1. A method for protecting hair, comprising: (a) applying at least one alkyltriethoxysilane having an alkyl group containing from 8 to 22 carbon atoms to wet or dry hair; (b) applying water adjusted to an acidic pH to the hair; (c) heating the hair; A method comprising:

6. 6. The method according to claim 1, wherein the alkyltriethoxysilane is hydrolyzed and polymerized on the surface of the hair to form a protective film.
7. 7. The method of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein step (b) comprises applying a solution of acetic acid, citric acid, or a buffer system to the hair.
8. 8. The method of any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein step (a) comprises applying a solution containing 5 to 60% by weight of at least one alkyltriethoxysilane in a volatile or non-volatile solvent.
9. A method for protecting hair, comprising: (a) applying to wet or dry hair a mixture comprising at least one alkyltriethoxysilane having an alkyl group containing from 8 to 22 carbon atoms and at least one long chain alkyl or alkenyl succinic anhydride; (b) heating the hair; A method comprising:

15. 15. The method of any one of claims 9 to 14, wherein the mixture contains at least 0.5 wt. % and less than 10 wt. % of the at least one long chain alkyl or alkenyl succinic anhydride, the remainder being the at least one alkyltriethoxysilane.
16. 16. The method of any one of claims 9 to 15, wherein the mixture contains at least 0.5 wt. % and less than 10 wt. % of the at least one long-chain alkyl or alkenyl succinic anhydride, and 5 to 60 wt. % of the at least one alkyltriethoxysilane.
17. A composition comprising at least one alkyltriethoxysilane and at least one long chain alkyl or alkenyl succinic anhydride having an alkyl group containing from 8 to 22 carbon atoms, which when applied to hair and allowed to dry forms a protective, elastic outer layer.
18. The composition of claim 17, wherein the alkyl or alkenyl group of at least one alkyl or alkenyl succinic anhydride contains 8 to 18 carbon atoms.
