Abstract

Methods and systems related to the light-driven capture and, in some instances, release of target species are provided. In some embodiments, the method comprises irradiating (e.g., with visible light) a liquid solution comprising dissolved target species molecules (e.g., CO2) and an excited-state photoacid (e.g., an organic excited-state photoacid such as pyranine), such that a proton activity of at least a portion of the solution (e.g., proximal to a liquid-gas interface and / or a liquid-solid interface) is increased, wherein the increase in the proton activity induces, at least in part, one or more reactions resulting in at least some of the dissolved target species molecules changing to a gaseous state.
