Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] Technical Field
[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to fluid filtration, and more specifically to a filter assembly having multiple filters. [Background technology]
[0002] Background information A vehicle drivetrain (e.g., for a passenger vehicle or commercial vehicle) may include one or more of an automatic transmission, a manual transmission, and / or an electric drive. The vehicle drivetrain (e.g., the automatic transmission, the manual transmission, and / or the electric drive) may require lubrication and thermal management to function properly and / or reliably. The lubrication and thermal management may be provided by a lubricant (e.g., oil) moving through a lubrication circuit using a pump, the lubrication circuit including the vehicle drive mechanism. A filter may be positioned upstream and / or downstream of the pump to collect contaminants in the lubricant. For example, a first filter may be coupled to an inlet of the pump and a second filter may be coupled to an outlet of the pump. Such an arrangement may result in multiple sealing interfaces (e.g., between the pump inlet and the first filter and between the pump outlet and the second filter). Increasing the number of sealing interfaces may increase complexity, cost, and / or weight.

[0005] Detailed Description
[0011] The present disclosure generally relates to a fluid (e.g., lubricant and / or coolant) filter assembly. The fluid filter assembly may be configured to filter a lubricant and / or coolant used in a vehicle drivetrain. For example, the lubricant filter assembly may filter a lubricant passing through one or more of an automatic transmission, a manual transmission, and / or an electric drive (the lubricant may also be used for heat transfer). In this example, the lubricant filter assembly may include a manifold configured to fluidly couple to a pump. The pump includes a pump inlet and a pump outlet, and is configured such that the lubricant flows through the manifold. The manifold includes a pump interface fluidly coupled to the pump inlet and the pump outlet, a first filter holder configured to receive a first filter, and a second filter holder configured to receive a second filter. The first filter holder is upstream of the pump inlet and fluidly coupled to the pump inlet via the pump interface. The second filter holder is downstream of the pump outlet and fluidly coupled to the pump outlet via the pump interface.
[0006]
[0012] 1 illustrates a system diagram 100 including a vehicle drivetrain 102, a fluid (e.g., lubricant and / or coolant) filter assembly 104, an oil pan 106, and a pump 108 fluidly coupled to the oil pan 106. The vehicle drivetrain 102 may include one or more of an automatic transmission, a manual transmission, and / or an electric drive.
[0007]
[0013] As shown, the filter assembly 104 includes a manifold 110 that is fluidly coupled to an inlet and an outlet of a pump 108 and is fluidly coupled to the oil pan 106. The manifold 110 includes a first filter 112 upstream of the inlet of the pump 108 and a second filter 114 downstream of the outlet of the pump 108. In other words, the first filter 112 can generally be described as a pre-pump (or suction) filter and the second filter 114 can generally be described as a post-pump (or pressure) filter.
[0008]
[0014] During operation, the pump 108 causes fluid to flow from the oil pan 106 along a fluid path 116. The fluid path 116 extends from the oil pan 106, through the pump 108, the manifold 110, and the vehicle drivetrain 102, and back to the oil pan 106. In other words, the fluid path 116 can be generally described as a fluid loop (e.g., a lubricant and / or coolant loop). As shown, a first filter 112 is positioned along the fluid path 116 between the oil pan 106 and the pump 108, and a second filter 114 is positioned along the fluid path 116 between the pump 108 and the vehicle drivetrain 102.
[0009]
[0015] 2 and 3 show perspective views of a filter assembly 200, an example of the filter assembly 104 of FIG.
[0010]
[0016] 2, the filter assembly 200 includes a manifold 204. The manifold 204 is fluidly coupled to the pump 202. The manifold 204 includes a manifold body 205, a manifold inlet 206, and a manifold outlet 208 configured to be fluidly coupled to the manifold inlet 206 via the pump 202. The manifold inlet 206 and the manifold outlet 208 may be at least partially defined by the manifold body 205. The manifold inlet 206 may include (e.g., define) a first filter holder 210 configured to receive a first filter 212. The first filter 212 may be configured as a suction filter. In some cases, there may be multiple first filters 212 (e.g., arranged in series or in parallel). Additionally or alternatively, the first filter 212 may be a multi-component filter.
[0011]
[0017] The first filter 212 has an area of, for example, 15 square centimeters (cm 2 )~50cm2 By way of further example, the first filter 212 may be a mesh filter having a surface area in the range of about 21 cm and a pore size in the range of 100 microns to 300 microns. 2 As yet another example, the first filter 212 may be a mesh filter having a surface area of approximately 100 mm (e.g., within 10% of the surface area) and a pore size of approximately 200 microns. 2 ~100cm 2 As yet another example, the first filter 212 may be a mesh filter having a surface area in the range of, for example, 15 cm 2 ~30cm 2 As yet another example, the first filter 212 may be a mesh filter having a surface area in the range of about 80 cm. 2 The filter may be a mesh filter having a surface area of
[0012]
[0018] The manifold outlet 208 may include (e.g., define) a flow distributor 214 configured to form two or more separate fluid flow paths (e.g., a fluid flow path for cooling and a fluid flow path for lubrication). The manifold outlet 208 may include a seal 215 (e.g., a press-in-place seal) configured to sealingly interact with one or more fluid connectors (e.g., configured to deliver fluid to a vehicle drivetrain). Optionally, the manifold outlet 208 may be provided with an outlet filter. The outlet filter may be configured as a single layer structure (e.g., to mitigate flow restriction).
[0013]
[0019] As shown, the manifold 204 can also include a second filter holder 217 configured to receive a second filter (e.g., a pressure filter). The second filter holder 217 can be defined by the manifold body 205. The second filter holder 217 is downstream of the pump 202 and the first filter holder 210 is upstream of the pump 202. In this manner, fluid flows through the first filter holder 210 before flowing through the pump 202 and through the pump 202 before flowing through the second filter holder 217. In some cases, there can be multiple second filter holders 217 (e.g., arranged in series or in parallel), each configured to receive a respective second filter.
[0014]
[0020] In some cases, the manifold 204 (e.g., the manifold body 205) may include a bracket 216. The bracket 216 may be integrally formed from the manifold body 205. The bracket 216 is configured to limit (e.g., engage or contact) the movement of an external component 218 (e.g., a component of a vehicle drivetrain). Limiting the movement of the external component 218 may prevent the external component 218 from becoming dislodged from the vehicle (e.g., as a result of vibration). The bracket 216 may not interact with the fluid flowing through the manifold 204, but may result in a simplification of the vehicle drivetrain and / or a reduction in part count.
[0015]
[0021] 3, the manifold 204 can include a manifold cover 300. The manifold cover 300 can be coupled to the manifold body 205 (e.g., using adhesives, laser welding, spin welding, ultrasonic welding, mechanical fasteners, and / or any other type of fitting). For example, the manifold cover 300 can be permanently coupled to the manifold body 205 (e.g., removal of the manifold cover 300 renders the manifold 204 unusable in a manner consistent with the design intent). Optionally, the manifold cover 300 can include (e.g., define) a bracket 216.
[0016]
[0022] As shown, the manifold cover 300 can include a baffle 302. Additionally or alternatively, the manifold body 205 can include (e.g., define) at least a portion (e.g., all) of the baffle 302. The baffle 302 can be spaced apart from the manifold body 205 and / or the pump 202 such that a passthrough 304 extends therebetween. For example, as shown, at least a portion of the baffle 302 can have a shape that generally corresponds to an outer shape of a portion of the manifold body 205 and / or a portion of the pump 202. The passthrough 304 can be configured to receive a portion of a moving component (e.g., a chain and / or one or more sprockets of a vehicle drivetrain). The baffle 302 can be configured to reduce agitation, aeration, and / or viscous drag losses (e.g., as a result of fluid flow away from the moving component). The baffles 302 may not interact with the fluid flowing through the manifold 204, but may result in simplification and / or reduced part count in the vehicle drivetrain.
[0017]
[0023] As shown in FIG. 4 , the manifold cover 300 can close at least a portion of one or more passages 400 extending within the manifold body 205. The one or more passages 400 are configured to convey a fluid. In one example, the manifold body 205 can be formed using injection molding such that at least a portion of the one or more passages 400 are formed from the manifold body 205, where at least a portion of at least one of the one or more passages 400 is open. In this example, the manifold cover 300 can close at least a portion of at least one of the one or more passages 400 when the manifold cover 300 is coupled to the manifold body 205. The one or more passages 400 can include an inlet passage 402, a middle passage 404, and an outlet passage 406. The manifold cover 300 can close at least a portion of the middle passage 404 and at least a portion of the outlet passage 406.
[0018]
[0024] The inlet passage 402 extends between the manifold inlet 206 and the pump inlet 408 of the pump 202. In other words, the inlet passage 402 fluidly couples the manifold inlet 206 to the pump inlet 408. The intermediate passage 404 extends between the pump outlet 410 of the pump 202 and the filter inlet 412 of the second filter holder 217. In other words, the intermediate passage 404 fluidly couples the pump outlet 410 to the filter inlet 412 of the second filter holder 217. The outlet passage 406 extends between the filter outlet 414 of the second filter holder 217 and the manifold outlet 208. In other words, the outlet passage 406 fluidly couples the filter outlet 414 of the second filter holder 217 to the manifold outlet 208.
[0019]
[0025] 5 illustrates the pump 202 separated from the manifold 204. As shown, the manifold body 205 defines a pump interface 500 configured to fluidly couple with the pump 202. The pump interface 500 includes an interface inlet 502 and an interface outlet 504. As shown, the interface inlet 502 and the interface outlet 504 can be spaced apart along a longitudinal axis 506 of the pump interface 500 and disposed in a common plane. For example, the longitudinal axis 506 can be a central longitudinal axis and can intersect the centers of the interface inlet 502 and the interface outlet 504.
[0020]
[0026] The interface inlet 502 is configured to be fluidly coupled to the pump inlet 408, and the interface outlet 504 is configured to be fluidly coupled to the pump outlet 410. Thus, the inlet passage 402 extends between the manifold inlet 206 and the interface inlet 502 to fluidly couple the manifold inlet 206 to the interface inlet 502, and the intermediate passage 404 extends between the interface outlet 504 and the filter inlet 412 (FIG. 4) to fluidly couple the interface outlet 504 to the second filter holder 217. When the manifold 204 is coupled to the pump 202, the pump 202 fluidly couples the inlet passage 402 to the intermediate passage 404 to allow fluid to flow from the inlet passage 402, through the pump 202, and into the intermediate passage 404.
[0021]
[0027] The pump interface 500 further defines an interface sealing surface 508 configured to directly or indirectly mate with a corresponding surface of the pump 202. For example, a seal (e.g., a compression seal) may be positioned along the interface sealing surface 508 such that the seal is in sealing engagement with the pump 202 when the pump 202 is coupled with the manifold 204. As shown, the interface sealing surface 508 extends around the interface inlet 502 and the interface outlet 504. The interface sealing surface 508 may be substantially parallel (e.g., within 1°, 2°, 3°, 4°, or 5° of parallel) with an outlet sealing surface 510 that extends around the manifold outlet 208.
[0022]
[0028] FIG. 6 shows an exploded view of the filter assembly 200. As shown, the second filter holder 217 defines a filter cavity 600 configured to receive the second filter 602. The filter cavity 600 can have a shape (e.g., cylindrical) corresponding to the shape (e.g., cylindrical) of the second filter 602. The second filter 602 can be configured to pass fluid from a filter outer surface 604 to a filter inner surface 606, which defines a filter fluid flow passage 610 that directs the fluid through the filter outlet 414 (FIG. 4). A filter seal 612 can be disposed about the filter outlet 414. The second filter 602 can be configured as a pressure filter. In some cases, there may be multiple second filters 602 (e.g., arranged in series or in parallel).
[0023]
[0029] In some cases, flow through the second filter 602 may be restricted (e.g., as a result of debris buildup and / or high fluid viscosity). In such cases, the second filter 602 may be bypassed. For example, there may be a pressure sensitive bypass valve configured to allow fluid to bypass the second filter 602 and / or the second filter 602 may be configured to include a bypass feature.
[0024]
[0030] The second filter holder 217 can include a closable open end 614 configured to receive the second filter 602. For example, the filter cavity 600 of the second filter holder 217 can define the closable open end 614, through which the second filter 602 passes when inserted into the filter cavity 600 of the second filter holder 217. A cap 616 is configured to close the closable open end 614. The cap 616 can be configured to be coupled to the second filter holder 217 using one or more of an adhesive, ultrasonic welding, laser welding, spin welding, mechanical fasteners (e.g., threaded joints), and / or any other type of joint. In some cases, the cap 616 can be configured to be permanently coupled to the second filter holder 217 (e.g., removal of the cap 616 disables the manifold 204 in a manner consistent with the design intent).
[0025]
[0031] As shown, the cap 616 and the manifold cover 300 are on opposite sides of the manifold body 205. Also as shown, the closable open end 614 and the sealing faces 508 and 510 face in the same direction. Optionally, two or more (e.g., each) of the interface axis 618 extending perpendicular to the interface sealing face 508, the outlet axis 620 extending perpendicular to the outlet sealing face 510, and the second filter holder axis 622 of the second filter holder 217 (e.g., the longitudinal axis of the second filter holder 217) may each be substantially parallel to one another. Optionally, at least one of the interface axis 618, the outlet axis 620, and / or the second filter holder axis 622 may be substantially perpendicular to at least one other of the interface axis 618, the outlet axis 620, and / or the second filter holder axis 622. For example, the second filter holder axis 622 may be substantially perpendicular to the outlet axis 620. As a further example, the interface axis 618 can be substantially perpendicular to the outlet axis 620. As a further example, the second filter holder axis 622 can be substantially perpendicular to the interface axis 618.
[0026]
[0032] A first filter holder axis 624 of the first filter holder 210 (e.g., an axis that extends substantially perpendicular to the inlet side 625 and the outlet side 627 of the first filter 212 when the first filter 212 is received within the first filter holder 210) may be substantially perpendicular to one or more (e.g., each) of the interface axis 618, the outlet axis 620 and / or the second filter holder axis 622. As shown, the manifold body 205 is a monolithic body (e.g., a single injection molded part) that defines at least a portion of the first filter holder 210, the second filter holder 217, the pump interface 500, the manifold outlet 208 ( FIG. 2 ), and the one or more passageways 400 ( FIG. 4 ).
[0027]
[0033] The manifold body 205 may further define one or more mounting openings 626. The one or more mounting openings 626 may include a bushing 628. At least one bushing 628 may be a locating bushing.
[0028]
[0034] 7 illustrates a perspective view of a manifold 204 coupled to a pump 202 in a schematic example environment. As illustrated, a first filter holder 210 faces an oil pan 700 configured to hold fluid therein. The pump 202 is configured to pass fluid in the oil pan 700 through the first filter holder 210 and into the manifold 204. The pump 202 directs the fluid after passing through the manifold 204 through a manifold outlet 208 and into a fluid connector 702, which directs the fluid to a component 704 (shown as transparent for clarity) of the vehicle (e.g., a drivetrain).

The cap can be configured to close the closable open end.
[0030]
[0036] Optionally, the manifold may further include a manifold cover coupled to the manifold body and closing at least a portion of the intermediate passage and at least a portion of the outlet passage. Optionally, the cap and the manifold cover may be on opposite sides of the manifold body. Optionally, the manifold cover may include a baffle spaced apart from the manifold body with the through-hole extending therebetween.
