AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing electrical terminations for ceramics suffer from poor adhesion and reliability due to inadequate bonding between the ceramic and metal layers, leading to delamination and failure under thermal and mechanical stress.

Method used

The development of a novel embedded electrical termination structure that integrates a metal layer with a ceramic substrate using a bonding layer to enhance adhesion and reliability, incorporating a conductive adhesive and a metal layer with a roughened surface to improve mechanical interlocking.

Benefits of technology

Enhances the adhesion and reliability of electrical connections by preventing delamination and improving mechanical stability, thereby extending the lifespan and performance of ceramic-based electronic components.

Abstract

In one form, an electrical termination assembly includes a first ceramic member, a second ceramic member secured to the first ceramic member, and at least one electrical component embedded between the first ceramic member and the second ceramic member. An electrical termination extends through a bore and into a recess of the first and second ceramic members and is in electrical contact with the electrical component. The electrical termination includes a rod disposed within the bore and a flange disposed within the recess. At least one interface member is disposed between the flange and the recess. The electrical termination and the interface member each define different materials having tailored coefficients of thermal expansion such that when the rod is in tension the first ceramic member and the second ceramic member are in compression.
