Description
Battery cells and methods for manufacturing battery cells
[0001] The present invention relates to a battery cell and a method for manufacturing a battery cell.
[0002] The present invention relates to a battery cell, a battery pack including the same, and a vehicle.
[0003] This application claims priority to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0101856, filed August 3, 2023, the entire disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. Furthermore, this application claims priority to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2024-0102303, filed August 1, 2024, the entire disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference.
[0004] The process of manufacturing a battery cell using a cylindrical can includes the steps of deep drawing a metal sheet to form a circular bottom portion and a circular tubular side wall member connected thereto, accommodating an electrode assembly therein, and then closing the open end of the side wall member with a cap.
[0005] Meanwhile, at one of the axial ends of the electrode assembly facing the open end, a current collector plate is provided that contacts and is electrically connected to the electrode tab of the electrode assembly. The current collector plate is connected to the cap or the side wall member by welding or the like so that it contacts and is electrically connected to the cap or the side wall member.
[0006] In the process of welding the current collector plate to the cap or side wall member, the current collector plate must be maintained in close contact with the cap or side wall member. To this end, a jig for contacting the current collector plate and the cap or the current collector plate and the side wall member is required, and in addition, a mask for exposing the welding area is required.
[0007] In order to adhere the current collector plate to the cap or sidewall member using the mask or jig, a space must be provided within the can to accommodate the mask or jig. However, this space remains empty after the mask or jig is removed, resulting in an inefficient use of the can's internal volume. This hinders designs that increase the can's energy density per unit volume.
[0008] Additionally, when closing the open end of the cylindrical can, a process for electrically connecting the current collector to the cap or the side wall member, and a process for connecting the cap to the side wall member are each performed. This increase in the number of processes reduces the production efficiency of cylindrical battery cells and increases the production cost.
[0009] Accordingly, there is a need for a method to efficiently combine the current collector plate and the can and close the open end of the can, and / or a method to realize the efficiency of the welding process and the strength of the welding when performing the welding process for combining parts.
[0010] The present invention has been devised to solve the above-described problem, and provides a welding structure of a battery can, a current collector, and a cap, which enables a design to increase the energy density per unit volume of the can without wasting the internal space of the can when welding a current collector provided on the open end of the can to the can by omitting a separate welding mask or jig, and a battery cell using the welding structure.
[0011] In another aspect, the present invention provides a welding structure of a battery can, a collector plate, and a cap, and a battery cell using the same, which enhances the stability of the welding process by providing the functions of a mask and a jig to the can, the collector plate, and the cap.
[0012] In another aspect, the present invention aims to provide a welding structure of a battery can, a current collector plate, and a cap, and a battery cell using the same, which can increase the production efficiency of a cylindrical battery cell and reduce the production cost by integrating the process of welding the current collector plate to the can and the process of welding the cap to the side wall member into a single welding process.
[0013] In another aspect, the present invention aims to provide a welding structure of a can, a collector plate, and a cap, which welds the can, a collector plate, and a cap together while minimizing the generation of welding heat, thereby simplifying the assembly process of the collector plate and the cap without adversely affecting the electrode assembly, and a battery cell using the welding structure.
[0014] In another aspect, the present invention seeks to provide a welding structure of a can, a collector plate, and a cap, which can increase sealing between the can and the cap while welding the can, the collector plate, and the cap together, and a battery cell using the same.
[0015] In another aspect, the present invention aims to provide a welding structure of a can, a collector plate, and a cap, which can secure weldability, increase process stability, and ensure durability of welding, and a battery cell using the same.
[0016] In another aspect, the present invention aims to provide a welding structure of a can, a collector plate, and a cap, which is suitable for mass production by welding the can, the collector plate, and the cap together while enabling stable and rapid welding, and a battery cell using the welding structure.
[0017] The technical objectives of the present invention are not limited to the purposes mentioned above. Other objectives and advantages of the present invention not mentioned above can be understood through the following description and will be more clearly understood through the embodiments of the present invention. Furthermore, it will be readily apparent that the objectives and advantages of the present invention can be realized by the means and combinations thereof set forth in the claims.
[0018] The above-described problem can be solved by forming a first weld (triple weld) intermittently or partially welding the can, the collector plate, and the cap together during the seam welding process for sealing the can, and forming a second weld (double weld) welding at least the can and the cap together in the remaining seam welding section.
[0019] This can be implemented by scanning a laser to form a second weld joint along at least the abutting portion of the can and the cap extended in the circumferential direction, but by making the energy density of the laser different from the section forming the second weld joint and / or the scanning speed different in the section forming the first weld joint so that the can, the collector plate, and the cap are triple welded together.
[0020] Accordingly, the generation of excessive welding heat is suppressed, and the welding process of the can, collector plate, and cap is kept simple, while the can is reliably sealed.
[0021] The above energy density control or scan speed control can be performed in a direction in which the weld pool propagates smoothly even at the boundary between the first weld and the second weld, by maintaining the homeostasis of the generation, propagation, and solidification processes of the weld pool.
[0022] Then, the seam welding is performed continuously, but the weld pool is spread smoothly only in the section where triple welding is required for electrical connection with the electrode, and the welding range is varied, so that the constancy of the generation, spread, and solidification processes of the weld pool are maintained during the propagation of the melt pool, and the weld pool is spread smoothly, enabling reliable sealing without any defective areas.
[0023] The present invention for solving the above-described problem can be applied to a battery cell including an electrode assembly, a current collector electrically connected to the electrode assembly, and a can that accommodates the electrode assembly and the current collector.
[0024] The can includes a bottom member, a side wall member connected to the bottom member and extending axially, and a cap covering an open end provided at one axial end of the side wall member.
[0025] The above electrode assembly may be in the form of a jelly-roll wound around a predetermined axis.
[0026] An electrode tab is provided at one of the axial ends of the electrode assembly facing the open end, and the current collector plate can be connected to the electrode tab.
[0027] The above current collector plate may include an electrode tab connecting portion that is electrically connected to the electrode tab.
[0028] The above-mentioned current collector plate includes a can connection portion that is electrically connected to the can.
[0029] The above can connection portion and the above electrode tab connection portion can be electrically connected.
[0030] The above can connection portion may be positioned radially outside the above electrode tab connection portion.
[0031] A first welded portion, in which the open end side edge of the side wall member, the edge of the cap, and the can connection portion are welded together, is formed at multiple locations spaced apart along the circumferential direction.
[0032] The first welded portion may be intermittently formed during a process of forming a second welded portion in which at least the open end side edge of the side wall member and the edge of the cap are welded through seam welding.
[0033] The above first welding part can be provided in four or more locations.
[0034] The above first welding part can be provided in 24 or more locations.
[0035] The above second welding portion may be provided in a form connected to the first welding portion in the circumferential direction.
[0036] The above second weld portion can be provided between the first weld portions adjacent in the circumferential direction.
[0037] The above first welding portion and the second welding portion can be formed by laser welding.
[0038] The above first welding portion and the second welding portion can be formed by common scan welding, i.e., one scan welding.
[0039] The circumferential length of the first welded portion may be approximately 0.1 mm to 6 mm.
[0040] Accordingly, the generation of welding heat for forming the first weld can be suppressed.
[0041] The output of the laser in the section forming the first welded portion may be greater than the output of the laser in the section forming the second welded portion.
[0042] The energy density of the laser irradiated area in the section forming the first welded portion may be higher than the energy density of the laser irradiated area in the section forming the second welded portion.
[0043] The laser scan speed of the section forming the first welded portion and the laser scan speed of the section forming the second welded portion may be constant.
[0044] The scanning speed of the laser in the section forming the second welded portion may be slower than the scanning speed of the laser in the section forming the first welded portion.
[0045] The scan speed relative to the output of the laser in the section forming the first welded portion may be slower than the scan speed relative to the output of the laser in the section forming the second welded portion.
[0046] The scan speed relative to the energy density of the irradiated area of the laser forming the first welded portion may be slower than the scan speed relative to the energy density of the irradiated area of the laser forming the second welded portion.
[0047] The depth at which the first weld portion is formed in the axial direction may be deeper than the depth at which the second weld portion is formed.
[0048] The cross-sectional area of the first weld portion viewed in the circumferential direction may be wider than the cross-sectional area of the second weld portion.
[0049] Additionally, a third welded portion may be formed circumferentially spaced apart from the edge of the open end of the side wall member and the edge of the cap.
[0050] The above third welded portion may be a tangible welded portion.
[0051] The first and second welds may be main welds. Before the main welding to form the first and second welds, forming a third weld through tack welding can fix the gap caused by the component tolerances of the can and cap and provide resistance to thermal deformation occurring during the welding process.
[0052] The above main weld can be formed on the above tack weld. Accordingly, the tack weld can overlap the main weld.
[0053] The weld depth and / or weld area of the third weld may be smaller than that of the second weld.
[0054] The weld depth and / or weld area of the second weld may be smaller than that of the first weld.
[0055] The section where the third weld is formed in the circumferential direction can be configured so as not to overlap the section where the first weld is formed. Accordingly, the laser can be prevented from encountering the boundary surface of the third weld, i.e., the tangible weld, in the section where triple welding is performed, thereby ensuring stable propagation of the weld pool.
[0056] The section where the third weld is formed in the circumferential direction can overlap the section where the second weld is formed. Since this has a relationship between a conventional tack weld and a main weld, the sealing reliability of the second weld can be guaranteed.
[0057] The above can connection portion may include a first portion in contact with the side wall member and a second portion in contact with the cap.
[0058] The first portion may include an abutting outer surface facing the inner surface of the side wall member in the radial direction. A first section, which is at least a portion of the axial direction of the abutting outer surface, may be in contact with the inner surface of the side wall member.
[0059] The above second portion may include a cap mating surface that faces and contacts the inner surface of the cap in the axial direction.
[0060] The above cap may include a joint outer surface facing the inner surface of the side wall member in the radial direction.
[0061] The outer surface of the above cap can be in contact with the inner surface of the side wall member in the radial direction.
[0062] The cap may include a collector plate mating surface defined by an axial inner surface of the cap and facing and contacting a cap mating surface of a can connection portion of the collector plate in the axial direction.
[0063] The above-mentioned outer surface of the above-mentioned cap may be arranged axially and radially outside the abutting surface of the current collector plate.
[0064] The cap may include a sloped surface that is positioned radially inward from the axial inner surface of the tab and extends axially inward as it goes radially inward.
[0065] The above-mentioned inclined surface can be in contact with at least the corner portions of the axial outer end and the radial inner end of the can connection portion of the above-mentioned current collector plate.
[0066] Accordingly, the centers of the collector plate and the cap can be aligned.
[0067] Accordingly, the axial outer end of the can connection can receive a force that spreads outward in the radial direction.
[0068] The outer diameter of the first section of the above-mentioned outer surface of the abutment is larger than the inner diameter of the inner surface of the side wall member in contact therewith. Accordingly, the first section of the above-mentioned outer surface of the abutment can be forcibly pressed into the side wall member.
[0069] The above-mentioned collector plate may be softer than the side wall members of the can.
[0070] At one axial end, the inner diameter of the side wall member can be expanded.
[0071] The side wall member may include an inner diameter expansion portion in which the inner diameter of the side wall member is expanded, a first inner surface provided on an axial inner side of the inner diameter expansion portion, and a second inner surface provided on an axial outer side of the inner diameter expansion portion and having an inner diameter larger than that of the first inner surface.
[0072] The outer surface of the above can connection part can face and come into contact with the second inner surface.
[0073] The outer surface of the above cap may face or be in contact with the second inner surface.
[0074] The outer diameter of the first section of the above-mentioned outer surface may be larger than the inner diameter of the above-mentioned first inner surface, and may correspond to or be smaller than the inner diameter of the above-mentioned second inner surface.
[0075] The above can connection portion may be in a form that extends axially outward from a bend portion that bends a current collector plate extending radially outward axially outward.
[0076] When the outer diameter of the above-mentioned outer circumferential surface is set to be slightly larger than the inner diameter of the second inner circumferential surface, the above-mentioned outer circumferential surface is pressed into the second inner circumferential surface during the process of inserting the current collector plate, so that the above-mentioned outer circumferential surface and the second inner circumferential surface can be brought into close contact in the radial direction.
[0077] As a result, with the collector plate inserted, the outer diameter of the abutting outer surface can correspond to the inner diameter of the second inner surface.
[0078] The axial end of the joint outer surface of the cap and the inner surface of the side wall member, which face each other radially, can be exposed axially outward.
[0079] The first welding portion and the second welding portion may be formed by a laser irradiating the axial end of the inner surface of the side wall member and the outer surface of the cap from the axial outer side of the battery cell.
[0080] At this time, since the outer surface of the current collector plate, which is positioned axially inner than the cap, faces and comes into contact with the inner surface of the side wall member, the laser can be prevented from being directly irradiated into the internal space of the can.
[0081] The above inner diameter expansion portion can prevent internal penetration of laser that may enter through the gap between the side wall member and the collector plate.
[0082] The above-mentioned current collector plate may have a higher thermal conductivity than the side wall member. Accordingly, the heat generated when forming the first and second welded portions is distributed to the electrode assembly through the current collector plate, thereby preventing the welding heat from damaging the separator of the electrode assembly.
[0083] An overhang portion that protrudes further outward in the axial direction than the cap may be provided on one axial end of the above side wall member.
[0084] The above overhang can be welded to the welding area of the inner surface of the side wall member and the joint outer surface of the cap during the process of forming the first and second weld portions. Accordingly, the weld can be formed along the entire axial direction of the joint outer surface of the cap, despite variations in the welding process.
[0085] The above overhang portion may be melted during the process of forming the first and second weld portions, which are the main welds. Accordingly, the height of the battery cell may be determined by the surface of the cap, and as a result, the height dimension of the battery cell may be maintained at a constant level.
[0086] The present invention provides a method for manufacturing the above-described battery cell.
[0087] The battery cell includes a can including a bottom member, a side wall member connected to the bottom member and extending in an axial direction, and a cap covering an open end provided at one axial end of the side wall member, and an electrode assembly accommodated inside the can.
[0088] The method for manufacturing such a battery cell may include a preparatory step of bonding a current collector to an electrode tab provided at an end of the axial end of the electrode assembly facing the open end.
[0089] The above manufacturing method includes a first step of inserting the current collector into the can and contacting the outer surface of the can connection portion provided on the radial outer edge of the current collector with the inner surface of the side wall member.
[0090] The above manufacturing method includes a second step of covering the open end of the side wall member with a cap, radially facing the inner surface of the side wall member with a joint outer surface provided at the edge of the cap, and axially contacting the abutting surface of the collector plate with the abutting surface of the cap of the collector plate.
[0091]
[0092] The above manufacturing method includes a third step of forming a weld at a contact portion between the inner surface of the side wall member and the outer surface of the cap.
[0093] At this time, the overhang portion of the side wall member that protrudes further axially than the cap can be welded to the welding area of the inner surface of the side wall member and the outer surface of the cap.
[0094] In the third step, a laser is irradiated from the axial outer side to the abutting portion of the inner surface of the side wall member and the joint outer surface of the cap in the axial direction, and while continuously irradiating along the circumferential direction, a first welding portion that welds the inner surface of the side wall member, the joint outer surface of the cap, and the can connection portion of the current collector together, and a second welding portion that welds at least the inner surface of the side wall member and the joint outer surface of the cap together are welded alternately.
[0095] At this time, the first welding part and the second welding part can be formed alternately so that the circumferential length of the second welding part is formed longer than the circumferential length of the first welding part.
[0096] An additional welding step can be performed between the second and third steps.
[0097] In the above-mentioned welding step, a third welding part can be formed at multiple locations spaced apart in the circumferential direction by welding the edge of the open end of the side wall member and the edge of the cap.
[0098] In the third step, the intensity of the laser irradiated in the section where the first weld is welded or the energy density of the laser irradiated area may be stronger or higher than the intensity of the laser irradiated in the section where the second weld is welded or the energy density of the laser irradiated area.
[0099] In the third step, the movement speed of the irradiated area of the laser irradiated in the section where the first welded part is welded and the movement speed of the irradiated area of the laser irradiated in the section where the second welded part is welded may be constant.
[0100] In the third step, the scan speed relative to the output of the laser in the section forming the first weld may be slower than the scan speed relative to the output of the laser in the section forming the second weld.
[0101] In the third step, the scan speed relative to the energy density of the irradiated area of the laser forming the first welded portion may be slower than the scan speed relative to the energy density of the irradiated area of the laser forming the second welded portion.
[0102] According to the present invention, compared to welding the entire circumferential section of the can, the collector plate, and the cap together, it is possible to ensure electrical connection of the collector plate and sealing of the can while suppressing the generation of welding heat.
[0103] In another aspect, according to the present invention, it is possible to sufficiently implement the required internal resistance and reliably seal the can while suppressing the generation of welding heat.
[0104] In another aspect, according to the present invention, weldability, stability, and durability can be secured while welding the side wall member, the cap, and the collector plate together.
[0105] In another aspect, according to the present invention, the assembly work of a battery cell can be significantly reduced by welding the side wall member, the cap, and the collector plate together.
[0106] In another aspect, according to the present invention, since welding does not need to be performed inside the can, the risk of foreign substances such as welding spatter penetrating into the electrode assembly and causing defects can be eliminated.
[0107] In another aspect, according to the present invention, the volume of the electrode assembly accommodated inside the can can be secured to the maximum extent, thereby increasing the energy density of the battery cell.

The above-mentioned bottom member (12) and side wall member (11) can be manufactured by forming a metal sheet having a nickel plated surface of steel using a deep drawing process, and trimming the front end of the side wall member (11) with a punch while holding it with a blank holder. Of course, the material of the can (10) is not limited to this.
[0152] A first electrode terminal (13) can be fitted into the hole. The first electrode terminal (13) can be fixed by being riveted to the bottom member (12). A gasket (14) can be interposed between the first electrode terminal (13) and the can (10). The gasket (14) is interposed between the first electrode terminal (13) and the bottom member (12), sealing the inside and the outside of the can (10) to prevent leakage of the electrolyte and electrically insulating the first electrode terminal (13) and the bottom member (12).
[0153] However, the method of connecting the first electrode terminal (13) and the bottom member (12) is not limited to this. For example, if there is a structure that can seal between the first electrode terminal (13) and the bottom member (12) and electrically insulate the first electrode terminal (13) and the bottom member (12), various other fixing methods, such as a bolt-nut joint method, a glass seal method, or a chrome coating & PP-MAH thermal bonding method, can also be applied.
[0154] The above first electrode terminal (13) has a first polarity, and the can (10) can have a second polarity opposite to the first polarity. That is, the bottom member (12) of the can (10), the side wall member (11) connected thereto, and the cap (16) connected to the side wall member (11), which will be described later, can all have a second polarity.
[0155] Accordingly, the battery cell may have both the first electrode terminal (13) and the second electrode terminal (15) positioned at the axial end, i.e., the closed end, provided with the bottom member (12). Then, the battery cell may have both the bus bar connected to the first electrode terminal (13) and the bus bar connected to the second electrode terminal (15) positioned at the upper portion of the battery cell.
[0156] In one example, the first electrode terminal (13) may be a positive terminal and the second electrode terminal (15) may be a negative terminal. Of course, the opposite may also be true.
[0157] An electrode assembly (20) is accommodated within the can (10). The electrode assembly (20) can be manufactured in the form of a jelly-roll by preparing a first electrode (21), a second electrode (22), and a separator (28) that extend in the longitudinal direction with a predetermined width as illustrated in FIG. 2, and forming a laminate by sequentially stacking the first electrode (21), the separator (28), the second electrode (22), and the separator (28) as illustrated in FIG. 3, and then winding this around a core shaft as illustrated in FIG. 4.
[0158] The above first electrode (21) may be an anode, and the above second electrode (22) may be a cathode. Of course, the opposite may also be the case.
[0159] The above first electrode (21) and second electrode (22) can be manufactured in the form of sheets. The electrode sheet is manufactured in the form in which an active material layer (24) is applied to the surface of a metal foil (23). The electrode sheet has a holding portion (25) region where the active material layer (24) is applied, and a non-coated portion (26) region where the active material layer (24) is not applied. The positive electrode sheet may have a non-coated portion (26) region on one side in the width direction. The negative electrode sheet may have a non-coated portion (26) region on the other side in the width direction.
[0160] The non-coated portion (26) may be exposed or protruded in the width direction of the laminate. The width direction of the laminate may mean a direction parallel to the winding axis of the electrode assembly (20). The non-coated portion (26) itself may function as an electrode tab (27).
[0161] In the above-mentioned blank portion (26), notches can be formed at a predetermined interval to form flag-shaped notching tabs (27).
[0162] In the embodiment, the notching tabs (27) are exemplified as having an equilateral trapezoidal shape. However, their shapes may be various, such as a semicircle, a semi-ellipse, a triangle, a rectangle, a parallelogram, etc.
[0163] In addition, in the embodiment, a form in which the notching tabs (27) arranged along the longitudinal direction have the same width is exemplified. However, the width of the notching tabs may be gradually or stepwise widened from the core side to the outer periphery side.
[0164] In addition, in the embodiment, a form in which the height of the notching tabs (27) gradually increases from the core side toward the outside is exemplified. However, the height of these notching tabs may be implemented in a form in which they are constant or gradually decrease.
[0165] In addition, in the embodiment, a structure is exemplified in which a notching tab (27) is deleted in a predetermined section adjacent to the core side of the plain portion (26) and in a predetermined section adjacent to the outer circumference side. However, it is of course possible that the notching tab may not be deleted in a predetermined section adjacent to the core side of the plain portion, and that the notching tab in a predetermined section adjacent to the outer circumference side of the plain portion may not be deleted.
[0166] In the jelly roll-shaped electrode assembly (20), the notched tab (27) can be bent radially and flattened as illustrated in FIG. 4. The notched tab (27) can be bent radially inward or outward. In the embodiment, a structure in which the notched tab (27) is bent radially inward is exemplified.
[0167] The above-mentioned notched tabs (27) can be bent one by one during the process of forming a jelly roll-shaped electrode assembly (20) by winding the laminate. Alternatively, the above-mentioned notched tabs (27) can be bent all at once after the laminate is wound to form a jelly roll-shaped electrode assembly.
[0168] The notching tabs (27) of the first electrode (21) and the notching tabs (27) of the second electrode (22), which are bent and overlapped in the radial direction in this way, can provide a plane that is substantially perpendicular to the axial direction at each of the axial ends of the electrode assembly (20).
[0169] As shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, the first collector plate (31) and the second collector plate (32) can be joined to a substantially flat surface provided by bending the notched tabs (27) exposed at both axial ends of the electrode assembly (20).
[0170] In the embodiment, the first collector plate (31) is exemplified as a positive collector plate and the second collector plate (32) is exemplified as a negative collector plate. The first collector plate (31) may be made of aluminum, and the second collector plate (32) may be made of copper.
[0171] The above-mentioned collector plate (31, 32) can be manufactured by punching, trimming, piercing, and bending a metal sheet.
[0172] Referring to FIG. 5, the first collector plate (31) may include a terminal connection portion (312) extending radially from the center, a rim portion (313) connected to an outer end of the terminal connection portion (312) and extending in a circumferential direction, and an electrode connection portion (314) extending from the rim portion (313) in a direction toward the core. The electrode connection portion (314) may be spaced apart from the terminal connection portion (312) in the radial direction. The center portion of the terminal connection portion (312) covers at least a portion of the core hollow portion of the electrode assembly (20). The center region of the terminal connection portion (312) may be coupled to the first electrode terminal (13).
[0173] The above electrode connection portion (314) can be joined to the notched tab (27) of the first electrode (21) of the electrode assembly (20) by laser welding or the like before placing the electrode assembly (20) into the can (10). The welding line of the laser can extend radially.
[0174] Referring to Fig. 6, the second collector plate (32) may have a hole (322) corresponding to the core hollow portion (winding center hole) of the electrode assembly (20). The second collector plate (32) may include an inner ring portion (321) provided in a form surrounding the core hollow portion, an electrode tab connection portion (323) extending radially from the inner ring portion (321), and a can connection portion (324) positioned further outside the electrode tab connection portion (323) and connected to the inner ring portion (321). The can connection portion (324) may have a rim shape surrounding the edge of the second collector plate (32).
[0175] The above electrode tab connection portion (323) can be joined to the notched tab (27) of the second electrode (22) of the electrode assembly (20) by laser welding or the like before placing the electrode assembly (20) into the can (10). The welding line of the laser can extend radially.
[0176] The first collector plate (31) and the second collector plate (32) can be joined to the electrode assembly (20) before placing the electrode assembly (20) into the can (10) as in the embodiment.
[0177] Of course, it is also possible to accommodate the electrode assembly (20) with only the first collector plate (31) joined in the can (10), and then insert the second collector plate (32) into the can (10) and join it to the electrode assembly (20).
[0178] As illustrated in FIGS. 7 and 8, the electrode assembly (20) can be accommodated in the can (10) in a state where the first collector plate (31) is aligned toward the bottom member (12) of the can (10). At this time, an insulator (19) may be interposed between the first collector plate (31) and the bottom member (12) of the can (10) to electrically insulate the first collector plate (31) from the bottom member (12). In a state where the electrode assembly (20) is inserted, the edge of the second collector plate (32) is in contact with the can (10).
[0179] In addition, the terminal connection portion (312) of the first collector plate (31) can be joined to the first electrode terminal (13) fixed to the can (10) by resistance welding, ultrasonic welding, laser welding, or the like. The welding device (A) for welding the first collector plate (31) and the first electrode terminal (13) can approach the center of the terminal connection portion (312) of the first collector plate (31) through the core hollow portion of the electrode assembly (20) from the open end of the can (10) and perform welding. Alternatively, the terminal connection portion (312) and the first electrode terminal (13) can be welded by irradiating a laser onto the inner surface of the center of the terminal connection portion (312) of the first collector plate (31) through the core hollow portion of the electrode assembly (20). Of course, in addition to this, the first collector plate (31) and the first electrode terminal (13) can also be joined by brazing or soldering methods. In other words, various methods can be applied to the first collector plate (31) and the first electrode terminal (13) as long as they can be electrically connected and fixed to each other.
[0180] In a state where the electrode assembly (20) is accommodated inside the can (10), the electrode tab (27) of the second electrode (22) and the second current collector (32) can be arranged to face the open end of the side wall member (11).
[0181] After the first collector plate (31) and the first electrode terminal (13) are joined, an electrolyte can be injected into the can (10).
[0182] After injecting the electrolyte, the open end of the side wall member (11) can be covered and closed by a cap (16) as shown in Fig. 9.
[0183] The edge of the above cap (16) can be brought into contact with the can (10) as shown in FIG. 10, and can also be brought into contact with the edge of the second collector plate (32).
[0184] Referring to FIGS. 11 and 12, the side wall member (11) of the can (10) may have an inner diameter expansion portion (113) on the open end side. The inner diameter expansion portion (113) may have an inclined surface shape provided on the inner surface of the side wall member (11) such that the inner diameter of the side wall member (11) increases as it goes outward in the axial direction. That is, the inner diameter expansion portion (113) may include an inclined surface shape provided on the inner surface of the side wall member (11) and extending radially outward as it goes outward in the axial direction.
[0185] Accordingly, the inner surface of the side wall member (11) may include a first inner surface (111) provided axially inwardly than the inner diameter expansion portion (113), and a second inner surface (115) provided axially outwardly than the inner diameter expansion portion (113).
[0186] The outer circumferential surface of the side wall member (11) may have a uniform diameter along the axial direction, while the second inner circumferential surface (115) may have an inner diameter greater than that of the first inner circumferential surface (111). Accordingly, the side wall member (11) may have a thickness measured in the radial direction at a portion where the second inner circumferential surface (115) is provided that is smaller than a thickness measured in the radial direction at a portion where the first inner circumferential surface (111) is provided.
[0187] The can connection portion (324) provided at the edge of the second collector plate (32) and electrically connected to the can (10) by contacting it may include a first portion that faces or comes into contact with the inner peripheral surface (111, 113, 115) of the side wall member (11) at least in part. The first portion may have an abutting outer peripheral surface (325) that faces or comes into contact with the inner peripheral surface (111, 113, 115) of the side wall member (11) in the radial direction.
[0188] The above can connection portion (324) may include a second portion that comes into contact with the cap (16). The second portion may be provided with a cap mating surface (326) that faces and comes into contact with the axial inner surface of the cap (16).
[0189] The second collector plate (32) may include a folded portion (327). The folded portion (327) provides a shape for folding the second collector plate (32), which extends radially outward, axially outward. The can connection portion (324) of the second collector plate (32) may be connected to the electrode tab connection portion (323) through the folded portion (327) and the inner ring portion (321) described above.
[0190] The above can connection portion (324) can be connected to the axial outer side of the above bend portion (327) and can have a shape extending axially outward from the above bend portion (327). Accordingly, the area and axial length of the mating outer surface (325) of the second collector plate (32) can be further secured.
[0191] The material of the above second collector plate (32) may be softer than the material of the side wall member (11).
[0192] The thermal conductivity of the second collector plate (32) may be higher than the thermal conductivity of the side wall member (11).
[0193] For example, the material of the second collector plate (32) may include copper. The material of the side wall member (11) may include iron. However, the materials of the second collector plate (32) and the side wall member (11) of the present invention are not limited thereby.
[0194] The outer diameter of the mating outer surface (325) of the above can connection portion (324) may be set larger than the inner diameter of the first inner surface (111). The outer diameter of the mating outer surface (325) may correspond to or be smaller than the inner diameter of the second inner surface (115).
[0195] Then, in the process of inserting the second collector plate (32), the bending portion (327) is elastically deformed and the abutting outer peripheral surface (325) is forcibly pressed into the first inner peripheral surface (111), so that the abutting outer peripheral surface (325) and the first inner peripheral surface (111) can be in close contact in the radial direction. Accordingly, as a result, the outer diameter of the first section (a) of the abutting outer peripheral surface (325) pressed into the first inner peripheral surface (111) in the axial direction corresponds to the inner diameter of the first inner peripheral surface (111).
[0196] In this way, by the multi-stage inner surface structure of the side wall member (11) and the can connection part (324) structure of the current collector plate (32), at least a portion of the axial direction of the abutting outer surface (325) can be reliably brought into close contact with the inner surface of the side wall member (11).
[0197] The above-mentioned bending portion (327) may provide a curved surface whose outer diameter gradually decreases from the axially inner end toward the axially inner side relative to the can connecting portion (324). In addition, the minimum outer diameter (d) of the curved surface measured from the lower end of the second collector plate (32) may be smaller than the inner diameter of the first inner peripheral surface (111). This shape may guide the can connecting portion (324) to be forcibly pressed into the first inner peripheral surface (111) during the process of inserting the second collector plate (32) into the inner space of the side wall member (11). Therefore, the process of forcibly pressing in the second collector plate (32) may be performed more easily.
[0198] Ultimately, according to the present invention, if only the dimensional relationship can be maintained so that the minimum outer diameter (d) of the bending portion (327) is smaller than the inner diameter of the first inner peripheral surface (111) of the side wall member (11), and the outer diameter of the abutting outer peripheral surface (325) of the second collector plate (32) is larger than the inner diameter of the first inner peripheral surface (111), despite the dimensional tolerance of the part, the first section (a) of the abutting outer peripheral surface (325) can be brought into close contact with the first inner peripheral surface (111) of the side wall member (11) at the forced fit portion (P). In addition, such dimensional management can be easily achieved.
[0199] Accordingly, in the present invention, even if a part of the laser (L) is irradiated into the inside of the can as shown in FIG. 13 during the welding process described later, the second inner circumferential surface (115), the mating outer circumferential surface (325), and the inner diameter expansion portion (113) block it, so that the laser (L) may not reach the component accommodated inside the can (10).
[0200] The cap (16) may be provided with a cap body (160), a thickness reduction portion (161), and a joint portion (17) in that order from the radial center to the outside. That is, the thickness reduction portion (161) may be provided adjacent to the radial outside of the cap body (160), and the joint portion (17) may be provided on the radial outside of the thickness reduction portion (161).
[0201] Accordingly, the first thickness (t1) of the joint (17) measured in the axial direction can be formed to be smaller than the second thickness (t2) of the cap body (160) measured in the axial direction.
[0202] At the joint portion (17) of the cap (16), a joint outer circumferential surface (171) may be provided that faces or comes into contact with the second inner circumferential surface (115) of the side wall member (11) in the radial direction. In addition, at the axial inner surface of the joint portion (17) of the cap (16), a collector plate mating surface (173) that faces and comes into contact with the cap mating surface (326) of the can connection portion (324) of the second collector plate (32) in the axial direction may be provided.
[0203] The welding part to be described later can be formed between the joint outer circumference (171) of the cap (16) and the second inner circumference (115) of the side wall member (11). Accordingly, even if welding is performed between the cap (16) and the side wall member (11) to a depth of the first thickness (t1), the abutting portion of the cap (16) and the side wall member (11) can be completely bonded and connected. Then, even if a bulging phenomenon occurs in the cap (16) due to an increase in the internal pressure of the can (10), stress concentration does not occur at the joint portion of the can (10) and the cap (16), and the thick cap body (160) can strongly resist the bulging.
[0204] The above thickness reduction portion (161) is a thickness change portion provided in the cap (16).
[0205] By appropriately selecting the position where the thickness reduction portion (161) is provided so that at least a part of the thickness reduction portion (161) can contact the second collector plate (32), the thickness reduction portion (161) of the cap (16) comes into contact with the second collector plate (32) during the process of inserting the cap (16), and the effect of facilitating alignment of the cap (16) can be enjoyed.
[0206] In order to enhance the alignment effect, the embodiment implemented the thickness reduction portion (161) in the form of a slope that extends axially outward as it goes radially outward of the cap (16).
[0207] In the process of inserting the cap (16) into the inside of the side wall member (11), the thickness reduction portion (161) in the form of an inclined surface can come into contact with the radially inner edge of the cap abutment surface (326). Accordingly, the axial outer end of the can connection portion (324) of the second collector plate (32) provided with the cap abutment surface (326) is pressed radially outward by the thickness reduction portion (161), so that it can be arranged closer to or in closer contact with the second inner peripheral surface (115) of the side wall member (11).
[0208] That is, the thickness reduction portion (161) in the form of the inclined surface can come into contact with the can connection portion (324) of the second collector plate (32) during the process of inserting the cap (16) into the open end of the side wall member (11), and can not only guide the alignment of the cap (16) with respect to the center of the second collector plate (32), but can also have the function of pressing the axial outer end of the can connection portion (324) of the second collector plate (32) radially outward to bring the axial outer end of the can connection portion (324) of the second collector plate (32) into close contact with the second inner peripheral surface (115) of the side wall member (11).
[0209] According to the cap (16) of the embodiment, the radial position of the thickness reduction portion (161) is positioned as close as possible to the welding area, so that the area of the cap body (160) that resists bulging can be secured as much as possible. In addition, by selecting the position of the thickness reduction portion (161), a guide function for aligning the cap (16) while making contact with the second collector plate (32) can also be provided.
[0210] In a state where the cap (16) is inserted into the open end of the side wall member (11), the joint outer circumferential surface (171) of the cap (16) and the mating outer circumferential surface (325) of the second collector plate (32) can face or contact very closely to the second inner circumferential surface (115) of the side wall member (11) in the radial direction. In other words, the joint outer circumferential surface (171) of the cap (16) can face or contact the second inner circumferential surface (115) in the radial direction, and the mating outer circumferential surface (325) of the can connection portion (324) can face or contact the second inner circumferential surface (115) in the radial direction further inward than the joint outer circumferential surface (171).
[0211] And, in the axial direction, the cap mating surface (326) provided on the axial outer end surface of the can connection portion (324) of the second collector plate (32) can be in contact with the collector plate mating surface (173) provided on the inner surface of the joint portion (17) of the cap (16).
[0212] According to this assembly structure, the insertion depth of the cap (16) can be accurately determined by the height (H) of the second collector plate (32), which can be influenced by the axial extension length of the can connecting portion (324).
[0213] Meanwhile, due to dimensional deviations in the component manufacturing process, etc., there may be some error in the outer diameter of the joint outer circumference (171) of the cap (16) and / or the inner diameter of the second inner circumference (115) of the side wall member (11) and / or the outer diameter of the mating outer circumference (325) of the second collector plate (32). Due to the occurrence of such error, there may be cases where the joint outer circumference (171) of the cap (16) and the mating outer circumference (325) of the second collector plate (32) do not come into close contact with the second inner circumference (115) of the side wall member (11). However, according to the battery cell structure of the present invention as described above, due to the structure including the forced fit portion (P) and the inner diameter expansion portion (113) as shown in FIG. 3, the risk of the laser (L) irradiated for welding penetrating into the can (10) and damaging the electrode assembly (20) can be significantly reduced.
[0214] According to one aspect of the present invention, as illustrated, the axial end of the joint outer surface (171) of the cap (16) and the inner surface of the side wall member (11), which are radially opposed to each other, can be exposed axially outward.
[0215] The cap (16) can be welded to the can (10) by a laser (L) irradiated to the axial end of the abutting portion of the outer surface (171) of the cap (16) and the second inner surface (115) of the side wall member (11) from the axial outer side of the battery cell.
[0216] The second collector plate (32) may be made of a material having a higher thermal conductivity than the side wall member (11). In this case, when the thermal conductivity of the side wall member (11) is relatively low, the risk of damage to the separator provided in the electrode assembly (20) due to heat conduction generated during welding can be reduced. The second collector plate (32) may be in contact with the side wall member (11). Therefore, the welding heat generated in the side wall member (11) by the laser may be conducted to the electrode assembly (20) through the second collector plate (32), and the conducted welding heat may be transmitted to the separator portion of the electrode assembly (20) facing the side wall member (11), thereby risking damage to the separator. However, as described above, when the thermal conductivity of the side wall member (11) is formed to be relatively low compared to that of the second collector plate (32), the risk of damage to the separator due to thermal conduction through the side wall member (11) can be reduced.
[0217] The process of electrically connecting the second collector plate (32) by joining it to the side wall member (11) of the can (10) and the process of sealing the can (10) by joining the edge of the cap (16) to the side wall member (11) of the can (10) can be performed together by seam welding.
[0218] By the above-described deep welding, the edge of the cap (16) can be sealedly joined to the side wall member (11) of the can (10), and at the same time, the second collector plate (32) can be joined to the side wall member (11) of the can (10).
[0219] Such deep welding can be performed by irradiating a laser (L) to the mating portion of the outer circumferential surface (171) of the cap (16) extending in the circumferential direction and the second inner circumferential surface (115) of the side wall member (11), as illustrated in FIG. 14, and scanning the entire circumferential direction along the mating portion with the laser.
[0220] As the scan investigation proceeds, the laser irradiation area (B) moves along the mating area (see C in Fig. 14), and accordingly, a weld pool is continuously generated, propagated, and solidified along the circumferential direction at the mating area.
[0221] When the constancy of the generation, propagation and solidification of the weld pool is secured during a single deep welding process, the quality of the weld area between the edge of the cap (16) and the end of the side wall member (11) of the can (10) is improved, so that the required sealing performance can be sufficiently secured.
[0222] According to an embodiment, prior to the above-described seam welding, preliminary welding is first performed to improve the conformity of the can (10) and the cap (16) and to improve the resistance to deformation of the can (10) and the cap (16) that may occur due to the welding heat during the main welding. In addition, the above-described seam welding may be performed as the main welding performed after the above-described preliminary welding.
[0223] The embodiment begins with the main welding being performed after the preliminary welding. However, it is of course possible for the core welding to be performed without the preliminary welding.
[0224] Referring to FIGS. 14 and 15, the above-described preliminary welding can be performed at multiple locations spaced apart along the circumferential direction of the abutting portion of the can (10) and the cap (16). Such preliminary welding can be performed to the extent of lightly fixing the can (10) and the cap (16) by irradiating a laser having, for example, a lower output or lower energy density compared to the main welding.
[0225] For reference, the energy density is proportional to the laser output divided by the area of the irradiated area. In other words, the higher the laser output, the higher the energy density, and the larger the area of the irradiated area, the lower the energy density.
[0226] The above-mentioned preliminary welding location and welding degree can be determined to maximize consistency and deformation resistance, while minimizing the possibility of weld pool propagation inhibition occurring at the boundary between the preliminary welded area and the main welding process. Accordingly, when scanning the laser along the circumferential direction during the main welding process, the constancy and stability of the weld pool can be secured.
[0227] The embodiment illustrates that the welded portion (W3) formed by the above welding is formed to have a minimum welding area at four locations, which is the minimum number of locations required, and is formed so that no discontinuity of the welding occurs at the welding interface.
[0228] The above-described seam welding as the main welding can be performed continuously along the circumferential direction at the abutting portion, but intermittently to form a first weld portion (W1) in which the can (10), the second collector plate (32), and the cap (16) are welded together, and to form a second weld portion (W2) in which at least the can (10) and the cap (16) are welded together in the remaining seam welding section.
[0229] This seam welding can be performed with a laser output, an area of the irradiated area, an energy density, and a scan speed that can form a second weld (W2) for sealing and fixing the can (10) and the cap (16) while basically suppressing the generation of welding heat as much as possible. Meanwhile, the seam welding can be performed by intermittently varying at least one of the laser output, the area of the irradiated area, the energy density, and the scan speed during the laser scanning process. By intermittently varying the conditions of the laser scan in this way, a first weld (W1), which is a triple weld in which the can (10), the cap (16), and the second collector plate (32) are welded together, can be formed.
[0230] The more formation points there are of the first weld (W1) and the longer the formation section, the lower the internal resistance can be.
[0231] However, in order to triple-weld the can (10), the cap (16), and the second collector plate (32) together, the welding depth must be deeper than the second weld (W2) or the welding cross-sectional area must be wider when viewed in the circumferential direction. However, this can cause a lot of welding heat. Therefore, it is preferable that the first weld (W1) be formed as small as possible within a line that can lower the internal resistance to the necessary degree. Referring to Fig. 16, an embodiment is exemplified in which four first welds (W1) are arranged at equal intervals, and each first weld (W1) is formed within a section of approximately 15 degrees in the circumferential direction.
[0232] In the section forming the first welded portion (W1), compared to the section forming the second welded portion (W2), it is necessary to satisfy at least one of the following conditions: an increase in the output or energy density of the laser, a decrease in the area of the irradiated area, and a decrease in the laser scan speed.
[0233] Meanwhile, since the process of forming the first welded portion (W1) is intermittently performed during the deep welding process of forming the second welded portion (W2), it is desirable to continuously maintain the stability and homeostasis of the weld pool maintained in the second welded portion (W2).
[0234] In consideration of these points, the embodiment proposes a method of increasing the energy density by increasing the laser output while maintaining the area of the irradiated area and the scan speed as much as possible when forming the first weld (W1) while forming the second weld (W2) during the laser scan welding process. According to this embodiment, when forming the second weld (W2) while forming the first weld (W1), the area of the irradiated area and the scan speed can be maintained as much as possible while reducing the laser output again.
[0235] And, in the output increase section where the second welding section (W2) is converted to the first welding section (W1) and in the output decrease section where the first welding section (W1) is converted to the second welding section (W2), it is desirable to control the output of the laser so that it increases or decreases continuously, rather than suddenly increasing or decreasing in a stepwise manner.
[0236] Additionally, the increase rate of output in the output increase section can be set to be greater than the decrease rate of output in the output decrease section.
[0237] When the laser, which was irradiated with the first output (low output) in the second welding section (W2), is increased to the second output (high output) higher than the first output in order to create the first welding section (W1), the output is increased very quickly at the first increase / decrease rate so that the generation of welding heat increases rapidly. Then, the generated welding heat is intensively used to melt the welding section before being conducted to another section, so that triple welding of the can (10), the cap (16), and the second collector plate (32) can be reliably performed, and the adverse effect of the welding heat being transmitted to the electrode assembly can be reduced.
[0238] When the laser, which was irradiated with the second output in the first welding section (W1), is lowered to the first output to create the first welding section (W1), the output can be reduced somewhat slowly with a second increase / decrease rate that is lower than the first increase / decrease rate, thereby allowing the molten pool to propagate stably.
[0239] Referring to FIGS. 16 to 19, in the circumferential direction, the first weld (W1) formation section is preferably arranged so as to deviate from the temporary weld, i.e., the third weld (W3) formation position. In other words, the first weld (W1) formation section and the third weld (W3) formation section may not overlap each other. In other words, the third weld (W3) formation section may be included in the second weld (W2) formation section.
[0240] However, if the degree of radio interference of the weld pool that may be caused by the third weld (W3) is not great, the third weld (W3) may be placed in the section where the first weld (W1) is formed.
[0241] Referring to Fig. 20, the side wall member (11) of the can (10) may be extended longer than the side wall member (11) of the previous embodiment. Accordingly, as illustrated in Fig. 20, when the second collector plate (32) and the cap (16) are inserted into the inside of the can (20), an overhang portion (117) that protrudes further axially outward than the cap (16) may be provided at the end of the side wall member (11). The side wall member (11) may have a relatively thinner thickness than the cap (16).
[0242] In this case, the overhang (117) can delay the melting point of the side wall member (11), which is relatively thinner than the cap (16), thereby reducing the difference in the melting points of the side wall member (11) and the cap (16). In the process of forming the weld, the overhang (117) can be melted and penetrate into the welding area of the second inner peripheral surface (115) of the side wall member (11) and the joint outer peripheral surface (171) of the cap (16) (see FIG. 13). Accordingly, despite the deviation in the welding process, the weld can be formed over the entire axial direction of the joint outer peripheral surface (171) of the cap (16).
[0243] In the section where the first welding portion (W1) is formed, the overhang portion (117) is completely melted and can be melted into the abutting portion of the second inner peripheral surface (115) of the side wall member (11), the joint outer peripheral surface (171) of the cap (16), and the can connection portion (324) of the second collector plate (32), as shown in FIG. 19.
[0244] In the section where the second welding portion (W2) is formed, the overhang portion (117) is completely melted and can be melted into the abutting portion of the second inner peripheral surface (115) of the side wall member (11) and the joint outer peripheral surface (171) of the cap (16), as illustrated in FIG. 17. Accordingly, the height of the battery cell can be determined by the outer surface of the cap (16). That is, according to a modified example, since the overhang portion (117) and the welding portion do not determine the height of the battery cell, the height dimension of the battery cell can be managed consistently as a result.
[0245] Referring to FIG. 21 below, a method for manufacturing the above-described battery cell is described.
[0246] According to the manufacturing method of the above battery cell, first, a can (10) with a first electrode terminal (13) fixed to a bottom member (12) is prepared, and an electrode assembly (20) with a first collector plate (31) and a second collector plate (32) bonded to each of the axial ends is prepared.
[0247] Then, the electrode assembly (20) is inserted and accommodated in the can (10) with the first collector plate (31) facing the bottom member (12). Then, the second collector plate (32) is positioned toward the open end of the can (10). In the process of accommodating the electrode assembly (20) in the can (10), the first section (a) of the abutting outer surface (325) of the can connecting portion (324) provided at the radially outer edge of the second collector plate (32) is brought into close contact with the first inner surface (111) of the side wall member (11).
[0248] Next, the first collector plate (31) and the first electrode terminal (13) are joined.
[0249] Then, the electrolyte is injected into the can (10).
[0250] After the electrolyte injection is completed, the open end of the side wall member (11) is covered with a cap (16), and the outer surface of the joint (171) and the collector plate mating surface (173) provided on the edge of the cap (16) are brought into contact with or face the second inner surface (115) of the side wall member (11) and the cap mating surface (326) of the second collector plate (32), respectively.
[0251] At this time, the thickness reduction portion (161) in the form of an inclined surface provided on the axial inner surface of the cap (16) is brought into contact with the can connection portion (324) of the second collector plate (32), thereby aligning the cap (16) and causing the outer peripheral surface (325) of the can connection portion (324) to be pressed toward the second inner peripheral surface (115) of the side wall member (11).
[0252] Next, welding is performed by irradiating a laser to the abutting portion of the second inner surface (115) of the side wall member (11) and the joint outer surface (171) of the cap (16) from the axial outer side in the axial direction.
[0253] At this time, the overhang portion (117) of the side wall member (11) that protrudes further axially outward than the cap (16) can be welded to the welding area of the inner surface of the side wall member (11) and the joint outer surface (171) of the cap (16).
[0254] When performing the above welding, the preliminary welding process can be performed first and then the main welding can be performed.
[0255] In the above-described preliminary welding process, a laser is irradiated to the abutting portion of the inner surface of the side wall member (11) and the joint outer surface (171) of the cap (16) from the axial outer side in the axial direction at multiple locations spaced apart along the circumferential direction, thereby forming a plurality of provisional welds (W3) by welding the inner surface of the side wall member (11) and the joint outer surface (171) of the cap (16). The above-described preliminary welding is performed at low power, so that the creation of a discontinuous surface can be suppressed.
[0256] The above welding may be omitted.
[0257] Next, in the welding process, a laser is irradiated to the abutting portion of the inner surface of the side wall member (11) and the joint outer surface (171) of the cap (16) in the axial direction from the axial outer side continuously along the circumferential direction, thereby forming a second welding portion (W2) in which at least the inner surface of the side wall member (11) and the joint outer surface (171) of the cap (16) are welded together.
[0258] At this time, in the process of forming the second welded portion (W2), by intermittently increasing the welding depth and / or welding cross-sectional area by adjusting at least one of the laser output, the area of the irradiated area, the energy density of the irradiated area, and the scan speed, the inner surface of the side wall member (11), the joint outer surface (171) of the cap (16), and the can connection portion (324) of the second current collector (32) can be welded together to form a first welded portion (W1) that forms a triple welded portion.
[0259] The battery cell (72) manufactured through the welding structure and welding process described above can be accommodated in the housing (71) of the battery pack (70) as illustrated in Fig. 22. The battery pack (70) may be configured using a battery module, which is an intermediate form of assembly, or the battery pack (70) may be configured directly without a battery module as illustrated.
[0260] Since the battery cell (72) described above has a large volume in itself, there is no particular difficulty in implementing a battery pack (70) even without using an intermediate structure called a battery module. Furthermore, the battery cell (72) has low internal resistance and a higher energy density. Accordingly, the energy density of a battery pack (70) equipped with the battery cell (72) can be implemented even higher.
[0261] A battery pack (70) with such a high energy density can store the same amount of energy while reducing its volume and weight. Therefore, when a battery pack (70) equipped with such battery cells (72) is installed in a vehicle, such as an automobile (80) that uses electricity as its energy source, as illustrated in FIG. 23, the vehicle's mileage per unit of energy consumed can be further increased.

Furthermore, the meaning and scope of the claims that follow, as well as all possible modifications and variations derived from their equivalent concepts, should be construed as encompassing the scope of the present invention.
