Description

SECURE ACCESS TRAY FOR USED AEROSOL-GENERATING ARTICLE

[0001] The present invention relates to a secure access tray for used aerosol-generating articles.

[0002] An aerosol-generating system for generating an inhalable vapor may comprise an aerosol-generating device and an aerosol-generating article. The aerosol-generating article may have a rod shape for insertion of the aerosol-generating article into a heating chamber of the aerosol-generating device. A heating element may be arranged in or around the heating chamber for heating the aerosol-forming substrate once the aerosol-generating article is inserted into the heating chamber of the aerosol-generating device.

[0003] Used aerosol-generating articles have to be disposed of after use. For this purpose, an accessory tray may be provided that contains a container and a lid. The lid may comprise an opening through which the used articles may be inserted into the tray. Such trays may be readily used for disposal of used articles. However, in conventional trays the lid may be easily removed. In addition, the opening of the lid may be wide. If the tray is inverted, the used sticks may come out from the opening.

[0004] It would be desirable to provide a tray for used aerosol-generating articles, which tray has an improved design that enhances safe handling.

[0005] It would be desirable to provide a tray which may help to reduce the risk of unintentional opening of the tray, and which may help to prevent unintentional release of disposed aerosol-generating articles. It would be desirable to provide a tray with odor reduction functionality.

[0006] According to an embodiment of the invention there is provided a tray for used aerosol-generating articles, the tray comprising a container and a lid defining a receptacle for receiving a used aerosol-generating article. The lid comprises an opening through which the used aerosol-generating article may be inserted into the container. The opening is equipped with a valve made from flexible polymeric material. The valve is configured to be changeable from an open to a closed position.

[0007] The valve of the present invention is configured such that it is normally in the closed position. In other words, without application of any external force, the valve is in the closed position. When the valve is in the closed position, used aerosol-generating article inside the tray cannot come out from the tray. Accordingly, in the closed position the valve needs not to provide a hermetical seal of the opening. It is sufficient if the valve in the closed position assumes a configuration in which the cross-section of the opening is small enough to prevent inadvertent release of used aerosol-generating article from the interior volume of the tray.

[0008] The valve may change to the open position when there is an external force asserted on the valve. This external force may be the force asserted by the user upon introducing a used aerosol-generating article into the tray. Thus, the valve may be moved into the open position by the user pushing a used aerosol-generating article through the valve. With this configuration usability of the tray of the present invention is enhanced. In particular, this configuration allows one-handed use of the tray during disposal of used aerosol-generating articles.

[0009] As discussed above, in a preferred configuration, the valve is changed to the open position by the user inserting into the tray a used aerosol-generating article. Accordingly, the force required to move the valve into the open position needs to be small enough, such that the aerosol-generating article does not break up or rupture during insertion.

[0010] The required force to open the valve may be adjusted by the choice of the material of the valve as well as by the constructional design of the valve.

[0011] The Young’s modulus of the flexible polymeric material of the valve may be below 5 Gigapascal. The Young’s modulus of the flexible polymeric material of the valve may range between 0.001 Gigapascal and 4 Gigapascal. The Young’s modulus of the flexible polymeric material of the valve may range between 0.01 Gigapascal and 3 Gigapascal. The flexible, polymeric material of the valve may be silicone. The temperature of used aerosol-generating article such as an HNB stick that has been used with an electrically heated aerosol-generating device, is typically well below the temperature of a conventional combustible cigarette. Thus, in manufacturing the tray of the present invention a wider range of materials may be utilized, as compared to ash trays used with conventional combustible cigarettes. In particular, in the present invention materials may be used that are less resistive to heat.

[0012] The valve comprises a plurality of slits. The valve comprises between two to nine slits. The valve comprises between three to six slits. The valve may comprise five slits.

[0013] The slits may extend from the center of the valve in a radial direction towards the circumference of the valve. The slits may extend linearly in a radial direction. The slits may extend in an angled direction. The slits may be formed linear with an inclination towards the radius. The slits may extend spirally from the center of the valve.

[0014] The slits may be provided in a symmetrical configuration on the valve. The slits may be provided in a rotational symmetrical configuration with respect to the center of the valve.

[0015] The slits may be arranged such that flexible flaps are formed between adjacent slits. Upon introduction of used aerosol generating articles through the valve, the flaps are bent towards the interior volume of the tray thereby increasing the opening of the valve to allow passage of the articles through the valve. After introduction of aerosol generating article through the valve, the valve returns into the closed position.

[0016] Since the valve in the closed position defines a comparably small opening, also air exchange between the interior of the tray and the ambient environment is reduced. Accordingly, the tray as described herein, helps to maintain any odors within the tray.

[0017] The valve may have a circular or polygonal shape. The shape of the valve may reflect the symmetry of the slits defining the opening of the valve. For example, if the valve comprises five symmetrically arranged slits, the overall shape of the valve may have a corresponding pentagonal shape. The valve may also have a flower like shape, in which each flap defined between adjacent slits forms a petal of the flower-shaped valve.

[0018] The valve may have a diameter of between 10 millimeters and 40 millimeters. The valve may have a diameter of between 18 millimeters and 30 millimeters. The valve may have a diameter of about 22 millimeters.

[0019] The slits may have a length of 2 millimeters to 20 millimeters. The slits may have a length of 7 millimeters to 13 millimeters. The slits may have a length of about 6 millimeters to 11 millimeters. The slits may have a length of about 9 millimeters.

[0020] The slits have a width of 0 millimeters to 2.5 millimeters. The slits have a width of 0.2 millimeters to 2 millimeters. The slits have a width of 0.5 millimeters to 1.5 millimeters. The slits have a width of about 1 millimeter. Where the slits have a width of about 0 millimeters, the slit is a cut.

[0021] All slits may have the same configuration. The arrangement of the slits may be freely chosen depending on design considerations. With a rotational symmetrical arrangement of constructional identical slits, a valve with symmetrical mechanical response during insertion of an aerosol-generating article is obtained.

[0022] The valve may be funnel shaped. The valve may taper down towards the receptacle of the tray. A funnel-shaped valve may guide the introduction of used aerosol-generating articles and may therefore enhance usability of the tray.

[0023] In the normally closed position a funnel-shaped valve may have a taper angle of between 20 and 60 degrees. In the normally closed position a funnel-shaped valve may have a taper angle of between 30 and 50 degrees. In the normally closed position a funnel-shaped valve may have a taper angle of about 40 degrees. In a cross-sectional view of the funnel shaped valve, the “taper angle” is the angle between valve element and a radial direction of the tray.

[0024] In the open position the taper angle of the funnel-shaped valve may increase. In the open position the taper angle of the funnel-shaped valve may increase by up to 15 degrees. For example, a funnel-shaped valve having a taper angle of about 40 degrees in the normally closed position, may assume a taper angle of about 47.5 degrees in the open position.

[0025] In the open position the valve may define an opening with a cross section that corresponds to the cross-section of an aerosol-generating article. In the open position the  valve may define an opening with a cross-section of at least 5 millimeters, preferably of at least 7.5 millimeters, preferably of at least 10 millimeters. In this way the valve is configured such that it allows passage of a conventional aerosol-generating article inserted along its longitudinal axis.

[0026] The valve may be releasably connectable to the lid of the tray. The lid may comprise an opening configured to receive the valve. The valve and the lid may comprise corresponding connection elements to mount the valve in the opening of the lid. The connection elements may be configured to establish a form fit or friction fit connection of the valve in the lid.

[0027] The connection elements may be configured to provide a disengagement prevention functionality. A disengagement prevention functionality may allow to reduce the risk of inadvertent disengagement of the valve from the lid. To this end the connection elements may comprise additional form fitting engagement elements. Such form fitting engagement elements may comprise protrusions, recesses or other constructional elements.

[0028] By configuring the valve as a releasable element, the valve may be replaced after continued use.

[0029] The lid may be made from thermoplastic synthetic resin. The lid may be made from Polyphtalamide (PPA) . PPAs offer improved chemical resistance, high strength and stiffness at elevated temperatures, good creep and fatigue resistance, and high dimensional stability.

[0030] The lid may be releasably connectable to the container via corresponding connection elements. These connections means may include form fit or friction fit connection means. These connection means may also include a screw connection. By disconnecting the lid from the container emptying of the container is facilitated.

[0031] The connection means between the lid and the container may comprise a disengagement prevention mechanism. By configuring the connection means between the lid and the container to comprise a disengagement prevention mechanism, the likelihood of inadvertent opening of the tray may be reduced.

[0032] In an embodiment, the connection means generally are configured in the form of a screw connection. As a part of the disengagement prevention mechanism the lid may comprise two components and a spring mechanism. The two components of the lid comprise an outer lid component and an inner lid component. The inner lid component comprises a screw connection for screwing the lid onto the container. The spring mechanism may be configured to bias the two components in a first configuration. In this first configuration the outer lid component is freely rotatable with respect to the inner lid component. Upon application of a pressure onto the lid and against the spring mechanism, the two components may be engaged with each other such that free rotation of the two lid components is prevented. A rotation of the outer component of the lid directly transfers to the inner lid  component. In this way the lid may be unscrewed from the container. Due to the need of applying a pressure against the biasing force of the spring mechanism the two-part construction of the lid represents an efficient disengagement prevention mechanism, which helps to reduce inadvertent disengagement of the lid from the container. In this way also inadvertent access to the used aerosol-generating articles stored in the tray is largely prevented.

[0033] The container may be made from polymeric material. The container may be made from thermoplastic polymer. The container may be made from polycarbonate. By forming the container from such material, the container is well capable of receiving used aerosol-generating articles. The container may even receive these articles directly after use, when the articles may still be at elevated temperatures.

[0034] The size of the container may be designed to be able to receive an amount of aerosol-generating articles that corresponds to the daily consumption of an average user. The container may also be configured to hold multiples of the average daily consumption. The container may be configured to hold about 20 aerosol-generating articles. For example, the container may be configured to hold up to 140 used aerosol generating articles.

[0035] The connection elements for connecting the lid to the container may comprise acoustic feedback means for reassuring the user of completion of locking of the lid to the container. Such acoustic feedback means may comprise a spring mechanism that engages with protruding mechanical structures to generate an acoustic noise upon full closure of the lid.

[0036] One type of aerosol-generating system is a handheld, portable electrically operated aerosol-forming system for aerosolization and human inhalation of one or more ingredients or substances, powered by a re-chargeable battery. Handheld and portable electrically operated aerosol-forming systems are known that consist of a device portion having a battery, control electronics, and a heater, and a removable aerosol-forming article having an aerosol-forming substrate. The aerosol-forming substate may include a solid material, for example tobacco or a tobacco substitute, and an aerosol-former, so that one or more active ingredients can be aerosolized from the solid substrate. The one or more active ingredients of the aerosol-forming substrate may include nicotine or nicotine substitutes, active agents, botanicals, pharmaceutical ingredients, flavourants, or a combination thereof

[0037] An aerosol-generating device may be configured to heat aerosol-forming substrate to a temperature at which one or more components of the aerosol-forming substrate are volatilised without burning the aerosol-forming substrate. Such devices may also be referred to as Heat-Not-Burn (HNB) devices. The aerosol-forming substrate may be provided as part of an aerosol-generating article. The aerosol-generating article may have a rod shape for insertion of the aerosol-generating article into a cavity, such as a heating chamber, of the aerosol-generating device. A heating element may be arranged in or around the heating chamber for heating the aerosol-forming substrate once the aerosol-generating article is inserted into the heating chamber of the aerosol-generating device.

[0038] The aerosol-forming substrate may be a solid aerosol-forming substrate. The aerosol-forming substrate may comprise both solid and liquid components. The aerosol-forming substrate may comprise a tobacco-containing material containing volatile tobacco flavour compounds which are released from the substrate upon heating. The aerosol-forming substrate may comprise a non-tobacco material. The aerosol-forming substrate may be configured for aerosolization of one or more ingredients, such as for example but not limited to nicotine or nicotine substitutes, active agents, botanicals, pharmaceutical ingredients or flavorants. The aerosol-forming substrate may comprise an aerosol former that facilitates the formation of a dense and stable aerosol. Examples of suitable aerosol formers are glycerine and propylene glycol.

[0039] Below, there is provided a non-exhaustive list of non-limiting examples. Any one or more of the features of these examples may be combined with any one or more features of another example, embodiment, or aspect described herein.

[0081] Fig. 10 shows the engagement of the inner and outer lid component.

[0082] Fig. 1 shows an exploded view of a tray 10 for used aerosol-generating articles. The tray 10 comprises a container 12 and a lid 14, which define a receptacle for receiving used aerosol-generating articles. The lid 14 is made from polyphthalamide and comprises an opening 16. The opening 16 is equipped with a valve 20. The valve 20 is made from silicone and is configured to change from an open to a closed position.

[0083] Used articles may be inserted into the tray 10 through the valve 20 of the lid 14. The valve 20 is normally in the closed position, in which the open cross-section of the valve 20 is small enough to prevent inadvertent release of used aerosol-generating articles from the interior volume of the tray 10.

[0084] Upon insertion of a used aerosol-generating article into the tray 10, the aerosol-generating article contacts the valve 20 and moves the valve 20 into the open position. After insertion of the aerosol-generating article, the valve 20 returns into the normally closed position and continues to prevent inadvertent release of used aerosol-generating articles from the interior volume of the tray 10.

[0085] The valve 20 is releasably mounted to the opening 16 of the lid 14. In the configuration of Fig. 1, the releasable connection is a friction fit connection between the lid 14 and the valve 20. For this purpose, the outer cross-section of the valve 20 corresponds to the dimensions of the opening 16 of the lid 14, such that the valve 20 is retained within the opening 16 due to the friction between valve 20 and lid 14. In addition thereto, the valve 20 and the lid 14 comprise corresponding disengagement prevention connection elements. These disengagement prevention connection elements comprise protrusions 18 provided at the rim of the opening 16 of the lid 14, which interact with recesses 22 provided at the outer circumference of the valve 20. These form fitting disengagement prevention connection elements are used to reduce the risk that the valve 20 is unintentionally released from the opening 16 of the lid 14.

[0086] A specific configuration of a valve 20 is explained in more detail with Figs. 2 to 5. Fig. 2 shows an enlarged view of a flower-shaped valve with 5-fold rotational symmetry.

[0087] As depicted in Fig. 2 the valve 20 comprises 5 symmetrically arranged slits 24 that extend from the center of the valve 20 in a radial direction towards the circumference of the valve 20. The slits 24 are all identically formed. The slits 24 have a length d1 of 11 millimeters and a width d2 of 1 millimeter. The symmetrically formed slits 24 are arranged such that flexible flaps 26 are formed between adjacent slits 24. The flaps 26 do not extend to the very center of the valve. Instead, the flaps 26 define a central open area 28. The cross section of the open area 28 is smaller than the cross-section of conventional elongate aerosol-generating articles. In Fig. 2 the circular cross-section of the open area 28 has a width that is smaller than 5 millimeters.

[0088] As depicted in Fig. 3, upon introduction of a used aerosol-generating article 30 through the valve 20, the flexible flaps 26 are bent towards the interior volume of the tray 10 thereby allowing passage of the article 30 through the valve 20.

[0089] After introduction of aerosol-generating article 30 through the valve 20, the flaps 26 of the valve 20 return into the normally closed position.

[0090] As can be particularly seen in the side views of Figs. 4 and 5 the valve 20 is funnel-shaped and tapers down towards the interior of the tray 10. The funnel shape of the valve 20 serves as guide during insertion of a used aerosol-generating article 30. Upon insertion of an article 30, as depicted in Fig. 5, the article to be inserted bends the flaps further down. This results in an increased taper angle β2 of the valve 20 of about 47.5 degrees in the open position of the valve 20.

[0091] Fig. 6 shows the connection portion for connecting the lid 14 to the container 12. The connection means as depicted in Fig. 6 generally form a bayonet type connection. The lid 14  comprising protruding connection elements 32 is inserted into the open end of the container 12. The container 12 comprises slots 34 into which the protruding connection elements 32 of the lid 14 can be inserted by a rotational closure movement.

[0092] In order to disengage the lid 14 from the container 12, an opposite rotational movement of the lid 14 with respect to the container 12 is required. The lid 14 may have to be regularly removed such that the tray 10 can be emptied.

[0093] In order to reduce the risk of inadvertent disengagement of the lid 14, the lid 14 may comprise a disengagement prevention connection mechanism. Such mechanism and the operation principle thereof are depicted in Figs. 7 to 10.

[0094] The lid 14 generally comprises two components and a spring mechanism. The lid 14 comprises an inner lid component 36 that comprises the protruding connection elements 32 forming part of the bayonet connection means. This inner lid component 36 is depicted in Fig. 7. At an upper side 38 of the inner lid component 36 there are provided a number of notches 40.

[0095] In Fig. 8 a bottom view of an outer lid component 42 is depicted. The outer lid component 42 comprises the portion of the lid 14, to which the valve 20 is mounted. At the bottom side 44 of the outer lid component 42 there are provided a number of lugs 46. The outer lid component 42 is to be placed on top of the inner lid component 36 such that the lugs 46 are located adjacent to the notches 40.

[0096] Fig. 9 shows a cross-sectional view of the assembled lid 14, in which the inner lid component 36 and the outer lid component 42 are assembled together. Between the inner lid component 36 and the outer lid component 42 a plurality of spring elements 50 are provided. These spring elements 50 form a spring mechanism that maintains the two lid components 36, 42 in a first position. In this position the two lid components 36, 42 are kept at a distance such that the notches 40 and the lugs 46 of the two lid components 36, 42 do not engage with each other. In this configuration the outer lid component 42 is freely moveable with respect to the inner lid component 36. This means that a rotation of the outer lid component 42 does not lead to a rotation of the inner lid component 36. In this configuration the lid 14 cannot be released from the container 12.

[0097] As depicted in Fig. 10, and in order to release the lid 14 from the container 12, the lid 14 has to be pressed against the biasing force of the spring mechanism. By pressing the outer lid component 42 towards the inner lid component 36, the biasing spring force is compensated and the lugs 46 of the outer lid component 42 may engage with the notches 40 of the inner lid component 36. In this configuration the outer and the inner lid component 36, 42 are coupled with each other. By rotating the outer lid component 42, the rotational movement can be translated to the inner lid component 36 to release the bayonet type mount between the lid 14 and the container 12.
