Battery diagnostic device and method of operation thereof

[0001] Cross-citation with related applications

[0002] This invention claims the benefit of priority from Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0095638, filed on July 21, 2023, and all contents of the document in that Korean Patent Application are incorporated herein by reference.

[0003] Technology field

[0004] Embodiments disclosed in this document relate to a battery diagnostic device and an operating method thereof.

[0005] Recently, active research and development has been conducted on secondary batteries. The term "secondary battery" refers to a rechargeable battery, encompassing both conventional Ni / Cd and Ni / MH batteries, as well as more recent lithium-ion batteries. Among secondary batteries, lithium-ion batteries boast a significantly higher energy density than conventional Ni / Cd and Ni / MH batteries. Furthermore, lithium-ion batteries can be manufactured in a compact and lightweight form, making them a popular power source for mobile devices. Recently, their use has expanded to include power sources for electric vehicles, drawing attention as a next-generation energy storage medium.

[0006] As the industrial sector utilizing batteries expands, battery management systems (BMSs), which diagnose battery safety, are also evolving. BMSs utilize various diagnostic algorithms to assess battery performance and implement appropriate control based on battery condition. BMSs can detect the presence of abnormal battery cells. These abnormalities can include any cause that could lead to fire, such as damage or aging of the battery itself. In particular, the use of electronic devices equipped with abnormal batteries due to lithium deposition can cause fire, necessitating the early detection of abnormal battery cells.

[0007] During the rest period after discharge, abnormal battery cells may exhibit voltage behaviors different from those of normal cells. Therefore, abnormal battery cells can be detected by checking the voltage difference obtained through sensing signals for each battery cell.

[0008] However, sensor signals can be weak, have irregular signal periods, and contain various types of noise. Because the sensor signals themselves are inherently uncertain, relying solely on sensor signals to determine whether a battery cell is defective can result in a reduced accuracy in identifying defective cells.

[0009] The technical problems of the embodiments disclosed in this document are not limited to the technical problems mentioned above, and other technical problems not mentioned will be clearly understood by those skilled in the art from the descriptions below.

[0010] A battery diagnostic device according to an embodiment disclosed in this document may include a sensor that acquires voltage data for each of the battery cells; and a processor that calculates a voltage change amount (dV), which is a difference between voltage values at any two points in time for each of the battery cells, based on the voltage data, calculates an accumulated change amount based on the voltage change amount, and diagnoses whether the battery cells are abnormal based on the accumulated change amount.

[0011] In one embodiment, the processor may calculate a Z-score that standardizes the voltage changes based on the average and standard deviation of the voltage changes for the battery cells, and calculate the accumulated change based on the Z-score.

[0012] In one embodiment, the average and the standard deviation are the average and standard deviation of voltage changes for each battery unit including some battery cells among all battery cells, and the processor calculates the Z value for each battery unit, calculates the accumulated change amount based on the Z value, and can diagnose whether the battery unit is abnormal based on the accumulated change amount.

[0013] In one embodiment, the two arbitrary points in time may be any two points in time during the rest period after discharge.

[0014] In one embodiment, the processor can diagnose a battery cell that shows an increasing trend in the accumulated change amount as an abnormal battery cell.

[0015] In one embodiment, the battery diagnostic device may further include a communication circuit that transmits the diagnostic result to a user terminal.

[0016] An operating method of a battery diagnosis device according to an embodiment disclosed in this document may include: obtaining voltage data for each of battery cells; calculating a voltage change amount (dV), which is a difference between voltage values at any two points in time for each of the battery cells, based on the voltage data; calculating an accumulated change amount based on the voltage change amount; and diagnosing whether the battery cells are abnormal based on the accumulated change amount.

[0017] In one embodiment, the operating method may further include an operation of calculating a Z-score that standardizes the voltage change amount based on an average and a standard deviation of the voltage change amounts for the battery cells, and the operation of calculating the accumulated change amount may calculate the accumulated change amount based on the Z-score.

[0018] In one embodiment, the average and the standard deviation are the average and standard deviation of voltage changes for each battery unit including some battery cells among all battery cells, the operation of calculating the Z value calculates the Z value for each battery unit, and the operation of diagnosing can diagnose whether the battery unit is abnormal based on the accumulated change amount.

[0019] In one embodiment, the two arbitrary points in time may be any two points in time during the rest period after discharge.

[0020] In one embodiment, the diagnosing operation may diagnose a battery unit that shows an increasing trend in the accumulated change amount as an abnormal battery unit.

[0021] In one embodiment, the operating method may further include an operation of transmitting a diagnosis result to a user terminal.

[0022] The battery diagnostic device and its operating method according to various embodiments disclosed in this document can detect an abnormal battery cell based on a tendency of the accumulated change amount caused by the abnormal battery cell by calculating the accumulated change amount of the voltage change amount for each battery cell.

[0023] The battery diagnostic device and its operating method according to various embodiments disclosed in this document can reduce errors that may occur between battery modules by converting voltage changes for battery cells into Z values (Z-scores).

[0024] The effects of the battery diagnostic device and the operating method thereof according to the disclosure of this document are not limited to the effects mentioned above, and other effects not mentioned will be clearly understood by those skilled in the art according to the disclosure of this document.
