Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present invention relates to a cosmetic composition comprising oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (rice) starch) and a natural organic thickener for stabilizing a cosmetic composition, and the use of a combination of oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (rice) starch) and a natural organic thickener.
Background Art
[0002] Cosmetic compositions are present everywhere in modern life. Cosmetic compositions cover leave-on and rinse-off products, such as skin and body care including daily care compositions and sunscreens, hair care, such as shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, makeup, and many other products. Requirements for such cosmetic compositions are constantly increasing, regardless of those related to performance, sustainability, or cost. In particular, the sustainability of cosmetic compositions has become even more relevant to consumers and regulatory authorities.
[0003] In this regard, generally, the use of microplastics and synthetic polymers in cosmetic compositions is increasingly under scrutiny. There is a growing demand from consumers for cosmetics that generally do not contain microplastics and further do not contain synthetic polymers in general. Therefore, cosmetic compositions free of microplastics and synthetic polymers are generally desired.
[0004] Another important aspect of sustainability is the procurement of materials. In this regard, bio-based materials are becoming increasingly desirable. In contrast to materials derived from fossil resources, such as synthetic polymers, bio-based materials have a substantially smaller carbon footprint. Unfortunately, these materials often do not provide the same performance as conventional materials derived from fossil resources.
[0005] A key requirement for cosmetic compositions is the stability of the formulation, especially over longer storage periods. This is particularly challenging for sunscreens, as such compositions typically contain a large number of different components, including, for example, liquid or solid water-soluble or oil-soluble UV filters, particulate UV filters, solubilizers, emulsifiers, etc. Sunscreens generally contain high oil loads, which affect the physical (macroscopic) stability of the formulation and make it difficult to obtain high-viscosity compositions. Sunscreens are also used in extreme temperature conditions, i.e., hot summers or cold winters, which presents further challenges for the stability of sunscreen products.
[0006] These factors can contribute to the separation of components or phases within a cosmetic composition, resulting in a heterogeneous composition. This process can occur rapidly within a few days or slowly over several weeks or months. However, the formation of a heterogeneous and unstable composition can significantly affect the appearance and sensory characteristics of the product, or even adversely impact the performance of personal care products. For example, a heterogeneous and unstable sunscreen composition may no longer provide the expected and anticipated protection from UV radiation.
[0007] Therefore, there remains a need to develop sustainable cosmetic compositions that are free of microplastics and possess good medium- to long-term stability. [Overview of the Initiative] [Problems that the invention aims to solve]
[0008] Therefore, an object of the present invention is to provide a cosmetic composition containing bio-based materials.
[0009] Furthermore, an object of the present invention is to provide sustainable cosmetic compositions derived from bio-based materials.
[0010] Furthermore, an object of the present invention is to provide a cosmetic composition that does not contain microplastics and / or synthetic polymer materials.
[0011] Another object of the present invention is to provide a cosmetic composition with high macroscopic stability and long-term storage stability.
[0012] A further object of the present invention is to provide high-viscosity cosmetic compositions suitable for different personal care applications. [Means for solving the problem]
[0013] According to a first aspect, the present invention relates to a cosmetic composition comprising oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) and at least one natural organic thickener, wherein the cosmetic composition comprises less than 0.1% by weight of synthetic polymer material based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition, and the cosmetic composition comprises at least one organic or inorganic UV filter. It has been found that at least one of the objectives of the present invention can be achieved by such a cosmetic composition.
[0014] During a comprehensive investigation of viable bio-based materials for application to cosmetic compositions, such as daily care compositions with or without sunscreen or UV protection, we surprisingly discovered that Oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (rice) starch), a specific type of starch derived from rice, significantly increases the stability of cosmetic compositions when combined with at least one natural organic thickener. Interestingly, neither rice starch alone nor natural organic thickeners alone can provide sufficient stability to cosmetic compositions. However, combining these two bio-based materials makes it possible to provide high-viscosity cosmetic compositions that maintain stability for weeks and months. When using these two bio-based materials in combination, no further synthetic polymer thickeners, synthetic polymer binders, synthetic polymer water-retaining agents, or any other type of synthetic polymer material are required to obtain cosmetic compositions with excellent viscosity properties. This also applies to sunscreen compositions, especially those with complex ingredient compositions and high oil loads.
[0015] While not bound by any specific scientific theory, the interaction between oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) and at least one natural organic thickener is thought to provide a stable and persistent structure to the formulation. The viscosity of the composition remains stable even during long storage periods.
[0016] A second aspect of the present invention relates to the use of a combination of oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) and at least one natural organic thickener to stabilize a cosmetic composition, wherein the cosmetic composition contains less than 0.1% by weight of synthetic polymer material based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition, and the cosmetic composition contains at least one organic or inorganic UV filter. As described with respect to the first aspect of the present invention, it has been surprisingly discovered that the combination of oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) and a natural organic thickener effectively stabilizes the cosmetic composition. These two components provide the structural integrity required for different types of cosmetic compositions and provide long-term stability to these cosmetic compositions.
[0017] A third aspect of the present invention relates to the use of a combination of oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) and at least one natural organic thickener to increase the viscosity of a cosmetic composition, wherein the cosmetic composition contains less than 0.1% by weight of synthetic polymer material based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition, and the cosmetic composition contains at least one organic or inorganic UV filter.
[0018] A fourth aspect of the present invention relates to a method for preparing a cosmetic composition by mixing oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch), at least one natural organic thickener, and other components of the cosmetic composition, wherein the cosmetic composition contains less than 0.1% by weight of synthetic polymer material based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition, and the cosmetic composition contains at least one organic or inorganic UV filter.

A daily care composition may contain one or more activators, e.g., organic and / or inorganic UV filters, as well as other components or additives, e.g., emulsifiers, emollients, viscosity modifiers, stabilizers, preservatives, or fragrances. A suitable daily care composition according to the present invention is, for example, a leave-on face and body care product.
[0038] Leave-on products suitable for the face and body include, for example, sunscreens and skincare products.
[0039] Suitable skincare formulations include, for example, moisturizing formulations, anti-aging formulations, refining formulations, and lifting formulations. The leave-on compositions listed herein may be in the form of creams, ointments, pastes, foams, gels, lotions, powders, makeup cosmetics, sprays, sticks, or aerosols. Daily care compositions with UV protection protect human skin from damage caused by UV light.
[0040] As used herein, the terms “UV filter” or “ultraviolet filter” refer to organic or inorganic compounds that can absorb, reflect, and scatter ultraviolet radiation produced by sunlight. UV filters can be classified as UV-A, UV-B, or broadband filters based on their UV absorbance profiles. Preferably, the term “UV filter” includes or consists of any UV filter as defined in Annex VI (11.11.2022 edition) of Regulation (EC) No. 1223 / 2009 of the European Parliament and Commission.
[0041] According to the present invention, the term "stabilization of cosmetic composition" is defined as the stabilization of the structural integrity of the cosmetic composition. The stabilization of the structural integrity of the cosmetic composition is preferably determined by visual evaluation over time at different storage temperatures (macroscopic stability), microscopic evaluation, centrifugal analysis, and measurement of viscosity and pH over time, and most preferably by visual evaluation. Visual evaluation is performed by visually determining whether the composition remains homogeneous (e.g., no oil release and no water separation). Centrifugal evaluation can be used as an accelerated stability test. To determine whether the combination of oryza sativa starch and a natural organic thickener results in the stabilization of the cosmetic composition, the stability of the cosmetic composition is evaluated by one of the methods mentioned above, once without the addition of the combination of oryza sativa starch and a natural organic thickener, and once with the addition of the combination of oryza sativa starch and a natural organic thickener. We have discovered that using the present invention's combination of oryza sativa starch and a natural organic thickener results in a more stable cosmetic composition compared to compositions that do not contain this combination.
[0042] The solubility of the water-soluble UV filter in water is at least 2% by weight, preferably at least 3% by weight, and more preferably at least 5% by weight.
[0043] The solubility of the oil-soluble filter in a particular emollient is at least 2% by weight, preferably at least 3% by weight, and more preferably at least 5% by weight.
[0044] The term "emollient" refers to certain cosmetic oils used to protect, moisturize, and smooth the skin. The word "emollient" originates from the Latin word "mollire" (to soften). Generally, emollients prevent moisture evaporation from the skin by forming an occlusive coating. Alternatively, or in addition, emollients improve the distribution of products on the skin. Mollients can be divided into different groups according to their polarity index.
[0045] The term "sensitive skin" refers to skin whose natural barrier function is weakened and compromised by certain triggers. These triggers can include, for example, cold climates, extremely hot water, and potentially harmful ingredients found in sunscreens or daily care compositions.
[0046] As used herein, the term “ultraviolet protection factor (SPF)” indicates how well a sunscreen composition protects the skin from primarily UV-B radiation. Specifically, this factor indicates how much longer protected skin can be exposed to sunlight without sunburn compared to untreated skin. For example, if a sunscreen composition with SPF 15 is applied evenly to the skin of a person who would normally sunburn after 10 minutes in the sun, the sunscreen will allow a person skilled in the art to stay in the sun 15 times longer. In other words, SPF 15 means that, assuming the sunscreen is applied evenly at a thickness of 2 milligrams per square centimeter (mg / cm²), 1 / 15 of the UV radiation that would cause a burn will reach the skin.
[0047] The definition of "broadband" protection (also called broad-spectrum or broad-spectrum protection) may be based on, for example, a "critical wavelength" or UVA-PF. To cover a broadband, UV-B and UV-A protection must be provided. According to US requirements, a critical wavelength of at least 370 nm is required to achieve broad-spectrum protection. Furthermore, the European Commission recommends that all sunscreen or cosmetic composition should have a UV-A protection index of at least one-third of its stated ultraviolet protection factor (SPF). For example, if a sunscreen composition has an SPF of 30, its UVA protection index must be at least 10.
[0048] The term "critical wavelength" is defined as the wavelength at which the area under the UV protection curve (protection rate (%) relative to wavelength) reaches 90% of the total area under the curve in the UV region (290-400 nm). For example, a critical wavelength of 370 nm means that the protection provided by the sunscreen composition is not limited to UV-B wavelengths, i.e., wavelengths of 290-320 nm, but extends up to 370 nm, at which point 90% of the total area under the UV protection curve is reached.
[0049] The term "administration" refers to applying sunscreen or daily care composition to human skin.
[0050] In this invention, the term "rice starch" refers to oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (rice) starch) unless otherwise specified.
[0051] In the context of "natural organic thickeners," the term "natural" refers to components that are entirely, at least partially, preferably entirely, derived from natural resources. Natural resources are any biological or mineral resources provided by nature. In the sense of this invention, natural resources include, among other things, plants, forests, vegetation, surface water and groundwater, fertile land, soil, and minerals. Natural resources within the scope of this invention do not include products derived from fossil resources such as petroleum, natural gas, crude oil, or coal. An alternative term to "natural" in this invention is "bio-based." These terms are meant to be used interchangeably within this invention. When the term "natural" is used in a context other than that of "natural organic thickeners," its meaning is the same as that defined for "natural organic thickeners," unless otherwise stated.
[0052] In the context of "natural organic thickeners," the term "organic" refers to an organic compound or a mixture of organic compounds. An organic compound is one of the broad categories of compounds in which one or more carbon atoms are covalently bonded to other elements, most commonly carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, or nitrogen atoms. Some carbon-containing compounds that are not classified as organic include carbides, carbonates, and cyanides. When the term "organic" is used in a context other than that of "natural organic thickeners," its meaning is the same as that defined for "natural organic thickeners," unless otherwise specified.
[0053] In the context of "natural organic thickeners," the term "thickener" refers to a component that increases the viscosity of a mixture. A thickener can increase the viscosity of a composition, for example, by binding with a liquid present in the composition, particularly water. In some cases, a thickener may gel upon contact with water. In other cases, a thickener may not gel upon contact with water. Those skilled in the art are familiar with typical thickeners and their general properties. The terms "thickener" and "thickening agent" are intended to be interchangeable within this invention. When the term "thickener" is used in a context other than that of "natural organic thickeners," its meaning is the same as that defined for "natural organic thickeners," unless otherwise specified.
[0054] However, the term “synthetic thickener” refers to thickeners as defined above, derived from fossil resources, particularly oils and gases through several reaction and processing steps. Synthetic thickeners are artificially produced by synthesis and processing. Types of synthetic thickeners include synthetic polymers and microplastics with thickening activity. Common synthetic thickeners include homopolymers or polyacrylamides of acrylates or acrylic acid reticulates, such as carbomers, acrylate copolymers, acrylate / C10-C30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymers, acrylate / beheneth-25 methacrylate copolymers, VP / eicosene copolymers, VP / hexadecane copolymers, and triacontanyl PVP. The cosmetic compositions of the present invention preferably do not contain synthetic thickeners.
[0055] In this specification, the term "microplastic" refers to small solid particles manufactured from synthetic polymers. Some synthetic thickeners can be microplastics, and vice versa. Microplastic solid particles are often non-water soluble and preferably have a particle size distribution Dv50 of less than 5 mm. Examples of microplastics used in cosmetic compositions in the art include styrene / PVP or styreneacrylamide copolymers, polyamide derivatives such as nylon 12; polymethyl methacrylate; and polyethylene. Furthermore, it is preferable that the cosmetic compositions of the present invention do not contain microplastics.
[0056] In this specification, the term “synthetic polymer materials” refers to polymer materials derived from fossil resources, particularly oils and gases, through several reaction and processing steps. In this specification, the term “polymer materials” also refers to materials consisting of macromolecules, which are large molecules composed of repeating subunits that chemically bond to form long polymer chains. Polymer materials are obtained by the polymerization of many small molecules known as monomers. Synthetic thickeners and microplastics are part of the “synthetic polymer materials” group.
[0057] Any description made relating to the components, features, or characteristics of a first aspect of the present invention applies equally to other aspects of the present invention. Any description made relating to the components, features, or characteristics of a second aspect of the present invention applies equally to other aspects of the present invention. Any description made relating to the components, features, or characteristics of a third aspect of the present invention applies equally to other aspects of the present invention. Any description made relating to the components, features, or characteristics of a fourth aspect of the present invention applies equally to other aspects of the present invention.
[0058] Specific embodiments of the present invention A first aspect of the present invention relates to a cosmetic composition comprising oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) and at least one natural organic thickener, wherein the cosmetic composition contains less than 0.1% by weight of synthetic polymer material based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition, and the cosmetic composition contains at least one organic or inorganic UV filter. The combination of US starch and at least one natural organic thickener in the cosmetic composition provides stability and structural integrity to the cosmetic composition for several weeks to several months. The combination of oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) and at least one natural organic thickener increases the viscosity of the cosmetic composition, making it possible to use such a composition in many different areas of application within the scope of cosmetics. The combination of these two components yields a substantially better, unexpected synergistic effect than the effect of using either oryza sativa starch or at least one natural organic thickener on its own. In addition, compositions containing oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) and at least one natural organic thickener have a lower carbon footprint and improved sustainability compared to compositions based on conventional stabilization systems based on synthetic thickeners. Cosmetic compositions can also exhibit higher biodegradability than compositions based on components derived purely from fossil resources and do not need to contain synthetic polymers and microplastics.
[0059] In general, a wide range of different types of natural organic thickeners can be used in the present invention. According to preferred embodiments of the present invention, the natural organic thickener is selected from the group consisting of polysaccharides, polypeptides, proteins, and mixtures thereof. Polysaccharides, polypeptides, proteins, and mixtures thereof have been found to be particularly suitable as natural organic thickeners in combination with oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch). In addition, polysaccharides, polypeptides, and proteins are readily found in nature and can be entirely bio-based.
[0060] According to another preferred embodiment of the present invention, the natural organic thickener is a polysaccharide selected from the group consisting of natural gum, pectin, cellulose, chitin, callose, and mixtures thereof. Polysaccharides are readily available in nature, are entirely bio-based, and are effective in binding with water. Natural gum, pectin, cellulose, chitin, callose, and mixtures thereof are polysaccharides commonly found in nature. Furthermore, these polysaccharides exhibit good biodegradability and are particularly compatible with other typical cosmetic ingredients.
[0061] In a particularly preferred embodiment, the natural organic thickener is a natural gum selected from the group consisting of agar, alginic acid / sodium alginate (algin), carrageenan, gum arabic, gum ghati, gum tragacanth, karaya gum, locust bean gum, β-glucan, dammar gum, glucomannan, plantain seed husk, tara gum (Caesalpinia spinosa gum), gellan gum, xanthan gum, and mixtures thereof. Natural gums have been found to be excellent thickeners in combination with oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch). They are readily available and economical.
[0062] The most preferred types of natural organic thickeners are natural rubbers selected from the group consisting of xanthan gum, tara gum (Caesalpinia Spinosa gum), alginic acid / sodium alginate (algin), and mixtures thereof. According to one embodiment of the present invention, the natural organic thickener is xanthan gum. According to another embodiment of the present invention, the natural organic thickener is tara gum. According to another embodiment of the present invention, the natural organic thickener is alginic acid / sodium alginate (algin). Xanthan gum, tara gum, and algin are excellent natural thickeners that, when combined with oryza sativa starch, bind particularly effectively to other components of cosmetic compositions.
[0063] The oryza sativa starch particles used in the present invention may be provided in different forms or shapes. According to one embodiment, the oryza sativa starch particles have a polygonal particle shape. The term "polygonal particle shape" as used herein means that at least 75% of the particles in a sample of oryza sativa starch have three or more vertices or angles, preferably four or more vertices or angles, and more preferably five or more vertices or angles, as identified by electron microscopy. Oryza sativa starch particles (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) with a polygonal particle shape are particularly well-suited for providing excellent structural integrity in cosmetic compositions.
[0064] The oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) used in the present invention may also have different particle size distributions. According to one preferred embodiment, the oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) has a particle size distribution Dv50 measured by static laser scattering of 2 to 10 μm, particularly 6 to 8 μm. Oryza sativa starch having such a Dv50 value has been found to be particularly suitable for providing optimal structural stability in cosmetic compositions.
[0065] The particle size distribution Dv50 of oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) is preferably measured by static laser scattering. In this invention, the Dv50 value was measured using static laser scattering with a Beckman Coulter LS-13 230 particle size analyzer with PIDS and a universal liquid module, using a 2% US starch suspension in deionized water.
[0066] The oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) used in the composition of the present invention has the ability to effectively bind to liquids such as oil. Preferably, the oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) has an oil adsorption capacity of 0.5 to 1.0 g, preferably 0.7 to 0.8 g, of oil per 1.0 g of starch. Due to the oil adsorption capacity of the oryza sativa starch used, the cosmetic composition maintains particularly high viscosity and structural integrity.
[0067] Methods for measuring the oil adsorption capacity of starch are known in the art. The oil adsorption capacity of oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) can be measured by weighing out a sample containing oryza sativa starch, mixing it with excess oil in a weighed centrifuge tube to obtain a dispersion, centrifuging this dispersion to completely remove the supernatant, and then weighing the centrifuge tube containing the starch and the oil absorbed by the starch.
[0068] The amount of oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) in the cosmetic composition of the present invention can be varied over a wide range depending on the relevant cosmetic application. A higher amount of oryza sativa starch may result in a higher viscosity and a more concentrated cosmetic composition, while a lower amount of oryza sativa starch generally results in a lower viscosity composition (equal to all other components). According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the amount of oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) in the cosmetic composition is 0.6 to 10.0% by weight, based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition. Oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) in the range of 0.6 to 10.0% by weight is particularly suitable for obtaining cosmetic compositions with excellent long-term stability. According to a particularly preferred embodiment of the present invention, the amount of oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) in the cosmetic composition is 1.0 to 8.0% by weight, more preferably 1.5 to 6.0% by weight, and most preferably 1.5 to 4.0% by weight, based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition.
[0069] The cosmetic composition of the present invention contains at least one natural organic thickener. According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the amount of the natural organic thickener is at least 0.05% by weight, preferably 0.05 to 5% by weight, based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition. It has been found that amounts of the natural organic thickener of 0.08 to 3% by weight, preferably 0.1 to 2% by weight, more preferably 0.15% to 1% by weight, and most preferably 0.2% to 0.5% by weight, based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition, are particularly suitable for providing structural integrity to the cosmetic composition of the present invention.
[0070] In the present invention, it has been discovered that oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) combined with at least one natural organic thickener provides a stable, sufficiently viscous, and homogeneous cosmetic composition. The sunscreen formulation to be tested was applied at a concentration of 1.2 mg / cm² on the PMMA plate. 2 The product was applied in the specified amount. Three plates were used for each type of formulation, and five measurements were taken per plate. The formulation was spread as evenly as possible on the plate by hand. The plates coated with the formulation were stored at room temperature in a dark place for 30 minutes before measurement.
[0095] In vitro transmittance measurements were performed at 290-400 nm in 1 nm increments using a Labsphere UV Transmittance Analyzer UV 2000S. UV transmission spectra were obtained, and the in vitro SPF value was calculated according to the following equation (average SPF of all 15 measurements (5 measurements per plate for 3 plates)).

[0096] The present invention also relates to the use of a combination of oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) and at least one natural organic thickener to stabilize a cosmetic composition, wherein the cosmetic composition contains less than 0.1% by weight of synthetic polymer material based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition, and the cosmetic composition contains at least one organic or inorganic UV filter. As discussed in relation to the compositions of the present invention, the combination of oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) and a natural organic thickener provides a stable and storable cosmetic composition without the need for any synthetic thickeners.
[0097] This disclosure relating to cosmetic compositions of the present invention also applies, with modifications as necessary, to the use of a combination of oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) and at least one natural organic thickener for stabilizing the cosmetic composition.
[0098] The present invention also relates to the use of oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) and at least one natural organic thickener to increase the viscosity of a cosmetic composition, wherein the cosmetic composition contains less than 0.1% by weight of synthetic polymer material based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition, and the cosmetic composition contains at least one organic or inorganic UV filter. The use of oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) and at least one natural organic thickener results in an increase in viscosity of the cosmetic composition compared to a cosmetic composition that does not contain the combination of oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) and at least one natural organic thickener.
[0099] This disclosure relating to cosmetic compositions of the present invention is also applicable, with modifications to the use of a combination of oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch) and at least one natural organic thickener to increase the viscosity of the cosmetic composition.
[0100] Furthermore, the present invention provides oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch), at least one natural organic thickener, and other components of the cosmetic composition for obtaining a cosmetic composition, and relates to a method for preparing the cosmetic composition of the present invention by mixing oryza sativa starch (INCI Oryza Sativa (US) starch), at least one natural organic thickener, and other components, wherein the cosmetic composition contains less than 0.1% by weight of synthetic polymer material based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition, and the cosmetic composition contains at least one organic or inorganic UV filter.
[0101] The present invention will be further explained by the following examples. [Examples]
[0102] The composition comprising the combination of oryza sativa starch and at least one natural organic thickener, as well as comparative examples, were prepared as follows:
[0103] First, parts A and B were prepared separately and then heated to 80°C while stirring. Part A was incorporated into part B while increasing the stirring, and homogenized in an Ultra Turrax. The mixture was then allowed to cool to room temperature (25°C) while stirring. Next, part C was added to the mixture, and the combined mixture was stirred. Finally, part D was added, and the resulting final mixture was stirred at room temperature for a further 30 minutes. The pH of the mixture was adjusted to 6.0-7.0 with citric acid.
[0104] Cosmetic compositions as shown in Table 1 were obtained. The cosmetic compositions according to the present invention contain oryza sativa (US) starch and 0.30% by weight of natural organic thickeners, namely tara gum, algin, and xanthan gum (Examples of the present invention, Inv.Ex.1-3). Comparative cosmetic compositions either do not contain oryza sativa starch (Comp.Ex.1-3) or do not contain natural organic thickeners (Comp.Ex.4).
[0105] [Table 1]
[0106] Algin-containing formulations require the addition of a divalent cation, specifically calcium chloride dihydrate, to activate gel formation by generating a so-called "egg box" structure.
[0107] Each formulation was filled into a 250 mL glass bottle, and the viscosity of the different compositions, Inv.Ex.1-3 and Comp.Ex.1-4, was measured using Brookfield DVIII 24 hours after preparation. In addition, the stability of the different compositions was evaluated visually at room temperature after different time periods (24 hours, 1 month, 2 months, and 3 months). Table 2 shows the results of the viscosity measurement and macroscopic stability evaluation.
[0108] [Table 2]
[0109] The data in Table 2 shows that the compositions of the present invention exhibit substantially higher viscosity than the comparative compositions. Rice starch alone does not provide sufficient thickening ability to obtain an acceptable viscosity for topical cosmetic compositions (viscosity Comp.Ex.4 η=112 mPa.s). In addition, this formulation exhibited phase separation within 2 months. Interestingly, when rice starch was added to compositions containing natural organic thickeners, the viscosity of all tested compositions increased by more than 2.5 times. The compositions of the present invention, containing rice starch and natural organic thickeners, exhibited excellent stability for 1 to 3 months without any phase separation. In contrast, the comparative examples without rice starch (Comp.Ex.1-3) exhibited phase separation and / or suboptimal viscosity characteristics after storage for a certain period.
[0110] Both the composition of Comparative Example 3 and the composition of Example 3 of the present invention, which contains xanthan gum as a natural organic thickener, remained stable after a 3-month storage period, although the viscosity of the composition of the present invention was nearly three times higher than that of the comparative composition. To simulate the effects of longer storage periods, accelerated stability tests were performed on the compositions of Comparative Example 3 and Example 3 of the present invention. Centrifugal evaluation was used as the accelerated stability test. For this purpose, 15 g of each formulation was transferred to a centrifuge tube. The centrifugation conditions were 5000 rpm for 10 minutes. The centrifuge used for the stability test was a Heraeus Multifuge X1R. After the centrifugation step, the two samples were analyzed for phase separation. In the case of Example 3 of the present invention, the formulation remained completely homogeneous even after centrifugation. In contrast, in the formulation of Comparative Example 3, a clearly visible phase separation was observed in the centrifuge tube after centrifugation. Thus, when the accelerated stability test was performed by centrifugal evaluation, a clear difference in stability could be observed for the formulation of Example 3 of the present invention, in contrast to Comparative Example 3.
[0111] The examples demonstrate that cosmetic compositions containing oryza sative starch and at least one natural organic thickener exhibit excellent viscosity and stability properties.
