The present invention also relates to process for preparing the said composition and its use as herbicide.
[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0005] Background description includes information that may be useful in understanding the present invention. It is not an admission that any of the information provided herein is prior art or relevant to the present invention, or that any publication specifically or implicitly referenced is prior art.
[0006] Herbicides are pesticides useful for killing or controlling unwanted plants / weeds. The agriculture industry uses a wide range of herbicides, primarily to control undesired growth of weeds which interfere with growth, development, yield and quality of agricultural crops. They are used to provide an optimum environment for growth and propagation of plant varieties. Modern herbicides are used to either control or suppress these undesirable plants so as to allow sown crops a greater share of nutrient.
[0007] The control of undesired vegetation is extremely important in achieving high crop efficiency, yield and growth. Unchecked weed growth in useful crops can cause significant reduction in productivity and thereby result in increased costs to the consumer. The control of undesired vegetation in non-crop areas is also important.
[0008] Weeds are undesirable plants that can severely damage yield in crops. Farmers usually control these plants at the pre-plant stage as well as after sowing. The weeds can reduce field crop yields by competing for water, sunlight and nutrients. Profitable crop production depends on effective weed control.
[0009] So, there exists a continuous need to develop an herbicidal composition which is compatible and stable, synergistic, broad spectrum, environmentally safe and more effective in control of various types of weeds in crops in all stages of weed growth. Also, it is economically very important to control of weeds or unwanted for the crop productivity. Researchers in the field of synthetic chemistry have produced an extensive variety of chemicals and chemical formulations as solo or in combination of active ingredients for the control of such weeds or unwanted plants. Formulation of chemical herbicides of many types have been disclosed in the literature. In order to minimize the risk from increased number of herbicide resistant varieties of weeds, mixtures of different active compounds are nowadays employed for controlling weeds or unwanted plants as known in art. By combining different active compounds having different mechanisms of action, it is possible to ensure successful control of weeds over a relatively longer period of time and preventing development of resistance. But this requires continuous development of an effective composition with different active ingredients.
[0010] However, there still exists a scope for research and development of novel formulations, compositions for weed control, which are environmentally safe, cost-effective and which can be used for protection of crops during the critical periods of cultivation capable of acting both on the narrow-leaved and broad-leaved weeds, grasses and sedges and effective during all the stages of weed life cycle. The control of undesired vegetation is extremely important in achieving high crop efficiency. Achievement of selective control of the growth of weeds especially in such useful crops as rice, soybean, ground nut, cotton, sugar beet, corn (maize), potato, wheat, barley, tomato and plantation crops such as sugarcane, among others, is very desirable. Unchecked weed growth in such useful crops can cause significant reduction in productivity and thereby result in increased costs to the consumer. Many products are commercially available for these purposes, but the need continues for new products that are more effective, synergistic, less costly, less toxic, environmentally safer or have different modes of action and not resistant to weeds.
[0011] More so, a wide range of herbicide compositions contain only a single active ingredient and cannot contain two or more active ingredients due to several reasons like adverse reactions, non-synergistic effects, non-compatibility of intermixed ingredients etc. However, the combinations currently known are not sufficient to control the resistant and persistent weeds. Growers, increasingly face complex weed situations that may not be controlled with just one herbicide.
[0012] Further, a majority of the commercially available chemical herbicides are selective in their action. A common problem with selective herbicides is its weed control spectrum, meaning the range of weed species effectively controlled by the herbicide, does not cover the full diversity of weeds affecting the crop and are not broad spectrum in nature. It is therefore, a practice to apply two or more herbicides simultaneously in order to achieve maximum spectrum of control. But it requires a lot of human ingenuity and rigorous efforts to identify compatibility between the active ingredients and the specific ratios in which these components must be mixed so as to obtain the maximum desired results. However, a common problem with selective herbicides is its weed control spectrum, meaning the range of weed species effectively controlled by the herbicide, does not cover the full diversity of weeds affecting the crop and are not broad spectrum in nature.
[0013] Combinations of herbicides are used to control a broader range of weeds. However, the combination of herbicides may not always result in the desired effect. Combination of herbicides may lead to an additive effect or an antagonistic effect. It may also result in phytotoxicity to the crops making it an undesirable combination. Agronomists must therefore, carefully select the herbicides that can be combined to offer a synergistic effect that would control weeds while having no phytotoxic effect on the crop, and reduce the chances of development of herbicide resistant weeds. Thus, there still remains a need for improved herbicidal combinations that can effectively control weeds thereby improving yield and plant health, with reduced phytotoxicity and have synergistic effect in terms of weed control.
[0014] Also, it is always preferable to be able to reduce the amount of chemical agents released into the environment while still ensuring effective weed control. Combinations of herbicides are typically used to broaden the spectrum of weed control, to minimize the doses of chemicals used, and to retard resistance development. Although weed control agent combinations have been studied, a high synergistic action has not always been found. There is however a need for improvement of these combinations. Single active compositions used over a long period of time has resulted in resistance. With the onset of resistance to certain weeds, there is a need in the art for a combination of actives that decrease the chances of resistance against weeds. Herbicide performance is affected by numerous environmental factors, including sunlight, temperature, water stresses and quality.
[0015] Herbicidal compositions that can be applied at low dosage as possible and be effective in controlling weeds while causing as little harm as possible to the environment are in demand by the farming community. Weeds are very destructive to crops and can result in significant loss of crop yield and quality, which results in economic loss to the farmer and increased cost to the end user. Although, many combinations of herbicidal agents have been studied, a synergistic effect is rarely attained. Therefore, there is still a need for novel herbicidal composition comprising combination of herbicides which have different chemistry but are broad spectrum to cover efficacious control of large number of weeds, which also exhibits synergistically enhanced action, a broader scope of activity at a reduced cost of treatment.
[0016] Another common problem with many commercially available herbicides is the narrow window of application. Most of them provide either a pre-emergence or a post-emergence weeds control. An effective weed control can be achieved by usage of herbicides appropriately, which can be applied as an early post emergence to late post emergence. The activity of herbicides can be enhanced in various ways to achieve the maximum benefit. One of the ways is to use combinations. There is always a need in the art for improved herbicidal combinations with enhanced weed control efficacy, which are safe to crops and have no adverse effect on germination or growth of succeeding crops. Thus, there arises a need in the art to combine herbicides with varied modes of action, which allows for broader spectrum of control, targeted effect and good resistance management apart from good residual effect on succeeding crops using lower application rates.
[0017] Unfortunately, it is usually not possible to predict synergistic activity for combinations of known herbicides, even if the compounds show a close structural similarity to known synergistic combinations. Accordingly, it is desirable to develop compositions and processes comprising combination of herbicides having different mode of action to give improved herbicidal bio-efficacy, broad-spectrum activity with better weed control, increased crop yield and reduced weed resistance and better crop safety by having targeted action on weeds and minimum damage to succeeding crops.
[0018] There is a need for an herbicidal formulation that is highly efficient, non- toxic, covers a broader spectrum of weeds and is environment friendly and economical. So, there exists a continuous need for new herbicidal combinations to be applied so as to provide an economical and effective solution in terms of weed control, yield, plant growth, broader crop protection spectrum, which can possibly reduce the burden on the environment / farmers, healthy foliage, saves labour cost and is yet cost-effective to the end user.
[0019] There are various prior arts which disclose compositions comprising combination of herbicide actives. Some of such prior arts are listed below:
[0020] Reference can be made to CN102349527A, which discloses a haloxyfop-r-methyl-containing herbicide composition mixed synergistic active component B, wherein the herbicide mixed synergistic active component B is one or more of diphenyl ether herbicides, sulfonylurea herbicides or benzothiazine dione herbicides. The weight ratio of haloxyfop-r-methyl to the herbicide mixed synergistic active component B is (1 to 30%): (0.5 to 50%).
[0021] Reference can also be made to US20100273655 Al, which discloses a herbicidal composition comprising a blend of a) from about 0.3 to about 4 parts by volume of a herbicide formulation, said formulation containing an effective amount of at least one herbicidal agent; b) from about 5 to about 20 parts by volume of a modified plant oil; and c) from about 5 to about 20 parts by volume of a compostable organic particulate.
[0022] However, combining herbicidal actives shows compatibility issues among them and thus formulating a stable composition which provide efficacious synergistic results against weeds is a tedious task. And, it is always desired to provide an improved composition and convenient method which effectively control and eventually eliminate unwanted weedy species from the agricultural crops. So, there is a constant need for the development and application of synergistic formulations which are not only effective in weed control, but also help in increasing the yield of crop.
[0023] The efficacy and chemical stability of the active ingredients and physical stability of the formulated composition may be affected by inert ingredients in the formulation, suitable inert ingredients should not cause decomposition of the active ingredient. Furthermore, inert ingredients should be non-phytotoxic and environmentally safe. Inert ingredients of formulations intended for dilution with water before application should be easily dissolved or dispersed in water.
[0024] As a solution to the above mentioned problems, the inventors of the present invention surprisingly found that composition comprising A) Haloxyfop or its agrochemically acceptable salts, esters and derivatives thereof; B) compound of Formula I, chemically known as 5-[(2- chloro-a,a,a-trifluoro-p-tolyl)oxy]-A-mesyl-2-nitrobenzamide or its agrochemically acceptable salts, esters and derivatives thereof; and C) compound of Formula II, chemically known as Ethyl 2-[[[[(4-chloro-6-methoxy-2- pyrimidinyl)amino]carbonyl]amino]sulfonyl]benzoate or its agrochemically acceptable salts, esters and derivatives thereof, is synergistically effective for broad spectrum weed control in all stages of weed growth.

[0153] Evaluation of synergistic effect of herbicidal composition of the present invention
[0154] A synergistic effect of two or more products exists whenever the action of an active ingredient combination is greater than the sum of the actions of the individual components. Synergism was calculated by using Colby’s method (Weeds, vol. 15 No. 1 (Jan 1967), pp. 20-2.
[0155] The synergistic action expected for a given combination of two active components can be calculated as follows:
[0156] XY
[0157] E = (X + Y) - -
[0158] 100 The synergistic action expected for a given combination of three active components can be calculated as follows:
[0159] (XY+YZ+XZ) (XYZ)
[0160] E = (X + Y + Z) - - + -
[0161] 100 10000
[0162] Where:
[0163] E represents expected percentage of herbicidal control for the combination of the two or three actives ingredients at defined doses (for example equal to x, y and z, respectively).
[0164] X is the percentage of herbicidal control observed by the compound (Compound of Formula I) at a defined dose (equal to x).
[0165] Y is the percentage of herbicidal control observed by the compound (Haloxyfop-R-Methyl) at a defined dose (equal to y).
[0166] Z is the percentage of herbicidal control observed by the compound (Compound of Formula II) at a defined dose (equal to z).
[0167] When the percentage of herbicidal control observed for the combination is greater than the expected percentage, there is a synergism effect.

[0173] Experiment for Synergistic activity of combination product of present invention:
[0174] Example 1- Details of experiment on soybean crop:
[0175] Field experiment for synergistic activity of Compound of Formula I, Haloxyfop-R-methyl and Compound of Formula II for the control of weeds in soybean crop was conducted by the Research & Development Department of the inventor at farmer field, Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh).
[0176] To evaluate the synergistic effect, soybean (Variety: JS-2098) crop was sown in 4 m x 5 m plots maintaining 30 cm x 10 cm plant distance with three replications and in Randomized Block Design (RBD). The treatments were sprayed at 2-3 leaf stage of weed flora as WP formulation @ 500 g / ha with the help of Knapsack sprayer fitted with flat fan nozzle. Each active component was applied at four doses in different ternary and binary combinations. Solo components were also taken for comparison. The treatment details are as under:
[0177] The treatments T1 to T28 were used as seed treatment whereas no treatment was done for T29 control treatment. Observations for weeds such as Brachiaria sp., Digitaria sanguinalis, Dinebra arabica, Echinochloa sp., Eleusine indica, Eragrostis sp., Panicum isochmi, Euphorbia hirta, Commelina benghalensis, Dactyloctenium aegyptium, Digera arvensis, Trianthema sp., Phyllanthus niruri, Aclypha indica, Cyperus rotundus, Celosia argentea, Cucumis trigonus, Cyprus iria, Parthenium hysterophorus, Caesulia auxillaris etc. were recorded at 40 days after crop sowing (DAS) by observing weed population in an area of 0.5 x 0.5 m (0.25 m2) at 4 random spots per plot. The per cent weed control efficacy was calculated by the weed population per m2area. Based on the per cent weed control efficacy the
[0178] Expected control was calculated and compared with Observed control. The results of the trial have been presented here under in Table 1.
[0179] Table 1: Synergistic effect of combination product of the present invention (Compound of Formula I + Haloxyfop-R-methyl + Compound of Formula II) against weeds in soybean crop It is clearly evident from the data shown in above Table 1 for per cent weed control efficacy in soybean crop that the ternary combination composition of the present invention comprising Compound of Formula I, Haloxyfop-R-methyl and Compound of Formula II (T1 to T4) are synergistic for weed control with > 1 Colby’s Ratio. The binary combinations of two herbicides (Compound of Formula I + Compound of Formula II; Compound of Formula I + Haloxyfop- R-methyl; Haloxyfop-R-methyl + Compound of Formula II) T5 to T16 are compatible but synergistic effect shown is low for the control of weeds.
[0180] Experiment for Bio-efficacy evaluation of combination product of present invention:
[0181] For the ternary and binary combination based on Compound of Formula I, Haloxyfop-R-methyl and Compound of Formula II evaluation under field conditions, the basic test composition as Compound of Formula I 20% + Haloxyfop-R-Methyl 24% + Compound of Formula II 1.5% WP was manufactured specifically by the inventor. For ternary combination, Compound of Formula I 20% + Haloxyfop-R-Methyl 24% + Compound of Formula II 1.5% WP was used and for binary combination Compound of Formula I 20% + Haloxyfop-R-Methyl 24% WP, Compound of Formula 120% + Compound of Formula II 1.5% WP, Haloxyfop-R-Methyl 24% + Compound of Formula II 1.5% WP were used. The solo formulation of Compound of Formula I 20% WP, Haloxyfop-R-Methyl 24% WP, Compound of Formula II 1.5% WP and other formulations Haloxyfop R Methyl 10.5% w / w EC, Compound of Formula II 25% WP + Surfactant, Fluazifop-p-butyl 11.1% w / w + Compound of Formula I 11.1% w / w SL available in the market were used for comparison. Furthermore, these herbicide treatments were compared with untreated control treatments.
[0182] Example 2: Evaluation of the combination product of the present invention on soybean
[0183] The synergistic composition of the present invention Compound of Formula I 20% + Haloxyfop-R- Methyl 24% + Compound of Formula II 1.5% WP was evaluated on soybean crop variety JS 2098 at a farmer field, Ujjain. The spray was done at 2-3 leaf stage of weed flora following Randomized Block Design (RBD) with three replications maintaining a distance of 30 cm x 10 cm between plants and rows in 4 m x 5 m plots.
[0184] The observations were recorded for the following objectives.
[0185] Objectives:
[0186] 1. Bio-efficacy evaluation against weeds on soybean crop
[0187] 2. Bio-efficacy evaluation based on crop yield 3. Economics of treatments based on Cost: Benefit Ratio
[0188] 4. Phytotoxicity evaluation on soybean crop
[0189] Treatment details: Methodology: The treatments T1 to T15 and T18 were used as spray whereas no treatment was done for T19 control treatment. Hand operated Knapsack sprayer fitted with flat fan nozzle was used for spraying. The spray volume used was 500 liters per hectare.
[0190] Observation for weeds such as Brachiaria sp., Digitaria sanguinalis, Dinebra arabica, Echinochloa sp., Eleusine indica, Eragrostis sp., Panicum isochmi, Euphorbia hirta, Commelina benghalensis, Dactyloctenium aegyptium, Digera arvensis, Trianthema sp., Phyllanthus niruri, Aclypha indica, Cyperus rotundus, Celosia argentea, Cucumis trigonus, Cyprus iria, Parthenium hysterophorus, Caesulia auxillaris etc. was recorded at 30, 45 and 60 days after treatment based on weed population. For recording the weed population, an area of 0.5 x 0.5 m (0.25 m2) was marked at four spots in each treatment and weed observations were made from the same marked area and was worked out to calculate weed number per m2area. The data was expressed in terms of weed control efficacy calculated by the weed population per m2area. The crop yield was recorded at crop harvest. The observations for phytotoxicity to soybean crop at 30, 45 and 60 days after crop sowing were also recorded. Based on treatment application cost, market price of produce and net profit, the Cost: Benefit Ratio was calculated for the economics of ternary combination treatments. The data was subjected to statistical analysis of variance. Results are presented in Table 2, 3, 4.
[0191] Results:
[0192] Table 2: Field bio-efficacy evaluation of Compound of Formula I 20% + Haloxyfop-R- Methyl 24% + Compound of Formula II 1.5% WP against weeds of soybean crop
[0193] DAS - Days after sowing; DAT - Days after treatment
[0194] Table 3: Field bio-efficacy evaluation of Compound of Formula I 20% + Haloxyfop-R- Methyl 24% + Compound of Formula II 1.5% WP based on crop yield of soybean
[0195] DAS - Days after crop sowing Table 4: Phytotoxicity evaluation of Compound of Formula I 20% + Haloxyfop-R- Methyl 24% + Compound of Formula II 1.5% WP on soybean crop
[0196] From the example, it can be clearly seen that the combination of the present invention is superior for controlling the weeds at 30, 45 and 60 days after treatment (Table 2) in soybean crop as compared to the solo and binary compositions. Other registered formulated products available in the market, Fluazifop-p-butyl 11.1% w / w + Compound of Formula I 11.1% w / w
[0197] SL, Haloxyfop R Methyl 10.5% w / w EC and Compound of Formula II 25% WP + Surfactant evaluated were next in order of effectiveness after ternary combination products. The yield of soybean crop also improved in the ternary combination of Compound of Formula I 20% + Haloxyfop-R- Methyl 24% + Compound of Formula II 1.5% WP as compared to solo, binary and other registered products in market (Table 3). Also, the Cost: Benefit Ratio revealed that ternary combination Compound of Formula I 20% + Haloxyfop -R-Methyl 24% + Compound of Formula II 1.5% WP @ 500 g / ha was most economical with higher Cost: Benefit Ratio as compared to other treatments (Table 3).
[0198] The disclosed combination Compound of Formula I 20% + Haloxyfop-R-Methyl 24% + Compound of Formula II 1.5% WP @ 400, 500, 625 & 1000g / ha showed no phytotoxicity in the soybean crop even after 30, 45 and 60 days after crop sowing (Table 4).
[0199] It is evident from the above tables of examples that the combination composition of the present invention Compound of Formula 120% + Haloxyfop-R-Methyl 24% + Compound of Formula II 1.5% WP resulted in good control of overall weed flora in soybean with higher respective yields as compared to the reference standard products (binary compositions and solo products). The Cost: Benefit Ratio also showed that ternary combination Compound of Formula 120% + Haloxyfop-R-Methyl 24% + Compound of Formula II 1.5% WP @ 500 g / ha was most economical with higher Cost: Benefit Ratio as compared to other binary and solo treatments. Further, the composition of present invention is resulted synergistic.
