Abstract
A cooling system 900, for the heat source of a nuclear fission reactor, includes: a first coolant system 906 for delivering a first coolant 908 evaporated from a first coolant reservoir 902 by the heat source back to the reservoir via a condenser 904; and a second coolant flow path 920 comprising, in series, a second coolant flow intake duct 922, the first reservoir 902 and a second coolant flow exhaust duct 932. The second coolant is only able to flow along the second coolant flow path 920 when the first coolant in reservoir 902 drops below a predetermined level L1 therein. The first and second coolants may be water and air respectively. Also disclosed is a nuclear reactor fuel assembly comprising a fuel compact unit (136, Fig. 4) located within a sleeve member (132), which is itself provided radially inward of a surrounding pressure tube (120).
