FIELD

[0001] The present invention relates to protective footwear that at least partially covers cleats and prevents spikes, lugs, treads, or other protrusions on the cleats from contacting a ground surface.BACKGROUND

[0002] Cleats provide improved traction on a variety of ground surfaces, typically in a sporting context. For instance, cleats provide improved traction for a football player on a grass surface, for a sprinter on a track surface, for a soccer player on a turf surface, etc. Cleats are also utilized in non-sporting contexts such as by an arborist when climbing a tree or by a hiker when climbing an ice-covered mountain. Cleats provide improved traction with protrusions—such as spikes, lugs, treads, etc.—that extend downwardly from the sole of each cleat and into the ground surface. Depending on the application, these protrusions can have a variety of shapes and be constructed from a variety of materials such as plastic, rubber, or metal.

[0003] One drawback of cleats is when the cleats are worn by a user, but the user must move across a ground surface not intended to be traversed by the cleats. For example, an athlete puts on cleats to play a sport on a grass surface but first must walk across a concrete surface in a locker room. With the protrusions of the cleats not sinking into a grass surface, the cleats and the athlete are elevated above the concrete surface. Moreover, with fewer points of contact between the cleats and the concrete surface, the athlete is more likely to slip on the concrete surface. Athletes also often have an extensive lacing process or equipment-donning process, as in American football or lacrosse, that is impractical or impossible to accomplish on the field of play. Therefore, athletes may have increase risk of injury when wearing cleats over a surface like concrete, asphalt, or any surface on which cleat is not intended to be worn. this may require the athlete to move gingerly or with an awkward gait, when instead the athlete should be preparing mentally and physically for the sporting event.

[0004] As a result, the athlete is at a higher risk of injury. With the elevated position of the cleat and athlete, the athlete is more prone to roll his or her ankle. Further, with the more slippery engagement with a surface like concrete, the athlete is simply more likely to fall in an uncontrolled manner, which can lead to a variety of injuries, including concussions, and may result in missing time from the sporting event. Further still, there is a risk of damaging the cleat itself including the protrusions when wearing the cleat on an unintended surface. A damaged cleat can compromise the ability of the athlete to gain traction, diminishing the performance of the athlete, and this damage can necessitate the purchase of a new cleat. Moreover, for a material like metal, wearing cleats on a surface like concrete can introduce burrs or sharp projections that can damage other surfaces and injure other athletes, among a variety of negative consequences. Accordingly, a cost-effective system, device, and method that can protect the cleat and the athlete while traversing unintended surfaces is desirable.SUMMARY

[0005] Embodiments of the present disclosure address these and other shortcomings of the prior art systems. The protective footwear of the present disclosure selectively joins to and at least partially covers a cleat to protect the protrusions of the cleat, while separating the protrusions from an unintended ground surface. The protective footwear allows an athlete or other person to walk across the unintended ground surface more safely, naturally, athletically, and with more traction.

[0006] It is one aspect of the present disclosure to provide protective footwear that comprises a strap system that selectively, quickly, and easily fastens the protective footwear to a cleat. As noted herein, athletes often wear extensive equipment for a sport. For instance, an athlete may be physically restricted by pads, gloves, athletic tape, etc., and time is limited once equipment is donned. Therefore, any additional gear must be equipped easily and quickly. The strap system may comprise a first strap portion with a first fastener and a second strap portion with a second fastener. The first and second fasteners may be hook and loop materials, respectively, so that an athlete wearing a cleat simply steps downward into the protective footwear and then pushes the first fastener into the second fastener to complete the strap system and join the protective footwear to the cleat.

[0007] A cleat may come in varying thickness around a circumference of the foot, and the use of tape or other material can further vary the dimensions of the cleat. Thus, the strap portions are long enough to extend around varying sizes of cleat. Furthermore, the strap system can have an expansion section that stretches to a longer length when the protective footwear is joined to a foot, and an even longer length when joined to a cleat to accommodate a wide range of cleat sizes, cleats with tape, etc.

[0008] It is another aspect of the present disclosure to provide protective footwear with an outer sole that contacts a ground surface and with a more pliable inner sole that is affixed to the outer sole and that engages the protrusions and / or outer sole of the cleat. Protrusions such as spikes, lugs, and treads come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and patterns. With a pliable material, the inner sole conforms to any size, shape, and pattern of protrusions. The pliable inner sole deforms as the athlete presses the cleat into the inner sole. This holds the protective footwear securely to the cleat and allows the athlete to walk naturally over any surface. Once the user removes the protective footwear from the cleat, the pliable inner sole returns to an original position.

[0009] It is an aspect of the present disclosure to provide features that distinguish protective footwear of one athlete from protective footwear of other athletes. The distinguishing features can include team colors, logos, numbers, letters, words, and / or symbols, that can be affixed to the strap system, the inner sole, and / or the outer sole of the protective footwear. The affixation can be selective to allow, for instance, an athlete to change his or her number at a future time. These distinguishing features allow an athlete to leave the protective footwear in a locker room or field of play and then quickly identify and retrieve the protective footwear at a later time.

[0010] It is another aspect of the present disclosure to provide protective footwear that can be worn without a cleat, like a slide type of footwear. The strap system described herein accommodates cleats of varying sizes and also accommodates the smaller size of a foot without any cleat. The fasteners can extend about a sufficient area of the strap portions to provide this flexibility. Moreover, the expansion sections described herein can stretch less or not at all when the protective footwear is used without cleats. The additional use of the protective footwear saves money as an athlete does not need to buy multiple footwear, i.e., protective footwear and separate slide footwear.

[0011] It is a further aspect of the present disclosure to provide protective footwear that has one or more compartments to provide additional features and functionality to the protective footwear. For instance, the compartment can be positioned in the more rigid outer sole of the protective footwear, and the compartment is accessed from the sides, top, or bottom of the outer sole. In some embodiments, the inner sole is selectively attached to the outer sole, and access to the compartment is from the top of the outer sole. The attachment between the inner and outer soles can be a snap fastener, a hook and loop fastener, a buckle, an adhesive, etc.

Like a baseball player that warms up with weight on the end of the bat, an athlete can load weights into the protective footwear so that once the protective footwear is removed, the athlete feels lighter and faster. Thus, with weight loaded in the forward compartment, the protective footwear trains the athlete to move on his or her toes, rather than heel strike. The one or more compartments can also be filled with other items of significance. For example, material of religious significance like sand from the Sea of Galilee or Bethlehem can be placed in a compartment so that the athlete walks with God and / or Jesus. These functions and compartments can be mixed and matched to provide multiple benefits.

In this example, the distinguishing feature is held in place due to its surface area being larger than the recessed distinguishing area 34. It will be appreciated that the distinguishing feature can be made of rubber material and / or other materials such that the distinguishing feature serves as a weight, incurring benefits as described elsewhere herein. [0054] FIG. 3 shows another example of a protective footwear 2. Here, the protective footwear 2 comprises an outer sole 4, an inner sole 6, and a strap system 8. The protective footwear 2 also has a compartment 36 positioned between the soles 4, 6. In this embodiment, a weight 38 is positioned in the compartment 36. However, other objects, including those described herein, can also be place in the compartment 36 and / or in other compartments in the protective footwear 2. Other objects that may be positioned in compartment 36 include, but are not limited to, a heating feature and a cooling feature. In some embodiments, the heating feature may have a resistive heating element and a power supply. In some embodiments, the cooling feature may be a cooling gel. It will be appreciated that the present disclosure encompasses embodiments where a compartment is positioned in the outer sole 4 or the inner sole 6. In some embodiments, there is an attachment between the inner sole 6 and the outer sole 4 to access the compartment 36. The attachment may be a snap fastener, a hook and loop fastener, an adhesive, or a buckle.

[0055] In the embodiment shown in FIG. 3, the strap system 8 in the protective footwear 2 is a single structure that is joined to the outer sole 4, and then the inner sole 6 is joined to the strap system 8 and to the outer sole 4. One end of the single structure can be described as the first strap portion 16 and the opposing end can be described as the second strap portion 18 where each strap portion 16, 18 has a fastener, as described herein. Claims

1. A protective footwear, comprising:an outer sole and an inner sole affixed on the outer sole, wherein the inner sole is more pliable than the outer sole; anda strap system extending upwardly from the outer sole to selectively secure the protective footwear to one of a cleat or a foot.

2. The protective footwear of claim 1, wherein the strap system comprises:a first strap portion having a first fastener; anda second strap portion having a second fastener, wherein the first and second fasteners selectively join to secure the protective footwear to one of the cleat or the foot.

3. The protective footwear of claim 1, wherein the strap system is a continuous loop.

4. The protective footwear of claim 2, wherein the first fastener is a hook fastener and the second fastener is a loop fastener.

5. The protective footwear of claim 1, wherein the strap system comprises an expansion section operable to that stretch to an expanded size and compress back to an original size.

6. The protective footwear of claim 5, wherein the original size is between 5 and 25 mm.

7. The protective footwear of claim 1, wherein the inner sole comprises a foam material and the outer sole comprises a rubber material.

8. The protective footwear of claim 1, wherein the strap system comprises a distinguishing area to receive a distinguishing feature.

9. The protective footwear of claim 8, wherein the distinguishing feature is one of a number, a color, a letter, a word, a symbol, or a logo.

10. The protective footwear of claim 8, wherein the distinguishing area is rectangular and the distinguishing feature is card-shaped.

11. The protective footwear of claim 8, wherein the distinguishing feature and the distinguishing area are attached by a hook and loop fastener.

12. The protective footwear of claim 1, wherein the outer sole further comprises at least one compartment.

13. The protective footwear of claim 12, further comprising one of a weight, a heating feature, or a cooling feature positioned in the at least one compartment.

14. The protective footwear of claim 12, wherein the heating feature has a resistive heating element and a power supply.

15. The protective footwear of claim 12, wherein the cooling feature is a cooling gel.

16. The protective footwear of claim 12, wherein the at least one compartment is located in a forward portion of the outer sole.

17. The protective footwear of claim 1, wherein the inner sole extends above a top surface of the outer sole.

18. The protective footwear of claim 1, wherein a width of the outer sole at a back end is between 65% and 85% of a width of the outer sole at a front end.

19. The protective footwear of claim 18, wherein the width of the outer sole at the back end is 80% of the width of the outer sole at the front end.

20. The protective footwear of claim 1, wherein the outer sole comprises one or more slits operable to form traction with a surface.
