Description

Filters for communication devices

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a filter for a communication device.

[0002] The material described in this section merely provides background information for the present disclosure and does not constitute prior art.

[0003] Filters for communication devices, such as radio frequency filters, can be used for selective filtering of specific frequency bands. Filters for communication devices can be configured as a structure in which multiple resonators are connected.

[0004] A resonator is a circuit device that resonates at a specific frequency. A resonator can be constructed using a combination of inductors and capacitors, as an equivalent electronic circuit. A resonator can be installed within a cavity, such as a cylinder or a rectangular parallelepiped. A resonator can be installed as a dielectric resonance element (DR) or a metal resonance device. A resonator can induce resonance by ensuring that only the electromagnetic field at the natural frequency of the frequency band of interest exists within the cavity.

[0005] Conventional filters for communication devices are configured as a multi-stage structure in which multiple resonant stages are formed using multiple cavities, and the multiple resonant stages are sequentially connected. Such filters for communication devices have the problem of being bulky because they form a multi-stage structure using multiple resonant stages. Such filters for communication devices also have the problem of increased weight because additional components necessary for forming inductive coupling or capacitive coupling must be installed inside the cavity to enhance the skirt characteristics between the multiple resonators.

[0006] Conventional filters for communication devices use bolting to connect a connector (output connector) to a filter housing. Bolting the connector and filter housing together presents a problem: irregular contact between the connector and the filter housing. This irregular contact can lead to filter housing damage and insertion loss.

[0007] Meanwhile, in antenna devices to which Massive MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology has been applied, research is being conducted to minimize the thickness of internal components such as filters in order to produce a slimmer overall product. The filters mainly used for this purpose include MBF (Micro Bellows Filter) and CWF (Ceramic Waveguide Filter).

[0008] However, conventional filters require PCBs to be mounted on the upper and lower sides of the filter, with the filter in between, and thus the filter itself must be thick and large enough to withstand the weight. Furthermore, the large size of the filter makes it difficult to mount other electronic components in the free space between the upper and lower PCBs where the filter is mounted.

[0009] Accordingly, the present disclosure is intended to solve these problems, and its main purpose is to provide a filter for a communication device with reduced volume and weight.

[0010] In addition, the present disclosure has a primary purpose of providing a filter for a communication device that can reduce insertion loss due to the combination of multiple physical structures by minimizing the conventional bonding process for forming a cavity and providing a structure such as a resonator within the cavity.

[0011] In addition, the present disclosure has a main purpose of providing a filter for a communication device that can prevent loss of the filter and improve reliability of the product by reinforcing rigidity in product combination with a filter provided in a folding manner of a thin main plate with relatively low rigidity for fixing a PCB to the upper and lower parts of the filter.

[0012] The problems to be solved by the present invention are not limited to the problems mentioned above, and other problems not mentioned will be clearly understood by those skilled in the art from the description below.

[0013] According to one embodiment of the present disclosure for achieving this purpose, a filter for a communication device is provided, comprising: a filter housing including a cavity for performing frequency filtering; and at least one connector for inputting an electrical signal into the cavity or outputting an electrical signal input into the cavity to the outside of the cavity, wherein the filter housing is formed by folding at least a portion of a main plate formed as a conductive plate material.

[0014] As described above, according to the present embodiment, there is an effect of providing a filter for a communication device with reduced volume and weight.

[0015] In addition, there is an effect of providing a filter for a communication device that can reduce insertion loss due to the combination of multiple physical structures by minimizing the conventional bonding process for forming a cavity and providing a structure such as a resonator within the cavity.

[0016] In addition, there is an effect of providing a filter for communication devices that can prevent loss of the filter and improve reliability of the product by reinforcing rigidity in product combination with the filter provided in the form of a folding method of a thin main plate with relatively low rigidity for fixing the PCB to the upper and lower parts of the filter.

[0027] Hereinafter, some embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail using exemplary drawings. When designating components in each drawing, it should be noted that, where possible, identical components are given the same reference numerals, even if they appear in different drawings. Furthermore, when describing the present disclosure, detailed descriptions of related known components or functions will be omitted if they are deemed to obscure the gist of the present disclosure.

[0028] In describing components of embodiments according to the present disclosure, symbols such as first, second, i), ii), a), b), etc. may be used. These symbols are only for distinguishing the components from other components, and the nature, order, or sequence of the components are not limited by the symbols.

[0029] When a component is described as being 'connected', 'coupled' or 'connected' to another component, it should be understood that the component may be directly connected or connected to that other component, but that another component may also be 'connected', 'coupled' or 'connected' between the components.

[0030] When a part of a specification is said to 'include' or 'contain' a component, this does not mean that it excludes other components, but rather that it may include other components, unless explicitly stated otherwise.

[0031] Hereinafter, to describe the shape of a filter for a communication device according to the present disclosure, the terms length, width, and height of the filter for a communication device may be used. Length refers to the horizontal length based on a front view, width refers to the horizontal length based on a right-side view, and height refers to the vertical length based on a front view.

[0032] FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a filter for a communication device according to a first embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0033] Figure 2 is an exploded view of a filter housing according to the first embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0034] FIG. 3 is a left cross-sectional view of a filter for a communication device according to the first embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0035] Referring to FIGS. 1 to 3, a filter for communications apparatus (100) according to a first embodiment of the present disclosure may include all or part of a filter housing (110), at least one connector (120), a resonator panel (210), and a frequency tuning panel (220).

[0036] The filter housing (110) may include a cavity (112). The cavity (112) refers to an empty space inside the filter housing (110). The cavity (112) may induce propagation of an electrical signal. The cavity (112) may be provided to perform frequency filtering using resonance. That is, the frequency of the electrical signal introduced into the cavity (112) may be filtered by the resonance effect.

[0037] The filter housing (110) can be manufactured using a conductive plate. For example, the filter housing (110) can be manufactured using materials such as aluminum, copper, stainless steel, titanium, or nickel. Since the filter housing (110) is manufactured using a conductive plate, it has the effect of preventing electrical signals input into the filter housing (110) from leaking out of the filter housing (110). The filter housing (110) manufactured using such a material also has the effect of excellent durability and strong corrosion resistance.

[0038] The filter housing (110) may be placed between a plurality of boards. Here, the plurality of boards may refer to a printed circuit board (PCB, 130) or an antenna board (not shown) including at least one radiating element on the front surface. Accordingly, the filter (100) for a communication device may transmit and receive filtered signals between the plurality of boards using a connector (120).

[0039] The filter housing (110) may include an opening part (111) on the other side of the cavity (112). The opening part (111) refers to the open part of the filter housing (110) and the filter housing (110) located therein. Here, the other side of the cavity means the right side based on the front view. The opening part (111) may be configured by forming a step from the filter (100) for a communication device according to the first embodiment of the present disclosure. For example, when the filter housing (110) is viewed from the right side, the heights of the opening part (111) and the filter housing (110) are the same, but the width of the opening part (111) may be smaller than the width of the filter housing (110). The width of the opening part (111) may be the same size as the width or diameter of the supporting part (121). The opening (111) can be blocked by integrally combining the filter housing (110) and the connector (120). A detailed description of the method and shape of integrally combining the filter housing (110) with the connector (120) will be described later with reference to FIG. 7.

[0040] The filter housing (110) can be formed by folding at least a portion of the main plate (110-1 to 110-4), which is a conductive plate, and integrally joining the cover plate (110-5).

[0041] The main plate (110-1 to 110-4) may include a front forming panel (110-1), a bottom forming panel (110-4), a top forming panel (110-3), and a single-sided forming panel (110-2).

[0042] The front forming panel (110-1) can form the front part of the filter housing.

[0043] The single-sided forming panel (110-2) can be folded from one side of the front forming panel (110-1) to form one side of the filter housing (110).

[0044] The bottom surface forming panel (110-4) and the top surface forming panel (110-3) can be folded in the same direction from the lower and upper sides of the front surface forming panel (110-1) to form the bottom surface and the top surface of the filter housing (110), respectively.

[0045] The filter housing (110) and connector (120) can be integrally combined through the following process.

[0046] The main plates (110-1 to 110-4) are folded. The mutually contacting corners of the main plates (110-1 to 110-4) are integrally joined to form a three-dimensional shape. The main plates (110-1 to 110-4) and the connector (120) are integrally joined. The corners of the cover plate (110-5) are integrally joined to the corners of the main plates (110-1 to 110-4). The connector (120) and the cover plate (110-5) are integrally joined. In the present disclosure, the filter (100) for a communication device is described as having a rectangular parallelepiped shape, but the shape of the filter (100) for a communication device is not limited thereto. For example, the filter (100) for a communication device may be in the shape of a triangular prism or a pentagonal prism, and in this case, it should be noted that the shape or folding method of the main plate may be different from that described above.

[0047] As can be seen in Fig. 2, the upper surface forming panel (110-3) and the lower surface forming panel (110-4) can be configured in a shape for integrally combining with the connector (120).

[0048] As another example different from the first embodiment, the main plate (110-1 to 110-4) does not include a single-sided forming panel (110-2), the filter housing (110) has a plurality of openings, and the connector (120) can be integrally connected to the filter housing (110) to close the plurality of openings.

[0049] FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view of a filter for a communication device according to the first embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0050] FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional view of a filter for a communication device according to the first embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0051] FIG. 6 is a drawing showing the arrangement of a resonator panel and a frequency tuning panel according to the first embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0052] Referring to FIGS. 1 to 6, the resonator panel (210) and the frequency tuning panel (220) of the filter (100) for a communication device according to the first embodiment of the present disclosure will be described in detail.

[0053] The resonator panel (210) is arranged inside the cavity (112) and can filter the frequency of an electrical signal. The resonator panel (210) is connected to the connector (120), receives an electrical signal from the connector, filters the frequency, and transmits the frequency-filtered electrical signal to the connector (120). In order for the resonator panel (210) to generate a resonance effect and filter the frequency of the electrical signal, the resonator panel (210) may include all or part of a plurality of resonators (resonators, 211), a resonator connect bar (resonator connect bar, 212), and a plurality of resonant characteristic sections (resonant characteristic sections, 213).

[0054] The plurality of resonators (211) may be configured to form a single layer from the inside of the cavity (112). For example, when the filter (100) for a communication device according to the first embodiment of the present disclosure is viewed from the perspective of FIG. 3, the plurality of resonators (211) may appear to overlap each other. The plurality of resonators (211) may be arranged horizontally with respect to the longitudinal direction of the filter (100) for a communication device according to the first embodiment of the present disclosure to form a single layer.

[0055] The resonator connecting bar (212) can horizontally connect a plurality of resonators (211) in the longitudinal direction of the cavity (112). The resonator connecting bar (212) can include an input terminal (214) for connecting to a PCB (130) from one side of the cavity (112) and an output terminal (output section, 215) for connecting to a connector (120) from the other side of the cavity (112). The resonator connecting bar (212) can serve as an electrical wire that receives an electrical signal from the input terminal (214) and transmits it to each resonator (211). The electrical signal input to the input terminal (214) can reach each resonator (211) using the resonator connecting bar (212), be filtered, and then be transmitted to the outside of the cavity (112) using the output terminal (215).

[0056] The resonance characteristic section (213) can be formed by extending from the tip of each of the plurality of resonators (211). The resonance characteristic section (213) can overlap with the tuning bar (221) to adjust the resonance frequency. That is, a plurality of inductors and capacitors can be formed by utilizing the shape and arrangement of the resonance characteristic section (213) and the tuning bar (221).

[0057] The frequency tuning panel (220) is arranged inside the cavity (112) and can adjust the frequency characteristics of the filter (100) for a communication device according to the first embodiment of the present disclosure. The frequency tuning panel (220) may be configured as a rectangular shape with an empty interior. In order for the frequency tuning panel (220) to adjust the frequency characteristics, the frequency tuning panel (220) may include a plurality of tuning bars (221) and at least one coupling control bar (222).

[0058] The plurality of tuning bars (221) may be configured to form a single layer from the inside of the cavity (112). For example, when looking at the filter (100) for a communication device according to the first embodiment of the present disclosure based on the field of view of FIG. 3, the plurality of tuning bars (221) may appear to overlap each other. The plurality of tuning bars (221) may be arranged horizontally with respect to the longitudinal direction of the filter (100) for a communication device according to the first embodiment of the present disclosure to form a single layer. Each of the plurality of tuning bars (221) may be formed to extend from the inner end of the frequency tuning panel (220) toward the other end.

[0059] The coupling adjustment bar (222) may be formed to extend from the inner end of the frequency tuning panel (220) toward the other end. The coupling adjustment bar (222) may be arranged between adjacent tuning bars (221) among a plurality of tuning bars (221), and may be configured to form a single layer identical to the plurality of tuning bars (221).

[0060] The resonator panel (210) and the frequency tuning panel (220) may be arranged to be spaced apart from each other inside the cavity (112). Each resonator (211) of the resonator panel (210) and each tuning bar (221) of the frequency tuning panel (220) may be arranged to overlap each other. For example, as can be seen in FIG. 6, when viewed from the front or back of the filter (100) for a communication device according to the first embodiment of the present disclosure, each resonator (211) of the resonator panel (210) and each tuning bar (221) of the frequency tuning panel (220) may overlap each other.

[0061] FIG. 7 is an upward perspective view of a connector according to the first embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0062] Referring to FIGS. 1 to 7, a connector (120) according to the first embodiment of the present disclosure will be described in detail.

[0063] The connector may be configured to receive an electrical signal from the PCB (130) and input the signal into one side of the cavity (112) or output the signal from the other side of the cavity (112). Here, the one side of the cavity (112) is the opposite side of the other side of the cavity (112) described above, and in this disclosure, it is described as the left side based on the front view. In order to receive an electrical signal from the PCB (130) and input the signal into the cavity (112), the connector may be provided as a separate component from the resonator panel (210). Alternatively, the connector may be configured in the form of an input section (214) or an output section (215) as a part of the resonator panel (210). In this case, the connector may be coupled to the front surface of the PCB (130) using the SMT (Surface Mount Technology) method.

[0064] The connector (120) may be of a hollow type and may be configured such that the output terminal (215) penetrates the connector (120) in the height direction of the cavity (112). The height of the connector (120) may be configured to have a value greater than the height of the filter housing (110). The connector (120) may be configured using a material having higher rigidity than the main plates (110-1 to 110-4). Since the connector (120) has a height greater than the height of the filter housing (110) and higher rigidity than the main plates (110-1 to 110-4), when a plurality of boards and the communication device filter (100) are coupled, there is an effect of protecting the communication device filter (100) and reducing insertion loss. For example, when connecting a plurality of boards and a communication device filter (100) using a connector (120), a predetermined space may be generated between the plurality of boards and the communication device filter (100) due to the height of the connector (120). Due to the presence of the predetermined space, contact between the filter housing (110) and the plurality of boards can be prevented, thereby reducing damage to the filter housing (110) and insertion loss. In addition, since the weight of the boards joined at the upper part of the filter is received by the connector, not the filter, and the weight is received toward the lower part of the connector (i.e., the lower part of the connector that penetrates the filter and is seated on the lower board part), the weight of the board part does not directly affect the filter, thereby preventing damage to the filter and signal loss.

[0065] The connector (120) can be manufactured by forming a metal plate using a deep drawing method and then using a cutting method. The deep drawing method refers to press machining that creates a hollow container by applying pressure to a punch and die having a vertically deep shape at the center of a flat plate.

[0066] When the connector (120) is manufactured using a deep drawing method and a cutting method, the manufacturing process may be as follows.

[0067] A metal plate is placed on the die of a deep-drawing press. The press's punch is operated to repeatedly pressurize the metal plate. As the punch presses the metal plate, it deforms along the shape of the die. The metal shape is completed using a cutting method such as laser cutting, needle cutting, or punch cutting.

[0068] Since the connector (120) is manufactured using a deep drawing method and a cutting method, the loss of materials constituting the connector (120) can be minimized during the manufacturing process of the connector (120).

[0069] The connector (120) may include a supporting part (121) and a radial part (122).

[0070] The supporting portion (121) may be formed to extend vertically from the lower portion of the inner surface of the filter housing (110) toward the upper surface of the filter housing (110). The supporting portion (121) may be configured to be integrally connected with the filter housing (110) to block the opening (111). Accordingly, the height of the supporting portion (121) may be equal to or greater than the height of the filter (100) for a communication device according to the first embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0071] The supporting part (121) may include a first support body (121-1) and a second support body (121-2). When at least one board among a plurality of boards is coupled to the connector (120) and normal stress is generated in the connector (120) in the direction of the PCB (130), the first support body (121-1) may play a role in supporting the stiffness of the connector (120). The first support body (121-1) may be opened in the direction in which the cavity (112) is located. By opening a portion of the first support body (121-1), the cavity (112) and the connector (120) may form a space. The second support body (121-2) may extend in the longitudinal direction of the cavity (112) from the open end of the first support body (121-1). Based on the front view, the second auxiliary body (121-2) can overlap with at least a portion of the opening (111) and be integrally connected to each other. The second auxiliary body (121-2) can be integrally connected to at least a portion of the filter housing (110) using a welding or brazing method.

[0072] The radiating portion (122) may be configured to extend from one end of the supporting portion (121) and protrude toward the rear surface of the antenna board. The radiating portion (122) may support the rear surface of the antenna board. The radiating portion (122) may serve to ground the filter housing (110). The radiating portion (122) may include a first portion (122-1) and a second portion (122-2).

[0073] The first part (122-1) may be formed by directly extending from one end of the supporting part (121). The first part (122-1) may serve as a support for forming the second part (122-2). A dielectric (120-1) may be inserted into the first part (122-1). The dielectric (120-1) serves to reinforce the strength of the connector (120), prevent foreign substances from entering the cavity (112), and prevent loss of electrical signals input into the cavity (112). The dielectric (120-1) may be composed of a material such as Teflon, polypropylene, polyamide, polystyrene, polycarbonate, polyphenylenesulfide, polyvinylfluoride, or polytetrafluoroethylene.

[0074] The second portion (122-2) may be formed to radiate in the opposite direction of the supporting portion (121) from the first portion (122-1). For example, the cross-section of the second portion (122-2) may have a wider width as it gets further away from the first portion (122-1). When connecting the board and the communication device filter (100), the communication device filter (100) according to the present disclosure has the effect of increasing the connection width by using the radiating portion (122) to prevent irregular disconnection with the board due to vibration, etc.

[0075] FIG. 8 is a perspective view of a filter for a communication device according to a second embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0076] Figure 9 is an exploded view of a filter housing according to a second embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0077] FIG. 10 is a downward perspective view of a connector according to a second embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0078] Referring to FIGS. 8 to 10, a filter (700) for a communication device according to the second embodiment of the present disclosure may include all or part of a filter housing (710), at least one connector (720), a resonator panel (not shown), and a frequency tuning panel (not shown).

[0079] The components according to the second embodiment of the present disclosure may be the same as the components according to the first embodiment, except for the components specifically described below, and therefore, a detailed description of the same parts is omitted.

[0080] The filter housing (710) according to the second embodiment of the present disclosure does not include an opening (111). At least a portion of the connector (720) may be inserted through the filter housing (710) according to the second embodiment of the present disclosure and integrally connected with the filter housing (710).

[0081] Accordingly, the main plates (710-1 to 710-5) according to the second embodiment of the present disclosure may further include a right-sided forming panel (710-4), unlike the main plates (110-1 to 110-4) according to the first embodiment. The right-sided forming panel (710-4) may be folded from the front forming panel (710-1) in the same direction as the left-sided forming panel (710-2) to form the right-sided forming panel of the filter housing (710).

[0082] At least one of the front forming panel (710-1), the left cross-section forming panel (710-2), the right cross-section forming panel (710-4), the bottom forming panel (710-5), the top forming panel (710-3), and the cover plate (710-6) may include a hole for at least one connector (720) to pass through.

[0083] At least one connector (720) can be installed and coupled to the filter housing (710) by penetrating the hole and cavity (712).

[0084] The connector (720) may include a supporting part (721), a connecting washer part (722), and a radiating part (723).

[0085] The supporting part (721) may include a first auxiliary body (721-1) and a second auxiliary body (721-2) as in the first embodiment of the present disclosure. However, unlike the first embodiment of the present disclosure, the second auxiliary body (721-2) may be configured to block the open end formed by the first auxiliary body (721-1) from the upper end of the first auxiliary body. The reason why the second auxiliary body (721-2) blocks at least a portion of the open end of the first auxiliary body (721-1) is to reinforce the rigidity of the connector (720) and reduce the amount of material lost by the cutting method. The lower end of the first auxiliary body (721-1) may be integrally connected to the lower surface.

[0086] The coupling washer portion (722) may be formed to extend from the lower end of the radiating portion (723). The coupling washer portion (722) may be integrally connected to the upper or lower surface of the filter housing (710). The coupling washer portion (722) may be integrally connected to the filter housing (710) using a welding or brazing method.

[0087] When assembling each component of a filter for a communication device, the connector and the filter housing are not integrally connected to each other. If the connector and the filter housing are not integrally connected to each other, irregular disconnection of the filter housing and the connector may occur. Irregular disconnection of the filter housing and the connector may damage the filter housing and cause loss of the electrical signal input into the cavity. The filter (100, 700) for a communication device according to the present disclosure has the effect of preventing irregular disconnection of the connector (120, 720) and the filter housing (110, 710) by integrally connecting the connector (120, 720) and the filter housing (110, 710).

[0088] The filter (100, 700) for communication devices according to the present disclosure is manufactured by folding the main plates (110-1 to 110-4, 710-1 to 710-5), thereby minimizing the manufacturing process of the filter (100, 700) for communication devices and reducing the manufacturing cost.
