fire-resistant mattresses 1 and 101 are notched and complementary so as to allow their interlocking / intertwining.
[0077] By way of example, the operator may cut a certain length of the upper mineral fiber layer 10a of the first fire-resistant mattress 1 and the same length of the lower mineral fiber layer 110b of the second fire-resistant mattress 101, so as to allow the interlocking connection of the mineral fiber layers 10a, 10b, 110a and 110b of the two fireproof mattresses 1 and 101.
[0078] It is understood that the particular embodiment just described has been given by way of example and not limitation, and that modifications may be made without departing from the present invention.
