Device for removing impurities contained in oil
[0001] Cross-reference to related applications
[0002] This application claims the benefit of priority to Republic of Korea Patent Application No. 10-2023-0129158, filed September 26, 2023, and Republic of Korea Patent Application No. 10-2024-0127488, filed September 20, 2024, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety.
[0003] The present invention relates to a device for removing impurities contained in oil.
[0004] The process of removing impurities from organic and inorganic oil components plays a very important role depending on the intended use of the oil.
[0005] Organic oils are primarily extracted from plants or animals and contain impurities such as moisture, organic matter, solids, and various biological substances. In contrast, inorganic oils are composed of petrochemical components and contain impurities such as moisture, salt water, solids, and organic matter.
[0006] To increase oil purity, solid impurities are removed through sedimentation or specific gravity differences. Fine solids are then removed through mechanical filtration. This filtering process can utilize a variety of structures depending on the oil's properties and solid particle size, with metal or polymer meshes being used.
[0007] After solids are removed, ionic components such as sodium (Na) and potassium (K) and water remain as impurities. To address this, an additional washing process is introduced, using purified water to remove impurities along with the water.
[0008] After the refining process, gravity separation is applied to separate the remaining water and oil. During this process, the oil is placed at the top and the water at the bottom, resulting in separation. To increase separation efficiency, the oil is heated to reduce viscosity and the remaining moisture is minimized by evaporating the water beyond its boiling point.
[0009] This method is energy-intensive and requires proper management to prevent oil deterioration and overheating. Furthermore, cooling the heated oil incurs costs.
[0010] The introduction of additional equipment or explosion-proof devices to improve refining efficiency increases the complexity and cost of the equipment configuration, as well as operating costs. Furthermore, these processes are only economically viable in large-scale facilities, making them difficult to implement in small-scale industries.
[0011] This limits technological approaches to improving refining efficiency in small-scale operations. Therefore, the development of alternative technologies suitable for small-scale industries is needed.
[0012] The present invention aims to solve the problems of the oil refining process by providing a device for removing impurities contained in oil that can replace the existing complex refining process through low energy consumption and simple structure and can be used even in small-scale applications.
[0013] An impurity removal device according to one embodiment of the present invention includes a removal housing having a filter space formed therein, an inlet connected to the filter space through which oil containing impurities can be introduced, an oil discharge port, and an impurity discharge port formed therein, and a filter unit disposed in the filter space and capable of removing impurities contained in the introduced oil.
[0014] The above filter unit may include a plurality of filter elements arranged at intervals between the inlet and the oil discharge port.
[0015] The mesh of the filter member becomes denser as it goes from the inlet to the oil outlet, the inlet and the impurity outlet are formed on the lower side of the removal housing, the oil outlet is formed on the upper side of the removal housing, and the introduced oil can pass through the filter unit and be discharged through the oil outlet.
[0016] The second filter space between the first filter element and the second filter element of the above filter unit, and the third filter space between the second filter element and the third filter element can be connected to the impurity discharge port.
[0017] The device for removing impurities contained in the oil may further include a baffle disposed in the filter space and positioned between the inlet and the impurity discharge port.
[0018] The above-mentioned bulkhead is connected to the first filter element from the bottom of the above-mentioned filter space, and the above-mentioned second filter space and the above-mentioned third filter space can be connected to the impurity discharge port through a flow path between the above-mentioned bulkhead and the inner surface of the above-mentioned removal housing.
[0019] The floor of the above filter space is inclined from one side to the other, and the impurity discharge port can be connected to the other side of the floor of the above filter space.
[0020] The floor of the above filter space can be inclined at an angle of 15° to 25° with respect to an imaginary horizontal line.
[0021] The mesh of the above filter part may be 100 to 3000.
[0022] The above filter unit may be a superhydrophobic filter.
[0023] The device for removing impurities contained in the oil may further include a storage unit connected to the inlet and capable of storing oil containing impurities.
[0024] The storage unit may include a storage housing having a storage space formed therein, an inlet pipe formed in the storage housing and supplying oil containing impurities to the storage space, a level control valve positioned in the storage space and installed in the inlet pipe and controlling the water level of the storage space, and a supply pipe formed in the storage housing and connecting the storage space and the filter space and supplying the oil containing impurities to the filter space.
[0025] Based on the virtual horizon, the center height of the inlet is lower than the center height of the supply pipe, so that oil containing impurities can flow from the storage space to the filter space by its own weight.
[0026] It may further include a pretreatment unit connected to the above inlet pipe and capable of heating oil containing impurities.
[0027] According to an embodiment of the present invention, there is an effect of efficiently removing impurities in oil, reducing maintenance costs, and maximizing oil treatment efficiency through optimization of multi-stage filtering and impurity discharge structure.
[0028] According to an embodiment of the present invention, the filter section comprises multiple filter elements, arranged such that the mesh becomes finer as it progresses from the inlet to the oil outlet. This allows for the gradual filtration of impurities in the oil, achieving even more precise filtration upon reaching the final outlet, thereby significantly improving the purity of the oil.
[0029] According to an embodiment of the present invention, the multi-stage filtering structure has the effect of simultaneously increasing the efficiency and durability of the filter, as each filter first removes impurities of a specific size, and then processes smaller particles from the rear.
[0030] According to an embodiment of the present invention, the space between the filter elements is directly connected to the impurity discharge port, enabling efficient discharge of impurities collected during the filtering process. This facilitates device maintenance and reduces filter clogging, thereby maintaining continuous filtering performance.
[0031] According to an embodiment of the present invention, the structure with a sloped floor has the effect of facilitating the discharge of impurities without the need for manual or additional energy, as impurities are naturally collected in the discharge port by gravity.
[0032] According to an embodiment of the present invention, since the oil flows naturally by its own weight from the storage unit to the filter space, no pump or additional power is required, resulting in energy savings.
[0033] According to an embodiment of the present invention, by adjusting the mesh size of the filter member, impurities of a specific size can be effectively filtered out during the filtering process, and since it is designed to be able to filter out impurities of various sizes, there is an effect of maintaining the cleanliness of the oil at a high level.
[0034] According to an embodiment of the present invention, the filter element is configured as a superhydrophobic filter, which effectively removes moisture contained in oil. This prevents corrosion or performance degradation caused by moisture in the oil, thereby extending the life of the mechanical system.
[0035] According to an embodiment of the present invention, impurities in the oil can be pretreated by heating the oil through a pretreatment unit, and the viscosity of the oil is lowered during the heating process, so that filtering can be performed more smoothly, which has the effect of reducing the filter load and increasing the processing efficiency of the entire system.
[0036] According to an embodiment of the present invention, the arrangement of the bulkhead structure and the filter element effectively controls the flow of oil, thereby efficiently removing impurities accumulated in the filter element, thereby increasing the maintenance cycle of the device and reducing operating costs.
[0037] Figure 1 is a schematic diagram showing a device for removing impurities contained in oil according to one embodiment of the present invention.
[0038] Figure 2 is an enlarged view showing the removal section of Figure 1.
[0039] Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings so that those skilled in the art can easily implement the present invention. However, the present invention may be implemented in various different forms and is not limited to the embodiments described herein. Like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the specification.
[0040] Then, an impurity removal device contained in an O-ring according to one embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. 1.
[0041] Referring to Fig. 1, the device (1) for removing impurities contained in oil according to the present embodiment includes a pretreatment unit (10), a storage unit (30), and a removal unit, and replaces existing complex purification processes through low energy consumption and a simple structure. The removal unit includes a removal housing (71), a filter unit (72), and a partition wall (73).
[0042] The pretreatment unit (10) includes a pretreatment housing (11) and a filter member (12), and adds oil to lower the viscosity so that it can flow easily.
[0043]
[0044] *A pretreatment space (111) is formed inside the pretreatment housing (11). On one side of the pretreatment housing (11), a pretreatment inlet (112) is formed through which oil containing impurities (moisture, salt water, solids, organic and inorganic substances, etc.) flows in. On the other side of the pretreatment housing (11), a pretreatment outlet (113) is formed through which oil containing pretreated impurities is discharged.
[0045] Oil containing impurities can be introduced into the pretreatment space (111) through the pretreatment inlet (112), and oil containing impurities exceeding the capacity of the pretreatment space (111) can be discharged through the pretreatment outlet (113). Oil containing impurities can be introduced into the interior of the pretreatment housing (11) by its own weight or the pressure of the pump.
[0046] A heating means (20) such as a burner or heater is disposed in the pretreatment housing (11). Oil containing impurities in the pretreatment space (111) can be heated by the heating means (20). The heating temperature can be 20°C to 70°C. If oil containing impurities is heated to 20°C, heating efficiency is reduced, and if it is heated above 70°C, the amount of oil vapor evaporated from the oil increases, which may cause a safety hazard, and the superhydrophobic performance may be reduced, which may reduce moisture removal efficiency. The heating temperature may vary depending on the type of oil. The heating temperature may vary depending on the type of oil. For example, it may be around 60°C for heavy oil, and less than 30°C for light oil. By heating, the oil can maintain a viscosity for refining.
[0047] A filtering member (12) is detachably installed inside the pretreatment housing (11). The filtering member (12) is slidably connected to the pretreatment housing (11). The filtering member (12) has a mesh structure. The mesh of the filtering member (12) may be 300 to 2000.
[0048] The filter member (12) can remove solid foreign substances contained in oil. The filter member (12) can be made of metal.
[0049] Oil containing impurities heated in the pretreatment unit (10) has a lower viscosity and can be discharged through the pretreatment outlet (113) and flow into the storage unit (30).
[0050] However, the preprocessing unit (10) may be omitted.
[0051] The storage unit (30) includes a storage housing (31), an inlet pipe (32), a level control valve (34), and a supply pipe (33), and receives and stores oil containing impurities supplied from the pretreatment unit (10) and supplies it to the removal housing (41). At this time, the storage unit (30) can primarily separate moisture and oil by utilizing the difference in specific gravity between moisture and oil among the impurities contained in the O-ring.
[0052] A storage space (311) is formed inside the storage housing (31). Oil containing impurities from the pretreatment unit (10) can be introduced and stored in the storage space (311). At this time, the oil introduced from the pretreatment unit (10) can be introduced by flowing under its own weight without using a pump.
[0053] The inlet pipe (32) is installed on the upper surface of the storage housing (31). The upper part of the inlet pipe (32) protrudes from the upper surface of the storage housing (31) and the lower part is in the storage space (311). The lower end (32a) of the inlet pipe (32) is separated from the floor of the storage space (311).
[0054] The inlet pipe (32) is connected to the pretreatment outlet (113) of the pretreatment unit (10). Thus, oil containing impurities with foreign substances removed and lowered viscosity can be stored by flowing into the storage space (311) through the inlet pipe (32).
[0055] A supply pipe (33) is formed on the upper side of the storage housing (31). The supply pipe (33) has a preset diameter. The center (33a) of the supply pipe (33) and the lower end (32a) of the inlet pipe (32) are positioned on the same line. Oil containing impurities in the storage space (311) can be discharged through the supply pipe (33) and flow to the removal unit.
[0056] The water level control valve (34) is connected to the inlet pipe (32) in the storage space (311). The water level control valve (34) has a float structure. The water level control valve (34) is located outside the inlet pipe (32) and has an outer circumferential diameter larger than the outer circumferential diameter of the inlet pipe (32), and includes a valve body (342) that can be in contact with or separated from the lower end (32a) of the inlet pipe (32), and a rod (341) that protrudes from the valve body (342) and is inserted into the inside of the inlet pipe (32) and guides the valve body (342) when it is in contact with or separated from the inlet pipe (32). The outer circumference of the rod (341) is spaced apart from the inner circumference of the inlet pipe (32). The rod (341) prevents the valve body (342) from leaving the inlet pipe (32) when it is separated from the inlet pipe (32).
[0057] This level control valve (34) can be located on the water surface of the storage space (311). When the water level rises, the valve body (342) can block the lower end (32a) of the inlet pipe (32). Oil containing impurities cannot flow from the pretreatment unit (10) into the storage space (311). When oil containing impurities is discharged through the supply pipe (33), the water level of the storage space (311) decreases, and the valve body (342) can fall from the lower end (32a) of the inlet pipe (32). When the lower end (32a) of the inlet pipe (32) is opened, oil containing impurities from the pretreatment unit (10) can flow into the storage space (311).
[0058] Since the center of the supply pipe (33) and the lower end (32a) of the inlet pipe (32) are positioned on the same line, the valve body (342) and the lower end (32a) of the inlet pipe (32) are always spaced apart by a constant interval, so that oil containing impurities can continuously flow into the storage space (311) by its own weight at a constant flow rate.
[0059] Meanwhile, moisture (water) and oil (oil) have different properties and do not mix. Therefore, moisture and oil form layers in the storage space (311), which causes the oil to separate and float on top of the moisture. A drain hole (not shown) is formed at the bottom of the storage housing (31) to drain the moisture separated from the oil.
[0060] Accordingly, in the storage unit (30), moisture and oil are primarily separated due to the difference in density, and the oil can be discharged to the outside of the storage housing (31) through the supply pipe (33). At this time, micro-moisture (micro water or micro droplets) may not be completely separated and may be discharged while being included in the oil.
[0061] However, the storage unit (30) may be omitted.
[0062] Next, referring to Fig. 2, the separation unit including the removal housing (71), the filter unit (72), and the bulkhead (73) will be described.
[0063] A filter space (71a) is formed inside the removal housing (71) to separate impurities and oil. The filter space (71a) has a preset volume.
[0064] An inlet (716) connected to a supply pipe (33) is formed on one side of the lower portion of the removal housing (71). The center height (716a) of the inlet (716) is lower than the center height (33b) of the supply pipe (33) relative to an imaginary horizontal line (H). Accordingly, oil containing impurities in the storage space (311) can flow into the filter space (71a) through the inlet (716) by its own weight.
[0065] An impurity discharge port (718) connected to a filter space (71a) is formed on the lower side of the removal housing (71). Impurities in the filter space (71a) can be discharged to the outside of the removal housing (71) through the impurity discharge port (718). An oil discharge port (717) connected to the filter space (71a) is formed on the upper side of the removal housing (71). Oil from which impurities have been removed can be discharged to the outside of the removal housing (71) through the oil discharge port (717).
[0066] Meanwhile, the floor (715) of the filter space (71a) is inclined with respect to an imaginary horizontal line (H). Here, the imaginary horizontal line (H) is a line parallel to the lower surface of the removal housing (71). The floor (715) of the filter space (71a) is inclined at an angle of 15° to 25° with respect to the horizontal line (H). The floor (715) may be inclined at an angle of 20° with respect to the horizontal line (H). If the floor (715) is inclined at an angle less than 15°, impurities accumulate in the space of the filter space, and drainage is not smooth. If the floor (715) is formed at an angle exceeding 25°, oil introduced into the filter space (71a) through the inlet (716) may rapidly flow along the inclined floor and move quickly from the inlet (716) to the impurity discharge port (718). As a result, the filtering time may be reduced, and impurity removal may be insufficient.
[0067] A bulkhead (73) is arranged in the filter space (71a) and installed along the vertical direction of the removal housing (71). The bulkhead (73) is close to the inner other side surface (71b) of the filter space (71a). The upper part of the bulkhead (73) is separated from the inner upper surface of the filter space (71a), and the lower part is separated from the inclined floor (715) of the filter space (71a). Both sides of the bulkhead (73) are connected to the inner side surface of the removal housing (71). A flow path (731) is formed between the bulkhead (73) and the inner other side surface (71b).
[0068] The filter member (72) includes a first filter member (721), a second filter member (722), and a third filter member (723) and has a mesh structure with fine holes. The mesh of the first filter member (721), the second filter member (722), and the third filter member (723) may be 100 to 3000. For example, the first filter member (721) may be 100 mesh, the second filter member (722) may be 2000 mesh, and the third filter member (723) may be 3000 mesh.
[0069] The first to third filter members (721, 722, 723) can be made of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), silicon nanoparticles, fluoropolymer, silica nanoparticles, graphene-based materials, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), carbon nanotubes, and the like. Accordingly, the first to third filter members (721, 722, 723) have superhydrophobic properties.
[0070] The first filter member (721), the second filter member (722), and the third filter member (723) are sequentially arranged between the inlet (716) and the oil discharge port (717) in the filter space (71a). The mesh of the first filter member (721), the second filter member (722), and the third filter member (723) becomes denser as it goes from the inlet (716) to the oil discharge port (717). By the arrangement of the first filter member (721), the second filter member (722), and the third filter member (723), the filter space (71a) is divided into first to fourth filter spaces (711 to 714).
[0071] The first filter member (721) is connected to the periphery of the filter space (71a) and the partition wall (73). The first filter space (711) is formed between the first filter member (721) and the inclined inner bottom (715) of the removal housing (71). The first filter space (711) is connected to the inlet (716) and the impurity discharge port (718). Accordingly, oil containing impurities in the storage unit (30) can flow into the first filter space (711). At this time, the solid impurities can move along the inclined bottom (715) toward the impurity discharge port (718). The oil can rise up the first filter space (711) and pass through the first filter member (721). At this time, moisture cannot pass through the first filter member (721) due to the difference in contact angle on the superhydrophobic surface. Moisture in the first filter space (711) can be discharged through the impurity discharge port (718). Here, fine moisture having particles smaller than the mesh of the first filter member (721) can pass through the first filter member (721) together with oil.
[0072] The second filter member (722) is separated from the first filter member (721). A second filter space (712) is formed between the first filter member (721) and the second filter member (722). The periphery of the second filter member (722) is coupled along the inner periphery of the removal housing (71), but at least a portion thereof is separated from the other side (71b), so that the second filter space (712) has a connection portion (712a) connected to the flow path (731).
[0073] Oil passing through the first filter element (721) flows into the second filter space (712) and fills the second filter space (712). The oil passes through the second filter element (722). Fine moisture having particles smaller than the mesh of the second filter element (722) can pass through the second filter element (722). The fine moisture can flow into the flow path (731) through the connection portion (712a) and be drained through the impurity discharge port (718).
[0074] The third filter member (723) is separated from the second filter member (722). The third filter member (723) is separated from the upper surface of the filter space (71a). The third filter member (723) is located below a portion where an oil discharge port (717) is formed. A third filter space (713) is formed between the third filter member (723) and the second filter member (722). Oil passing through the second filter member (722) fills the third filter space (713). A fourth filter space (714) is formed between the third filter member (723) and the upper surface of the filter space (71a). The third filter space (713) is connected to the flow path (731) by a connecting portion (713a), and the fourth filter space (714) is connected to the oil discharge port (717).
[0075] Oil in the third filter space (713) passes through the third filter member (723) and flows into the fourth filter space (714). Oil in the fourth filter space (714) can be discharged outside the removal housing (71) through the oil discharge port (717). In addition, fine moisture having particles smaller than the mesh of the third filter member (723) can flow into the flow path (731) through the connection portion (713a) and be drained through the impurity discharge port (718).
[0076] The filter element (72) can respond to the particle sizes of various fine moisture, i.e., micro droplets, present in oil by arranging filter elements (721 to 723) with different meshes. The arrangement of filter elements (721 to 723) with different meshes in multiple layers has the effect of improving moisture separation efficiency.
[0077] Accordingly, as the mesh of each filter element (721 to 723) gradually becomes denser, large moisture particles are filtered out by the first filter element (721), medium-sized moisture particles are filtered out by the second filter element (722), and the smallest fine moisture particles are filtered out by the third filter element (723). Accordingly, the step-by-step filtering method has the effect of greatly improving the overall filtering efficiency, as each filter element effectively removes impurities of a specific size.
[0078] The following describes the operation of the device (1) for removing impurities contained in the oil described above.
[0079] The pretreatment unit (10) heats the oil containing impurities introduced into the pretreatment space (111) to a temperature ranging from 25°C to 70°C. At this time, for heavy oils generally used as fuel, the temperature is around 60°C, and for light oils, the temperature may be 20°C or higher. The heating temperature range can achieve sufficient viscosity reduction for moisture removal in light and heavy oils, and minimize the generation of oil vapor.
[0080] Oil containing impurities heated and pretreated in the pretreatment space (111) is introduced into the storage space (311) by its own weight without using the pressure of the pump. Oil containing impurities in the storage space (311) is introduced into the first filter space (711) through the inlet (412).
[0081] Solid impurities contained in the oil flowing into the first filter space (711) flow through the inclined floor (715) to the impurity discharge port (718) and are discharged. Moisture and oil are separated in the first filter space (711) by their specific gravity differences, with moisture located at the bottom and oil located at the top.
[0082] Oil containing impurities continuously flows into the first filter space (711) through the inlet (716) and overflows the first filter space (711). The oil containing impurities passes through the first filter member (721). At this time, the oil passes through the first filter member (721) and flows into the second filter space (712). Among the impurities, moisture does not pass through the first filter member (721) due to superhydrophobicity. However, fine moisture having particles smaller than the mesh of the first filter member (721) can pass through the first filter member (721) together with the oil and flow into the second filter space (712). The moisture in the first filter space (711) can be discharged through the impurity discharge port (718).
[0083] Oil in the second filter space (712) can pass through the second filter member (722) and flow into the third filter space (712). At this time, fine moisture having particles smaller than the mesh of the second filter member (722) can pass through the second filter member (722) together with the oil and flow into the third filter space (712). Meanwhile, moisture that does not pass through the second filter member (722) can be discharged to the impurity discharge port (718) through the connection portion (712a) and the flow path (731).
[0084] Oil in the third filter space (713) passes through the third filter member (723) and flows into the fourth filter space (714). Meanwhile, moisture that does not pass through the third filter member (723) can be discharged to the impurity discharge port (718) through the connecting portion (713a) and the flow path (731). Oil in the fourth filter space (714) is discharged to the outside of the removal housing (71) through the oil discharge port (717).
[0085] Accordingly, instead of processing all sizes of moisture particles at once, large particles are filtered out first, reducing the burden on subsequent filter elements and improving the overall durability of the filter elements.
[0086] For reference, the above description and drawings do not limit the oil-containing impurity removal device of the present invention to separating oil and water. It should be understood that the oil-containing impurity removal device of the present invention can separate oil and all liquids by utilizing differences in specific gravity and contact angles on superhydrophobic surfaces, such as mineral oil, organic oil, and inorganic oil.
[0087] Although the preferred embodiments of the present invention have been described in detail above, the scope of the present invention is not limited thereto, and various modifications and improvements made by those skilled in the art using the basic concept of the present invention defined in the following claims also fall within the scope of the present invention.
