Description

[Technical field]

[0001] [CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS] This application claims the benefit of priority based on Korean Patent Application No. 10-2020-0134032 dated October 16, 2020, and all contents disclosed in the documents of said Korean patent application are incorporated herein by reference.

[0002] The present invention relates to a battery pack and a device including the same, and more particularly to a battery pack and a device including the same that simplify a cooling structure and improve space utilization. [Background technology]

[0003] In modern society, as the use of portable devices such as mobile phones, laptops, video cameras, and digital cameras has become commonplace, there has been active development of technology related to such mobile devices. In addition, rechargeable secondary batteries are being used as the power source for electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (P-HEVs), etc., as a measure to solve air pollution caused by existing gasoline-powered vehicles that use fossil fuels, so there is an increasing need for the development of secondary batteries.

[0004] Currently commercially available secondary batteries include nickel-cadmium batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, nickel-zinc batteries, and lithium secondary batteries. Of these, lithium secondary batteries are attracting attention due to the advantages they have over nickel-based secondary batteries, such as almost no memory effect, the ability to be charged and discharged freely, a very low self-discharge rate, and a high energy density.

[0005] Such lithium secondary batteries mainly use lithium-based oxides and carbon materials as positive and negative active materials, respectively, and include an electrode assembly in which a positive electrode plate and a negative electrode plate, to which the positive and negative active materials are applied, are disposed with a separator interposed therebetween, and a battery case that hermetically houses the electrode assembly together with an electrolyte.

[0006] In general, lithium secondary batteries are classified according to the shape of the exterior material into can-type secondary batteries in which an electrode assembly is housed in a metal can and pouch-type secondary batteries in which an electrode assembly is housed in a pouch made of an aluminum laminate sheet.

[0007] In the case of secondary batteries used in small devices, two or three battery cells are arranged, whereas in the case of secondary batteries used in medium to large devices such as automobiles, a battery module in which a number of battery cells are electrically connected is used. In such battery modules, a number of battery cells are connected to each other in series or parallel to form a battery cell stack, thereby improving capacity and output. In addition, one or more battery modules can be mounted with various control and protection systems such as a BMS (Battery Management System) and a cooling system to form a battery pack.

[0008] If the temperature of a secondary battery becomes higher than the appropriate temperature, the performance of the secondary battery may deteriorate, and if the temperature becomes too high, there is a risk of explosion or fire. In particular, in a battery module or battery pack having a large number of secondary batteries, i.e., battery cells, the temperature may rise rapidly and more quickly due to the heat generated from the large number of battery cells being combined in a small space. In other words, a battery module in which a large number of battery cells are stacked and a battery pack equipped with such a battery module can obtain high output, but it is difficult to remove the heat generated from the battery cells during charging and discharging. If the heat dissipation of the battery cells is not performed well, the battery cells deteriorate faster, their lifespan is shortened, and the possibility of explosion or fire increases.

[0009] Furthermore, battery modules included in vehicle battery packs are prone to exposure to direct sunlight and may be placed in high temperature conditions such as during the summer or in desert regions.

[0010] Therefore, when constructing a battery module or battery pack, it is extremely important to ensure stable and effective cooling performance.

[0011] FIG. 1 is a partial perspective view of a conventional battery pack, and FIG. 2 is a partial perspective view showing a mounting method of a battery module included in the battery pack of FIG.

[0012] 1 and 2, a conventional battery pack can include a plurality of battery modules 10 and a pack frame 11 in which the plurality of battery modules are housed. For convenience of explanation, FIG. 1 shows only one battery module.

[0013] In the conventional battery pack, a refrigerant pipe is provided to cool the battery module 10, and the refrigerant is supplied through a refrigerant pipe connector 13 connected to the refrigerant pipe. Such a refrigerant is usually cooling water, and a fluid indirect cooling structure is applied in which such cooling water is circulated inside the battery pack to lower the temperature.

[0014] Meanwhile, when the battery module 10 is housed in the pack frame 11, mounting holes are provided at the four corners, and the mounting bolts 12 pass through the mounting holes to fasten the battery module 10 to the pack frame 11. Such mounting connection is performed for each battery module 10.

[0015] At this time, the cooling structure, such as the refrigerant pipe connector 13 for cooling the battery module 10, and the mounting structure, such as the mounting bolts 12 for mounting the battery module 10, are separate structures, which creates a problem in that each structure has many parts and is complicated.

[0016] In addition, due to improper assembly or an accident during operation, the refrigerant may leak from the refrigerant pipe or the refrigerant pipe connector 13. The leaked refrigerant may enter the battery pack and cause a fire or explosion.

[0017] Therefore, there is a need to develop a battery pack that can minimize damage caused by refrigerant leakage while improving cooling performance.

[0018] In addition, in order to maintain structural stability, a vehicle battery pack is generally formed in a single layer structure by arranging a plurality of battery modules or battery module assemblies on the same plane. However, when a battery pack having such a single layer is installed in an electric vehicle that requires high capacity and high output and additional capacity is required, there are many structural limitations on the capacity increase. Furthermore, it is difficult to structurally expand the cooling device due to the additional capacity.

[0019] Therefore, there is currently a high demand for technology that can fundamentally solve these problems. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line BB in Fig. 4.

[0047] 3 and 4, a battery pack according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a plurality of battery modules 100 arranged vertically and horizontally, and a pack frame 1100 that houses the plurality of battery modules 100. The battery module 100 may include a battery cell stack in which a plurality of battery cells are stacked, a module frame that houses the battery cell stack, and a cooling plate located under a bottom of the module frame.

[0048] 3 to 5, a first cooling plate 300a and a second cooling plate 300b are formed on the lower side of a first battery module 100a and a second battery module 100b that are stacked vertically among the plurality of battery modules 100. The battery pack according to this embodiment includes a cooling pipe 1000 that connects the first cooling plate 300a and the second cooling plate 300b and is formed along one side of the first battery module 100a.

[0049] At least one mounting member 500 is coupled to at least one of the upper end and the lower end of the cooling pipe 1000. At least one of the upper end and the lower end of the cooling pipe 1000 is formed with a tapping portion (505) to which the mounting member 500 is attached. The tapping portion 505 may be a portion in which a part of a member constituting the cooling pipe is cut so that the mounting member 500 can be attached.

[0050] A cooling flow path 1000F through which a coolant flows is formed in the center of the cooling pipe 1000. The cooling flow path 1000F extends along the direction in which at least one mounting member 500 is arranged. The cooling flow path 1000F may extend long along the x-axis direction shown in Figures 4 and 5.

[0051] According to this embodiment, a first mounting member 500a is attached to a first tapping portion 505a formed at the lower end of the cooling pipe 1000 based on the cooling flow path 1000F, and a second mounting member 500b is attached to a second tapping portion 505b formed at the upper end of the cooling pipe 1000.

[0052] 3 to 5, the battery pack according to this embodiment may further include a first module cover 220a covering one side of the first battery module 100a and a second module cover 220b covering one side of the second battery module 100b. The first module cover 220a may include a first protruding cover 220p1 protruding from the first module cover 220a to a lower end of the cooling pipe 1000, and the second module cover 220b may include a second protruding cover 220p2 protruding from the second module cover 220b to an upper end of the cooling pipe 1000. In this case, the cooling pipe 1000 may be located between the first protruding cover 220p1 and the second protruding cover 220p2.

[0053] The mounting member 500 according to this embodiment is attached to the tapping portion 505 by penetrating the first protruding cover 220p1 or the second protruding cover 220p2. At this time, the module frame protruding portion 500p and the cooling plate protruding portion 300p overlap the protruding covers 220p1, 200p2, and the mounting member 500 is inserted through holes penetrating them. The module frame protruding portion 500p and the cooling plate protruding portion 300p will be described later.

[0054] 4 and 6, a plurality of holes (505h: hole portion) are formed in at least one of the upper end and the lower end of the cooling pipe 1000, and the refrigerant of the cooling pipe 1000 can flow into the first cooling plate 300a and the second cooling plate 300b through the holes 505h. The holes 505h can be connected to the cooling flow path 1000F.

[0055] A through hole is formed in the first protruding cover 220p1 portion and the second protruding cover 220p2 portion corresponding to the hole portion 505h, and a sealing member 600 is formed in the through hole.

[0056] According to this embodiment, a first sealing member 600a is attached to a first hole 505h1 formed at a lower end of the cooling pipe 1000 based on the cooling passage 1000F, and a second sealing member 600b is attached to a second hole 505h2 formed at an upper end of the cooling pipe 1000. [0057] The module frame protrusion 500p and the cooling plate protrusion 300p overlap the protrusion covers 220p1 and 200p2, and a sealing member 600 is inserted through holes passing through them.

[0058] As described above, according to the present embodiment, the cooling structure and the mounting structure are integrated through the cooling pipe, which simplifies the assembly process and improves the pack assembly efficiency. The cost is reduced by reducing the manufacturing process, and the rigidity is improved by the layered connection structure.

[0059] Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a battery module included in the battery pack of Fig. 3. Fig. 8 is an exploded perspective view of the battery module of Fig. 7.

[0060] 3, 7 and 8, a battery module 100 according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a battery cell stack 120 in which a plurality of battery cells 110 are stacked, and a module frame 200 that houses the battery cell stack 120. The battery module 100 may also include a cooling plate 300 located below a bottom 210a of the module frame 200, and a coolant may be supplied to and discharged from the cooling plate 300 through through holes 510h.

[0061] The battery cell 110 may be a pouch-type battery cell. Such a pouch-type battery cell is formed by housing an electrode assembly in a pouch case made of a laminate sheet including a resin layer and a metal layer, and then heat-sealing the outer periphery of the pouch case. At this time, the battery cell 110 is formed into a rectangular sheet-like structure.

[0062] A plurality of such battery cells 110 are configured, and the plurality of battery cells 110 are stacked so as to be electrically connected to each other to form a battery cell stack 120. In particular, as shown in Fig. 8, the plurality of battery cells 110 are stacked along a direction parallel to the x-axis.

[0063] The module frame 200 that houses the battery cell stack 120 can include a top plate 220 and a frame member 210. The frame member 210 can be U-shaped.

[0064] The frame member 210 may include a bottom portion 210a and two side portions 210b extending upward from both ends of the bottom portion 210a. The bottom portion 210a may cover the lower surface of the battery cell stack 120 (the direction opposite to the z-axis), and the side portions 210b may cover both side surfaces of the battery cell stack 120 (the direction opposite to the x-axis).

[0065] The upper plate 220 is formed as a single plate-shaped structure surrounding the remaining upper surface (z-axis direction) excluding the lower surface and both side surfaces surrounded by the frame member 210. The upper plate 220 and the frame member 210 can be joined by welding or the like with corresponding corners in contact with each other to form a structure that covers the battery cell stack 120 from above, below, left and right. The battery cell stack 120 can be physically protected by the upper plate 220 and the frame member 210. To this end, the upper plate 220 and the frame member 210 can include a metal material having a predetermined strength.

[0066] Meanwhile, although not specifically shown, the module frame 200 according to the modified example may be a monoframe made of a metal plate material with the top, bottom, and both sides integrated together. In other words, instead of a structure in which the frame member 210 and the upper plate 220 are interconnected, it is a structure in which the top, bottom, and both sides are integrated together by being manufactured by extrusion molding.

[0067] The end plates 400 are positioned on both open, corresponding sides (in the y-axis direction and the opposite direction) of the module frame 200 and are formed to cover the battery cell stack 120. Such end plates 400 can physically protect the battery cell stack 120 and other electrical components from external impacts.

[0068] Meanwhile, although not shown in detail, a bus bar frame on which a bus bar is mounted and an insulating cover for electrical insulation may be positioned between the battery cell stack 120 and the end plate 400 .

[0069] The module frame 200 according to this embodiment may include a module frame protrusion 500p formed by extending the bottom 210a of the module frame 200 and passing through the end plate 400. At this time, a plurality of through holes are formed in the module frame protrusion 500p, and the mounting member 500 and the sealing member 600 described with reference to Figures 4 to 6 are inserted into the plurality of through holes.

[0070] The cooling plate according to this embodiment will be specifically described below with reference to FIGS.

[0071] FIG. 9 is a perspective view of the battery module of FIG. 7 viewed from below to above the battery module along the z-axis direction.

[0072] 8 and 9, the bottom 210a of the module frame 200 constitutes an upper plate of the cooling plate 300, and the recess 340 of the cooling plate 300 and the bottom 210a of the module frame 200 may form a flow path for the coolant.

[0073] Specifically, the cooling plate 300 is formed at the bottom of the module frame 200, and may include a lower plate 310 that forms the framework of the cooling plate 300 and is directly joined to the bottom 210a of the module frame 200 by welding or the like, and a recess 340 that is a path through which the coolant flows. In addition, the cooling plate 300 may include a cooling plate protrusion 300p that protrudes from one side of the cooling plate 300 to a portion where the module frame protrusion 500p is located.

[0074] The cooling plate protrusion 300p and the module frame protrusion 500p are directly coupled to each other by a method such as welding.

[0075] The recess 340 of the cooling plate 300 corresponds to a portion of the lower plate 310 that is recessed downward. The recess 340 may be a U-shaped tube in cross section cut vertically on the xy plane based on the direction in which the refrigerant flow path extends, and the bottom 210a may be located on the open upper side of the U-shaped tube. The cooling plate 300 contacts the bottom 210a, and the space between the recess 340 and the bottom 210a becomes an area where the refrigerant flows, i.e., the refrigerant flow path. This allows the bottom 210a of the module frame 200 to come into direct contact with the refrigerant.

[0076] There is no particular limitation on the manufacturing method of the recess 340 of the cooling plate 300, but by providing a recessed structure to the plate-shaped cooling plate 300, a U-shaped recess 340 with an open upper side can be formed.

[0077] The recess 340 may be connected from one of the cooling plate protrusions 300p to the other. Meanwhile, although not shown, a thermally conductive resin layer including a thermal resin may be located between the bottom 210a of the module frame 200 in Fig. 7 and the battery cell stack 120. The thermally conductive resin layer is formed by applying a thermally conductive resin to the bottom 210a and curing the applied thermally conductive resin.

[0078] The thermally conductive resin may include a thermally conductive adhesive material, and specifically may include at least one of a silicone material, a urethane material, and an acrylic material. The thermally conductive resin is liquid when applied, but hardens after application to serve to fix one or more battery cells 110 constituting the battery cell stack 120. In addition, the thermally conductive resin has excellent thermal conductivity, and can quickly transfer heat generated from the battery cells 110 to the underside of the battery module.

[0079] In a conventional battery module, heat generated from the battery cells is transferred to the outside of the battery module through a thermally conductive resin layer, the bottom of the module frame, the heat transfer member, and the coolant of the cooling plate in that order, and the coolant flow path of the cooling plate is located inside the cooling plate.

[0080] In contrast, the battery module 100 according to the present embodiment realizes an integrated cooling structure between the module frame 200 and the cooling plate 300, thereby further improving the cooling performance. The bottom 210a of the module frame 200 plays a role corresponding to the upper plate of the cooling plate 300, thereby realizing the integrated cooling structure. The cooling efficiency is increased by direct cooling, and the structure in which the cooling plate 300 is integrated with the bottom 210a of the module frame 200 can further improve the space utilization rate above the battery module 100 and the battery pack to which the battery module 100 is attached.

[0081] Specifically, heat generated from the battery cells 110 is transferred to the outside of the battery module 100 via a thermally conductive resin layer (not shown) located between the battery cell stack 120 and the bottom 210a, the bottom 210a of the module frame 200, and the refrigerant. By removing unnecessary cooling structures from the past, the heat transfer path is simplified and the air gap between each layer can be reduced, thereby improving cooling efficiency and performance. In particular, since the bottom 210a is formed by the upper plate of the cooling plate 300 and is in direct contact with the refrigerant, there is an advantage in that more direct cooling through the refrigerant is possible.

[0082] In addition, the height of the battery module 100 is reduced by removing unnecessary cooling structures, which can reduce costs and improve space utilization. Furthermore, since the battery modules 100 can be arranged compactly, the capacity and output of a battery pack including a number of battery modules 100 can be increased.

[0083] Meanwhile, the bottom 210a of the module frame 200 is joined by welding to a portion of the lower plate 310 of the cooling plate 300 where the recess 340 is not formed. In this embodiment, the cooling integrated structure of the bottom 210a of the module frame 200 and the cooling plate 300 not only improves the cooling performance as described above, but also supports the load of the battery cell stack 120 housed in the module frame 200 and reinforces the rigidity of the battery module 100. In addition, the lower plate 310 and the bottom 210a of the module frame 200 are sealed by welding or the like, so that the refrigerant can flow without leakage through the recess 340 formed inside the lower plate 310.

[0084] For effective cooling, as shown in Fig. 8, it is preferable that the recess 340 is formed over the entire area corresponding to the bottom 210a of the module frame 200. For this purpose, the recess 340 may be bent at least once to connect from one side to the other. In particular, since the recess 340 is formed over the entire area corresponding to the bottom 210a of the module frame 200, it is preferable that the recess 340 be bent several times. The coolant moves from the start point to the end point of the coolant flow path formed over the entire area corresponding to the bottom 210a of the module frame 200, thereby efficiently cooling the entire area of the battery cell stack 120.

[0085] Meanwhile, the coolant is a medium for cooling and is not particularly limited, but may be cooling water.

[0086] The above-mentioned battery module and the battery pack including the same can be applied to various devices, such as vehicles including electric bicycles, electric cars, and hybrid cars, but the present invention is not limited thereto, and the battery module and the battery pack including the same can be applied to various devices that can use the battery module, and these are also within the scope of the present invention.
