Abstract
Description
[0001] PROPULSION APPARATUS FOR PROPELLING PROJECTILES, IN PARTICULAR RODENTICIDES
[0002] FIELD OF INVENTION
[0003] 5 The present invention relates generally to a propulsion apparatus. More specifically, the present invention relates to a propulsion apparatus for propelling projectiles to a predetermined location.
[0004] BACKGROUND OF INVENTION 0 The oil palm industry is very dependent on labour and requires many workers for its operations. Complete reliance on foreign workers is not an ultimate solution but only a temporary measure. In the face of raising labour issues such as labour costs, mechanisation and automation programmes are being ramped up by industry players to tackle the associated labour issues. The mechanisation of the oil palm sector is not considered as a luxury, but an imperative and is vital for industrial players to pursue further as the oil palm sector could be helped with more efficient use of labour and reduced dependence on foreign workers. [0005] Sime Darby Plantation’s upstream operations consist of 239 estates located in Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands covering a total landbank of 744,188ha. Like many other agricultural companies, Sime Darby Plantation (SDP) also faces much damage in the estates which are caused by rats. Rat eat bases of young oil palm trees which could kill the young palms and in older palms, the rats would eat the ripening fruits in the oil palm fresh fruit bunches (FFB) causing damage.
[0006] Apart from damaging matured palm trees, the rats also cause harm to young plantings. During the5 nursery stage, rats feed on the apical tissue, causing death or impeding the normal development of young shoots. On young oil palm trees, rats prefer to target the petiole that forms the fronds, and damage to this area suppresses frond formation. In mature palm trees, rats typically attack the inflorescence and fruit bunch, damaging the inflorescence and affecting flowering and damaging fruits reducing yield (Wood 1982). 0
[0007] The rat species commonly found on oil palm plantations in Peninsular Malaysia include Rattus tiomanicus (Miller), Rattus argentiventer (Robinson and Kloss), and Rattus rattus diardii (L.) (Wood 1976). R. tiomanicus is the most prevalent species, especially in mature palm trees (Wood 1968). In contrast, R. argentiventer is typically found in nurseries and young oil palm trees (Wood 1982). It is also common in oil palm plantations that were previously planted with rubber (Wood 1976). R. rattus diardii is usually associated with human dwellings but has become widespread in oil palm plantations, particularly in areas where R. tiomanicus has been controlled by baiting (Soh et al. 1982; Mohd 1985).
[0008] One way to controlling the rat population is by using chemical control of the rats which is the usage of0 poisonous baits to kill the rats. The focus of this present invention is on the delivery mechanism in delivering efficiently and effectively the rodenticides to the oil palm estates. Current method is done manually (walk and scatter) whereby the workers in the oil palm estates manually scatters the rodenticides by hand on frond heaps. The workers would continuously do this till the task for a day is completed. This translates to a productivity of approximately 10 ha / day I worker only.
[0009] Chinese CN215454937U registered utility model discloses a poison bait precise spraying machine which comprises a machine frame, a driving device, a supporting frame, an air supply fan and a stock bin, the driving device, the supporting frame and the air supply fan are fixed on the machine frame, an input shaft of the driving device is fixedly connected with an output shaft of a tractor, and an output shaft of the driving device is fixedly connected with an input shaft of the air supply fan. [0045] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS OF THE PRESENT INVENTION
[0046] The present invention relates generally to a propulsion apparatus (301). More preferably, the present invention relates to a propulsion apparatus (301) for propelling projectiles to a predetermined location. Most preferably, the apparatus of the present invention is with respect to propelling rodenticides toward frond heaps in the oil palm estates.
[0047] The present invention provides a propulsion apparatus (301) for propelling or projecting a predetermined projectile to a predetermined location, wherein the apparatus comprises at least one hopper container (101), at least one conveyor (102) for the at least one hopper container (101), at least one chute (103), at least one projectile launcher (104), at least one first motor (204) for the at least one conveyor (102) and at least one second motor (205) for the at least one projectile launcher (104), whereby the propulsion apparatus is detachably coupled to a movable vehicle (302), the at least one conveyor (102) is to move the predetermined projectile from the at least one hopper container (101) to the at least one projectile launcher (104) via the at least one chute (103) and the least one projectile launcher (104) propels or projects the predetermined projectile to the predetermined location.
[0048] For the purposes of the present invention, the propulsion apparatus (301) is to propel or project rodenticides or rat baits toward frond heaps in the oil palm estates. However, the present invention can also be used for other purposes such as propelling fertilisers in other estates apart from oil palm estates based on the needs and / or preference of a user of the present invention.
[0049] It can be appreciated that the parameters for the present invention are not obvious for a person skilled in the art and have been tested and determined by the inventors based on numerous trials conducted, observations, discussions and combined expertise, which would not be able to be determined without much efforts and analysis. All prior arts as listed and referred to above do not specifically describe the apparatus of this present invention.
[0050] The apparatus of the present invention results in increased productivity, reduced operational costs, and improved profitability. Safety of workers are also increased as this mechanised means results in reduced risk injury and exposure to hazardous chemicals for the workers. This is because different types of rodenticides contain different amounts and concentrations of toxic ingredients which can be harmful to human health.
[0051] The apparatus of the present invention saves time and labour as conventional application of rodenticides in the oil palm estates are done manually whereby the workers carry buckets of rodenticides and manually scatter them on top of the frond heaps in the estates. This is done continuously until the workers have completed their assigned task for the day. Manual way of applying rodenticides in the oil palm estates are ineffective, inefficient and costly. This translates to a productivity of approximately of only 10 ha / day / worker. The apparatus of the present invention is simple to use (user-friendly) as the operator or worker only needs to manoeuvre the apparatus in the estates and turn on a button in order to shoot / project / propel rodenticides toward the frond heaps. Therefore, the apparatus of the present invention can cover a larger area (a bigger hectarage) in an oil palm estate in a shorter time hence resulting in increased efficiency and productivity. This translates to a productivity of around 35 to 40 ha / day for estates with flat undulating terrains and around 20 to 25 ha / day for estates with terraced areas.
[0052] The apparatus of the present invention ensures effective, efficient, accurate and consistent distribution or application of rodenticides in the oil palm estates, thus, effectively controlling rat population in the estates. Effective control of rat population in the oil palm plantation is essential, as this will reduce crop damage and losses to the company.

The apparatus of the present invention also provides a flexible solution for application of rodenticides in the oil palm estates depending on the size of the estates and / or needs of the user of the present invention. Apart from that, any type (i.e. size, shape, wax content) of rodenticides can be used with the apparatus of the present invention.
[0054] This apparatus for purposes of applying rodenticides in the oil palm estates is a novel method of doing so and significantly improves the manual means of applying rodenticides in the oil palm estates. The ability of this present invention to distribute rodenticides uniformly and efficiently while also reducing the need for manual labour offers a competitive edge to plantation owners and operators.
[0055] The apparatus of the present invention can be used to propel other projectiles such as fertilisers in the oil palm estates and also in other estates. The apparatus is flexible for use based on the needs of the user of the present invention.

[0134] Movable vehicle (302) for this present invention can be any type of prime movers depending on the preference of the users of the present invention. The inventors prefer to use a mechanical buffalo as it is compact, light weighted and has good manoeuvrability which can be used in various terrains in the oil palm estates. The apparatus of the present invention is suitable for use on any soil conditions. The apparatus is suitable for use at both coastal and inland estates, and during any types of weather conditions specifically tropical and subtropical climate conditions.
[0135] According to Figures 1, 3 and 4, the projectile launcher (104) is positioned 90° from the vertical axis-Y of the movable vehicle (302). The projectile launcher (104) is positioned horizontally on the movable vehicle (302) and do not need to be at any incline angle as the speed of the projectile launcher motor (205) determines distance of thrust of the predetermined projectiles (rodenticides) from the movable vehicle (302) to the predetermined location in the estates.
[0136] The at least one projectile launcher (104) is preferably at least two projectile launchers (104) on the left and right sides of the movable vehicle (302). The left-side projectile launcher (104) is to propel the rodenticides toward the frond heaps on the left-side of the movable vehicle (302) and the right-side projectile launcher (104) is to propel the rodenticides toward the frond heaps on the right-side of the movable vehicle (302) when the movable vehicle (302) is travelling on the travel path in the oil palm estates.
[0137] For the purposes of this present invention, each conveyor (102) has its own motor, a conveyor motor with housing or casing (204) and each projectile launcher (104) has its own motor, projectile launcher motor (205) per below:
[0138] • a motor for the left-side projectile launcher;
[0139] • a motor for the right-side projectile launcher;
[0140] • a motor for the left-hopper container conveyor; and
[0141] • a motor for the right-hopper container conveyor.
[0142] The at least one projectile launcher (104) comprises at least one launcher housing or casing (105), at least one vibration absorber (106) and at least one projectile launcher barrel (107).
[0143] The purpose of the launcher housing or casing (105) is to shield and protect the projectile launcher (104) from being damaged by external factors such as weather and debris. The vibration absorber (106) functions to absorb any types of vibrations of the projectile launcher (104) to ensure efficient thrust to propel the rodenticides is achieved in order to land on the frond heaps.
[0144] The propulsion apparatus (301) further comprises at least one hopper container cover or closing (201) to close the hopper container (101) containing the rodenticides from falling off the apparatus when in use in the estates, at least one hopper container leg support (202) to be fitted onto or to sit solidly I firmly onto a movable vehicle (302) when in use in the estates and at least one conveyor housing or casing (203) to protect the at least one conveyor (102) from being damaged by external factors (weather I debris). The at least one launcher housing or casing (105) includes at least one rotatable or spinning disc (108) with at least one propeller blade (109).
[0145] The at least one propeller blade (109) is at least two propeller blades (109) or preferably four propeller blades (109) or more to provide an efficient thrust to propel the rodenticides toward the frond heaps in the estates.
[0146] The rodenticides are carried by the left-side conveyor from the left-hopper container into the left-side chute inlet and released out from the left-side chute outlet into the left-side projectile launcher. The rodenticides falls onto the left-side rotatable or spinning disc inside the left-side launcher housing or casing. When this happens, the rodenticides will be struck or hit by the four propeller blades (109) of the left-side rotatable or spinning disc in order to obtain efficient force or thrust to propel towards the frond heaps in the estates via the left-side projectile launcher barrel.
[0147] The rodenticides are carried by the right-side conveyor from the right-hopper container into the rightside chute inlet and released out from the right-side chute outlet into the right-side projectile launcher. The rodenticides falls onto the right-side rotatable or spinning disc inside the right-side launcher housing or casing. When this happens, the rodenticides will be struck or hit by the four propeller blades (109) of the right-side rotatable or spinning disc in order to obtain efficient force or thrust to propel towards the frond heaps in the estates via the right-side projectile launcher barrel.
[0148] According to Figure 6, the rodenticides will fall and drop on top of or onto the rotatable or spinning disc (108) inside the housing or casing (105) and roll toward the propeller blades (109). The rodenticides will be struck by the propeller blades (109) to provide the propelling force or thrust from the rotatable or spinning disc (108) to propel toward the frond heap. At least one propeller blade (109) is sufficient, however it is preferred to have at least four for effective and efficient thrust to propel the rodenticides in its projectile motion. A projectile motion is the motion of the predetermined projectile (rodenticide) projected or propelled into the air from the projectile launcher (104).
[0149] More than four propeller blades (109) can also be used depending on the preference of the user of the present invention. For the purposes of the present invention, the propeller blades (109) are made from stainless steel but are layered with a protective layer to prevent damage to the rodenticides. The rodenticides will not disintegrate when propelled toward the designated location due to this protective layer such as a padding around propeller blades (109). The material of the propeller blades (109) can be any type depending on the preference of the user of the present invention.
[0150] According to Figure 7, the at least one chute (103) includes at least one chute inlet (206), at least one chute outlet (207) and at least one air inlet (208) coupled to the at least one chute outlet (207). The at least one chute inlet (206) is coupled to the at least hopper container (101) and the at least one chute outlet (207) is coupled to the at least one projectile launcher (104). The air inlet (208) is important to allow flow of air to enter into the projectile launcher (104) to create a pressure difference between the inside and outside of the projectile launcher (104) for efficient projection or launch of the rodenticides toward the frond heaps.
[0151] The propeller blades (109) used forthis present invention are quadrilateral shaped blades as this shape is suitable for use for any type (i.e. size, shape, wax content) of the rodenticides used with this present invention. The diameter of the rotatable or spinning disc (108) is in a range of between 15cm to 20cm as used and tested by the inventors of this present invention.
[0152] The number of rodenticides to be propelled to each predetermined location to be determined by individual estate requirement. The operator of the apparatus of present invention to ensure that sufficient rodenticides are propelled toward each predetermined location.
[0153] One or more rodenticides can be released at a time to the rotatable or spinning disc (108) to be propelled out from the projectile launcher (104). This can be determined by the preference of the users of the present invention. For the purposes of the present invention, the number of rodenticides which falls onto the rotatable or spinning disc (108) should not exceed 500 rodenticides to prevent damage to the spinning disc (108) taking into account that each rodenticide weighs about 5g each.
[0154] The at least one conveyor (102) used for this present invention is preferably an inclined conveyor with buckets (209) as this type of conveyor allows for any type of rodenticides to be used for the purposes of this present invention. This type of conveyor uses a chain system equipped with multiple conveyor buckets or baskets (209) (with sprockets below the chain system), for efficient and effective moving of the predetermined projectiles (rodenticides) from the at least one hopper container (101) to the at least one projectile launcher (104).
[0155] According to Figure 8, the conveyor buckets (209) are customised by the inventors for the purposes of the present invention. Currently there is no inclined conveyor (102) with buckets (209) that are available in the market for use to carry rodenticides to be propelled onto the frond heaps. This inclined conveyor (102) with buckets (209) is customised in-house to cater for all shapes and sizes and even the wax content of the rodenticides for effective use in the oil palm estates. This design also ensures that the movement of the rodenticides move effectively with assistance of the force of gravity.
[0156] For the purposes of the present invention:
[0157] • the inclined angle of the conveyor (102) to allow smooth and efficient movement of the rodenticides with assistance of the force of gravity is preferably in a range of between 20° to 25°;
[0158] • the conveyor buckets (209) comes with a diameter in a range of between 2.7cm to 2.9cm, height in a range of between 2.7cm to 2.9cm and thickness in between 0.09cm to 0.11 cm; and
[0159] • there is an opening or hole in the middle of each conveyor bucket (209) whereby the diameter of the opening is in a range of between 2.1 cm to 2.3 cm. According to Figure 8, the customised conveyor buckets (209) are preferably circular shaped buckets with parameters as mentioned above as it works the best and efficiently with rodenticides with any shapes, sizes and wax content as tested by the inventors of the present invention. Other shapes can also be used for the conveyor bucket (209), however the inventors of the present invention have determined that this circular shape fits best. The circular shape is also preferred as it prevents debris or foreign particles from clogging or being stuck inside the conveyor bucket (209). The debris would move to the opening or hole in the middle of the conveyor bucket (209) to be removed or dispelled accordingly.
[0160] Apart from that, the conveyor bucket (209) is a modular design as it can be independently modified or replaced or for easy maintenance at the conveyor (102). The inventors of the present invention prefer stainless steel conveyor buckets (209), however the conveyor buckets (209) can be made from any type of materials depending on the preference of the user of the present invention.
[0161] The number of conveyor buckets (209) required has an impact on how long the apparatus of the present invention takes to propel one rodenticide after another toward the frond heap and this can be modified or customised based on preference and needs of the user of the present invention.
[0162] Based on the inventors of the present invention, a minimum of 4 conveyor buckets (209) for a minimum conveyor (102) length of about 53cm to a maximum of 36 conveyor buckets (209) with a maximum conveyor (102) length of about 480cm with spacing between each conveyor bucket (209) in a range of between 12cm to 13cm is sufficient and efficient for the purposes of the present invention.
[0163] 12 conveyor buckets (209) are used for the purposes of the present invention with the spacing between each conveyor bucket (209) in a range of between 12cm to 13cm as tested by the inventors of the present invention. The spacing of 12cm to 13cm between each conveyor bucket (209) provides a 1 second gap between the conveyor buckets (209) and is able to effectively move the rodenticides to the projectile launcher (104) with the speed of the conveyor motor (204) in a range of between 4.5 m / s to 5.0 m / s, preferably around 4.71 m / s.
[0164] The movement of the conveyor (102) is continuous to ensure steady flow and supply of rodenticides to the projectile launcher (104). The speed of the conveyor motor (204) can be adjusted and controlled by the operator based on requirements of individual estates. It is preferably not more than 5.0 m / s as this would require the operator to drive the movable vehicle (302) at a faster speed which may be dangerous (unsafe act) due to uneven condition of the estates. Rodenticides:
[0165] The predetermined projectile for the purposes of this present invention refers to a rodenticide (an object in solid form). Rodenticides or rat baits or also commonly referred to as rat poison are highly toxic chemical poison used for rodents, like rats and mice. Rodenticides can differ in their properties for example shape, wax content, texture, size etc.
[0166] There are various types or forms of rodenticides, such as: pellets pastes blocks grains
[0167] - gels and others.
[0168] Oil palm estates uses a variety of rodenticides (or rat baits) which differ in their properties, including wax content, size and shape. The purpose of the wax content of the rodenticides are to protect the active ingredients from moisture which would reduce effectiveness of the rodenticides and the wax content contributes to the rodenticide’s appeal to the rats. The wax also allows for easy consumption of the rats, hence, increasing its effectiveness. For the purposes of this present invention referring to Figure 9, the following rodenticides were used and tested.
[0169] Any types of rodenticides can be used with the present invention depending on needs and preference of the users.
[0170] Projectile motion:
[0171] For the purposes of this present invention, each conveyor (102) has its own motor, a conveyor motor with housing or casing (204) and each projectile launcher (104) has its own motor, projectile launcher motor (205). The motor voltage for each motor is 24V for the purposes of the present invention, which is sufficient for a maximum 50kgs load in the hopper container (101), to move the predetermined projectile from the hopper container (101) to the projectile launcher (104) as tested by the inventors of the present invention.
[0172] Projectile motion is the motion of the projectile (rodenticide) when projected into the air when shot out or propelled by the projectile launcher (104) to a minimum distance of at least 3m from the left-side or right-side of a movable vehicle (302) to the predetermined location (frond heap). The projectile launcher motor (205) of 24V can produce torque (force that causes rotation) in a range of between 100 RPM to 1 ,000 RPM (revolutions per minute) in order to propel the projectile from the projectile launcher (104) to a minimum of 3m (horizontally) toward the frond heap. The force or RPM here is very important for the propulsion of the rodenticides to the predetermined location. The stronger the force applied, the further the rodenticide will travel. If the force applied is not sufficient, the rodenticide will fall short of its predetermined location.
[0173] A diameter of a palm circle is about 3m. If the operator of the apparatus of the present stops at the most left or right of the harvesting path, then a minimum distance of 3m is required for the rodenticides to cross the palm circle and fall on the frond heap. If the distance of less than 3m, then the rodenticides will fall onto the harvesting path. The maximum distance is approximately in a range of between 7m to 10m from the movable vehicle (302) which is further explained below, in the event the operator stops in the middle of the travelling path in the estates.
[0174] For the purposes of the present invention, the inventors have used the following parameters to test the apparatus of the present invention which is further detailed below:
[0175] Initial velocity of the projectile after being struck by the propeller blades (109) are determined using the formula v = cor, wherein v refers to the linear velocity, co refers to the angular velocity and r refers to the radius of the spinning disc (108), whereby
[0176] • height of projectile launcher (104) from the ground of the estates is 120cm;
[0177] • voltage of each motor is 24V;
[0178] • speed of each motor (204, 205) is in a range of between 700 rpm to 1 ,000 rpm or 73.3 rad / s to 104.72 rad / s; and
[0179] • radius of the spinning disc (108) is 20cm.
[0180] The initial velocity obtained is in a range of between 14 m / s to 21 m / s.
[0181] Then, the projectile motion or the horizontal distance travelled by the projectile is calculated using the formula using the range of initial velocity obtained above:
[0182] 2h r = Vt = vv — 9 which provides an horizontal distance in a range of between 7m to 10.5m.
[0183] The distance can be adjusted and determined accordingly based on needs and preference of the user of the present invention. Control system:
[0184] The operator uses at least one control system to operate the apparatus of the present invention.
[0185] A control system provide instructions to the electrical switches or fuses to stop or allow the flow of electricity to the motors (i.e. a motor for the left-side projectile launcher, a motor for the right-side projectile launcher, a motor for the left-hopper container conveyor and a motor for the right-hopper container conveyor).
[0186] The control system of the apparatus of the present invention is as follows:-
[0187] A first control system consists of an on / off switch and at least one knob controller for at the at least one second motor or the at least one projectile launcher motor (205) to propel the rodenticides toward the frond heap.
[0188] A second control system consist of an / off switch and at least one knob controller for the at least one first motor or the at least one conveyor motor (204) for the movement of at least one conveyor (102) in the at least one hopper container (101).
[0189] For the purposes of the present invention, battery powered motors are used. The batteries provides electrical energy to drive the motors and also to activate fuses (or any types of electrically operated switches) which control flow of the electric current to different components of the apparatus of the present invention which is sufficient for operations in the oil palm estates.
[0190] The operator of the apparatus of the present invention may control the apparatus with the following components:
[0191] • 4 fuses or 4 electrical switches - on / off fuses or electrical switches - to turn on and off the conveyors (102) in the hopper containers (101) and the projectile launchers (104); and
[0192] • 4 knob controllers or round handles or small round devices to adjust speed of the 4 motors.
[0193] There are 4 motors for the purposes of the present invention - 2 conveyor motors (204) and 2 projectile launcher motors (205). The motor comes with a gearbox to ease / assist the movement of the conveyors (102) due to the heavy load of the hopper containers (101). By using 1 motor for each conveyor rather than 2 conveyors (102) sharing 1 motor or both the projectile launchers (104) sharing 1 motor, this ensures that each component has its dedicated power and is able to operate independently.
[0194] Apart from that, the load on each motor is also reduced, hence increasing their efficiency and reduces likelihood of motor failure, less frequent repairs or replacements. In addition to that, using separate motors for each component enables easier troubleshooting in case there are any issues with the components of the apparatus of the present invention. Findings
[0195] Detailed information below illustrates the efficient operations of the apparatus of the present invention in the oil palm estates.
[0196] Specification of the projectile launcher are as follows:
[0197] 1 . Motor 24V
[0198] 2. Torque 1 1 .67 Hz to 16.67 Hz (700-1 ,000 RPM)
[0199] 3. Diameter of the spinning disc with blades 20cm
[0200] 4. Diameter of the projectile launcher barrel 6 cm
[0201] 5. Height of projectile launcher from the ground 120 cm
[0202] Horizontal Projectile Motion Equations
[0203] The equations governing horizontal projectile motion can be considered as a specific subset of general formulas. In this case, the launch angle does not require explicit specification since it aligns parallel to the ground, resulting in an angle of 0°. Consequently, the initial velocity can be broken down into a single component, denoted as:
[0204] Vx= V, while the vertical component, Vy = 0.
[0205] For convenience, we will establish the starting point at the origin. Subsequently, the equations of motion for horizontal projectile motion can be expressed as follows:
[0206] Horizontal distance
[0207] The distance covered horizontally can be represented as:
[0208] X = Vt, where X denotes the horizontal distance and t represents time.
[0209] Vertical distance
[0210] The distance above the ground in the vertical direction can be described by the formula:
[0211] Here, g symbolizes the acceleration due to gravity, and h represents the elevation.
[0212] Horizontal velocity
[0213] The velocity in the horizontal direction remains constant throughout and is represented by V. Vertical velocity
[0214] The velocity in the vertical direction can be expressed as —gt, where g signifies the acceleration due to gravity.
[0215] Horizontal acceleration
[0216] The horizontal acceleration remains constant and is equal to 0 since no external forces act in this direction.
[0217] Vertical acceleration
[0218] The vertical acceleration is equal to — g since the only force influencing the projectile is gravity, acting in the downward direction.
[0219] Combining the equations:
[0220] 19
[0221] X = Vt and y = — ~gt allows us to eliminate the variable t. Subsequently, the trajectory equation becomes:
[0222] To determine the time of flight of the projectile, it is necessary to calculate when the projectile reaches the ground. In our chosen coordinate system, this occurs when the y-coordinate is equal to:
[0223] From this equation, the time of flight can be determined as: t = - g
[0224] The range of the projectile refers to the total horizontal distance traveled during the flight time. Thus, it can be expressed as: r = Vt = W— g Initial Velocity
[0225] To calculate the initial velocity of the rodenticide after being struck or hit by the propeller blade, formula for linear velocity can be use. Formula used to calculate linear velocity of the rodenticide after being propelled out after being hit but the propeller blades on the spinning disc is as follows: v = a>r whereby: v: the linear velocity co: the angular velocity r: the radius of the spinning disc
[0226] To calculate the horizontal distance covered by the rodenticide, the initial velocity of the rodenticide right after being projected needs to be calculated.
[0227] First, to convert the motor speed from rpm to radians per second (rad / s), by multiplying the rpm by 2TT / 60:
[0228] For rpm = 700 rpm: co = (700 rpm) x 2TT / 60 = 73.3 rad / s
[0229] For rpm = 1000 rpm: co = (1000 rpm) x 2TT / 60 = 104.72 rad / s
[0230] Next, need to determine the radius of the spinning disc, which is given as 20 cm or 0.20 m.
[0231] Now these values can be substitute into the formula:
[0232] For co = 73.3 rad / s: v = cor = (73.3 rad / s) x 0.20 m = 14.66 m / s
[0233] For co = 104.72 rad / s: v = cor = (104.72 rad / s) x 0.20 m = 20.94 m / s
[0234] Therefore, the initial velocity of the rodenticide after being struck by the blade is estimated to be between 14.66 m / s and 20.94 m / s, depending on the motor speed.
[0235] Given that the projectile launcher’s height from the ground is 120 cm and the initial velocity values are
[0236] 14.6 m / s and 20.94 m / s, the horizontal distance covered can be calculated using this formula:
[0237] Distance horizontal cover for initial speed, 14.66 m / s: l(2)(1.20) r = (14.66)
[0238] J 9.81 r = (14.66)70. 244648 r = (14.66)(0.4946) r = 7.25 m
[0239] Distance horizontal cover for initial speed, 20.94 m / s: l(2)(1.20) r = (20.94)
[0240] J 9.81 r = (20.94)70.244648 r = (20.94)(0.4946) r = 10.36 m
[0241] Transporting the rodenticides via the inclined conveyor to the projectile launcher:
[0242] Assuming that the material being transported has a mass of 50kgs and is being transported at a constant velocity, the following equation to calculate the torque required can be used:
[0243] Torque = (mass * gravity * sin(theta) * distance) / (efficiency * radius) whereby: mass = 50 kgs (mass of material being transported) gravity = 9.81 m / sA2 (acceleration due to gravity) theta = 20° (inclination angle of the conveyor which is the angle between the conveyor and the positive direction of x-axis distance = 50 cm = 0.5 m (distance travelled by each rodenticide from hopper container to projectile launcher) efficiency = 1 (assumed efficiency of the conveyor system) efficiency refers to how efficient the rodenticides are projected from the projectile launcher. radius = 2.62 cm = 0.0262 m (radius of sprocket of the inclined conveyor)
[0244] Substituting the given values into the equation, we get:
[0245] Torque = (50 kg * 9.81 m / sA2 * sin(20 degrees) * 0.5 m) / (1 * 0.0262 m)
[0246] Torque = 3,201.54 Nm
[0247] The torque value was calculated as 3,201.54 Nm. Torque is a measure of the force that causes an object to rotate around an axis or pivot point. In this context, the torque represents the amount of twisting force required to turn the sprocket on the inclined conveyor system, given the load at the bottom of the hopper and the distance travelled from the bottom of the hopper to the projectile launcher.
[0248] Summary:
[0249] The apparatus of the present invention results in increased productivity, reduced operational costs, and improved profitability. Safety of workers are also increased as this mechanised means results in reduced risk injury and exposure to hazardous chemicals for the workers. [0250] The apparatus of the present invention saves time and labour as conventional application of rodenticides in the oil palm estates are done manually whereby the workers carry buckets of rodenticides and manually scatter them on top of the frond heaps in the estates. This is done continuously until the workers have completed their assigned task for the day. Manual way of applying rodenticides in the oil palm estates are ineffective, inefficient and costly. This translates to a productivity of approximately of only 10 ha / day / worker.
[0251] The apparatus of the present invention is simple to use (user-friendly) as the operator or worker only needs to manoeuvre the apparatus in the estates and turn on a button in order to shoot I project I propel rodenticides toward the frond heaps. The apparatus of the present invention ensures effective, efficient, accurate and consistent distribution or application of rodenticides in the oil palm estates, thus, effectively controlling rat population in the estates. Effective control of rat population in the oil palm plantation is essential, as this will reduce crop damage and losses to the company.
[0252] The apparatus of the present invention can be used with any prime mover or movable vehicle depending on the preference of the user of the present invention.
[0253] This apparatus for purposes of applying rodenticides in the oil palm estates is a novel method of doing so and significantly improves the manual means of applying rodenticides in the oil palm estates. The ability of this present invention to distribute rodenticides uniformly and efficiently while also reducing the need for manual labour offers a competitive edge to plantation owners and operators.
