Description

DIPOLE ANTENNAFIELD

[0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to the field of communication antenna, and more particularly, to a dipole antenna.BACKGROUND

[0002] With the development of 5th Generation Mobile Communication Technology (5G) , multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technology is widely used in Sub-6GHz base station products, in which an antenna unit (AU) is mounted on a radio unit (RU) through connectors or in other manners, such as soldering.

[0003] An antenna element for 5G communication can be a dipole antenna made of metal material or formed from a metal patch on dielectric material. The antenna element also can be a printed circuit board (PCB) dipole antenna with a printed circuit and several parts soldered together.

[0004] With the development of frequency division duplexing (FDD) advanced antenna system (AAS) , conventional dipole antenna elements have some limitations for lower frequency such as size limitation, especially for a multiband combined FDD project. The antenna element typically needs to guarantee a wide bandwidth, and integrate several communication frequency bands together. A traditional metal dipole antenna element fabricated by diecasting has good and stable performance in production, but it has higher weight and cost when integrating with the radio unit. The conventional patch antenna element on dielectric material is low in weight and cost, but its bandwidth is limited. The PCB dipole antenna could balance the performance and weight of the antenna element, but the antenna element has multiple parts, and all parts need to be assembled together, such that the production process of the PCB dipole antenna is complex, and it is hard to control the production quality.SUMMARY

[0044] Principles of the present disclosure will now be described with reference to several example embodiments shown in the drawings. Though example embodiments of the present disclosure are illustrated in the drawings, it is to be understood that the embodiments are described only to facilitate those skilled in the art in better understanding and thereby achieving the present disclosure, rather than to limit the scope of the disclosure in any manner.

[0045] The term “comprises” or “includes” and its variants are to be read as open terms that mean “includes, but is not limited to. ” The term “or” is to be read as “and / or” unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. The term “based on” is to be read as “based at least in part on. ” The term “being operable to” is to mean a function, an action, a motion or a state can be achieved by an operation induced by a user or an external mechanism. The term “one embodiment” and “an embodiment” are to be read as “at least one embodiment. ” The term “another embodiment” is to be read as “at least one other embodiment. ” The terms “first, ” “second, ” and the like may refer to different or same objects. Other definitions, explicit and implicit, may be included below. A definition of a term is consistent throughout the description unless the context clearly indicates otherwise.

[0046] A lower frequency band antenna usually uses diecasting antenna elements to get good and stable performance in production. The diecasting antenna elements have higher weight and cost. A sheet metal antenna element is suitable for the higher frequency band due to its good weight performance, but the structure is not strong for the lower frequency band. The shape of the thin metal structure is easy to change in production, thus both the performance and reliability of the sheet metal antenna element are not good. This kind of antenna element usually is hard to get wide bandwidth and needs a complex support and other structures to improve the bandwidth. The patch dielectric antenna has low weight and cost, but the performance is limited. The PCB dipole antenna could balance the performance and weight of the antenna element, but the antenna element has multiple parts, and all parts need to be assembled together, such that the production of the PCB dipole antenna is complex, and it is hard to control the production quality.

[0047] Embodiments of the present disclosure aim to provide a new kind of dipole antenna, so as to decrease the size, weight and cost of the dipole antenna, reduce the undesired coupling between adjacent dipole antenna elements in an antenna array, and simplify the production process. Hereafter, principles of the present disclosure will be described in detail with reference to FIGS. 1A-9C.

[0054] In some embodiments, as shown in FIGS. 1A-1B, the first top branch 3111 may be arranged near to one of two adjacent edges of the horizontal dielectric part 211, and the second top branch 3112 may be arranged near to the other one of the two adjacent edges of the horizontal dielectric part 211. For ease of illustration, the one of two adjacent edges near to the first top branch 3111 may also be referred to as a first edge, and the other one of the two adjacent edges near to the second top branch 3112 may also be referred to as a second edge. It is to be understood that the first and second edges are named for the same radiation arm 31, and the first and second edges of different radiation arms 31 may be the same edge of the horizontal dielectric part 211. As shown, a portion of the first top branch 3111 may extend along the first edge of the horizontal dielectric part 211, and the other portion of the first top branch 3111 may be bent towards the connection part 3110. The second top branch 3112 may extend along the second edge of the horizontal dielectric part 211.

[0055] In some embodiments, as shown in FIGS. 1A-1B, the second through hole 2102 is spaced apart from the first edge of the horizontal dielectric part 211, and the first top branch 3111 includes a first base portion 3181 extending along the first edge of the horizontal dielectric part 211 and a first extension portion 3191 connecting to the first base portion 3181 and extending away from the first edge of the horizontal dielectric part 211 to the second through hole 2102. As shown in FIGS. 1A-1D, the first extension portion 3191 extends away from the first edge of the horizontal dielectric part 211, and a portion of the first side branch 3121 may be spaced apart from an edge of the respective vertical dielectric part 212 in a horizontal extension of the respective vertical dielectric part 212, such that the coupling between the dipole antenna 100 and other adjacent antennas in an antenna array is decreased.

[0056] In some embodiments, as shown in FIGS. 1A-1B, the first extension portion 3191 includes two straight segments connected to the first base portion 3181 in series. In other embodiments, the first extension portion 3191 may include one or more straight segments, and / or one or more bending segments, which will be described hereafter with reference to FIGS. 8A-8F.

[0057] In some embodiments, as shown in FIGS. 1A-1B, the third through hole 2103 may be arranged near to the second edge of the horizontal dielectric part 211, and the second top branch 3112 may extend along the second edge of the horizontal dielectric part 211.

[0058] In some embodiments, as shown in FIGS. 1A-1D, the third through hole 2103 may be spaced apart from the second through hole 2102 along a horizontal extension direction of the respective vertical dielectric part 212, and the fourth through hole 2104 may be aligned with the third through hole 2103 along a vertical extension direction of the respective vertical dielectric part 212.

[0059] In some embodiments, as shown in FIGS. 1C-1D, the second side branch 3122 may be straight along the vertical extension direction of the respective vertical dielectric part 212. In other embodiments, the second side branch 3122 may include one or more bent portion.

[0060] In some embodiments, as shown in FIGS. 1C-1D, the first side branch 3121 may be L-shaped. In other embodiment, the first side branch 3121 may be of other shape.

[0061] In some embodiments, as shown in FIGS. 1A-1B, a notch 3130 is provided between the top radiation parts 311 of adjacent radiation arms 31, a width of the notch 3130 is larger than a distance between the top radiation parts 311 of adjacent radiation arms 31, and the width also could be adjusted to other size base on desired performance. With such an arrangement, the bandwidth of the dipole antenna 100 can be adjusted.

[0062] In some embodiments, as shown in FIGS. 1A-1D, the dipole antenna 100 further includes a pair of balun feed parts 32 arranged on the plurality of vertical dielectric parts 212 and intersected with each other. One of the pair of balun feed parts 32 is arranged below the top radiation parts 311 of the first and third radiation arms 31, and the other one of the pair of balun feed parts 32 is arranged below the top radiation parts 311 of the second and fourth radiation arms 31. The balun feed parts 32 may be electromagnetically coupled to the respective radiation arms 31. For each of the vertical dielectric parts 212, one surface thereof is provided with the respective balun feed part 32, and the other surface thereof is provided with the respective ground member 33.

[0063] Hereafter, a traditional dielectric antenna element will be described with reference to FIGS. 2A-2D for comparison with the dipole antenna 100 according to embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown, the traditional dielectric antenna element adds vertical branches to reduce size of the antenna. The traditional dielectric antenna element includes a supported board 201, an element main body 202, a mental printed top radiator 203, vertical branches 204, a balun circuit 205, and a ground part 206. The elements of the traditional dielectric antenna element are usually separated into several parts and produced separately. The several parts can be soldered together. The supported board 201 and the element main body 202 also may be produced one time and then mental parts can be added onto the supported board 201 and the element main body 202. The element main body 202 may contain different side branches connected by through holes. The vertical branches at the same position of opposite faces of the element main body 202 usually have the same length.

[0064] Comparing the dipole antenna 100 of the present disclosure with the traditional dielectric antenna element, the dipole antenna 100 of the present disclosure can further reduce the element size because different side branches are arranged at opposite surfaces of the vertical dielectric parts 212.

[0065] FIG. 3A is a perspective view of a dipole antenna array according to an embodiment of the present disclosure, FIG. 3B is a top view of the dipole antenna array as shown in FIG. 3A. As shown in FIGS. 3A and 3B, the dipole antenna array includes nine dipole antennas 100 arranged in 3X3 on a support dielectric board 41. An isolation wall 42 is provided between adjacent rows of dipole antennas 100. The isolation wall 42 may be a mental sheet or dielectric material with mental plating. The distance between two adjacent rows of dipole antennas 100 is dx in the horizontal direction and the distance between two adjacent dipole antennas 100 is dy in the vertical direction. To get a smaller antenna, dx is always reduced less than 0.5λ,λ denotes a radiation wavelength. With such a distance, the undesired coupling between the dipole antennas 100 may be big and may influence the radiation performance.

[0066] FIGS. 4A and 4B illustrate coupling between adjacent dipole antennas according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. In FIGS. 4A and 4B, the same current direction is represented by solid arrows and opposite current direction is represented by dotted arrows. As shown in FIG. 4A, to further reduce the unwanted coupling between the dipole antennas 100 in a case that dx is small, the dipole antennas 100 are arranged such that the first top branches 3111 are next to each other in the horizonal direction. The coupling portions L1 of the first top branches 3111 in the adjacent dipole antennas 100 has the same current direction. Other parts in the horizonal direction have opposite current direction. The current direction in the first side branch 3121 is shown in FIG. 4B. As shown in FIG. 4B, the vertical portions L2 of the first side branches 3121 in the adjacent dipole antennas 100 have the same current direction, but have greater distance compared with other vertical parts at the side face of elements. The bottom portions L3 of the first side branches 3121 in the adjacent dipole antennas 100 have opposite current directions. Therefore, according to embodiments of the present disclosure, the coupling between the adjacent dipole antennas 100 can be further reduced.

[0067] FIGS. 5A and 5B illustrate coupling between traditional dielectric antenna elements. As shown in FIGS. 5A and 5B, the portions L1 of the metal printed top radiators 203 in the adjacent antenna elements have the same current direction and the portions L2 of the vertical branches 204 in the adjacent antenna elements have the same current direction. Since both portions L1 and L2 have the same current direction, there will be more undesired coupling between adjacent antenna elements.

[0068] Comparing the dipole antenna 100 of the present disclosure with the traditional dielectric antenna element, the dipole antenna 100 has more paths with opposite current directions. Therefore, the coupling of adjacent elements could be reduced with such decoupled structure.

[0069] FIG. 6 is a graph illustrating a return loss of the dipole antenna as shown in FIG. 1A. As shown in FIG. 6, S11 represents the return loss of the +45° polarization, and S22 represents the return loss of the -45° polarization. The mid frequency is 2.35GHz, and both the return loss S11 and S22 of the dipole antenna 100 are below -12dB.

[0070] FIG. 7A illustrates an example arrangement of four dipole antennas for checking coupling between adjacent dipole antennas, FIG. 7B is a graph illustrating the coupling of different polarization, FIG. 7C is a graph illustrating the coupling of the same polarization.

[0071] As shown in FIG. 7A, four dipole antennas 100 are arranged in the horizonal direction and a feed port is provided on the middle dipole antenna 100 to check the coupling of adjacent dipole antennas 100. The coupling of different polarization is shown in FIG. 7B and the coupling of the same polarization is shown in FIG. 7C. The dipole antennas 100 and traditional dielectric antenna have the same dx, dy and the isolation wall 42 has the same height (18mm) . The coupling performance of the dipole antenna 100 is represented by a solid line, and the coupling performance of the traditional dielectric antenna element is represented by a dotted line. Apparently, the coupling between the adjacent dipole antennas 100 is lower than the coupling between the traditional dielectric antenna elements. Therefore, the dipole antennas 100 has better coupling performance compared with the traditional dielectric antenna.

[0072] FIGS. 8A-8F are structural schematic views of top radiation parts according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The structure of the top radiation parts 311 as shown in FIGS. 8A-8F is like that as shown in FIG. 1B. In the following, only the differences between them will be described in detail, and the same parts will not be repeated.
