Description

[Technical Field]

[0001] This invention relates to a hair treatment composition, and more particularly to an anti-dandruff shampoo composition. [Background technology]

[0002] Dandruff is a problem that affects many parts of the world. This condition manifests as clumps of dead skin cells shedding from the scalp, which are white in color and give an aesthetically unpleasant appearance. One factor contributing to dandruff is certain members of the Malassezia yeast. To combat these yeasts, hair treatment compositions containing various active substances for dandruff prevention have been developed. Piroctone compounds, such as piroctone olamine, are one such active substance.

[0003] A common problem with piroctone compounds is minimizing the deposition of the active substance onto the desired surface during the cleansing process. The desired surface is typically the scalp and / or hair. For example, piroctone compounds such as piroctone olamine are usually soluble in the surfactants of the cleansing phase in hair treatment compositions. During excessive rinsing, most of the piroctone is easily washed away along with the surfactant. Insufficient deposition correlates with low anti-dandruff activity, resulting in little mitigation of the adverse effects of dandruff. To date, attempts have been made to counteract this drawback by increasing the level of piroctone olamine in hair treatment compositions. Such methods introduce various problems, including increased costs, potential instability of the formulation, and potential adverse effects on hair feel. Therefore, it is not a preferred method in the industry.

[0004] German Patent No. 102012203240 describes a hair treatment composition that enhances dandruff prevention and improves hair combability, shine, and elasticity. The composition comprises an anti-dandruff agent selected from zinc pyrithione, crimbazole, octopirox, ketoconazole, selenium disulfide, selenium-containing vegetable oil, selenium-containing vegetable extract, and cationic aminosilicone. Examples include shampoos and conditioners containing Octopirox® (piroctone olamine), aminosilicone, and surfactants.

[0005] U.S. Patent No. 2013 / 0059929 describes a cosmetic or dermatological preparation comprising at least one of benzethonium chloride, methylisothiazolinone, piroctone olamine, and lauroyl ethyl alginate, and free from preservatives containing phenol groups. The preparation exhibits improved sensory properties and sufficient microbiological stability.

[0006] U.S. Patent No. 2002 / 0035161 describes a cosmetic / medical oil-in-water emulsion comprising a discontinuous fatty phase dispersed in a continuous aqueous phase, an effective amount of at least one biologically active substance (A), and an effect amount of an emulsifying system (B), wherein the at least one biologically active substance (A) is insolubilized therein in the form of fine particles, and numerically at least 80% of the fine particles have a diameter in the range of 1 to 10 μm, and numerically at least 50% have a diameter of less than 5 μm.

[0007] Despite all prior art, there remains a need to improve the deposition of piroctone compounds, particularly piroctonic acids or piroctone olamines, on the surface of the scalp and / or hair during the cleansing process. Furthermore, there is still a need to improve this deposition without adverse side effects on sensory perception, formulation rheology, and conditioning performance. [0061] [Examples] The compositions were prepared according to Table 1.

[0062] [Table 1]

[0063] Piroctone olamine deposition was measured by thoroughly wetting 10 clean dark brown European hairpieces with water (2.5g / 6''). Five replicas were tested for each shampoo composition. 0.25g of shampoo was applied to one hairpiece and massaged for 30 seconds. The hairpiece was then rinsed with water for 30 seconds. Another 0.25g of shampoo was applied and massaged for another 30 seconds. The shampoo was then rinsed off with water for 30 seconds. The hairpieces were allowed to air dry. The dried hairpieces were extracted in 50ml of ethanol. Care was taken to avoid exposing the extracts to UV light. The extracts were analyzed for piroctone acid deposition by UPLC. The results are shown in Table 2.

[0064] [Table 2]

[0065] The results in Table 2 demonstrate that the examples of the present invention are more effective than the comparative examples in depositing piroctone olamine.
