Abstract
Description
[Technical Field]
[0001] [CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS] This patent application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 304,517, filed January 28, 2022, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. [Background technology]
[0002] The outer shell, which consists of a header connector (or the like) with a shielding member, is used to protect the shielded equipment connector. The header connector is a form of electrical connector and may hold at least one metal contact or pin spaced apart at a specific interval. The header connector is mounted on and connected to a shielded equipment connector (such as a main body including terminals, a power assembly, a high voltage and interlock loop (HVIL) assembly, etc.), which in turn may be connected to an electrical device. To protect the shielded equipment connector from external damage, either from physical impact or external contaminants, the shielded equipment connector is shielded and / or sealed with an outer shell, which consists of a header connector (or the like) with a shielding member. The outer shell, which consists of a header connector with a shielding member, may be damaged, for example, by physical impact, or generally no longer protect the shielded equipment connector, for example, during transportation or other circumstances, and the outer shell, including the header connector with a shielding member, must be serviced or replaced.
[0003] When an outer shell, including a header connector with a shielding member, becomes necessary for service or replacement due to physical damage or an inability to protect (i.e., shield or seal) the shielded equipment, it is important and essential that the outer shell—which comprises the header connector with a shielding member—can be easily and efficiently separated, disassembled, or removed from the shielded equipment connector housing (e.g., the main body containing terminals, power assembly, HVIL assembly, etc.). That is, it is important to have available a method for separating, disassembling, or removing a damaged outer shell comprising a header connector with a shielding member, and to be able to easily and efficiently separate, disassemble, and remove a damaged outer shell from the shielded equipment connector housing. That is, it is important that a damaged outer shell of a shielded equipment connector can be easily and effectively separated, disassembled, or removed from the shielded equipment connector housing for service or replacement.
[0004] It is also important that when the outer shell of the shielded device connector is separated, disassembled, or removed from the housing of the shielded device connector for maintenance or repair, the shielded device connector remains connected to the associated or corresponding electrical equipment.
[0005] It is equally important that a repaired outer shell (including a repaired header connector with a shielding member) or a new outer shell (including a new header connector with a shielding member) can be easily and effectively attached, assembled, or reinstalled onto the shielded equipment connector after it has been separated, disassembled, or removed for replacement or maintenance.
[0006] It is also important that when a repaired or replacement outer shell of a shielded device connector is attached, assembled, or reinstalled into the housing of the shielded device connector, the shielded device connector remains connected to the associated or corresponding electrical device. Summary of the Invention [Means for solving the problem]
[0007] The present invention relates to a detachable outer shell for a shielded device connector and a method for disassembling or assembling the same. The outer shell of the present invention preferably comprises a header connector (or the like) equipped with a shielding member. The outer shell protects the shielded device connector (e.g., a body including terminals, a power assembly, a high voltage and interlock loop (HVIL) assembly, etc.) connected to an electrical device. The header connector of the present invention is a form of electrical connector, but may have at least one metal contact or pin spaced apart at a specific interval. The header connector is placed on and connected to the shielded device connector, which in turn preferably remains connected to an associated or corresponding electrical device. The outer shell of the present invention, which comprises a header connector (or the like) equipped with a shielding member, shields or seals the shielded device from external damage, either due to physical impact or external contaminants. The detachable outer shell of the present invention, which comprises a header connector equipped with a shielding member, may be damaged, for example, by physical impact, or generally fail to protect the shielded device connector, for example, during transportation or other circumstances. The removable outer shell of the present invention, including a header connector with a shielding member, can be easily serviced or replaced. That is, in the present invention, if service or replacement of the outer shell, including a header connector with a shielding member, becomes necessary due to physical damage or an inability to protect (i.e., shield or seal) the shielded equipment, the outer shell of the present invention can be easily and efficiently separated, disassembled, or removed from the housing of the shielded equipment connector (e.g., the main body including terminals, power assembly, HVIL assembly, etc.). The present invention further relates to a method for separating, disassembling, or removing a damaged outer shell comprising a header connector with a shielding member from the shielded equipment connector, and to an easy and efficient method for separating, disassembling, or removing a damaged outer shell from the housing of the shielded equipment connector of the present invention. That is, in the event of damage, the outer shell of the present invention can be easily and efficiently separated, disassembled, or removed from the housing of the shielded equipment connector for service or replacement.
[0008] Furthermore, in the present invention, when the outer shell of the shielded device connector is separated, disassembled, or removed from the housing of the shielded device connector for maintenance or repair, the shielded device connector remains connected to the associated or corresponding electrical device.
[0009] Furthermore, in the present invention, after separation, disassembly, or removal for replacement or maintenance, the repaired outer shell (including the repaired header connector with the shielding member) or new outer shell (including the new header connector with the shielding member) in the present invention can be easily and effectively attached, assembled, or reattached to the housing of the shielded device connector.
[0010] Moreover, in the present invention, when a repaired or replacement outer shell of a shielded device connector is attached, assembled, or reinstalled into the housing of the shielded device connector, the shielded device connector remains connected to the associated or corresponding electrical device. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0012] FIG. 1, generally designated by the reference numeral 1, illustrates a detachable outer shell of the present invention. The outer shell 1 comprises a header connector 5 (or the like) with a shielding member 8. The header connector 5 of the present invention takes the form of an electrical connector, but carries at least one metal contact or pin (not shown) spaced apart at a specific interval. The outer shell 1 protects a shielded device connector 10 (such as a body including terminals, a power assembly, a high voltage and interlock loop (HVIL) assembly, etc.) connected to an electrical device 13. FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the outer shell 1 of the present invention for a shielded electrical device 10, in a position where the outer shell 1 is detachable and can be easily and effectively separated, disassembled, or removed from a housing 18 (see FIG. 2A) of the shielded device connector 10, which then preferably remains connected to the electrical device 13.
[0013] The outer shell 1 of the present invention, comprised of the header connector 5 with the shielding member 8, shields or seals the shielded device connector 10 from external damage, either due to physical impact or external contaminants. For example, during transportation or other circumstances, the outer shell 1 of the present invention may be damaged, e.g., by physical impact, or may generally no longer be able to protect the shielded device connector 10; however, the outer shell 1 of the present invention can be easily and effectively serviced or replaced. That is, if the outer shell 1 of the present invention, including the header connector 5 with the shielding member 8, requires service or replacement due to physical damage or an inability to protect (i.e., shield or seal) the shielded device connector 10, the outer shell 1 can be easily and effectively separated, disassembled, or removed from the housing 18 of the shielded device connector 10, while preferably the shielded device connector 10 remains connected to the associated or corresponding electrical device 13. As further illustrated in FIG. 1 , the header connector 5 rests on a platform member 35 attached to the housing 18 of the shielded device connector 10, as described further below.
[0014] As further illustrated in FIG. 1 , if the header connector 5 with the shielding member 8 of the outer shell 1 of the present invention becomes damaged or requires maintenance or repair, the damaged header connector 5 with the shielding member 8 can be easily and effectively separated, disassembled, or removed from the housing of the shielded device connector 10 by loosening the bolts 20 threaded into platforms 35 extending from the housing of the shielded device connector 10, each bolt 20 passing through a corresponding one of the metallic compression limiters 23 fitted into the openings 25 of the base member 30 of the header connector 5 of the outer shell 1.
[0015] 2A is a cross-sectional elevation view taken along the dashed enlarged portion A shown in FIG. 2A , more particularly illustrating a structural arrangement or manner for allowing the detachable outer shell 1 of the present invention for a shielded device connector 10 to be easily and effectively separated, disassembled, or removed from the housing of the shielded device connector 10, which preferably remains connected to an associated or corresponding electrical device 13. As more particularly shown by the dashed enlarged portion in FIG. 2A , the shield member 8 of the header connector 5 includes a latch member 40 having an engaging portion 45 that extends inside the header connector 5, while the housing 18 of the shielded device connector 10 includes another latch member 50 having an engaging portion 55 that extends outside the housing 18.
[0016] 2B , the engaging portion 45 of the latch member 40 of the shield member 8 of the header connector 5 is detachably or removably engaged with the engaging portion 55 of another latch member 50 of the housing 18 of the shielded device connector 10. The latch member 40 is preferably and rigidly fixed to the shield member 8 of the header connector 5 and has a substantially flat extension 48. The other latch member 50 preferably extends a distance away from the housing 18 of the shielded device connector 10 and is flexible or resilient such that the engaging portion 55 of the other latch member 50 is movable such that the substantially flat extension 58 of the engaging portion 55 of the other latch member 50 flexibly or resiliently engages with the substantially flat extension 48 of the latch member 40 of the shield member 8 of the header connector 5. The engaging portion 55 of the other latch member 50 has an upper portion 60 with a downwardly and outwardly sloping upper surface 65.
[0017] 2B , when the engaging portion 45 of the latch member 40 and the engaging portion 55 of the other latch member 50 are engaged with each other, the header connector 5 with the shield 8 of the outer shell 1 becomes engaged with the housing 18 of the shielded device connector 10, while the shielded device connector 10 preferably remains connected to the electrical device 13. If it is desired to disengage the engaging portion of the latch member 40 from the engaging portion 55 of the other latch member 50, a device (e.g., a screwdriver, etc.) can be inserted into the shield member 8 of the header connector 5 and onto the downwardly and outwardly sloping upper surface 65 of the engaging portion 55 of the other latch member 50, as shown by the arrow in FIG. 2B , to move or disengage the substantially flat extension 58 of the engaging portion 55 of the flexible or resilient other latch member 50 away from the substantially flat extension 48 of the engaging portion 45 of the latch member 40. As a result, the engaging portion 55 disengages from the engaging portion 45, allowing the header connector 5 with the shielding member 8 to be subsequently disassembled, removed, or disengaged from the housing 18 of the shielded device connector 10, while the shielded device connector 10 preferably remains connected to the associated electrical device 13.
[0018] The aforementioned ability to disassemble, remove, or disengage the header connector 5 with shielding member 8 from the housing 18 of the shielded device connector 10, while leaving the shielded device connector 10 preferably connected to an associated or corresponding electrical device 13, may be desirable if the outer shell 1 of the present invention, comprising the header connector 5 with shielding member 8, becomes damaged by physical impact, the introduction of external contaminants, or generally no longer provides protection to the housing 18 or the shielded device connector 10 housed therein.
[0019] Upon disengaging the engaging portion 55 of the latch member 50 from the engaging portion 45 of the latch member 40, the outer shell 1, comprising the header connector 5 with the shielding member 8, is disassembled, removed, or disengaged from the housing 18 of the shielded device connector 10, as illustrated in FIG. 3 (see arrow), while the shielded device connector 10 preferably remains connected to the associated electrical device 13. As also shown in FIG. 3, the base member 30 of the header connector 5 of the outer shell 1 is lifted (as shown by the arrow in FIG. 3) and removed from the platform member 35 attached to the housing 18 of the shielded device connector 10. The outer shell 1, including the header connector with the shielding member 8 therein, may then be serviced or repaired.
[0020] After the outer shell 1 including the header connector 5 with the shielding member 8 therein has been serviced, repaired, or replaced, the refurbished, repaired, or new outer housing shell 1, which may also include the refurbished, repaired, replaced, or new header connector 5 therein, and possibly with the refurbished, repaired, replaced, or new shielding member 8, is returned (see arrow in FIG. 4) to be placed onto the housing 18 of the shielded device connector 10, as also shown in FIG. 4, while the shielded device connector 10 preferably remains connected to an associated or corresponding electrical device 13. The refurbished, repaired, replaced, or new outer housing shell 1 is pressed in a direction indicated by the arrow in FIG. 4 toward the platform member 35 attached to the housing of the shielded device connector 10. Then, the engaging portion 45 of the latch member 40 of the shield member 8 first presses inward against the flexible or resilient engaging portion 55 of the latch member 55 of the housing 18 of the shielded device connector 10, and then, during continued downward movement, the substantially flat extension 48 of the engaging portion 45 of the latch member 40 engages with the substantially flat extension 58 of the engaging portion 55 of the flexible or resilient latch member 50 (see also FIG. 2B ), and preferably an audible click is heard, indicating that the latch members 40, 50 are fully engaged. Once the latch members 40, 50 are engaged, the serviced, repaired, replacement, or new outer shell 1 is reattached to the platform member 35 attached to the housing of the shielded device connector 10, as shown in FIG.
[0021] In FIG. 5, when a serviced, repaired, replaced or new outer shell 1 is returned or reinstalled onto the platform 35 attached to the housing 18 of the shielded device connector 10, the bolts 20 are inserted through their respective metal compression limiters 23 and the bolts 20 are each screwed or attached to the platform 35 attached to the housing 18 of the shielded device connector 10, while the shielded device connector 10 remains connected to the associated or corresponding electrical device 13.
[0022] The method of the present invention for disassembling a removable outer shell 1 for a shielded equipment connector 10 is shown in FIG. 6, where in step S1 it is determined that the outer shell 1 of the shielded equipment connector 8 requires maintenance or repair. In step S2, the bolts 20 attaching the outer shell 1 to the shielded equipment connector 10 are unscrewed / loosened and removed (see also FIG. 1). In step S3, the flexible or resilient latches 50 of the housing 18 of the shielded equipment connector 10 are unlocked from the latches 40 of the shielded member 8 of the header connector 5 of the outer shell 1 (see also FIGS. 2A and 2B). Thereafter, in step S4, once the flexible latches 50 of the housing 18 of the shielded equipment connector 10 are unlocked or disconnected from the latches 40 of the shielded member 8 of the header connector 5, the outer shell 1 for the shielded equipment connector 10 is separated or removed from the housing 18 of the shielded equipment connector 10 (see also FIG. 3). The outer shell 1, consisting of the header connector with the shielding member 8, is then serviced or repaired in step S5.
[0023] Steps S1 to S5 described above (and shown in FIG. 6) are preferably performed or occur while the shielded device connector 10 remains connected to the associated electrical device 13.
[0024] 7 illustrates a method for reassembling a removable outer shell 1 for a shielded equipment connector according to the present invention after the outer shell 1 has been serviced, repaired, or replaced in step S5. The serviced, repaired, replaced, or new outer shell 1 for the shielded equipment connector 10 is attached or reinstalled in the housing 18 of the shielded equipment 10 in step S6 (see also FIG. 4). In step S7, the flexible latches 50 of the housing 18 of the shielded equipment connector 10 are locked or engaged with the latches 40 of the shield member 8 of the header connector 5 of the outer housing 1. Thereafter, in step S8, the bolts 20 are placed in the platform members 35 attached to the housing 18 of the shielded equipment connector 10 and tightened, subsequently attaching or reinstalling the outer shell 1 to the shielded equipment connector 10.
[0025] As with the steps (S1 to S5) described above in FIG. 6, the steps described above, steps S5 to S8 (shown in FIG. 7), are preferably performed or occur while the shielded device connector 10 remains connected to the associated or corresponding electrical device 13.
[0026] The present invention is not limited to the above-described embodiment, and various design and configuration changes can be made without departing from the spirit of the present invention.
