AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing rectangular paper bags with closable filling openings often fail to maintain a permanent closure during transport and storage, and they lack a way to visually confirm that the contents have not been accessed by unauthorized persons.

Method used

A rectangular paper bag with bow handles fixed by glued inserts, where the glued inserts are made of a paper-based laminate with a weldable plastic layer, allowing for a durable closure of the filling opening through electric heat sealing, which leaves visible traces when opened.

Benefits of technology

The solution provides a durable closure that withstands repeated opening and closing during transport and storage, while ensuring that unauthorized access to the contents leaves visible traces.

Description

[0001] Rectangular paper bag with a closable filling opening

[0002] The subject matter of the utility model is a rectangular paper bag with a closable filling opening which serves as a container for various types of commercial goods and ensures permanent closure during transport, storage and sale.

[0003] When the goods are in transit to the final customer in single-use paper bag packaging, with numerous rough movements of the full bags, there is a risk of damage to the bags and loss of the permanent closure of the filling opening. Moreover, visual confirmation that the goods were not affected by unauthorised persons, which is important information for the recipient, is not possible. One of the very many known solutions of rectangular paper bags with a closable filling opening is presented in the Polish utility model description no. PL73067Y1. This bag, designed to carry purchased goods over short distances, has two string bow handles, the lower ends of which are attached by adhesive joints through paper strips of glued inserts to the inner surfaces of the opposite, wider side walls of the bag. The glued inserts are located along and below the upper edges of the filling opening. The bag described in PL73067Y1 is distinguished by the fact that a double-sided adhesive tape is glued on one of the glued inserts, covered from the inside of the bag with a protective tape. After filling the bag and removing the protective tape, by clamping the edge zones of the filling opening on both sides, the opening is sealed linearly at the adhesive joint between the double-sided adhesive tape and the glued insert of the opposite side of the bag. This joint is not permanent under repeated bending during refilling operations and can lead to the bag opening becoming unsealed. The solution with double-sided adhesive tape makes it possible to open and close the bag repeatedly without leaving visible traces of the fact - visible traces are disadvantageous, especially in light of unauthorised persons accessing the contents. It is therefore advisable to develop a paper bag solution with a durable closure for the filling opening which can withstand the strain of repeated opening during transport and storage, whilst also protecting the packaged goods from unauthorised opening without visible traces of such intervention.

[0004] The solution presented in this utility model has many features in common with the one described above in PL73067Y1 : bow handles fixed with their lower ends by strips of glued inserts along and below the upper edges of the filling opening to the inner surfaces of the opposite, wider side walls of the bag and glued inserts equipped on their inner surfaces with a technical means that connects and closes the opening when the outer side walls of the bag are pressed together on both sides. The bag in this utility model is distinguished by the fact that the glued inserts are made of a paper-based laminate with a weldable plastic layer on one side facing the weldable layer of the glued inserts on the opposite wall of the bag.

[0005] The utility model thus defined can be made with two forms of bow handles: ones made of paper string or ones comprising paper strips folded flat at two comers.

[0006] Once the bag has been filled with the goods by the manufacturer or retailer, they close the filling opening by welding on layers of glued inserts. The resulting linear weld, in addition to the durability of the closure, increases the fastening strength of the bow handles. Closing the bag with the weld is a onetime operation, whilst opening the bag requires tearing the weld - which leaves clearly visible traces of the intervention.

[0007] A simplified view of the bag in the utility model is shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2. In Fig. 1 the bag is shown unfolded and before being filled with goods; in Fig. 2 it has been filled and the opening sealed by electric heat sealing. Fig. 3 shows the cross-section according to lines A-A of Fig. 2 enlarged, whilst Fig. 4 shows the bag in the second form, with bow handles made of flat folded paper strips.

[0008] The folding, rectangular-shaped paper carrying bag in the present utility model has a filling opening that closes when filled with goods. The bag shown in Figs 1 and 2 has bow handles (1), made of paper strings (1a), fixed at their lower ends by strips of glued inserts (2) bonded with a joint (2a) along and below the upper edges of the filling opening to the inner surfaces of the opposite, wider side walls (b) of the bag. The glued inserts (2) are made of a paper-based laminate (2b) with a weldable layer (2c) of plastic on one side, facing the weldable layer (2c) of the glued insert (2) on the opposite side wall (b) of the bag. Once the bag has been filled, the heat sealing with external pressure (F) on both sides and at the temperature (t) of the linear electrodes of the heat sealing machine results in the formation of a weld (z) between the adjacent coatings of the weldable layers (2c) of the glued inserts (2).

[0009] Fig. 4 shows a perspective view of the bag in the second form of the utility model, with flat bow handles (1) made by folding the paper strips (1b) in the two comers. The closing of the filling opening with a weld (z) is characterised by the same solution as in Fig. 3, which presents the bag with paper string handles (1a).
