The human nasal cavity contains approximately 400 olfactory receptors. Each olfactory receptor is activated by recognizing a specific odorant as an agonist, stimulating the olfactory nerve and transmitting odor information to the brain. However, odors distinct from the specific odors recognized by the agonist may also activate olfactory receptors.
