Description

[Technical field]

[0001] This application claims the benefit of priority based on Korean Patent Application No. 10-2022-0113985 filed on September 8, 2022, and all contents disclosed in the documents of said Korean patent application are incorporated herein by reference.

[0002] The present invention relates to a pouch-type battery cell and a battery module including the same, and more particularly to a pouch-type battery cell and a battery module including the same that can contribute to extending the battery life by preventing or delaying gas venting. [Background technology]

[0003] Today, the demand for secondary batteries that can store electrical energy produced by the development of alternative energy sources is increasing due to air pollution and energy depletion caused by the use of fossil fuels. Rechargeable secondary batteries are used in mobile devices, electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, and other applications in everyday life.

[0004] Secondary batteries are used as energy sources for various electronic devices that are essential in modern society, and the required capacity is increasing due to the increased use and complication of mobile devices and the development of electric vehicles, etc. To meet user demand, many battery cells are arranged in small devices, while automobiles and the like use battery modules that electrically connect many battery cells or battery packs equipped with many such battery modules.

[0005] On the other hand, a pouch-type battery cell is made by preparing a lower case and an upper case using a laminate sheet including an inner resin layer, a metal layer, and an outer resin layer, and then joining the cases together by heat fusing them while facing each other.

[0006] However, pouch-type battery cells can suffer from a swelling phenomenon in which gas is generated during use at high temperatures or during the charging and discharging process, causing the case to swell (see Figure 1).In this case, the heat-sealed area separates, causing the electrolyte inside the case to leak out, increasing the risk of fire and shortening the lifespan of the battery cell. [0025] Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which a person having ordinary skill in the art to which the present invention pertains can easily carry out the present invention. However, when describing the operation principle of the preferred embodiment of the present invention in detail, detailed description of related well-known functions or configurations will be omitted if it is determined that such detailed description may unnecessarily obscure the gist of the present invention.

[0026] In addition, the same reference numerals are used throughout the drawings for parts having similar functions and actions. Throughout the specification, when a part is said to be connected to another part, this includes not only the case where the part is directly connected to another part, but also the case where the part is indirectly connected via another element between the two parts. In addition, unless otherwise specified, the term "including a certain component" does not mean to exclude other components, but means that the part may further include other components.

[0027] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Hereinafter, a pouch-type battery cell and a battery module including the same according to the present invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0028] FIG. 2 is an exploded perspective view of a pouch-type battery cell according to a first preferred embodiment of the present invention, FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the pouch-type battery cell according to the first preferred embodiment of the present invention in a sealed state, and FIG. 4 is a plan view of the pouch-type battery cell shown in FIG. 3.

[0029] 5 is a perspective view of a pouch-type battery cell according to a first preferred embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken along line BB' of the pouch-type battery cell of FIG.

[0030] As shown in FIGS. 2 to 6, a pouch-type battery cell according to the present invention can include a pouch case 100, an electrode assembly 200, an electrode lead 300, a protective tape 400, a lead film 500, and a fixing member 600.

[0031] First, the pouch case 100 may include a lower case 110 and an upper case 120, and has a pocket-shaped receiving space S formed therein to receive the electrode assembly 200 therein.

[0032] Such a pouch case 100 uses a laminate sheet including an outer resin layer, a metal layer, and an inner resin layer.

[0033] In detail, the lower case 110 may include a first inner resin layer 111 located on the innermost side, a first metal layer 112 located in the middle, and a first outer resin layer 113 located on the outermost side.

[0034] In the case of the upper case 120 as well, the second inner resin layer 121 is located on the innermost side, the second metal layer 122 is located in the middle, and the second outer resin layer 123 is located on the outermost side.

[0035] The first outer resin layer 113 and the second outer resin layer 123 located on the outer periphery of the pouch case 100 may use a heat-resistant polymer having excellent tensile strength, moisture permeability, and air permeability so as to ensure heat resistance and chemical resistance while protecting the electrode assembly 200. As an example, nylon or polyethylene terephthalate may be used, but is not limited thereto.

[0036] The metal layer in contact with the external resin layer, i.e., the first metal layer 112 and the second metal layer 122 located in the center of the pouch case 100, correspond to a barrier layer that prevents moisture and various gases from penetrating into the interior of the battery, and a preferred material for such a metal layer is a thin aluminum film, which is lightweight yet has excellent formability.

[0037] In addition, the first inner resin layer 111 and the second inner resin layer 121 located at the innermost side of the pouch case 100 are in direct contact with the electrode assembly 200, and therefore must have insulating properties and electrolysis resistance. In addition, in order to seal against the outside, the sealing properties, i.e., the sealing portions where the inner layers are thermally bonded together, must have excellent thermal adhesion strength.

[0038] The material of the first inner resin layer 111 and the second inner resin layer 121 may be selected from polyolefin resins such as polypropylene, polyethylene, polyethylene acrylic acid, and polybutylene, which have excellent chemical resistance and sealing properties, polyurethane resins, and polyimide resins, but is not limited thereto. Polypropylene, which has excellent mechanical properties such as tensile strength, rigidity, surface hardness, and impact strength, and excellent chemical resistance, is most preferable.

[0039] Although FIGS. 2 and 3 show storage spaces provided in both the lower case 110 and the upper case 120, it is apparent that the storage space may be provided in only one of these cases.

[0040] Meanwhile, a heat-sealed sealing portion 130 is provided along the edges where the lower case 110 and the upper case 120 face each other to prevent moisture, air, etc. from entering the receiving space S of the lower case 110 and the upper case 120.

[0041] It is preferable that such sealing portion 130 includes a wing portion 131 located along the entire length direction (X-axis direction) of pouch case 100, a terrace portion 132 located along the entire width direction (Y-axis direction) of pouch case 100, and a reinforcing portion 133 extending from terrace portion 132.

[0042] The reinforcing portion 133 serves to extend the life of the battery cell by suppressing or delaying gas venting generated inside the pouch case 100, and is located alongside the electrode leads.

[0043] In detail, it is preferable that they are provided on each of a pair of terrace portions 132 positioned opposite each other, more preferably on one side edge spaced a predetermined distance from the electrode lead 300, and most preferably on the edge of the terrace portion 132 positioned adjacent to the wing portion 131.

[0044] To explain further, as shown in FIG. 4, L1 defines the length of the wing portion and L2 defines the length of the terrace portion, and when it is assumed that wing portion 131 is bent along line A-A', terrace portion 132 is positioned so as not to overlap line A-A' so that terrace portion 132 is not bent together with wing portion 131.

[0045] Here, the shape and area of the reinforcing part 133 are not particularly limited, but may be trapezoidal so as to increase the sealing force of the terrace part 132 while reducing the area. Here, it is preferable that the long side is connected to the terrace part 132, and more preferably, when the reinforcing part 133 is folded toward the side in the overall width direction of the pouch case 100, it has a height that does not protrude above the upper case.

[0046] When applied to an actual environment, in a pouch-type battery cell, the area where stress caused by gas generation is concentrated and the sealing is likely to break is the terrace portion 132 from which the electrode lead 300 protrudes, and in particular, the edge portion spaced a certain distance from the electrode lead 300 is the most vulnerable.

[0047] More specifically, the width W1 of the wing that constitutes the sealing part of the pouch-type battery cell is relatively longer than the width W2 of the terrace part, and since it is fixed in a state where it is bent toward the side in the length direction, it is possible to maintain a high sealing force. However, the terrace part 132 cannot be bent because the electrode lead is located there, and there are also disadvantages in that if the width W2 of the terrace part is increased to increase the sealing force, the energy density decreases.

[0048] Of course, the width W2 of the terrace portion near the electrode lead 300 is also short, but since the lead portion is supported or fixed by a general structure of a module in which a pouch-type battery cell is used, the structure makes it difficult for gas to vent near the electrode lead 300.

[0049] However, when a reinforcing portion is provided on one side edge of the terrace portion separated from the electrode lead 300 as in the present invention, the sealing force of the terrace portion can be increased, and as a result, gas venting can be suppressed or delayed, thereby extending the life of the battery cell.

[0050] In particular, when the reinforcing portion 133 is folded toward the side surface in the overall width direction of the pouch case 100 and then the folded state is maintained using a fixing member 600 (to be described later), the sealing force is further improved.

[0051] Next, the electrode assembly 200 will be described. The electrode assembly 200 seated in the storage space of the pouch case 100 can be composed of, but not limited to, a jelly roll type electrode assembly having a structure in which a separator is interposed between a long sheet-like negative electrode and a positive electrode and then wound, a stack type electrode assembly composed of unit cells having a structure in which a rectangular positive electrode and a negative electrode are laminated with a separator interposed therebetween, a stack folding type electrode assembly in which unit cells are wound by a long separation film, or a lamination stack type electrode assembly in which unit cells are laminated with a separator interposed therebetween and adhered to each other.

[0052] Specifically, the negative electrode is manufactured by applying a slurry in which a negative electrode active material and a binder are mixed to a negative electrode current collector.

[0053] Here, as the negative electrode active material, for example, carbon such as graphitizable carbon and graphite-based carbon; Li x Fe2O3 (0 ≦ x ≦ 1), Li x WO2 (0 ≦ x ≦ 1), Sn x Me 1-x Me’ y O z (Me: Mn, Fe, Pb, Ge; Me’: Al, B, P, Si, Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 elements of the periodic table, halogen; 0 < x ≦ 1; 1 ≦ y ≦ 3; 1 ≦ z ≦ 8) and other metal composite oxides; lithium metal; lithium alloy; silicon-based alloy; tin-based alloy; metal oxides such as SnO, SnO2, PbO, PbO2, Pb2O3, Pb3O4, Sb2O3, Sb2O4, Sb2O5, GeO, GeO2, Bi2O3, Bi2O4, Bi2O5; conductive polymers such as polyacetylene; Li-Co-Ni-based materials; Si-based materials that are Si, SiO, SiO2 alone or mixtures thereof can be used, but are not limited thereto.

[0054] The positive electrode is manufactured by applying a slurry in which a positive electrode active material and a binder are mixed to a positive electrode current collector.

[0055] The positive electrode active material is a layered compound such as lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2), lithium nickel oxide (LiNiO2), or a compound substituted with one or more transition metals; 1+x Mn 2-x Lithium manganese oxides such as LiMnO4 (where x is 0 to 0.33), LiMnO3, LiMn2O3, and LiMnO2; lithium copper oxide (Li2CuO2); vanadium oxides such as LiV3O8, V2O5, and Cu2V2O7; and the chemical formula LiNi 1-x M x O2 (where M=Co, Mn, Al, Cu, Fe, Mg, B or Ga, and x=0.01-0.3); 2-x M x Examples of the lithium manganese composite oxides include, but are not limited to, lithium manganese oxides represented by the formula LiMn2O2 (wherein M is Co, Ni, Fe, Cr, Zn, or Ta, and x is 0.01 to 0.1) or Li2Mn3MO8 (wherein M is Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, or Zn); LiMn2O4 in which part of the Li in the chemical formula is replaced with an alkaline earth metal ion; disulfide compounds; and Fe2(MoO4)3.

[0056] Meanwhile, the negative electrode current collector and the positive electrode current collector include a portion coated with a slurry containing an active material and an uncoated portion where the slurry is not coated, and the uncoated portion is cut or a separate conductive member is connected to the uncoated portion by ultrasonic welding or the like to form a pair of electrode tabs, i.e., a positive electrode tab 210 and a negative electrode tab 220.

[0057] A pair of electrode leads 300 including a positive electrode lead 310 and a negative electrode lead 320 are electrically connected to the positive electrode tab 210 and the negative electrode tab 220, respectively, and then exposed to the outside of the pouch case 100.

[0058] Here, the pair of electrode tabs and electrode lead 400 can be electrically connected to each other by welding, more specifically, ultrasonic welding. The ultrasonic welding is performed by applying high-frequency vibrations generated by ultrasonic waves of about 20 kHz to the interface between the electrode tabs and electrode lead, and the vibration energy is converted into heat energy by friction due to the operation of a horn and anvil, which rapidly welds the interface between the electrode tabs and electrode lead.

[0059] Next, a description will be given of the protective tape 400. The protective tape 400 is placed so as to cover the portions where the electrode tabs and the electrode leads 300 overlap each other, i.e., the welded portions thereof.

[0060] Since the electrode tab and the electrode lead 300 are connected by welding, the surfaces of the electrode tab and the electrode lead 300 may not be smooth, which may lead to insulation failure.

[0061] In detail, if the surface of the welded portion is not smooth, the internal resin layer peels off and the metal layer is exposed when the welded portion comes into contact with the pouch case 100 due to an impact, resulting in insulation failure. Therefore, it is preferable to wrap the welded portion using a protective tape 400 to prevent the above-mentioned insulation failure from occurring.

[0062] Here, the protective tape 400 may be made of an insulating material, such as polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, or polyimide, but is not limited thereto, as long as the material can encase the welded portion and maintain an insulating state when in contact with the pouch case 100.

[0063] The lead film 500 including the first lead film 510 and the second lead film 520 is spaced a certain distance from the protective tape 400 and is located at a sealing portion 130 where the upper case 120 and the lower case 110 of the pouch case 100 are heat-sealed to fix the electrode lead 300 to the pouch case 100. Therefore, the sealing of the pouch case 100 is maintained while preventing electricity generated from the electrode assembly 200 from flowing to the pouch case 100 via the electrode lead 300.

[0064] The lead film 500 is preferably made of a non-conductive material that does not easily pass electricity. Generally, an insulating tape that is easy to attach to the electrode lead 300 and has a relatively thin thickness is used, but the material is not limited to this.

[0065] Specifically, the lead film 500 may be one or more materials selected from the group consisting of polyimide (PI), polyprophylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), high density polyethylene (HDPE), and epoxy resin, and is thermally fused and bonded to the inner resin layer of the pouch case by heat and pressure.

[0066] Next, the fixing member 600 will be described. As described above, the fixing member 600 is a component for fixing the reinforcing portion. Specifically, the fixing member 600 is a strip-shaped tape with adhesive applied to one surface, and is positioned so as to have a shape that wraps the reinforcing portion 133. That is, one end is fixed to the lower case 110, and the other end is fixed to the upper case 120, so that the reinforcing portion 133 can be maintained in a folded state.

[0067] FIG. 7 is a perspective view of a pouch-type battery cell according to a second preferred embodiment of the present invention in a sealed state, FIG. 8 is a plan view of the pouch-type battery cell shown in FIG. 7, and FIG. 9 is a perspective view of the pouch-type battery cell according to the second preferred embodiment of the present invention.

[0068] Since the structure is the same as the first preferred embodiment of the present invention except for the reinforcing portion, only the reinforcing portion will be described below.

[0069] The reinforcing portions according to the second embodiment are located on a pair of opposing terrace portions 132 and are provided near both side edges of each terrace portion 132, that is, on both sides with the electrode lead 300 sandwiched therebetween.

[0070] Next, a method for manufacturing a pouch-type battery cell according to the present invention will be described below. Fig. 10 is a flow chart for explaining the method for manufacturing a pouch-type battery cell according to the present invention.

[0071] Referring to FIG. 10, a method for manufacturing a pouch-type battery cell of the present invention may include a first step of cutting a laminate sheet including an internal resin layer, a metal layer, and an external resin layer into a predetermined shape and size; a second step of preparing a pouch case by forming a pair of storage spaces that face each other when the cut laminate sheet is folded; a third step of accommodating an electrode assembly in the storage space of the pouch case; and a fourth step of folding the pouch case and then heat-sealing edges of the storage spaces to form a sealing portion.

[0072] It is clear that the laminate sheet must be cut in such a way that the reinforcing portion can be formed in the first step. That is, the sealing portion is formed by the heat sealing process in the fourth step. Here, the sealing portion includes the wing portion located along the entire length of the pouch case, the terrace portion located along the entire width of the pouch case, and the reinforcing portion extending outward from the terrace portion.

[0073] In the second stage, after heat fusion, a storage space is formed so that the width of the wing portion is larger than the width of the terrace portion.

[0074] Meanwhile, after the fourth step, the method may further include a step of folding the wing portion toward a side surface in the full length direction of the pouch case, and a step of folding the reinforcing portion toward a side surface in the full width direction of the pouch case, where these steps may be performed simultaneously.

[0075] In addition, after folding the reinforcing portion, it is preferable to further perform a step of fixing an outer surface of the reinforcing portion and an outer surface of the pouch case with tape so that the reinforcing portion maintains the folded state.

[0076] The present invention may be a battery module including the above-mentioned pouch-type battery cell, or a battery pack including the battery module.

[0077] Those skilled in the art will appreciate that various applications and modifications within the scope of the present invention will be possible based on the above content. [Explanation of symbols]
