Description

Method for controlling charging and discharging of an energy storage device in response to peak power detection and device therefor

[0001] The present invention relates to a method for controlling the charging and discharging of an energy storage device in response to peak power detection, and a device therefor. The research of the present invention is related to the "Development of Modular Power Quality Control Technology for Large-Capacity Wind Power (No. 20203030020200)" project, a core technology development (R&D) project for new and renewable energy, supported by the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP) with funding from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

[0002] The content described in this section merely provides background information for the present embodiment and does not constitute prior art.

[0003] ESS is a device that stores surplus electricity or supplies electricity produced using renewable energy when needed. It stores idle electricity during times of low demand and supplies it during times of high demand, allowing for stable use of electricity.

[0004] This ESS is a core technology essential for building renewable energy systems and smart grids that have recently emerged. Instead of directly transmitting electricity produced at power plants to homes or factories, it stores energy in energy storage devices such as large secondary batteries, and then generates and transmits electricity when and where it is most needed, thereby increasing energy efficiency.

[0005] Typically, ESS batteries can increase energy efficiency by storing electricity and supplying charged electricity when needed. This requires predicting electricity demand and accurately establishing an efficient battery charging and discharging schedule accordingly.

[0006] Since the peak of electricity is an important factor in calculating electricity rates, it is necessary to research and develop a technology that can accurately predict the occurrence of peaks in the electricity provided from the power grid among the electricity used by the power supply device and charge or discharge the ESS that provides electricity to the power supply device based on the occurrence of peaks.

[0057] Hereinafter, with reference to the attached drawings, various embodiments of a method for controlling charging and discharging of an energy storage device in response to peak power detection according to the present invention and a device therefor (hereinafter referred to as a method and device for controlling charging and discharging of an energy storage device in response to peak power) will be described in detail.

[0058] FIG. 1 is a drawing for explaining the configuration of a renewable energy-based power supply system according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0059] A renewable energy-based power supply system (10) may include a charge / discharge control device (100) of an energy storage device corresponding to peak power, a power system (200), a power supply device (300), an energy storage device (400), a renewable energy power generation device (500), and a renewable energy-based power supply system management device (hereinafter, referred to as a power supply system management device) (600).

[0060] A charge / discharge control device (100) of an energy storage device corresponding to peak power determines whether the amount of power flowing in from the power system corresponds to a peak state based on a peak state determination function that uses a predetermined peak power amount as a variable, and if it corresponds to a peak state, controls the energy storage device to discharge in response to the discharge amount calculated through a discharge amount calculation function that uses the amount of power flowing in from the power system as a variable.

[0061] Here, the predetermined peak power amount may refer to the maximum allowable power demand. For example, the predetermined peak power amount may be determined based on a time period when power demand generally increases, or a time period when operating power in a work environment or factory increases. In the present invention, it may be determined based on a time period when charging demand for external devices increases. The predetermined peak power amount may be set based on historical data, expected demand, infrastructure capacity, and other factors. In the present invention, the predetermined peak power amount may be determined using methods such as moving averages, time series analysis, machine learning, or real-time monitoring.

[0062] The charge / discharge control device (100) of the energy storage device corresponding to peak power is described in more detail with reference to FIGS. 2, 3, 6 to 11.

[0063] A power system (200) can supply power to a power supply unit (300). The power system (200) can refer to the entire infrastructure that transmits electrical energy from a power plant to end users. For example, the power system can include power plants, voltage step-up and step-down transformers, and transmission and distribution networks used to transmit power to end users. Power users that receive power from the power system (200) can be homes, offices, factories, etc.

[0064] Information on the rates paid for electricity supplied from the power grid can be divided into rates based on electricity demand, rates for the light-load period, rates for the heavy-load period where higher rates are applied than for the light-load period, and rates for the peak-load period where higher rates are applied than for the heavy-load period.

[0065] The power supply device (300) can receive power from at least one of a power system (200), an energy storage device (400), or a renewable energy generation device (500) and supply power to an external device.

[0066] The power supply unit (300) and external devices are described in more detail with reference to FIG. 4.

[0067] The energy storage device (400) can store power provided from a renewable energy generation device (500). The energy storage device (400) can also store power provided from a power system (200). The energy storage device (400) can temporarily store power and provide it for use when needed. The energy storage device (400) can supply power to the power supply device (300) in response to power shortages, power overloads, or peak power demand situations.

[0068] The energy storage device (400) may be an Energy Storage System (ESS). The ESS may include components necessary for storing and supplying energy (e.g., management and control software, safety devices, connection devices, etc.).

[0069] A renewable energy generation device (500) may be a device that generates electricity using sustainable resources. For example, the renewable energy generation device (500) may generate electricity using wind or solar power.

[0070] The renewable energy power generation device (500) is described in more detail with reference to FIG. 5.

[0071] The power system (200), energy storage device (400), or renewable energy generation device (500) can be operated by being connected to an MCCB (Molded Case Circuit Breaker) or a VCB (Vacuum Circuit Breaker), respectively.

[0072] The power supply system management device (600) can check whether a reverse current has occurred in which power is supplied from an energy storage device (400) or a renewable energy generation device (500) to a power system (200), detect the power usage of the power supply device (300), and control the operation of at least one of the energy storage device (400) or the renewable energy generation device (500) based on a group of operation control variables including the occurrence of a reverse current or the power usage.

[0073] In the present invention, reverse current may mean that power is not supplied from the power system (200) to the power supply device (300) or the energy storage device (400), but rather that power is supplied from the energy storage device (400) or the renewable energy generation device (500) to the power system (200).

[0074] The power supply system management device (600) can determine whether a preset period of time is required for the power supply device to preferentially use power supplied from the power grid over power supplied from a renewable energy generation device.

[0075] The action control variable group may further include information on whether the action controlling step is performed within a preset period of time.

[0076] The group of motion control variables may further include information about whether the external device is in a charging state, receiving power from the power supply.

[0077] The power supply system management device (600) can turn off the operation of the renewable energy generation device, regardless of whether the external device is in a charging state receiving power from the power supply device, when the operation controlling step is performed within a preset period of time in the operation controlling step.

[0078] The power supply system management device (600) can determine whether a peak has occurred by comparing the power usage of the power supply device with a preset reference power at the step of detecting the power usage of the power supply device.

[0079] The group of motion control variables may further include whether a peak occurs or not.

[0080] The power supply system management device (600) can turn off charging of the energy storage device when a peak occurs in the step of controlling the operation, regardless of whether the step of controlling the operation is performed within a preset period or whether the external device is in a charging state receiving power from the power supply device.

[0081] The power supply system management device (600) can turn off the energy storage device from performing discharge or turn off the operation of the renewable energy generation device, regardless of whether a reverse current occurs, whether a peak occurs, whether the operation control step is performed within a preset period, or whether the external device is in a charging state receiving power from the power supply device, in the step of controlling the operation.

[0082] The group of operation control variables may include at least one of information about whether the renewable energy generation device is operating, a comparison result between the amount of power used by an external device to charge using the power supply and the amount of power produced by the renewable energy generation device, the State of Charge (SOC) of the energy storage device, a preset target SOC of the energy storage device, a preset maximum SOC of the energy storage device, a preset minimum SOC of the energy storage device, whether the operation control step is performed on a weekday, or a rate paid for power supplied from the power grid.

[0083] Here, the preset period may refer to a period concluded by a contract between a power user (the power supply system or power supply system management device operator in the present invention) and a supplier (the power system operator). The contract between the power user and the power supplier may include information on the preset period, application date, application time, contract capacity, power usage, or peak power. Here, the contract may be a DR (Demand Response) contract.

[0084] The maximum SOC of an energy storage device can be set to ensure safe battery operation, prevent overcharging, and extend battery life. The maximum SOC of an energy storage device can be determined within the range of 80-90% of the maximum charge that can be stored in the battery, but is not necessarily limited to this range. It can also be set differently, taking into account factors such as energy usage and peak power demand.

[0085] The minimum SOC of an energy storage device can be set to prevent battery overdischarge, prevent performance degradation, and ensure safe operation. The minimum SOC of an energy storage device can be determined within the range of 20-30% of the maximum charge that can be stored in the battery, but is not necessarily limited to this range. It can also be set differently, taking into account factors such as energy usage and peak power demand.

[0086] The target SOC of an energy storage device can be set based on the system's operational objectives. For example, if the energy storage device is to supply power during peak hours, the target SOC may be to charge the energy storage device to its maximum SOC. Furthermore, the target SOC may vary depending on factors such as maintaining reserve capacity or meeting specific power demand requirements. The target SOC may also vary depending on factors such as the day of the week, season, time of day, weather, power demand forecast, and whether the load falls within a light, medium, or peak load rate bracket.

[0087] Not all of the components illustrated in FIG. 1 are essential components of the renewable energy-based power supply system (10), and in other embodiments, some components connected to the renewable energy-based power supply system (10) may be added, changed, or deleted.

The input / output devices (not shown) may be connected to other components of the charge / discharge control device (100) of the energy storage device corresponding to peak power via the input / output interfaces (130).

[0094] The artificial intelligence-based processing unit (160) may perform operations necessary for a charging / discharging control method of an energy storage device corresponding to peak power in conjunction with the processor (110). For example, the artificial intelligence processing unit (160) may perform operations related to artificial intelligence in conjunction with the processor (110) while the processor (110) performs operations necessary for a charging / discharging control method of an energy storage device corresponding to peak power.

[0095] For example, the AI-based processing unit (160) can analyze and predict peak power patterns using AI algorithms. This can improve the peak state determination function and more accurately determine whether the amount of power flowing into the power system corresponds to a peak state. Furthermore, the AI-based processing unit (160) can optimize the charging and discharging of energy storage devices using AI. By analyzing energy demand and supply patterns, the charging and discharging strategy can be dynamically adjusted, thereby improving the lifespan and efficiency of the energy storage device.

[0096] FIG. 3 is a flowchart for explaining a charging / discharging control method of an energy storage device corresponding to peak power according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0097] A method for controlling charging and discharging of an energy storage device in response to peak power can be performed in a renewable energy-based power supply system management device including a memory storing one or more programs for detecting peak power and controlling charging or discharging of an energy storage device, and one or more processors performing operations according to one or more programs.

[0098] At step S310, the processor can determine whether the amount of power flowing in from the power system corresponds to a peak state based on a peak state determination function that uses a predetermined peak power amount as a variable.

[0099] In the step (S310) of determining whether the processor is in a peak state, if the amount of power flowing in from the power system after the preset cycle starts is greater than the peak state determination function, the processor can determine that the processor is in a peak state.

[0100] In the step (S310) of determining whether the processor corresponds to a peak state, the processor can measure the amount of power flowing in from the power system for a predetermined first time within a preset cycle, and determine whether the processor corresponds to a peak state after the predetermined first time has elapsed.

[0101] At step S320, when the processor corresponds to a peak state, the energy storage device can be controlled to discharge in response to the discharge amount calculated through a discharge amount calculation function that uses the amount of power flowing in from the power system as a variable.

[0102] In the step (S320) of controlling the energy storage device to discharge, the processor can control the energy storage device to stop discharging whenever a preset cycle ends.

[0103] FIG. 4 is a drawing for explaining a power supply device of a renewable energy-based power supply system according to one embodiment of the present invention and an external device that receives power from the power supply device.

[0104] An external device (410) that receives power from a power supply may be a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) or an electric vehicle (EV) that removes the engine and supplies power only with a motor.

[0105] PHEVs and EVs use externally supplied power to charge a high-voltage battery installed inside the vehicle, and supply power to the drive motor for driving the vehicle by controlling the discharge of the power charged in the high-voltage battery.

[0106] Referring to FIG. 4, the external device (410) is illustrated in the form of a PHEV or EV, but the present invention is not limited thereto, and may be various types of devices that are designed to charge a battery installed inside a device such as a smartphone, laptop, tablet, smart watch, e-cigarette, portable speaker, electric kickboard, electric bicycle, or drone.

[0107] FIG. 5 is a drawing for explaining an eco-friendly energy generation device and a configuration of an eco-friendly energy generation device of a renewable energy-based power supply system according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0108] Referring to FIG. 5, the eco-friendly energy generation device (500) may include at least one of a solar panel (510), a wind turbine (520), a hydraulic turbine (530), or an ocean energy generation device (540).

[0109] A solar panel (510) can directly convert solar energy into electrical energy. The solar panel (510) can be installed on a roof, on the exterior wall of a building, or in a large-scale solar power plant.

[0110] A wind turbine (520) may be a large turbine that generates electricity by utilizing wind energy. The wind turbine (520) may include blades, a rotating shaft, a generator, a turbine tower, and a blade adjustment device.

[0111] A hydraulic turbine (530) can generate electricity by utilizing the flow or fall of water.

[0112] An ocean energy generation device (540) can generate electricity by utilizing the movement of the sea, such as waves, tides, and ocean currents.

[0113] Not all of the components illustrated in FIG. 5 are essential components of the eco-friendly energy generation device (500), and some components connected to the eco-friendly energy generation device (500) in other embodiments may be added, changed, or deleted.

[0114] For example, an eco-friendly energy generation device (500) may further include a geothermal power generation device or a biomass power generation device. A geothermal power generation device can generate electricity by utilizing heat within the Earth. A biomass power generation device can generate electricity by combusting or gasifying biological materials.

[0115] FIG. 6 is a graph showing a peak state judgment function and a discharge amount calculation support function used in a charging / discharging control device and method of an energy storage device corresponding to peak power according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0116] Drawing symbol 610 of Fig. 6 represents a peak state judgment function. Drawing symbol 630 represents a preset cycle (900 seconds).

[0117] The peak state judgment function can use at least one of a predetermined peak power amount, a preset period, or the elapsed time since the preset period started as a variable.

[0118] For example, the peak state judgment function may be the sum of a first value obtained by multiplying a predetermined peak power amount divided by a predetermined period by the time elapsed since the predetermined period began, and a second value obtained by multiplying a predetermined peak power amount by an adjustment value less than 1.

[0119] The peak state judgment function can be expressed as in mathematical equation 1.

[0120]

[0121] Here, Limit curve2 represents the peak state judgment function, and t can represent the time elapsed since the preset cycle begins. The adjustment value can be determined within the range of 0.03 to 0.07.

[0122] The adjustment value can be determined so that the peak state judgment function has a value greater than the discharge amount calculation support function. The adjustment value can be a value greater than 0.

[0123] The peak state judgment function may be limited to a function value equal to a size corresponding to a predetermined peak power amount if the size of the peak state judgment function is greater than a predetermined peak power amount.

[0124] The discharge amount calculation function can use the amount of power flowing in from the power system and the discharge amount calculation support function as variables.

[0125] The discharge amount calculation support function can use a predetermined peak power amount or a preset cycle as a variable.

[0126] Drawing symbol 620 of Fig. 6 represents a discharge amount calculation support function.

[0127] The discharge amount calculation support function can be expressed as in mathematical expression 2.

[0128]

[0129] Here, Limit curve 1 represents a discharge amount calculation support function, and t can represent the time elapsed since the preset cycle starts.

[0130] The discharge amount calculation function may be set to a function value equal to the size of the rated voltage of the energy storage device when a predetermined second time has elapsed within a predetermined period and the amount of power flowing in from the power system is greater than a predetermined peak power amount.

[0131] The predetermined second time may have a greater value than the predetermined first time.

[0132] In the present invention, the predetermined first time or the predetermined second time may be determined by factors such as user settings, system limitations, or power usage patterns, respectively.

[0133] The emission calculation function can be expressed as in mathematical equation 3.

[0134]

[0135] Here, Pess_ref can represent the discharge amount. The unit conversion constant can be a constant for adjusting the unit so that the calculated discharge amount is calculated in KW when the unit of the power amount flowing in from the power system and the discharge amount calculation support function are input in Wh instead of KWh and the preset cycle is input in sec (seconds). For example, since Pess_ref = ([Wh]-[Wh]) / [s] = [Wh] / [s] = 3.6[kW], the unit conversion constant can be 3.6.

[0136] The discharge output function may have a value smaller than the rated voltage of the energy storage device.

[0137] The emission calculation function may have a value less than the charging power used by an external device powered by the energy storage device minus the supply power provided by the renewable energy generation device that supplies power to the energy storage device.

[0138] The emission output function can have values greater than 0.

[0139] FIGS. 7 to 9 are diagrams exemplarily showing time-to-power graphs according to the operation of a charging / discharging control device and method of an energy storage device corresponding to peak power according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0140] In the present invention, the processor performs operations at preset cycle intervals, and at the end of each cycle, controls the energy storage device to stop discharging and initializes all parameters.

[0141] The "preset cycle" can be determined by the system operator or user, and may be determined based on factors such as the system operating environment or the characteristics of the energy storage device. For example, if the power grid is highly volatile and peak power conditions occur frequently, a short cycle can be set to quickly detect and respond to peak conditions. Conversely, if the power grid is less volatile and peak conditions occur infrequently, a long cycle can be set to more efficiently manage the charging and discharging of the energy storage device.

[0142] Figures 7 to 9 are examples of a case where the preset period is set to 900 seconds, the predetermined first time is set to 300 seconds, and the predetermined second time is set to 600 seconds.

[0143] The processor measures power usage for a first predetermined time period, and thereafter performs operations related to peak judgment or energy storage device control. The processor may determine a peak state if, after the first predetermined time period has elapsed, the amount of power (SkWh) flowing in from the power system exceeds a peak state judgment function (Limit curve2).

[0144] The amount of power (SkWh) flowing into the power grid can mean the amount of power flowing into the power grid since the start of a preset cycle.

[0145] In Figures 7 to 9, the peak state judgment function is calculated by the following equation.

[0146] Limit curve2 = Peak_kwh / (900) * t + Peak_kwh * 0.05

[0147] Here, "Peak_kwh" is a predetermined peak power amount, which represents the peak power amount during a preset period, and "t" can represent the time (in seconds) from the start of the 15-minute period to the present.

[0148] If "Limit curve2" is greater than "Peak_kwh", "Limit curve2" can be limited to "Peak_kwh".

[0149] The processor can issue a discharge command to the energy storage device when a preset period of time has elapsed and SkWh exceeds the "Limit curve2".

[0150] In Figures 7 to 9, the discharge amount (Pess_ref) is calculated by the following equation.

[0151] Pess_ref[kW] = 3.6*((Skwh - Limit curve1) / (900 - t))

[0152] Here, “Limit curve1 (emission calculation support function)” is calculated by “Limit curve1 = Peak_kwh / (900)t”.

[0153] After a predetermined second time has elapsed and SkWh is greater than Peak_kwh, Pess_ref = Pess_rate can be set.

[0154] Pess_rate may be the rated capacity of an energy storage device. For example, Pess_rate may refer to the rated capacity of an Energy Storage System Power Conditioning System (ESSPCS). An ESSPCS may be a device that controls the power flow between the battery and the grid in an energy storage system.

[0155] Limits for Peak command may include at least one of Pess_ref < Pev-Ppv, Pess_ref < Pess_rate, or Pess_ref > 0.

[0156] In the simulations of FIGS. 7 to 9, the rated capacity of the ESSPCS is 460 kW, the power supplied to the external device (EV) from the power supply is 600 kW, and the Peak_kwh is 125 kWh.

[0157] First, referring to Figure 7, at 230 sec, Skwh exceeds Limit_curve2 but is less than or equal to 300, so Pess_ref=0, and at 300 sec, Skwh exceeds Limit_curve2 and Pess output begins. After 840 sec, the previous value is maintained.

[0158] If the peak is not controlled, it can rise to 150 kWh as shown in Fig. 8.

[0159] Referring to Fig. 9, at 230 sec, Skwh exceeds Limit_curve2 but is less than or equal to 300, so Pess_ref=0. At 300 sec, Skwh exceeds Limit_curve2 and Pess output begins. At 680 sec, Skwh becomes lower than Limit_curve1, so Pess=0.
