[0014] FIG. 1 illustrates a system 100 for improving hardware and software techniques related to detecting, evaluating, and normalizing periodic electrical signals of a device 138 to detect and repair potential hardware and software problems associated with the operation of the device 138, according to an embodiment of the present invention. As a result of a typical device operation, a periodic signal is generated. The hidden law of the periodic signal may be analyzed to monitor the health of the device. Examples of periodic signals may include, among others, periodic pressure values of a water pump, periodic acoustic or vibration signals of an engine, or periodic distance signals of gear engagement, or both. For example, periodic pressure values of a water pump may be used to determine the operation status of the water pump. Similarly, periodic infrared monitoring data of an engine may be used to monitor the health of the engine. However, when a periodic signal is sliced for analysis (of real-time acquisition), the same signal may exhibit different characteristics in different periodic segments (due to different cut points). Thus, the system 100 is configured to enable a process of normalizing periodic signal segments to enable the device to distinguish between different signals. Intelligent classification of signals (normal or abnormal) allows for immediate detection to predict equipment defects. A representative process for determining whether a periodic signal is normal or abnormal may include a binary classification process that includes modeling the normal signal with respect to training data such that a test signal that fits the modeling pattern is deemed normal. In a real-time monitoring process, the periodic signal is divided into multiple segments with respect to the cycle, and each signal segment is compared with a standard normal signal. If there is a match, the associated segment may be considered as a normal signal. However, when comparing the signal segments with the standard signal, each signal segment may be divided at a different period point, resulting in a discrepancy due to misalignment of the division points. Therefore, the system 100 is configured to normalize signals of different periods to eliminate discrepancies caused by misalignment of the division points.
[0015] The system 100 allows for a normalization process for the correction of periodic signals. This process involves identifying a nadir for each periodic signal segment and rotating a component of the device (e.g., a pump motor) for a period occurring before the nadir until the end of the periodic signal segment, which results in the same type of periodic signal being associated with the same characteristic with the same starting point. Additionally (for complex signals), differential characteristics and minimum relative angle characteristics may be determined to identify the nadir for each periodic signal segment, which improves the accuracy of machine recognition.
[0016] In the process of segmenting a periodic signal, signal segments of different durations may be associated with different characteristics due to different starting points. Thus, the system 100 enables a normalization process that allows signal segments located in the same duration to show similar characteristics when stitched together despite different segmentation starting points. The normalization process begins when a same segment point in a signal segment is identified. Then, a first half of the segment point is rotated and stitched to a second half of the signal segment. Identifying the same segment point may include identifying a nadir of the signal in a cycle. Alternatively, identifying the same segment point may include identifying a difference characteristic and a relative minimum angle. The difference characteristic is defined herein as the difference between the nadir and the associated previous sample point and the difference between the nadir and the next sample point. The difference characteristic represents the change in the amplitude of the signal, and therefore the difference characteristic may distinguish between nadirs with different difference characteristics. When the amplitudes of multiple nadirs have the same amplitude, the relative minimum angle may be used to identify the same segment point. In this specification, the relative minimum angle is defined as the angle between the line connecting the lowest point and the highest point (within one cycle) and the horizontal line. The relative minimum angle analyzes the difference between the lowest point and the highest point and the distance between them to pinpoint the lowest point more accurately.
[0017] The system 100 of FIG. 1 includes hardware devices 139 (i.e., dedicated hardware), apparatuses 138, and a network interface controller 153 interconnected through a network 117. The hardware devices 139 include dedicated circuitry 127 (which may include dedicated software), sensors 112, and machine learning software code / hardware structures 121 (i.e., including machine learning software code). The interface controller 153 may include any type of device or apparatus that securely interfaces hardware and software to a network. The apparatuses 138 include any type of hardware or software device that requires monitoring (operation), and may include, among others, engines, water pumps, devices with gears, etc. The apparatuses 138 may be Bluetooth® enabled to provide connectivity to each other and to any type of system. The apparatuses 138 include dedicated circuitry 125 (which may include dedicated software / services) and sensors 110. The sensors 110 and 112 may include any type of built-in or external sensor, including, among others, a 3D ultrasonic sensor module, a temperature sensor, an ultrasonic sensor, a light sensor, a video capture device, an audio capture device, a humidity sensor, a voltage sensor, a pressure sensor, and the like. The hardware device 139 and the apparatus 138 may each include an embedded device. An embedded device is defined herein as a dedicated device or computer that includes a combination of computer hardware and software (fixed capacity or programmable) specifically designed to perform a dedicated function. A programmable embedded computer or device may have a dedicated programming interface. In one embodiment, the hardware device 139 and the apparatus 138 may each include a dedicated hardware device that includes dedicated (non-general purpose) hardware and circuitry (i.e., dedicated discrete non-general purpose analog circuitry, digital circuitry, and logic-based circuitry) that performs (individually or in combination) the processes described with respect to FIGS. 1-8.The dedicated discrete non-general purpose analog, digital, and logic-based circuits may include unique, specially designed components (e.g., dedicated integrated circuits, such as application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) designed solely to implement automated processes that advance hardware and software technology associated with detecting, evaluating, and normalizing periodic electrical signals of the device 138 to detect and repair potential hardware and software problems associated with operation of the device 138). The network 117 may include any type of network, including, among others, a 5G telecommunications network, a local area network (LAN), a wide area network (WAN), the Internet, a wireless network, and the like. Alternatively, the network 117 may include an application programming interface (API).
[0018] The system 100 can align the periodic signal segments before aligning the associated nadir of the signal, thereby reducing inefficiencies with respect to machine recognition. The alignment process involves identifying common segment points among different periodic segments and rotating the associated portions that occur before the division points that extend to the end of the signal segment. The common alignment points are determined so that each periodic segment has similar characteristics for detecting device anomalies.
[0019] FIG. 2 illustrates an algorithm detailing a process flow enabled by the system 100 of FIG. 1 to improve hardware and software techniques associated with detecting, evaluating, and normalizing a periodic electrical signal of a device to detect and repair potential hardware and software problems associated with operation of the device, according to an embodiment of the present invention. The steps of the algorithm of FIG. 2 may be enabled and performed in any order by a computer processor executing computer code. Additionally, the steps of the algorithm of FIG. 2 may be enabled and performed by a combination of hardware device 139 and apparatus 138. In step 200, an alignment point of a periodic signal segment of a periodic signal is detected. The periodic signal is generated by a device being monitored for standard functionality. In step 202, the device is operated (in response to the result of step 200) from a period before the alignment point to an end of the periodic signal segment. Operating the device may include rotating a portion of the device from a period before the alignment point to an end of the periodic signal segment.
[0020] In step 204, a first point of a periodic signal segment is identified. Additionally, a second point of another periodic signal segment of the periodic signal is identified. The second point has the same point as the first point. The first and second points may each include, among others, a unique (previously selected) division point, a common alignment point, etc.
[0021] Identifying the first and second points may include the following: 1. Determine the nadir of a periodic signal segment. 2. Determining a difference characteristic between a first point of a periodic signal segment and a second point of another periodic signal segment. Determining the difference characteristic may include determining a first difference between a nadir point of the periodic signal segment and a previously obtained sample point, and determining a second difference between the nadir point of the periodic signal segment and a next sample point. Determining the first difference and the second difference may indicate a change in amplitude of the periodic signal. 3. Determine a relative minimum angle between a first point of a periodic signal segment and a second point of another periodic signal segment, the relative minimum angle including the angle between a line connecting the lowest point and the highest point of the periodic signal segment and a horizontal line. 4. Analyze the nadir in terms of differential characteristics and relative minimum angle.
[0022] In step 208, the periodic signal is normalized in response to locating the first and second points. In step 210, it is determined (based on the results of step 204) that the device has failed or is in need of maintenance (hardware and / or software).
[0023] FIG. 3 shows an internal structural diagram of the machine learning software / hardware structure 121 (and / or circuit 127) of FIG. 1 according to an embodiment of the present invention. The machine learning software / hardware structure 121 includes a detection module 304, an operation module 310, a periodic signal identification module 308, a signal normalization module 314, and a communication controller 302. The detection module 304 has dedicated hardware and software to control all functions related to the alignment point detection step of FIG. 1 and FIG. 2. The operation module 310 has dedicated hardware and software to control all functions related to the control of the device operation functions implementing the process described with respect to the algorithm of FIG. 2. The periodic signal identification module 308 has dedicated hardware and software to control all functions related to the periodic signal identification step of FIG. 2. The signal normalization module 314 has dedicated hardware and software to control all functions related to the normalization of the periodic signal described above. The communication controller 302 can control all communication between the detection module 304, the operation module 310, the periodic signal identification module 308, and the signal normalization module 314.
[0024] 4 illustrates a signal rotation and merging process for implementing a signal normalization process according to an embodiment of the present invention. A normalization process associated with a periodic signal 400 (associated with a device) is performed to identify the nadir 402a-402n of each periodic signal segment 404a-404n, and then rotate (407) a portion of the device from before the nadir to the end point of the associated periodic signal segment such that periodic signals of the same type have the same characteristics due to their association with the same starting point. Additionally (for complex signals), differential characteristics and minimum relative angle characteristics may be determined to identify the nadir 402a-402n of each periodic signal segment 404a-404n, as described below with respect to FIG. 5.
[0025] FIG. 5 illustrates an end point alignment process that implements a signal normalization process according to an embodiment of the present invention. The end point alignment process is performed to enable the system 100 of FIG. 1 to identify the same segment point among different periodic segments 501a-501n. A difference characteristic 505 and a minimum relative angle 504 characteristic may be determined to identify the nadir of each periodic signal segment. The difference characteristic 505 is defined as the difference between a nadir (e.g., point 506a) and its previous sample point (e.g., point 506b) and the difference between the nadir and its next sample point (e.g., point 506c). The difference characteristic reflects the change in amplitude of the signal 500, so this characteristic may distinguish between different nadirs. When multiple nadirs have the same amplitude point, a minimum relative angle 504 may be determined to identify the nadir of each periodic signal segment. The relative minimum angle refers to the angle between a line (e.g., line 510) connecting the lowest point (e.g., point 507b) and the highest point (e.g., point 507c) in one cycle and the horizontal line 514. The relative minimum angle feature analyzes the difference between the lowest point and the highest point and the distance between the two points to accurately identify the lowest point.
[0026] FIG. 6 illustrates a computer system 90 (e.g., hardware device 138 or apparatus 139, or both, of FIG. 1) that may be used by or configured with the system of FIG. 1 to improve hardware and software techniques associated with detecting, evaluating, and normalizing periodic electrical signals of a device to detect and repair potential hardware and software problems associated with operation of the device, in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.

[0040] Although this disclosure includes detailed descriptions of cloud computing, it should be understood that implementation of the teachings described herein is not limited to a cloud computing environment. Rather, embodiments of the invention can be implemented in conjunction with any other type of computing environment now known or later developed.
[0041] Cloud computing is a service delivery model that enables convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, network bandwidth, servers, processing, memory, storage, applications, virtual machines, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or interaction with a service provider. The cloud model may include at least five characteristics, at least three service models, and at least four deployment models.
[0042] The features are as follows:
[0043] On-demand self-service, which allows cloud customers to unilaterally provision computing capacity, such as server time and network storage, automatically as needed, without the need for human interaction with the service provider.
[0044] Broad network access: Each capability is available over the network and accessed through standard mechanisms that facilitate use by heterogeneous thin- or thick-client platforms (eg, cell phones, laptops, and PDAs).
[0045] Resource sharing: A provider's computing resources are pooled to serve multiple customers using a multi-tenant model, with various physical and virtual resources dynamically allocated and reallocated according to demand. Generally, customers have no control or knowledge of the exact location of the resources provided, although there is a sense of location independence in that they may be able to specify a location (e.g., country, state, or data center) at a higher level of abstraction.
[0046] Rapid scalability. Capacity can be provisioned quickly and elastically, sometimes automatically, allowing capacity to grow quickly or be released and scaled down quickly. To the consumer, capacity available for provisioning often appears unlimited, and as much as needed can be purchased at any time.
[0047] Services are instrumentable. Cloud systems automatically control and optimize resource usage by leveraging instrumentation at some level of abstraction appropriate to the type of service (e.g., storage, processing, bandwidth, and active user accounts). Resource usage can be monitored, controlled, and reported, providing transparency to both providers and consumers of the services used.
[0048] The service model is as follows:
[0049] Software delivered as a service (SaaS). The consumer is entitled to use the provider's applications running on a cloud infrastructure. The applications are accessible from a variety of client devices through thin-client interfaces such as web browsers (e.g., web-based email). The consumer has no management or control over the underlying cloud infrastructure, including networks, servers, operating systems, storage, or even individual application capabilities, with the possible exception of limited user-specific application configuration settings.
[0050] Platform as a Service (PaaS). Customers are granted the right to deploy applications they create or acquire on a cloud infrastructure, written using programming languages and tools supported by the provider. Customers do not manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure, including networks, servers, operating systems, or storage, but do have control over the deployed applications and, in some cases, the configuration of the environment that hosts the applications.
[0051] Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). The customer is authorized to provision processing, storage, network, and other basic computing resources. The customer may deploy and run any software, which may include operating systems and applications. The customer does not manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure, but has management rights over the operating systems, storage, deployed applications, and possibly limited management rights over selected network components (e.g., host firewalls).
[0052] The implementation models are as follows:
[0053] Private Cloud: The cloud infrastructure serves only an organization. A private cloud may be managed by the organization or a third party and may exist on-premise or off-premise.
[0054] Community Cloud: Cloud infrastructure is shared among several organizations to support a particular community with shared concerns (e.g., mission, security requirements, policies, compliance requirements). A community cloud may be managed by the organization or a third party and may exist on-premise or off-premise.
[0055] Public Cloud: Cloud infrastructure is made available to the general public or large industry entities and is owned by organizations that sell cloud services.
[0056] Hybrid Cloud: A cloud infrastructure is a combination of two or more clouds (private, community, or public) that remain unique entities, but are bound together by standard or proprietary technologies that allow data and application portability (e.g., cloud bursting to distribute load between clouds).
[0057] Cloud computing environments are service-oriented with an emphasis on statelessness, loose coupling, modularity, and semantic interoperability. At the heart of cloud computing is an infrastructure that includes a network of interconnected nodes.
[0058] 7, an exemplary cloud computing environment 50 is shown. As shown, the cloud computing environment 50 includes one or more cloud computing nodes 10 with which local computing devices used by cloud users (e.g., personal digital assistants (PDAs) or mobile phones 54A, desktop computers 54B, laptop computers 54C, or automotive computer systems 54N, or combinations thereof) can communicate. Each node 10 may communicate with each other. These nodes may be physically or virtually grouped in one or more networks, such as a private cloud, a community cloud, a public cloud, or a hybrid cloud, or combinations thereof, as described above (not shown). This enables the cloud computing environment 50 to provide infrastructure, platform, or software as a service, or combinations thereof, without the cloud user having to maintain resources on a local computing device. It should be understood that the types of computing devices 54A, 54B, 54C, and 54N shown in FIG. 7 are for illustrative purposes only, and that computing node 10 and cloud computing environment 50 can communicate with any type of computer device, over any type of network or network-addressable communication means, or both (e.g., using a web browser).
