Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention relates to the field of high voltage (HV) connectors. [Background technology]

[0002] Some applications use HV headers, i.e. connectors, mounted on fixed structures such as housings or boards. It is often necessary to ensure safe operation by humans, for example by preventing contact with high voltage electrical components when plugging or unplugging. However, taking such measures is usually costly. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[0003] The object of the present invention is to make the manufacture of HV connectors, and in particular HV headers, easier and more cost-effective while ensuring operational safety. [Means for solving the problem]

[0004] According to the present invention, this is achieved by a touch protection sleeve for an HV header having at least one pin, the pin protruding away from the base plate along a plug-in direction and having a touch protection cap at its distal end, the touch protection sleeve being formed from an injection moldable material and having at least one mounting portion for mounting the touch protection sleeve to the header, the touch protection sleeve forming a receptacle adapted to surround the pin in a spaced apart manner to provide high voltage touch protection.

[0005] Forming the touch protection sleeve from an injection moldable material makes it easier and more cost effective to manufacture compared to traditional solutions where such sleeves are formed from sheet metal by stamping and bending. Having the touch protection sleeve as a separate part allows for modular, selectable use of a traditional full metal shield and a touch protection sleeve depending on the needs of a particular application.

[0006] The solution according to the invention can be further improved by the following further and advantageous developments, which are independent of one another and can be combined in any way as required.

[0007] The touch protection sleeve can be used especially when little or no shielding effect is required for the pin. This may be the case when the wire or cable associated with the pin is used to deliver power as direct current (DC). Touch protection sleeves for such applications can be formed from low-cost moldable materials such as simple plastics to keep costs low. Shielding in this context refers to shielding against external electric and / or magnetic fields.

[0008] In other applications, a stronger shielding effect may be desired. In such cases, the material of the touch protection sleeve may be formed from an injection moldable material that has shielding properties, such as being conductive. In one example, a plastic with an internal conductive material network may be used to provide shielding effect while remaining moldable.

[0009] Alternatively or additionally, a further outer sleeve made of metal can be attached to the touch protection sleeve to provide shielding, as will be explained in more detail below.

[0010] The mounting portion may be configured to mount the touch protection sleeve to the base plate. The mounting portion may protrude from the remainder of the touch protection sleeve in the axial direction and / or in the plug-in direction of the pin.

[0011] In one embodiment, the touch protection sleeve may be configured such that the pin and the touch protection sleeve only have an indirect connection to each other. In particular, in such a case, there is no direct connection or contact. An intermediate piece, preferably made of an electrically insulating material, may connect the two.

[0012] In particular, the touch protection effect can be achieved by spacing the pins and the touch protection sleeve at the distal end to prevent contact of the test fingers with the high voltage electrical components. The size and shape of the test fingers can be specified in a standard or regulation, such as a national, international, or corporate standard. Similarly, the parameters of the pins, headers, and mating connectors can also be specified in such a standard or regulation.

[0013] In one embodiment, the touch protection sleeve can be adapted to be sealingly attached to the base plate, which allows for increased clearance and creepage distances for voltages at the pins by eliminating a path for exiting the touch protection sleeve at the base plate.

[0014] According to one development, the touch protection sleeve may comprise two openings at both ends, one of which is adapted to be sealed by the base plate in the mounted state. In that case, in the mounted state, there may be only one opening leading to the pin or only one opening may be opened. This opening may be associated with the distal end of the pin and / or with the touch protection cap. This may help to increase the creepage and clearance distances of the pin.

[0015] In a particularly advantageous embodiment, the opening present in the mounted state is entirely located in a half space defined by a plane extending perpendicular to the axial direction of the pin at a distance of at least 60% of the length of the pin away from the base plate. In that case, the creepage and spatial paths can be particularly long. Preferably, the distance is at least 70%, more preferably at least 80%, in particular at least 90% of the length of the pin away from the base plate.

[0016] The opening should not be mistaken for a small gap between parts attached to each other resulting from manufacturing or assembly tolerances, e.g., less than 1 mm, preferably less than 0.1 mm. The threshold value may depend on whether current can flow through the gap, which in turn may depend on the maximum voltage specified for the header.

[0017] The mounting portion can be located at the end where the opening sealed by the base plate is located to allow for easy mounting, which can be referred to as the proximal end and can be opposite the distal or protruding end of the pin.

[0018] The mounting portion may protrude from the receptacle along a mating direction in which the header and the mating connector are connected to each other, which may also be in the axial direction of the pin or parallel thereto.

[0019] In a further embodiment, the attachment portion may project radially along the pin from the remainder of the touch protection sleeve, in particular outwardly, which may increase the stability of the connection by lengthening the lever and supporting the touch protection sleeve against tilting.

[0020] The mounting portion may comprise two opposing circumferentially elastically deflectable arms, which may facilitate mounting.

[0021] To improve stability, the touch protection sleeve can have two or more attachments. Preferably, the attachments are evenly spaced around the axis of the pin to improve force distribution. The attachments can be at equal angles to each other, for example, 360° / n, where n is the number of attachments.

[0022] In one embodiment, the touch protection sleeve may be provided with at least one polarization feature that allows attachment to the header in only a limited number of possible rotational positions, preferably only one rotational position, thereby ensuring proper attachment of the touch protection sleeve to the header. Rotational position is to be understood as a rotation about the axis of the pin.

[0023] In an advantageous embodiment, at least one attachment portion serves as a polarization mechanism, making the manufacture of such a touch protection sleeve easier since only one mechanism needs to be designed and manufactured.

[0024] According to one advantageous development, the touch protection sleeve may comprise at least one terminal lock assurance part adapted to block movement of the terminal lock of the counter connector out of the locked position.

[0025] The touch protection sleeve comprises at least two terminal lock assurance parts, each adapted to block the movement of a terminal lock, preferably the same terminal lock, of a mating connector out of a locked position, which can improve safety.

[0026] In particular, the terminal lock assurance parts can be arranged at different depths along the plug-in direction, thereby increasing the possible number of terminal lock assurance parts.

[0027] Additionally or alternatively, the two terminal locking assurance parts are arranged in different rotational positions, which may help to further increase the number of terminal locking assurance parts.

[0028] In a development which is simple to manufacture, the at least one terminal locking security part may be formed as a thickened edge, which may in particular be an edge or a rim of one of the openings.

[0029] In particular, in cases where the touch protection sleeve itself has insufficient or no shielding, the touch protection sleeve can be adapted to attach at least one shielding sleeve to its outer surface. For example, the outer surface of the touch protection sleeve may be at least partially complementary to the inner surface of the shielding sleeve. The shielding sleeve can be made of metal or another conductive material. Such a shielding sleeve used with the touch protection sleeve can have a lower material thickness than a conventional shield used without the touch protection sleeve. It is also possible to reduce the level of complexity further. For example, certain elements present in the touch protection sleeve, such as attachments, do not need to be present in such a shielding sleeve. Thus, the manufacture of such a shielding sleeve can be made easier.

[0030] To limit the relative movement between the touch protection sleeve and the shield sleeve, the touch protection sleeve may comprise at least one shield engagement portion adapted to engage with the shield sleeve. The shield engagement portion may comprise at least one blocking surface for blocking movement of the shield sleeve relative to the touch protection sleeve. In particular, movement along the plug-in direction and / or against the plug-in direction may be blocked or limited, and / or movement in at least one circumferential direction perpendicular to the plug-in direction may be blocked or limited.

[0031] The shield engagement portion may comprise a radially extending ledge or a radially disposed recess on the pin, and the shield sleeve may comprise a corresponding opposing element that engages the ledge or recess to define at least one opposing block surface.

[0032] The touch protection sleeve may include at least two shield engagement portions located at different depths and / or rotational positions. This may help increase the number of places where the two sleeves engage with each other. The depth may be measured along the plug-in direction and / or the axial direction of the pin.

[0033] In material-saving embodiments, the wall that forms at least one shield-engaging portion also forms the terminal locking assurance portion. The wall may have a thickness at least as thick as the surrounding wall to ensure mechanical stability. Furthermore, the wall and surrounding wall are preferably continuous (i.e., no holes or gaps through the wall) to eliminate undesirable current paths in this area.

[0034] According to one space-saving embodiment, at least one terminal locking assurance portion is located at the same depth and rotational position as the shield engagement portion, although the two may be located at different radii.

[0035] To further reduce the space required, the touch protection sleeve can include at least one wall portion with increased wall thickness, the wall portion forming an outwardly projecting ledge with a block surface of the shield engagement portion, the wall portion being a base portion for at least one mounting portion. In some of the other developments, such portions have a dual function.

[0036] In an advantageous embodiment, the touch protection sleeve is a monolithic component, i.e., a single, integral part.

[0037] For ease of installation, the touch protection sleeve has at least two-fold rotational symmetry.

[0038] The base of the touch protection sleeve may be tubular, preferably cylindrical, to provide good mechanical stability.

[0039] The base portion may form a receptacle for the pin. The receptacle may be tubular or have a channel-like shape that is open at both ends.

[0040] The present invention also includes a sleeve assembly having a touch protection sleeve according to the present invention and a conductive shielding sleeve attached around the touch protection sleeve.

[0041] The shielding sleeve, especially if made from a conductive material and is part of a touch-protection assembly, should be connected to earth or ground potential in use so that the user cannot come into contact with high voltages.

[0042] Furthermore, the present invention also relates to an HV header having at least one pin protruding from a base plate, the HV header comprising at least one touch protection sleeve according to the present invention attached to the base plate.

[0043] Finally, in order to mount an element suitable for a particular application, a set is provided that allows mounting either a conventional shield or a touch protection sleeve according to the invention, and thus comprises at least one touch protection sleeve according to the invention and at least one metal shield, which can be selectively and interchangeably mounted around the same pin of a header and / or connected to each other with the same mating connector. In particular, the metal shield can be a metal shield according to a conventional solution.

[0044] The set may further comprise additional components of the header, such as a base plate, a housing component, and / or a seal.

[0045] The invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with the aid of advantageous embodiments and with reference to the drawings, which are merely possible configurations in which the individual features mentioned above can be provided independently of one another or can be omitted. [Diagram 5] FIG. 2 is a schematic perspective view of the header of FIG. 1 during assembly. [Figure 6] 1 is a schematic cross-sectional view of a header with two touch protection sleeves shown with a mating connector. [Figure 7] 7 shows a further cross-sectional detail of the header of FIG. 6 taken in a plane at 90° to the plane of FIG. 6. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0047] 1-7 show an embodiment of a touch protection sleeve 20. In some figures, the touch protection sleeve is attached to the remainder of the header 100. Additionally, some figures show the touch protection sleeve 20 with a shield sleeve 80 attached thereabout.

[0048] The touch protection sleeve 20 may be used to replace conventional sleeves made entirely of metal, especially when no or little electromagnetic shielding is required for the application. The touch protection sleeve 20 is typically formed from a plastic material by injection molding, which is more cost-effective than manufacturing a sleeve made entirely of metal.

[0049] The header 100 comprises a base plate 120 which can be mounted and fixed to a housing of a device, for example by inserting suitable fastening elements, such as screws, into holes 140. On the front side, two pins 110 protrude away from the base plate 120 along a plug-in direction P, which is the direction in which the header 100 is connected to a mating connector 200 (see, for example, FIG. 6). In this example, the plug-in direction P is parallel to an axial direction A of the substantially cylindrical pins 110.

[0050] The pin 110 extends through the base plate 120 and projects therefrom from a proximal end 111 to a distal end 119. A touch-protective cap 130 formed from an insulating material is disposed on the distal end 119. The pin body 115 of the pin 110 is formed from a metallic material having good conductive properties, such as copper or aluminum.

[0051] The header 100 with the touch protection sleeve 20 attached is one example of an application. The touch protection sleeve 20 can also be used with other connectors where the pins 110 protrude from the base plate 120.

[0052] Each touch protection sleeve 20 comprises a base portion 21 (configured in Figs. 2 and 3 as a generally cylindrical base portion 21, 22). The base portion 21 forms a receptacle 25 for the pin 110 and a corresponding terminal 210 (or contact element) of the mating connector 200. When fully installed, the pin 110 is surrounded by the terminal 210 of the mating connector 200, which is in turn surrounded by the base portion 21. In an uninstalled state or condition, the base portion 21 surrounds the pin in a spaced, high voltage touch-protective manner. The latter is achieved by, among other things, spacing the pin 110 and the base portion 21 such that a test finger cannot advance far enough within the receptacle 25 to approach or contact the pin body 115 of the pin 110, which may be carrying high voltage electricity.

[0053] From each base portion 21, a mounting portion 30 projects opposite to the plug-in direction P and outwardly in a radial direction R perpendicular to the axial direction A and to the plug-in direction P. The mounting portions 30 are evenly spaced along the circumferential direction C of the touch protection sleeve 20, i.e. at 90° angles to each other if there are four mounting portions 30.

[0054] Each mounting part 30 comprises two prongs or arms 33 which can be elastically deflected towards each other along a circumferential direction C. By pressing the two arms 33 together, their width is reduced so that the mounting part 30 can be inserted into a corresponding hole in the base plate 120. When the mounting part 30 is correctly inserted, a locking projection 34 arranged at the free end of the arms 33 can engage with a corresponding element of the base plate.

[0055] The mounting portion 30 is disposed in a first opening 40, 41 in the touch protection sleeve 20 associated with the proximal end 111 of the pin 110 and the base plate 120. The walls 39 at the openings 40, 41 have an increased wall thickness for improved stability and act as a base 31 for the mounting portion 30.

[0056] During installation, the first openings 40, 41 are covered by the base plate 120. The first openings 40, 41 are configured to make sealing contact with corresponding portions of the base plate 120 to increase clearance and creepage distances.

[0057] To facilitate correct orientation, each touch protection sleeve 20 has a polarization feature 50 that mates with a corresponding feature on the base plate 120 and allows attachment of the touch protection sleeve 20 to the base plate 120 in only one or more allowed rotational positions about the axis 113 of the pin 110. The attachment portion 30 may also function as a polarization feature.

[0058] The pin 110 and the touch protection sleeve 20 are not connected directly, but only via the intermediate base plate 120. This ensures that they are electrically isolated from each other, for example if the touch protection sleeve 20 is made of a conductive material or if a shielding sleeve 80 is attached.

[0059] The touch protection sleeve 20, particularly the base portion 21 and the receptacle 25, form second openings 40, 42 located opposite the first openings 40, 41. The second openings 40, 42 are open when the touch protection sleeve is installed, ensuring that the terminals 210 of the mating connector 200 have access to the conductive portions of the pins 110. In the installed state, the second openings 40, 42 are open and are the only openings providing access to the pins 110. This improves high voltage performance by requiring that the spatial or creepage path from one pin 100 to the other pin 110 must pass through the second openings 40, 42, which is longer than in the case of a direct connection (which is blocked by the wall of the base portion 21). To maximize the path length, the second openings 40, 42 are located entirely in a half-space 47 defined by a plane 48 extending perpendicular to the axial direction A of the pin 110 at a distance 114 approximately equal to the length 116 of the pin 110. The distance 114 and length 116 are measured from where the pin 110 exits the base plate 120 along the axial direction A, including the touch protection cap 130 (see particularly FIG. 7 ).

[0060] Each touch protection sleeve 20 comprises several terminal lock assurance parts 60, 61, 62 adapted to block the movement of the terminal lock 220 of the mating connector 200 out of the locked position 225. Each terminal lock 220 is used to ensure that the terminal 210 is in the correct position of the mating connector 200. The terminal lock 220 can be locked into the corresponding recess of the terminal 210 only when the terminal lock 220 and the terminal 210 are in the correct positional relationship with each other. Each of the terminal lock assurance parts 60, 61, 62 is automatically moved behind the corresponding terminal lock 220 when the header 100 and the mating connector 200 are connected to each other. In this connected state, the terminal lock assurance parts 60, 61, 62 form a stop for the end of the locking arm of the terminal lock 220.

[0061] The terminal lock assurance parts 60, 61, 62 may be grouped into a first terminal lock assurance part 60, 61 arranged at a first depth 66 measured along the insertion direction P and a second terminal lock assurance part 60, 62 arranged at a second depth 67 different from the first depth 66.

[0062] Each group of terminal lock assurance parts 60, 61, 62 comprises two terminal lock assurance parts 60, 61, 62 arranged in different rotational positions around the axis of the pin 110, ie opposite each other, or in other words at an angle of 180° to each other.

[0063] The second terminal locking assurance parts 60, 62 are formed as thickened edges 44 of the opening 42. This may facilitate the manufacture of the tubular or canal-like base part 21 and improve the mechanical stability. Again, the group of second terminal locking assurance parts 60, 62 comprises two terminal locking assurance parts 60, 62 arranged rotated 180 degrees relative to each other around the axis 113 of the pin 110. However, the second terminal locking assurance parts 60, 62 are offset by 90 degrees with respect to the first terminal locking assurance parts 60, 61 in order to ensure good force distribution along the circumferential direction.

[0064] The terminals 210 of the mating connector 200 are connected to electric wires or cables 230 .

[0065] As mentioned above, if the application does not require significant shielding effect, the touch protection sleeve 20 can be used alone instead of using a metallic shield. However, the touch protection sleeve 20 is part of a modular system that allows the addition of shield sleeves 80. The touch protection sleeve 20 is adapted to attach at least one shield sleeve 80 to its outer surface, for example by sliding the touch protection sleeve 20 onto the shield sleeve 80 along the plug-in direction P. To achieve a good fit, the outer surface of the touch protection sleeve 20 is substantially or for the most part complementary to the inner surface of the shield sleeve 80.

[0066] The shielding sleeve 80 may be formed from sheet metal by cutting and bending. In the installed condition, the shielding sleeve 80 is preferably connected to earth or ground potential to avoid electrical shock to the user.

[0067] In order to improve the mechanical connection between the touch protection sleeve 20 and the shield sleeve 80 forming the sleeve assembly 90, the touch protection sleeve 20 is provided with several shield engagement portions 70, 71, 72, 73 adapted to engage with the shield sleeve 80, and the shield sleeve 80 is provided with a corresponding engagement portion 81.

[0068] Each shield engagement portion 70, 71, 72, 73 comprises at least one blocking surface 35 for blocking movement of the shield sleeve 80 relative to the touch protection sleeve 20. In the example shown in Figures 2 to 4, rotation along two opposing rotational directions as well as translation along and against the plug-in direction are blocked.

[0069] In the touch protection sleeve 20, the first shield engaging portion 70, 71 and the second shield engaging portion 70, 72 are formed as a generally rectangular or box-shaped recess having three side walls extending perpendicular to the outer surface and functioning as a block face 75, and a fourth side wall that is inclined or sloped.

[0070] Each of the shield-engaging portions 70, 71, 72, 73 and the terminal lock assurance portions 60, 61, 62 is configured with a continuous wall, i.e., there are no gaps or holes in the walls of the touch protection sleeve 20.

[0071] The engagement portions 81 of the shielding sleeve 80 are embodied as tabs or flaps which can be elastically deflected in the outward direction during insertion of the touch protection sleeve 20 and which in the final position lock into the shielding engagement portions 70, 71, 72. The front surface, located at the free end of the tab, and the side surface serve as opposing block faces 85. The edge of the opening of the shielding sleeve 80 serves as a further block face 85.

[0072] For simplicity of design, the wall 69 of the touch protection sleeve 20 functions as the shield-engaging portions 70, 71 and also functions as the terminal lock assurance portions 60, 61. In other words, the terminal lock assurance portions 60, 61 are located at the same depth and rotational position as the shield-engaging portions 70, 71, but at a different radius.

[0073] Like the terminal lock assurance portions 60, 61, 62, the shield engagement portions 70, 71, 72, 73 are located at different depths and different rotational positions.

[0074] The wall portion 39 of increased wall thickness forms an outwardly projecting ledge having a blocking surface 75 against the shield sleeve 80 and thus functions as a third shield engaging portion 70 , 73 .

[0075] The entire touch protection sleeve 20 is a single or monolithic piece and is formed from an injection moldable material.

[0076] For ease of installation, the embodiment of the touch protection sleeve 20 shown in Figures 1-7 has two-fold rotational symmetry.

[0077] A set allowing the mounting of either a conventional shield or a touch protection sleeve according to the invention comprises at least one touch protection sleeve 20 and at least one metal shield, the touch protection sleeve 20 and the metal shield being selectively and interchangeably mountable around the same pin 110 of the header 100. In particular, the metal shield can be a metal shield according to a conventional solution.

[0078] The set may further comprise additional components of the header 100, such as the base plate 110, housing components, and / or seals. [Explanation of symbols]
