Description

[0001] A PLEAT MAKING DEVICE

[0002] The present invention relates to a pleat making device. More particularly but not exclusively it relates to a pleat making device for making pleats on fabric.

[0003] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0004] Sarees are clothing items traditionally worn around the waist, particularly in the Indian subcontinent and these days also in many other parts of the world. These garments are celebrated for their beauty and adaptability, suitable for various cultural and everyday occasions. However, donning these garments can be a complex process, especially for those that are less experienced, with many often-requiring assistance.

[0005] A major step in the process of putting on a saree (or sari) is the creation of pleats or folds made in the fabric around the waist. Typically, wearers use their fingers and both hands to make these pleats, and younger generations and other inexperienced saree wearers often need help with this. This manual pleat making process is inconvenient, tiring, and does not always result in evenly sized pleats. Even experienced saree wearers spend time and effort on this task.

[0006] Many people either do not know how to create these pleats or find the process challenging, leading them to rely on assistance or avoid wearing sarees altogether. This limits the accessibility and enjoyment of this traditional attire.

[0007] Further, the pleats often require securing with multiple pins, like safety pins. However, the use of pins can lead to discomfort for the wearer and pose a poking hazard. Moreover, when pins are unavailable, achieving proper saree security without affecting its appearance can be a daunting task, if not impossible. Delicate and thin fabrics from which the sarees are usually made (e.g., silk) are particularly susceptible to snagging when using pins.

[0008] Additionally, wearing a saree can be problematic when using restrooms, as the pleats may become distorted. In such cases, re-adjusting the pleats and re-donning the saree can be a time-consuming and challenging task. Also, traditional methods of creating pleats involve-time consuming and labourintensive processes that lack precision and versatility whether it is a saree or any other fabric requiring pleats.

[0009] Similar difficulties may arise in other fabrics that are configured to be worn as an article of clothing which may require pleating.

[0010] US Patent No. 8573453 introduces a basic a pleat-making device. However, such a device has several drawbacks. For example, it lacks a mechanism to easily adjust the width of individual pleats. Additionally, the support members in that device are not stable and require both hands for operation, making the pleat-creation process cumbersome and timeconsuming. Furthermore, the fixed distance between the two support members limits adaptability, providing minimal flexibility to accommodate variations in designs or styles during the pleating process.

[0011] OBJECT OF THE INVENTION

[0012] It is an object of the present invention to provide a pleat making device which overcomes or at least partially ameliorates some of the abovementioned disadvantages or which at least provides the public with a useful choice.

[0132] DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0133] The present invention relates to a pleat making device that is designed to create pleats on a fabric requiring pleats. Although, the device is primarily for use in making pleats in sarees, it may be used for making pleats in many other suitable fabrics or articles of clothing such as but not limited to a sarong, headscarf, kilt etc.

[0134] With reference to the above drawings, in which similar features are generally indicated by similar numerals, a pleat making device according to a first aspect of the invention is generally indicated by the numeral 100. As shown in FIGs 1 -3, the device 100 comprises a plurality of support members 1 10.

[0135] The support members 1 10 are independently adjustable in length between two opposing ends of each support member. With such support members that are independently adjustable in length the device 100 can enable individual control over the width of each individual pleat thereby facilitating variations in designs or styles during the pleating process. The two opposing ends are a first end 1 10e and a second end 1 10b. The device further comprises at least one connector 102 for connecting the support members 1 10 so that when connected by the connector(s) 102, the support members are configured to be substantially parallel to and spaced apart from each other as shown in FIG 3.

[0136] Each of the support members further comprises (is equipped with or incorporates) at least two clamping members 1 12a, 112b. The clamping members 112a, 112b are spaced apart from one another and are configured to secure a portion of fabric to that support member when the fabric engages with or is wrapped around that support member.

[0137] As shown in FIG. 6, each of the support members 1 10 may comprise a front surface 1 10a,rear surface 1 10b, a top portion 1 10c and a bottom portion 1 10d. The first end 1 10e, and a second end 110f are also shown. These support members 110 may be adjustable in length between the first and second ends 1 10e, 110f by telescopic arrangement. This enables the customisation of pleat width W1.

[0138] For each support member 1 10, at least the front surface 110a may be designed to be in contact with the fabric such as a saree 300 and the rear surface 110b may be positioned opposite the front surface 1 10a. The top portion 110c may be located at the upper end of the support member 1 10 and the bottom portion 1 10d may be located at the lower end of the support member 1 10. The first end 110e may be one end of the support member and the second end 1 10f may be the other end of the support member 1 10 that is located opposite the first end 110e. Thus, for each support member 1 10, the first end 110e may be the first side of that support member 1 10 and second end 1 10f may be the second side that is located opposite the first side of that support member 1 10.

[0139] As mentioned above, each support members 110 may be telescopic, allowing for easy adjustment of their length between the first end 1 10e and second end 1 10f. This adjustability facilitates control over the width W1 of the pleats 350 that are created using the device 100. With such telescopic arrangement in individual support member, the width W1 of each pleat can be individually controlled easily thereby facilitating pleats 350 of variable sizes to be formed. This can also allow for variations in designs or styles during the pleating process. Each support member 110 may comprise at least two telescopic members 111a, 111b for facilitating telescopic arrangement of the support members 110. Each support member 110 may comprise more than two telescopic members 111a, 111 b. When the support member is in its fully retracted condition, the length of the support member 110 may be 3 inches or about 3 inches. Similarly, when in its fully extended condition, the length of the support member may be 8 inches or about 8 inches. However, these dimensions are nonlimiting examples of the length of each support member from its first end to its second end. The support member may be designed to be less than 3 inches when in its fully retracted condition and more than 8 inches when in its fully extended condition. In one embodiment, each support member may be between 0.5 inch and 3.5 inches in the fully retracted condition. In one embodiment, each support member may be between 4 inches and 12 inches in the fully extended condition. In one embodiment, the support member may be 0.5 inch to 3 inches in the fully retracted condition and between 3.5 and 12 inches in the fully extended condition. The width W1 of each pleat may be dependent on the length L1 of its associated support member between the first end and the second end. The height H1 of each support member may be 1 inch or about 1 inch.

[0140] The clamping members 112a, 112b may be either integrally formed or attached to the front surface, and may be spaced apart from each other. The primary function of these clamping members 112a, 112b is to securely fasten a portion of fabric such as a saree 300 to the support member 110 front surface 110a of the support member when the fabric engages with or is wrapped around it in a manner shown in FIG 10. Thus, these clamping members serve the function of securing a portion of fabric to the support member, (in the example shown front surface 110a of the support member 110) when the fabric is wrapped around the support member. In the embodiment shown in FIGsl -3, there are two clamping members 112a, 112b. One of the clamping members 112a may be positioned at or near the first end 110e, while the other clamping member 112b is placed at or near the second end 110f. Such arrangement can ensure a secure and stable attachment of the fabric during the pleat making process. In each support member 110, the clamping members 112a, 112b may be integrated into the front surface of that support member 112 and each clamping member 112a, 112b may be adapted to securely hold a pleat onto the front surface of the support member 110 and release the pleat from the front surface of the support member without the need for application of continuous manual pressure.

[0141] Therefore, each clamping member 112a, 112b may be configured to transition between a clamping condition and an unclamping condition. In the clamping condition, each clamping member may be adapted to maintain its clamped state without requiring continuous manual pressure. Similarly, in the unclamping condition, each clamping member may be adapted to remain in its unclamped state without necessitating continuous manual pressure. Each clamping member may be configured to move between the clamping position and unclamping position by the application of an external force. Each clamping member may be a binder clip or work similar to a binder clip.

[0142] Thus, the clamping members, 112a and 112b may be integral components of each support member 110 that are designed to provide a secure and convenient method for the fastening of the fabric, such as a saree, to the front surface 110a of the support member during the pleat making process. For example, the clamping members may be spring-loaded clips with or without serrated jaws that securely grasp the fabric when wrapped around the support member 110. Once the fabric is positioned, the clamping members 112a, 112b maintain a firm hold without the need for continuous manual pressure, ensuring a stable attachment. Each clamping member may have only one jaw and the fabric may be clamped by the jaw of that clamping member between the front surface of the support member and the jaw. When it is time to release the pleat, a simple release mechanism, such as but not limited to a push button or lever (for example, the level present on the same clamping member) or similar may disengage the clamping members 112a and 112b, allowing the fabric to be easily removed. Such arrangement can simplify and accelerate the pleat making process by eliminating the need for constant hand-applied tension and offering a more convenient method of securing and releasing fabric.

[0143] The clamping members 112a, 112b may be located at or near the first end and the second end of each support member 110 so that they do not obstruct the ability of that support member 110 to retract and extend as facilitated by its telescopic arrangement. Although, not shown, each support member may comprise a third clamping member located between the first clamping member 1 12a and the second clamping member 1 12b. In one embodiment, the distance between the first clamping member 112a and the third clamping member may be same or substantially the same as the distance between the second clamping member 1 12b and the third clamping member when the at least one support member comprising the third clamping member is in a fully extended position.

[0144] The device 100 may also include at least one connector 102 for engaging with the top portion of each support member 110. In the example, shown in FIGs 1 -3, there is a total of six connectors 102 and four support members 1 10. However, the number of connectors 102 may be less than or more than six. Similarly, the number of support members 1 10 may also be less than or more than four. In some embodiments, there may be only one connector connecting all support members. In some embodiment, there may be only two support members 1 10 and only one or two connectors 102 connecting such support members 110.

[0145] The connector(s) 102 may be a rigid member or a substantially rigid member. The connector(s) may have limited flexibility. The connector(s) 102 may be adapted to engage with the top portion of each support member 1 10. By engaging with each support member, the connector(s) 102 allows the device 100 to gain structural stability whilst ensuring uniformity in the pleat making process. By engaging with the top portion of each support member 1 10 the connector(s) 102 do not create any obstructions when making the pleats 350. The engagement of the connector(s) 102 to each support member 1 10 may be via snap fit arrangement. For example, as shown in FIGs 4 and 5, each connector may be in a form of a telescopic rod comprising a telescopic body 102a with a first hook 102b located at first end of the telescopic body and a second hook 102c located at the second end of the telescopic body 102a. A first complementary feature 102b' and second complementary feature 102c' may be located at the top portion of each support members 1 10. When the device 100 is in an assembled form, the first hook 102b and / or the second hook 102c may be configured to detachably engage with the first complementary feature 102b' (preferably by snap fit arrangement) or the second complementary feature 102c' (preferably by snap fit arrangement). Instead of the hooks 102b, 120c being located at the connector(s) and the complementary features 102b', 102c' being located at the support members 1 10, the hooks 102b, 120c may be located at the support members and the complementary features may be located at the connector(s) 102. Many other suitable engagement means may be possible for detachable or releasable coupling between the connector(s) and the support members 110. The support members may not be able to swivel when a connector engages with them. In one example, the connector(s) may be welded or fixedly attached to the support members 102. However, it is most preferred that the connector(s) are detachably attached to the support members 1 10 as such detachable arrangement provides several advantages, some of which are discussed later in this specification.

[0146] When a connector 102 is in fully retracted condition as shown in FIG 4, the length of the connector may be 3 inches or about 3 inches. Similarly, when a connector is in fully extended condition as shown in FIG 5, the length of the connector may be 8 inches or about inches. However, these dimensions are non-limiting examples of the length of each connector 102. The connector(s) 102 may be designed to be less than 3 inches when in a fully retracted condition and more than 8 inches when in a fully extended condition. In one embodiment, connector(s) 102 may be between 0.5 inch and 3.5 inches in the fully retracted condition. In one embodiment, the connector(s) 102 may be between 4 inches and 12 inches in the fully extended condition. In one embodiment, the connector(s) may be 0.5 inch to 3 inches in the fully retracted condition and between 3.5 inches and 12 inches in the fully extended condition. As it can be appreciated, the length of the connector(s) 102 determines the distance between two adjacent support members 1 10. In one example, the connector(s) may be formed as plates that are adjustable in length (e.g., telescopic plates).

[0147] As shown, each support member 1 10 may comprise at least one securing member 1 14 on at least one of the first end and the second end of each support member 112. The securing member(s) may comprise a first arm and a second arm and a hinge portion connecting the first and second arms allowing pivotal movement of the second arm with respect to the first arm. Each securing member 1 14 may be in a form of a clip that is adapted to clamp a pleat. In one embodiment the securing member(s) may be bobby pin(s). When the device 100 is in the assembled form as shown in FIG 3, each securing member may be oriented alternately so a pleat receiving end of each securing member is facing downwards. Use of such securing member helps facilitate the secure looping of pleats and ensure neat lines on the pleats. Alternatively, each of the first and second ends 110e, 1 10f may comprise a securing member 1 14a, 1 14b as shown in FIG 7. This is advantageous as then it is no longer necessary to ensure that the securing members are oriented alternately when the device is in assembled form. Further, having one securing member 1 14 on each 1 10e, 1 10f mean the securing members 114a, 114b more properly secure the looping of the pleats to ensure neat lines on the pleats or maintain neatly aligned pleats.

[0148] Each of the support members may be a planar member. For example, the support members may be in the form of plates. Such a support member with planar surface can provide stability and rigidity to the device, ensuring that it can effectively hold and manipulate fabric during the pleat making process. Such a planar member or plates allow for precise folding and pleat making when the fabric is wrapped around substantially flat surface of such planar members as the user can position fabric on such surfaces without difficulty. Such planar shape can ensure that the fabric lies flat and evenly distributed, resulting in well- defined pleats. In one embodiment, the support members may have at least one planar surface. In one example, each or at least one support member may be a rod or a tubular member. However, it is most preferred that the support members are planar members to allow sufficient surface area for the pleats to abut to during the pleat making process for proper and convenient pleating.

[0149] The pleat making device 100 may comprise varying numbers of support members 1 10, typically ranging from two to twelve, enabling users to create pleats of different widths and numbers (for example, with options ranging from two to twelve pleats). The device comprises two or at least two, three or at least three, four or at least four, five or at least five, six or at least six, seven or at least seven, eight or at least eight, nine or at least nine, ten or at least ten, eleven or at least eleven, or twelve or at least twelve support members 1 10. Preferably, the device comprises a maximum of twelve support members 1 10.

[0150] As already described above, the connector(s) 102 may be detachable from the support members 1 10. The connector(s) may be telescopic connector(s) that are adjustable in length. By being adjustable in length, the connectors can enable users to customise the spacing between the support members 110 of the device 100. By incorporating these connector(s) 102, the present invention can provide more flexibility to create various fabric widths and pleat sizes and can also provide more variations in designs and styles. The width of pleats can be tailored according to specific design or functional requirements. Users can easily extend or retract the connectors allowing for control over the distance between the support members 1 10. This can allow uniform and visually appealing pleats across a wide range of fabric types.

[0151] The support members 1 10, the connector(s), the clamping member(s) and / or any other components of the device 100 may be made from plastic, stainless steel and / or any other suitable metallic or non-metallic material. Preferably, the connector(s), the clamping member(s) and / or their components of the device 100 are made from light weight material so that they are not too heavy, and are easy to hold and use.

[0152] An example of assembling the device 100 from its unassembled condition as shown in FIG 1 to its assembled condition is self-event from FIGs 1 -3 and need not be explained in detail. However, in summary, each support member 1 10 may be placed in a substantially vertical configuration / orientation with top portion of the support member being facing the top and the bottom portion of the support member facing the bottom. Each connector 102 may be moved in the direction of arrows 1 11 and then in direction of arrows 1 13 until each connector 102 extends between and couples with two adjacent support members as shown in FIG 3. To disassemble the device 100 from its assembled condition to its disassembled condition, the process may be reversed. It is to be appreciated that this method of assembly and disassembly is given by way of example only and many other suitable methods for assembling and disassembling of the device 100 may be possible.

[0153] As shown in FIG 3, in the assembled condition each of the support members may be substantially parallel to each other when connected by the connector(s) 102.

[0154] Each support member 110 may further comprises a locking mechanism for enabling the secure fixation of the adjustment such as telescopic adjustment of the length of the support member 1 10. Similarly, the connector(s) may further comprise a locking mechanism for enabling the secure fixation of the telescopic adjustment of the length of the connector(s).

[0155] Each support member is contoured or textured to enhance the grip and secure attachment of the fabric to the support member. There may be measurement markings on each support member to enable precise and consistent pleat spacing during the pleatmaking process. FIGs 12-13 sequentially show one example of a method of making pleats using the pleat making device 100 when in the assembled form as shown in FIG 3. In this example, the fabric is a saree 300.

[0156] Before beginning the pleating, the length of the support members 1 10 may be adjusted to a desired length as per the desired pleat width W1. This may be done by extending or retracting the support members.

[0157] To initiate the pleating process, a portion of the saree 300 may be taken and folded over a first support member 1 10' in a way that the fabric is wrapped around it forming a first pleat. The first support member 1 10' may be the support member that is most proximal to the wearer 400. The wearer 400 may be a person or a mannequin.

[0158] The clamping members 1 12a and 112b, located on the front surface 1 10a of the first support member 1 10' may be used to clamp or secure the portion of the saree 300 (portion of the top edge of the saree) that abuts the front surface 110a of the first support member 1 10. Those clamping members will securely hold the saree 300 in place without the need for continuous manual pressure. Optionally, this first support member 110' can serve as a base member or base attaching to an innerwear (e.g., tights or petticoat) of the wearer 400 at the waist area, allowing the pleat making device 100 to sit independently on the body of the wearer 400 without needing to hold it, freeing up the hands of the wearer 400 to weave the saree 300 through the pleat making device 100 in the direction indicated by arrow 311 in FIG 1 1.

[0159] The width of this pleat will be determined by the length of the first support member 1 10' between its first end 1 10e and the second end 1 10f. If securing member(s) 114 are present at the first end 110e and / or second end 110f they can be used to clamp the pleat securely.

[0160] The user can then proceed to the next pleat by moving or weaving the saree 300 to the second support member 1 10" in the device 100 adjacent (immediately adjacent) to the first one. The same folding and clamping process is repeated to create the second pleat of the desired width, using the clamping members 112a and 112b on the front surface 110a of the second support member". Again, the width of this pleat is determined by the length of the second support member 1 10" between its first end 110e and second end 1 10f, and securing member(s) can be used for added stability.

[0161] This process continues as the user moves on to the next pleat, transferring the saree to the third support member 1 10"' adjacent to the second one. This cycle repeats until all desired pleats are created.

[0162] Finally, the device 100 can be removed once the wearer is satisfied with the appearance of the pleats. Optionally the user may choose to leave one or more support members 1 10 with the clamping members attached to the pleats, detaching the remaining components of the device 100. This keeps the pleats secure through clamping. Additionally multiple pleats can be clamped together using the clamping members of the remaining support member(s) that are still attached to the saree after the pleating process is completed.

[0163] It is to be appreciated that the above is one non-limiting example of the method of using the pleat making device 100. The device 100 may be used with many other suitable methods. Also, the fabric or article of clothing may not necessarily be a saree and instead can be many other suitable fabrics or article of clothing requiring pleating.

[0164] It can be appreciated that due to being adjustable in length with a telescopic arrangement, the support members 1 10 and the connector(s) 102 are easy to use and require no specialised tools for adjustment. Users can quickly and easily manipulate the support member(s) 1 10 to create a desired pleat width and manipulate connector(s) to create a desired spacing between support members 1 10, streamlining the pleat making process and saving valuable time.

[0165] The detachable nature of the pleat making device 100 introduces a level of convenience and portability that is especially relevant for people wearing sarees. The ability to disassemble the device into separate support members with ease means that it can be conveniently carried in a purse or bag. The telescopic arrangement of support members 1 10 and / or connector(s) 102 further facilitates such portability. This portability is particularly advantageous for users attending events or gatherings where they may need to adjust the saree pleats on the go. A skilled person will appreciate when wearing a saree properly using the traditional methods the pleats need to be secured (tucked, retained and / or clamped) between a petticoat and a body of the wearer. When such pleats need to be removed temporarily (e.g., while using restrooms), it can be difficult to secure (tuck, retain and / or clamp) back the pleats without distorting the pleats. If the pleats are distorted for any reason, forming the pleats again and securing (tucking, retaining and / or clamping) the pleats back between the petticoat and the body of the wearer can not only be challenging, but can also be a timeconsuming exercise, especially for inexperienced saree wearers. Often, forming the pleats and securing (tucking, retaining and / or clamping) the pleats will require assistance from another person. If the pin (e.g., safety pin) is accidently dropped or is lost that can add further complexity to putting the saree back on again in a proper manner.

[0166] The detachable nature of this pleat-making device can be useful in such situations. Due to being detachable, the wearer may simply carry a single support member, a compact and portable telescopic component that easily fits into a purse or bag. Upon entering a restroom, the wearer can quickly deploy this support member, utilising the clamping members of that support member to clamp all the pleats together, to reduce the risk of the pleats becoming distorted. Thus, a single support member can be used for preserving structure of the saree pleats without need of without any need of any pins or similar.

[0167] Even when not in the restroom, leaving one support member clamped onto all the pleats can be a practical choice. This can ensure that the pleats remain in their well-arranged condition throughout the time the saree is worn.

[0168] The support members 1 10, the connector(s) and / or the clamping member(s) may be made out of plastic, stainless steel or any other suitable metallic or non-metallic material. Preferably, the support members are made from light weight material so that they are not too heavy, and are easy to carry and use.

[0169] FIG 8 shows a pleat making device 200 according to another preferred example or embodiment of the present invention.

[0170] The device 200 of this example is similar in most aspects to the device 100 described above and the differences can be identified by comparing FIG 8 with FIG 3. In figures relating to device 200, the features that are similar to those shown in figures relating to device 100 are identified with the same reference numerals, incremented by 100. Most of the description of the device 100 of a preferred embodiment or example above including the method of using the device for pleating, equally applies to the device 100 and therefore need not be described again in too much detail. Mostly, only the main differences will be discussed.

[0171] A main distinction is that device 200 is equipped with only two connectors 202. These connectors 202 longitudinally extend and engage with all the support members 210 of device 200, resulting in a significant reduction in the number of connectors. Alternatively, a single-piece connector engaging with all support members 210 at the top portion of these support members may be used instead. The connectors 202 are still adjustable in length, which can be achieved through a telescopic arrangement.

[0172] Additionally, the engagement mechanism at the top portion of the support members 210 differs from that of the support members 110 in device 100. In this example, the engagement mechanism takes the form of hooks 206 designed to receive the body of the connectors 202, allowing for detachable engagement, preferably with a snap-fit arrangement. No separate engagement mechanism is required at the connector(s). In one example, at least one each of the support members 101 of the device 100 may employ similar type of engagement mechanism as that of device 200 or vice-versa.

[0173] Another major difference is the inclusion of an optional frame member 216, which is substantially parallel to the support members 210. This frame member 216 may be firmly attached to one end of each of the two connectors 202 to enhance the stability of the device 200. Similar to the support members 210, this frame member 216 may also be telescopic in design, offering the same maximum extension and retraction length as the support members 210. As shown, there may be at least one clamping member 219 that is located at a substantially middle portion of the frame member 216 between its first end and second end. That clamping member at or near the middle portion allows the frame member to couple or engage with an inner wear of the wearer on a side of the wearer's body if the pleat is to be created at either right or left side of the wearer's body as opposed to the front or rear side of the wearer's body (for example, left or right side of the wearer's hip). Having a third clamping member between the first and second clamping members 112a and 112b in the support members as described above can be advantageous for a similar reason. In one embodiment, there may be an additional second frame member, referred to as 217 and depicted in FIG 9. This second base member could be identical or substantially similar to the first frame member 216, and it may also be firmly attached to one end of each of the two connectors 202. Its purpose is to further enhance the stability of device 200 while remaining substantially parallel to the support members 210 and the first frame member 216.

[0174] Preferably, the two connectors 202 may be fixedly or firmly attached to the frame members 216, 217 to form a rigid frame structure. The rigid frame structure may be rectangular or square in shape.

[0175] In one embodiment, the device 100 may also comprise first and or second frame members that is firmly attached to the ends of connectors that are configured to be located at the two opposite ends of the device in a similar manner as shown in FIGS 9, 10 and 11.

[0176] FIG 15 shows a pleat making device according to another preferred embodiment of the present invention. The device 500 of this example is similar in some aspects to previously described device 100 and device 200 and the differences can be identified by comparing FIG 15 with FIG 3 and FIG 8.

[0177] In one embodiment, the connector may be a rail member 502. There may be one or more support members 510 slidably coupled to the rail member 502, such that each of the one or more support members 510 can be moved along the rail member 502 in a first direction shown by arrow A. This is a longitudinal direction of the rail member.

[0178] In some embodiments the support member 510 has rails, comprising a rail element 522, one or more first adjusting knobs 520, one or more second adjusting knobs 526, and one or more clamping members 525. The clamping members 525 may be slidably coupled to the rail element 522 of the support member 510, such that the clamping member 525 may be moved along the rail element of the support member 522 in a second direction shown by arrows B and B'. Direction B may be substantially orthogonal to direction A. In some embodiments, the rail element 522 may comprise one or more rail portions 523. A clamping member 525 may connect to the support member 510 through a rail portion 523. In some configurations, each support member 510 may comprise two rail portions 523. In some configurations, the rail portions 523 are slots in the rail element 522 of the support member 510. In some embodiments, each support member 510 may have two rail portions, each associated with a second adjusting knob and a clamping member.

[0179] In some embodiments, the one or more clamping members 525 may be assemblies comprising the one or more second adjusting knobs 526, a planar support portion 527 and a clamping portion 528.

[0180] The rail member 502 may comprise two side arms 505 configured to allow the support members 510 to slide along the length of the rail member 502. The rail member 502 may comprise a curved end portion 506 joining the two side arms 505 at the end furthest from the user when in use. In one embodiment, the two side portions may be spaced between 30 mm and 60 mm apart. In one embodiment, the two side portions may be approximately 50 mm apart.

[0181] In some embodiments, a first adjusting knob 520 may allow the support member 510 to be moved along the rail member 502. In some embodiments, turning the first adjusting knob 520 may move the support member 510 along the rail member 502. In other embodiments, the first adjusting knob 520 may be loosened to allow a support member 502 to be moved along the rail member 510, or tightened to fix a support member 502 at a location along the rail member 510. In some embodiments, there may be multiple support members 502, each with an associated first adjusting knob 520, slidably coupled to a rail member 510. In some further embodiments, there are between 5 and 10 such sets of support members 502 with first adjusting knobs 520.

[0182] In some embodiments, a second adjusting knob 526 may allow a clamping member 525 to be moved along the support member 510. In some embodiments, turning the second adjusting knob 526 may move the clamping member 525 along the support member 502. In other embodiments, the second adjusting knob 526 may be loosened to allow a clamping member 525 to be moved along the support member 502, or tightened to fix a clamping member 525 at a location along the support member 502. In some embodiments, there may be multiple clamping members 525, each with an associated second adjusting knob 526, slidably coupled to a support member 502. In some further embodiments, there are two such sets of clamping members 525 with second adjusting knobs 526. On each support member 510, there may be one clamping member 525 located on each side of the rail member 502. In one embodiment, the rail member 502 may be approximately 425 mm in length. The support members may be approximately 210 mm in length.

[0183] In one embodiment, as shown in FIG 17 and FIG 18, the pleat making device 602 may be attached to a belt 601. This may provide the advantage of making the pleat making device 602 easier to use and carry. Additionally, this may provide the advantage of allowing the user to use both their hands for pleating rather than holding the pleat making device. The belt 601 may comprise a mounting plate 610 and a belt strap 611. In one embodiment, the device may further comprise a connecting member 620 and connecting rod 621. The connecting member 620 may be attached to the mounting plate 610 of the belt 601. In some embodiments, the connecting member 620 may be attached to the mounting plate 610 of the belt 601 with one or more fasteners, and the fasteners may be inserted into and mate with one or more threaded holes in the mounting plate 610. In some embodiments, the pleat making device 602 may be easily attachable to and removable from the belt 601.

[0184] Some of the non-limiting examples of the present invention may include one of more of the following:

[0185] • Allowing precise pleat creation by eliminating the inconsistencies and uneven pleats often associated with manual methods.
