"Swelling clay" is understood to mean a clay material capable of swelling in water. Smectite clays are an example of a swelling clay. The crystal structure of the smectite group is an octahedral alumina sheet sandwiched between two tetrahedral silica sheets. In one particular embodiment, the swelling clay is bentonite. Bentonite is a rock formed from highly colloidal and plastic clays composed primarily of montmorillonite, a clay mineral of the smectite group, and is produced by the in-situ devitrification of volcanic ash. In addition to montmorillonite, bentonite may contain feldspar, cristobalite, and crystalline quartz. Bentonite has the ability to form thixotropic gels with water, an ability to absorb large quantities of water.Variations in interstitial water and exchangeable cations in the intercalated space affect the properties of bentonite and therefore the commercial uses of different types of bentonite.
[0086] A notable swelling clay suitable for use in cosmetic formulations is BENTONE GEL® ISD V dispersion, commercially available from Elementis Specialties, East Windsor, New Jersey. BENTONE GEL® GTCC V dispersion is an organically modified (disterammonium) hectorite dispersion in isododecane with added propylene carbonate.

The cosmetic premix compositions may be free or substantially free of hydrophobic silica aerogels.
[0090] Silica aerogels are porous materials obtained by replacing (by drying) the liquid component of a silica gel with air. They are usually synthesized via a sol-gel process in a liquid medium and then dried, typically by extraction from a supercritical fluid, most commonly supercritical CO2. This type of drying prevents shrinkage of the pores and the material. The sol-gel process and the various drying processes are described in detail in Brinker, CJ, and Scherer, GW, Sol-Gel Science: New York: Academie Press, 1990. Silica aerogels, in general, were disclosed in US patent no. 9,320,689.
[0091] Examples of hydrophobic silica aerogels that can be used in the invention include the aerogel marketed under the name VM-2260 (INCI name: Silica silylate), by Dow Corning, whose particles have an average size of about 1000 sqm and a specific surface area per unit mass ranging from 600 to 800 m2 / g.
[0092] Examples include aerogels sold by Cabot under the references Aerogel TLD 201, Aerogel OGD 201, Aerogel TLD 203, ENOVA® AEROGEL MT 1100 silica aerogel, ENOVA® AEROGEL MT 1200 silica aerogel.

As used here, the term "emulsion" refers to a generally stable and homogeneous mixture of two liquids that do not normally mix (i.e., they are immiscible), such as vegetable oil and water. Emulsions can be true colloids or less stable mixtures, which tend to separate quickly. An emulsion can often break down (i.e., the liquids separate) due to factors such as mechanical handling, chemical effects, and / or time.
[0096] The emulsifier may be a surfactant. As used here, the term "surfactant" refers to an amphiphilic molecule, namely a molecule that has two parts of different polarities, one generally being lipophilic (soluble or dispersible in the oil phase), and the other being hydrophilic (soluble or dispersible in water), and which is preferably capable of reducing the surface tension of water. Surfactants are characterized by the value of their HLB (hydrophilic-lipophilic balance), the HLB being the ratio between the hydrophilic and lipophilic parts in the molecule. The term "HLB" is well known to those skilled in the art and is described, for example, in "The HLB System: A Time-Saving Guide to Emulsifier Selection" (Published by ICI Americas Inc., 1984). For emulsifying surfactants, the HLB generally ranges from 3 to 8 for the preparation of W / O emulsions and from 8 to 18 for the preparation of O / W emulsions. The HLB of the surfactant(s) used according to the present invention can be determined via the Griffin method or the Davies method.
