AI Technical Summary
Existing motor vehicle bumper systems face challenges in optimizing the safety, ergonomics, cost, and lateral positioning precision of shock absorber elements, particularly due to complex assembly requirements and potential damage to the bumper skin during collisions.
The shock absorber element features a transversely stretching absorption body with vertically extending transverse ends, an external surface, and an internal surface that mounts longitudinally against a crosspiece. A longitudinal extension at the transverse ends positions the absorber element accurately against the crosspiece's lateral edge, eliminating the need for adaptations or piercings, and covers the crosspiece's sharp edge to prevent damage to the bumper skin.
This solution enhances the positioning accuracy, ergonomics, and safety of the shock absorber element, simplifying assembly and reducing the risk of bumper skin damage during collisions, while maintaining optimal energy absorption capabilities.

Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: Absorber for rear bumper system of motor vehicle
[0001] The invention relates to the field of shock-absorbing elements for motor vehicles. The invention deals with the transverse positioning of a shock-absorbing element relative to a crossmember in a motor vehicle bumper system. More specifically, the invention relates to a shock-absorbing element for a motor vehicle bumper system. The invention also relates to a motor vehicle.
[0002] At both the front and rear, a motor vehicle has a bumper system. A bumper system incorporates a bumper skin that forms the bodywork. The bumper skin covers the vehicle's structure and incorporates various safety elements such as a crossmember, a shock absorber, and housings on the sides of the crossmember. The various elements of the bumper system contribute to the perceived quality by maintaining precise and consistent mechanical clearances.
[0003] For repairability reasons, the various components of the bumper system are designed to deform and then return to their original position following a low-speed impact; for example, during a parking maneuver. During a higher-speed impact, some components are irreversibly deformed to protect other components. This simplifies the repairs required by such an impact.
[0004] In order to perform their prescribed functions, the various elements must be positioned precisely relative to one another. In particular, the shock-absorbing element must be specifically centered on its cross member to provide optimal damping over its entire length.
[0005] Document EP2687409B1 describes a motor vehicle comprising a front bumper structure. The bumper structure includes a bumper skin, a crossmember, and an impact-absorbing element mounted on the crossmember and opposite the bumper skin. At its lateral ends, the impact-absorbing element has inclined faces and plate-shaped elements against the inclined faces. The rear surface of the impact-absorbing element is arranged in a planar-to-planar contact with a front surface of the crossmember. The impact-absorbing element is attached to the crossmember by clips.
[0006] Document FR3123275A1 describes a motor vehicle assembly comprising a bumper beam and two absorbers. The bumper beam is formed by a hollow body comprising at least one inner wall to which the absorbers are attached, and at least one outer wall opposite the inner wall. The wall The outer surface of the hollow body comprises an inner face and an outer face. The outer wall of the bumper beam has at least two mounting holes, each with a corresponding mounting device. Each mounting device does not protrude from the outer face of the outer wall. The assembly also includes a trim element with positioning arms that rest above the bumper beam. The positioning arms hold the trim element in place during installation, thus improving ergonomics.
[0007] US patent 8016331B2 describes a motor vehicle bumper system. The bumper system includes an elongated reinforcement beam for mounting on a vehicle chassis and an energy absorber abutting a front surface of the reinforcement beam. The energy absorber comprises longitudinally elongated hollow crush lobes configured to crush and absorb energy in an accident such as a frontal collision. The crush lobes include interconnected upper, lower, lateral, and front walls. The upper and lower walls are elongated parallel to a length of the beam to define enlarged areas. The energy absorber includes a rear wall with upper and lower retaining flanges for securing it to the reinforcement beam. The rear face of the crush lobes includes hook-shaped connectors that engage in holes in the reinforcing beam.
[0008] These connectors contribute to the transverse positioning of a crushing lobe relative to the reinforcing beam. However, these connectors require holes that weaken the reinforcing beam. Indeed, the holes constitute potential points of failure. Safety is compromised. Furthermore, the assembly is complex since each connector must fit into its designated hole.
[0009] The invention aims to address at least one of the problems or drawbacks encountered in the prior art. In particular, the invention aims to optimize the safety and lateral positioning accuracy of a shock absorber for a motor vehicle bumper system. The invention also aims to optimize the safety, ergonomics, cost, and lateral positioning accuracy of a shock absorber for a motor vehicle bumper system.

[0011] The invention allows the shock-absorbing element to be positioned relative to the crossmember by directly using one of its lateral edges. Thus, positioning is achieved without modifying, or in particular without drilling, the crossmember. Furthermore, the longitudinal extension covers a sharp external edge of the crossmember. This reduces the risk of the external edge damaging the bumper skin in the event of a collision. Therefore, the invention optimizes positioning accuracy, ergonomics, and safety.

[0043] The [Fig.6] is a cross-section of a transverse gap between a cross member and a shock-absorbing element of an assembly for a motor vehicle bumper system according to the invention.
[0044] In the following description, the term "include" is synonymous with "include" and is not limiting in that it permits the presence of other elements in the motor vehicle or the shock-absorbing element to which it relates. It is understood that the term "include" includes the terms "consist of". The terms "external" and "internal" shall respectively refer to what is directed outward from the vehicle and inward from the vehicle.
[0045] In this description, the terms "longitudinal," "longitudinally," "transverse," and "transversely" are used with respect to the vehicle's frame of reference in the mounting configuration. The term "longitudinal" refers to the principal direction of travel of the vehicle. The term "transverse" refers to a direction perpendicular to the principal direction of travel of the vehicle. The term "front" refers to the principal direction of travel of the vehicle. The term "rear" refers to the opposite of the front of the vehicle.
[0046] The X-axis represents the longitudinal direction, the Y-axis represents the transverse direction, and the Z-axis represents the vertical direction of the motor vehicle. These three axes define a right-handed trihedron whose orientation is preserved throughout the figures.
[0047] In this description, the terms "vertical" and "horizontal" are not to be understood in their strict sense. Indeed, they allow an inclination of at most 20°, preferably at most 10°, more preferably at most 5°, and even more preferably at most 2°; with respect to the strict meaning of these terms.
[0048] In this description, the technical characteristics are defined in the mounting configuration of the assembly and the shock absorber element, unless otherwise explicitly stated.
[0049] Throughout the description, the different figures use the same reference signs to designate identical or similar entities.
[0050] Figure 1 shows, from the rear, a motor vehicle 10 according to the invention. The motor vehicle 10 comprises energy storage means and at least one motor (not shown) adapted to drive said motor vehicle 10. The bumper skin 12 is highlighted. In this case, the bumper skin 12 is a rear bumper skin.
[0051] The motor vehicle 10 comprises a structure 14. The structure 14 forms an outer body, or the main frame of the motor vehicle. The structure 14 delineates different compartments of the motor vehicle 10, including the passenger compartment, the cargo area, and the engine compartment (not shown). The structure 14 may be formed from an assembly of stamped and welded sheet metal parts.
[0052] The structure 14 connects various parts of the motor vehicle 10, including the openings. The structure 14 forms a mounting support for the powertrain, suspension systems, steering system, and braking systems. The structure 14 supports the bumper skin 12. The bumper skin 12 has a central opening for an opening such as the trunk lid (not shown). It can extend to accommodate lighting devices (not shown).
[0053] The motor vehicle 10 has a bumper system 16 including the skin of Bumper 12. The bumper system 16 also includes a crossmember 18 connected to the structure 14. It can be attached to the crossmember using impact absorption boxes 20, commonly referred to as "crash boxes." In a collision at a speed exceeding a threshold speed, possibly at least 30 km / h, these impact absorption boxes 20 deform, absorbing the energy of the impact. They act as sacrificial shock absorbers.
[0054] The motor vehicle can, for example, be a private motor vehicle or a commercial motor vehicle.
[0055] Figure 2 shows a motor vehicle bumper system 16. The motor vehicle may correspond to the one shown in relation to Figure 1.
[0056] The bumper system 16 includes a bumper skin 12, a cross member 18, absorption boxes 20 optionally having mounting plates opposite the cross member 18. The cross member 18 is generally arched with an outward arrow.
[0057] The bumper system 16 further includes a shock-absorbing element 22. The shock-absorbing element 22 is configured to absorb impact energy by deforming longitudinally. The shock-absorbing element 22 is arranged between the bumper skin 12 and the crossmember 18. It conforms to the curve of the crossmember 18 and / or the bumper skin 12. In the event of a collision with the latter, at the first threshold speed or during a parking maneuver, the impact energy is transmitted by the shock-absorbing element 22 to the crossmember 18; which in turn transmits this energy to the rest of the structure via the absorption boxes 20. Depending on the speed of the collision, the impact energy is absorbed by some of these components.
[0058] Figure 3 shows an assembly 24 for a motor vehicle bumper system. The motor vehicle may correspond to the one shown in relation to one of Figures 1 to 2. The assembly 24 includes a cross member 18 and the shock-absorbing element 22 that it carries.
[0059] The shock-absorbing element 22 comprises a transversely extending absorption body 26 pressed against the cross member 18. The absorption body 26 is configured to absorb the energy of an impact by deforming longitudinally, in particular by irreversibly crushing. It forms a fusible body. The absorption body 26 comprises two vertically extending transverse ends 28. The transverse ends 28 are transversely opposed.
[0060] The absorption body 26 has: an external surface 30, an internal surface 32 connecting the two transverse ends 28 and arranged against the cross member 18. The external surface 30 and the internal surface 32 are longitudinally opposed. They extend substantially over the entire width of the shock-absorbing element 22. Transversely, the internal surface 32 completely covers the cross member 18 and extends beyond it.
[0061] The cross member 18 has two transversely opposed lateral edges 34. The lateral edges 34 are distant from the absorption chambers 20.
[0062] The shock-absorbing element 22 comprises a longitudinal extension 36 at at least one, preferably at each transverse end 28 of the absorption body 26. Each longitudinal extension 36 extends from the inner surface 32 so as to position the shock-absorbing element 22 relative to one of the lateral edges 34 of the cross member 18. Each longitudinal extension 36 forms a transverse positioning stop. The cross member 18 is positioned between the longitudinal extensions 36 that border it.
[0063] The shock-absorbing element 22 comprises at least one, preferably two, upper hooks 38. The upper hooks 38 are adapted to hook the shock-absorbing element 22 to the cross member 18. The upper hooks 38 pass longitudinally through the cross member 18. They extend from the inner surface 32; therefore on the same side as the longitudinal extensions 36. The inner surface 32 forms a positioning surface.
[0064] The shock-absorbing element 22 is symmetrical about a longitudinal and vertical plane 40, i.e., about a sagittal plane. The plane 40 is perpendicular to the transverse direction. Thus, the longitudinal extensions 36 include a first longitudinal extension and a second longitudinal extension; each at one of the two transverse ends 28 of the absorption body 26. The first and second longitudinal extensions are identical and symmetrical with respect to the plane 40.
[0065] Figure 4 shows a front view of the assembly 24 for a motor vehicle bumper system. The motor vehicle may correspond to the one shown in relation to one of Figures 1 to 3. The cross member 18 is visible in the background through its mounting plates 42, which have mounting holes.
[0066] The shock-absorbing element 22 includes at least one upper hook 38 above the cross member 18. The upper hooks 38 protrude above the absorption body 26 since the latter is limited to the extent of the cross member 18 in order to optimize its mass relative to the damping it provides.
[0067] Generally, the upper hooks 38 can be longitudinal branches extending horizontally from the absorption body 26.
[0068] The shock-absorbing element 22 comprises a row of mounting holes 44. Some of these mounting holes 44 may be offset by up to 5 cm, preferably by up to 2 cm, from their median axis. The mounting holes 44 pass longitudinally through the absorption body 26. The mounting holes 44 are vertically aligned with the longitudinal extensions 36 (shown in dashed lines). Thus, each longitudinal extension 36 allows for forward transverse positioning fixing via the fixing holes 44. This facilitates the matching of the fixing holes 44 with the fixing means of the cross member 18. The invention improves ergonomics during the assembly of the assembly 24.
[0069] In the present embodiment, the absorption body 26 comprises a plastic material. The shock-absorbing element 22 is injection-molded. It is a single piece. The single-piece construction improves its behavior in the event of a collision. The plastic material is dense, that is to say, it has a density greater than or equal to 0.80; preferably greater than or equal to 0.90.
[0070] The absorption body 26 comprises at least one transverse row of longitudinally open cells 46. It may comprise three superimposed transverse rows of cells 46. The cells 46 are open outwards, or inwards and are closed by the cross member 18. This configuration improves the control of programmed deformation in the event of a collision.
[0071] According to an alternative embodiment of the invention, the absorption body comprises foam, such as polyurethane foam. It then forms a solid block of foam.
[0072] Figure 5 shows one side of a 24-piece assembly for a bumper system motor vehicle. The motor vehicle may correspond to the one shown in relation to one of figures 1 to 4. Assembly 24 is viewed from the rear.
[0073] The shock-absorbing element 22 includes a longitudinal extension 36 at the transverse end 28 of the absorption body 26. The longitudinal extension 36 extends from the internal surface 32 of the absorption body 26, which makes it possible to form a transverse positioning portion by taking the cross member 18, and more specifically the lateral edge 34, as a reference. During assembly, the operator positions the longitudinal extension 36 against, or near, the lateral edge 34, which makes it possible to achieve a target centering.
[0074] At the transverse end 28, the absorption body 26 has a longitudinal thickness greater than its longitudinal extension. This aspect optimizes the mass and the energy absorption capacity.
[0075] The longitudinal extension 36 forms a protrusion on the internal surface 32. It forms a positioning stop there. The longitudinal extension 36 covers the lateral edge 34. It partially obscures it. According to one option, the longitudinal extension 36 and the lateral edge 34 are in transverse contact.
[0076] The longitudinal extension 36 comprises a vertical blade 48 projecting from the internal surface 32. The vertical blade 48 extends primarily vertically. It also extends longitudinally. It is perpendicular to the transverse direction. It has a transverse thickness of less than 10 mm, preferably less than 5 mm. The vertical blade 48 has a transverse thickness of between 0.5 mm and 5.00 mm, preferably between 1 mm and 3 mm. These values optimize rigidity, mass and compactness.
[0077] The longitudinal extension 36 extends vertically over at least one vertical half of the absorption body 26; preferably over the entire height of the absorption body 26. The longitudinal extension 36 extends longitudinally over 10 mm to 50 mm; preferably, over 15 mm to 25 mm. These dimensions improve the stability of the shock-absorbing element 22 on the cross member 18 before it is fixed by pins.
[0078] The shock-absorbing element 22 includes at least one upper hook 38 engaged on the cross member 18. This hook allows the shock-absorbing element 22 to be suspended from it. The upper hook 38 extends longitudinally at the level of the longitudinal extension 36. They overlap longitudinally. The upper hook 38 extends vertically and / or longitudinally at the level of the longitudinal extension 36.
[0079] The upper hook 38 includes a vertical tab 50. The vertical tab 50 is configured to provide longitudinal retention against the cross member 18. The vertical tab 50 extends downwards. It vertically overlaps the longitudinal extension 36. The vertical tab 50 is transversely and / or longitudinally distant from the longitudinal extension 36.
[0080] The geometry of the upper hook 38 combined with that of the longitudinal extension 36 improves stability and positioning accuracy.
[0081] Figure 6 is a horizontal cross-section of the assembly 24 for a motor vehicle bumper system. The motor vehicle may correspond to the one shown in relation to one of Figures 1 to 5. A transverse row of cells 46 is visible. The cells 46 are delimited by a wall describing crenellations. The absorption body 26 is a hollow body.
[0082] The shock-absorbing element 22 comprises a longitudinal extension 36 forming a bent portion at its lateral end 28. The longitudinal extension 36 is perpendicular to the internal surface 32. The longitudinal extension 36 comprises a vertical blade 48 projecting from the internal surface 32. The longitudinal extension 36 is transverse to the lateral edge 34 of the cross member 18.
[0083] The longitudinal extension 36 extends longitudinally over 10 mm to 50 mm; preferably, over 15 mm to 25 mm. This length allows it to cover the radii of curvature present at the lateral edge 34. It prevents incorrect positioning.
[0084] The cross member 18 commonly includes a metal profile whose limits are cut and left as cut.
[0085] The lateral edge 34 has a sharp edge 56; or more generally, a protruding shape. In the event of a collision, this protruding shape is liable to damage the bumper skin. Such damage can occur during low-speed collisions such as during a parking maneuver. Such a collision is also called a "parking bump." It occurs at a speed less than or equal to a Second speed threshold; for example, up to 5 km / h. Thanks to the longitudinal extension 36, the shock-absorbing element 22 covers the sharp edge 56 of the lateral edge 34. The risk of the latter damaging the bumper skin is reduced. Therefore, the invention optimizes positioning accuracy, ease of assembly, and protection of the bumper skin in the event of a collision.
[0086] The absorption body 26 comprises a transverse extension 52 connected to the longitudinal extension 36. The longitudinal extension 36 is mounted on the transverse extension 52. The transverse extension 52 forms an extension. It allows the longitudinal extension 36 to be offset significantly from the absorption body 26. It also promotes support against the cross member 18, and thus optimizes the transmission of force in the event of a collision. It covers the sharp edge 56.
[0087] The bumper system includes a transverse gap 58 between the longitudinal extension 36 and the lateral edge 34 of the cross member 18. The transverse gap 58 facilitates the contact of the shock-absorbing element 22 with the cross member 18. For example, the transverse gap 58 is between 3 mm and 10 mm, preferably between 4 mm and 6 mm. The transverse gap 58 may be an average size.
[0088] The cross member 18 includes a mounting opening 60 for the shock-absorbing element 22. The mounting opening 60 includes an inner diameter 62 smaller than said transverse clearance 58. This configuration allows the mounting opening 60 to be aligned despite a transverse offset of the shock-absorbing element 22.
[0089] According to a preferred embodiment, the shock-absorbing element 22 is made of a plastic or composite material. The plastic material may include a thermoplastic or thermosetting material. According to a preferred embodiment, the plastic material is selected from the group comprising polypropylene, polyamide, polyphthalamide, polyetheretherketone, polyphenylene sulfide, polyamide-imide, polyetherimide, polyarylamide, polyepoxide, unsaturated polyester, vinyl ester, or polyester-vinylester resins. For example, the composite material comprises a matrix of a plastic material as described above with reinforcement. For example, the reinforcement comprises glass or carbon fibers.
[0090] The shock-absorbing element 22 comprises at least 10% by weight of recycled plastic material based on the total weight of the plastic material; preferably from 10 to 80% by weight; more preferably from 20 to 60% by weight or from 30 to 40% by weight. The use of recycled plastic material reduces the vehicle's environmental footprint.
[0091] The invention comprises the combination of all the embodiments presented by all the figures.
[0092] Figures 2 to 6 are isometric views. They each respect a specific scale, real angles and real proportions.
