Description

[0001] DESCRIPTION

[0002] TITLE : A scroll compressor having a middle shell with a barrel-shaped section

[0003] Field of the invention

[0004] The invention relates to a scroll compressor.

[0005] Background art

[0006] Scroll compressors are very widely used for refrigerant applications. However, the application range is limited, especially because of a high level of noise produced during the operation of a scroll compressor. The acoustic sound level of a scroll compressor is usually between 80 dB(A) and 90 dB(A) and even higher, which is a significant issue for applications in a proximity of human activities.

[0007] Typically, a scroll compressor comprises a compressor casing including a bottom shell delimiting an oil sump, a middle shell provided with a suction volume and housing an electric motor, and an upper shell provided with a compression volume and a discharge volume.

[0008] The main sources of noise in a scroll compressor are the compression of the refrigerant at the compression volume, the mechanical contact between the fixed scroll and the orbiting scroll and the discharge of a compressed refrigerant in the discharge volume. There are also noise sources which are less significant in relation to the sources from the upper shell. As an example, such source of the noise may be the electric motor.

[0009] In recent years, many efforts have been made in order to reduce the overall noise of a scroll compressor.

[0010] One way of providing a noise reduction of a scroll compressor is to provide a noise-reduction cover for the entire scroll compressor. An example of such solutions is disclosed in US2005274569A1 . However, such solutions reduce the noise generated by a scroll compressor in a passive way. In other words, a scroll compressor still generates noise (and therefore e.g. vibrations, which affect the lifetime of a compressor), but the noise experienced by an user is reduced. Moreover, such solutions affect the cooling of a scroll compressor and therefore a scroll compressor is exposed for overheating.

[0011] Other type of technical solution for providing a noise reduction of a scroll compressor relates to including additional muffling devices inside the scroll compressor in the upper shell. As an example of such solution, FR3129693A1 discloses a discharge muffler which is located in the discharge volume and mounted at a discharge passage from the compression volume. However, such solutions may affect the flow of the refrigerant through a scroll compressor and therefore may affect the efficiency of a scroll compressor. It is known in prior art for reciprocating compressors, which are not a part of the present invention, to design an external housing of a hermetic compressor which is capable of reducing noises and vibrations. Exemplary solutions are disclosed in US4384635A and US5281105A. However, these solutions developed for reciprocating compressors cannot be easily introduced into scroll compressors, which e.g. have different internal arrangements of the electric motor and the compression assembly, different type of a motion of the compression assembly, different structure of the compressor casing and different arrangement of the suction volume and the discharge volume. Moreover, solutions known from reciprocating compressors are aimed in reducing the overall noise of an entire reciprocating compressor and not only a selected part of the reciprocating compressor. It should be noted that some parts of a scroll compressor have a limited design freedom due to their function, e.g. the bottom shell with the oil sump. The bottom shell should be also adapted to provide a safe support together with a baseplate of a scroll compressor.

[0012] Therefore, the prior art is silent about solutions for reducing the noise of a scroll compressor coming from a middle shell. Moreover, since a middle shell is usually manufactured by rolling a tube and welding it, a designing freedom is limited.

[0013] It is an object of the present invention to overcome the above-mentioned drawbacks from the prior art solutions and to provide a scroll compressor with an improved noise reduction. Especially, it is an object of the present invention to provide a scroll compressor with an improved middle shell in terms of noise reduction properties for the noise coming from the middle shell of the scroll compressor.

[0014] Summary of the invention

[0015] According to the present invention, there is provided a scroll compressor including:

[0016] - a compressor casing provided with a suction fitting configured to supply the scroll compressor with refrigerant gas to be compressed and a discharge fitting configured to discharge compressed refrigerant gas, wherein the compressor casing includes an upper shell, a middle shell and a bottom shell,

[0017] - a compression unit mounted inside the compressor casing and configured to compress the refrigerant gas supplied by the suction fitting, wherein the compression unit includes a fixed scroll and an orbiting scroll configured to perform an orbiting movement relative to the fixed scroll during operation of the scroll compressor,

[0018] - a drive shaft disposed inside the compressor casing and coupled with the orbiting scroll,

[0019] - an electric motor disposed inside the compressor casing in the middle shell and configured to rotatably drive the drive shaft,

[0020] - an oil sump disposed inside the compressor casing and at least partially delimited by the bottom shell, and

[0021] - a baseplate fixed to the bottom shell, characterized in that the middle shell includes at least one barrel-shaped section extending in an axial direction, the at least one barrel-shaped section having a longitudinal profile which is arcuate and which has a radius of curvature.

[0022] Such a configuration of the middle shell, and particularly the presence of the at least one barrelshaped section, reduces important acoustic parameters like nodal mode number, equivalent radiated power level, far field sound power level, radiated factor and harmonic response. As a result, the noise level generated by the scroll compressor according to the present invention is substantially reduced.

[0023] Moreover, thanks to the at least one barrel-shaped section, the stiffness of the middle shell is improved, which also improves the noise properties of the scroll compressor according to the present invention.

[0024] By reducing the acoustic response of the scroll compressor according to the present invention, overall vibrations of the scroll compressor are also reduced. Thus, a risk of crack formation for all the piping connected to the compressor casing is reduced. Further, a lifetime of the scroll compressor may be increased.

[0025] Advantageously, with the scroll compressor with the middle shell according to the present invention, it is possible to obtain an increase of first modal frequencies compared to a standard cylindrical middle shell up to 70% on first ones and reduce the overall noise by about 3dB depending on the radius of curvature and end diameter, also named head diameter, of the barrelshaped section.

[0035] According to an embodiment of the invention, the middle shell includes a first end cylindrical section having a first cylindrical section diameter and a second end cylindrical section having a second cylindrical section diameter, the at least one barrel-shaped section being axially located between the first and second end cylindrical sections.

[0036] According to an embodiment of the invention, at least one of the first cylindrical section diameter and the second cylindrical section diameter is substantially identical to the first end diameter.

[0037] According to an embodiment of the invention, each of the first cylindrical section diameter and the second cylindrical section diameter is substantially identical to the first end diameter.
