Description

COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS FOR TREATING WATER SCALETECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present invention relates to the field of alkaline cleaning agents, particularly descaling agents. More specifically, the present invention relates to a composition, a use solution, a method, and use thereof for treating water scale in the civilian field.

[0002] TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

[0003] Water scale is undesirable in both industrial and civilian fields. In industry, the presence of water scale on industrial pipelines will have negative effects, such as reducing the thermal conductivity efficiency of the pipeline, and in severe cases, causing equipment failure, thereby posing safety hazards. In the civilian field, excessive intake of minerals in water scale may bring about adverse impact on human health. Moreover, for example, water scale on cooking utensils (such as electric kettles) not only affects the heating speed of water, but also service life of the cooking utensils. Therefore, regular removal of water scale is essential.

[0004] In the field of cleaning, especially in the civilian field, acidic descaling agents are often used to remove water scale. Acidic descaling agents can effectively remove various components such as carbonates (e.g., calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate) from water scale. However, traditional descaling agents are often ineffective when water scale comprises or mainly consists of silicate components (such as metasilicates) . For example, when traditional descaling agents are used to clean water scale containing silicate components in electric kettles of hotels, it takes a lot of time to clean the kettles, but the cleaning effect is often unsatisfactory. When heavy water scale accumulates, it is necessary to replace the electric kettle with a new one. For hotels, this not only increases labor costs, but also requires additional expenses.

[0005] In civilian applications, the presence of silicate components in water scale is a problem that is often overlooked. So far, no descaling agent has been specifically designed to target silicate-based scale.

[0006] Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new composition and method for treating water scale, especially those derived from mineral-rich water, to address the problems in the prior art. Ideally, the composition and method can not only effectively remove silicate scale, but also feature user-friendly operation and environmental safety.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0040] In some embodiments, the water scale includes or is a silicate scale (e.g., a metasilicate scale) .

[0041] In some embodiments, the method further includes step (c) : removing the heated use solution and rinsing the surface.

[0042] In some embodiments, step (b) includes heating the use solution for 1.5-20 min, e.g., 1.5-2 min, 2-15 min, 3-12 min, 4-10 min, 5-8 min, 6-7 min, or any sub-range or value therebetween, generally depending on factors such as the heating power, temperature, volume of the use solution and the like; or heating the use solution to boiling.

[0043] In some embodiments, a molar ratio of the carboxylic acid / carboxylate chelating agent to the alkali source in the use solution is 0.4: 1-12: 1, e.g., 0.42: 1-12: 1, 0.5: 1-11: 1, 0.8: 1-10.5: 1, 1: 1-10: 1, 1.2: 1-11.5: 1, 1.5: 1-10: 1, 1.8: 1-9: 1, 2: 1-5: 1, 2: 1-7: 1, 2: 1-8: 1, 3: 1-7.5: 1, 3.5: 1-7: 1, 4: 1-6: 1, 4.5: 1-6.5: 1, or any sub-range or value therebetween.

[0044] In some embodiments, a weight ratio of the carboxylic acid / carboxylate chelating agent to the alkali source in the use solution is 4: 1-60: 1, e.g., 5: 1-55: 1, 10: 1-50: 1, 15: 1-55: 1, 15: 1-30: 1, 20: 1-45: 1, 20: 1-40: 1, 25: 1-35: 1, or any sub-range or value therebetween.

[0045] In some embodiments, said heating mentioned when describing the method of the present invention includes heating with electrical energy and / or gas energy. In some embodiments, said heating is performed to remove the water scale on the surface by a heating equipment used in the food service industry, such as an induction cooker, a microwave oven, a gas stove, a steam oven, an electric kettle, a water heater, an electric hot pot and the like. In some embodiments, said heating is performed by an electric kettle.

[0046] In some embodiments, where an electric kettle is used, it generally takes 1.5-20 min (1.5-2 min, 2-15 min, 3-12 min, 4-10 min, 5-8 min, 6-7 min, or any sub-range or value therebetween) to heat the use solution to boiling. This usually depends on factors such as the power of the electric kettle and the volume of water to be heated. For example, it takes about 1.5-2 min to heat about 300 ml of the use solution to boiling using an electric kettle.

[0047] In some embodiments, step (a) includes diluting the composition described in the first aspect of the invention by, for example, 10-90 times, such as 10-50, 10-40, 15-80, 20-60, 20-50, 25-75, 30-70, 30-55, 35-65, 40-60 times, or any value or sub-range therebetween, to obtain a use solution.

[0048] In some embodiments, step (b) further includes maintaining the use solution in a boiling state for a period of 3-20 min (e.g., 4-15 min, 5-10 min, 5-8 min, 6-12 min, or any value or sub-range therebetween) by heating, after heating the use solution to boiling.

[0049] The inventors of the present application have found that when GLDA is used, water scale can be removed more efficiently by maintaining the use solution in a boiling state for a period of time after reaching boiling. Therefore, in some embodiments where GLDA is used, step (b) further includes maintaining the use solution in a boiling state for a period of 3-20 min (e.g., 4-15 min, 5-10 min, 5-8 min, 6-12 min, or any value or sub-range therebetween) by heating, after heating the use solution to boiling.

[0050] A fourth aspect of the present invention provides use of the composition or the use solution of the present invention in treating water scale. In some embodiments, water scale includes or is silicate scale. In some embodiments, the use includes contacting the use solution of the present invention with a surface having water scale.

[0051] In embodiments of the above aspects, the surface having water scale includes, but is not limited to, a metal (e.g., hard metal, such as stainless steel) surface, a glass surface, a plastic surface, a ceramic surface, or any combination thereof. In some embodiments, the surface includes a tableware surface, a container surface, a cookware surface, a kettle (e.g., an electric kettle) surface and the like. In some embodiments, the surface includes an inner surface, such as an inner surface of a container (e.g., a hot pot, an electric kettle) . In some embodiments, the surface is an inner surface of a stainless-steel container that contacts with water while heating. In some embodiments, the surface is an inner surface of an electric kettle.

[0052] In embodiments of the above aspects, the water scale mentioned in the present invention includes or is silicate scale (such as metasilicate scale) .

[0053] In embodiments of the above aspects, the water scale mentioned in the present invention is formed from mineral-rich water. In some embodiments, the mineral-rich water includes mineral water, natural spring water, well water, hot spring water, deep groundwater, or other water rich in mineral elements.

[0054] In embodiments of the above aspects, the composition  / use solution  / method of the present invention is applicable for treating water scale, including tap water scale, carbonate scale, and silicate scale. In some embodiments, the composition  / use solution / method of the present invention is particularly suitable for treating silicate scale, such as water scale formed from water with a metasilicic acid content > 25 mg / L, such as silicate scale formed from mineral water.

[0055] The composition, use solution and method of the present invention can effectively remove water scale (especially silicate scale) from a surface in a relatively short period of time without causing damage to the surface. The composition and use solution of the invention are characterized by simple formulations, safety, non-toxicity, and low cost. It is simple to treat water scale using the composition, use solution and method of the present invention. The whole process is safe and non-irritating, without the need for wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) . The composition, use solution and method of the present invention can not only effectively remove water scale, but are also time-and cost-effective, making them highly applicable in the civilian sector, including the food service industry.

[0056] Other aspects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art from reading the following description.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0057] The above objectives and features as well as other objectives and features of the present invention will become apparent from the following description of the present invention in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:

[0063] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE EMBODIMENTS

[0064] The scope of the present invention is not limited to any specific embodiments described herein. The following examples are provided for illustration only.

[0065] It is commonly recognized that the main components of water scale are calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate, which are white block-like or powdery substances. They are formed by the precipitation of dissolved substances such as calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate in water on the surface of a container (such as a water heater, a kettle, a pot, etc. ) upon heating. Such water scale can usually be effectively removed using an acidic descaling agent.

[0066] However, the inventors of the present application have discovered that conventional acidic descaling agents perform poor in removing water scale formed from mineral-rich water sources (such as mineral water, natural spring water, well water, etc. ) . For example, electric kettles commonly used in hotels to heat mineral water develop scale that is difficult to remove by acidic descaling agents. By analyzing the water quality, the inventors identified that the primary mineral in such water is silicate, the content of which is much higher than that of other components such as calcium and magnesium. Therefore, the main component of water scale formed is silicate. Table 1 shows an example of an analysis report for mineral water.

[0067] Table 1: Water analysis report

[0068] *It is worth noting that although Table 1 reports the silicon content in the mineral as SiO2, it actually reflects the amount of silicates.

[0069] Therefore, the inventors have developed a novel composition, use solution and method specifically designed for treating water scale, especially silicate scale. The composition, use solution and method of the present invention are particularly suitable for civilian use, including the food service industry such as hotels, restaurants, dining halls, and household applications.

[0070] In industry, water scale is usually treated under a high alkali condition (e.g., pH > 12, such as with an alkali content greater than 10 wt%) . This is usually done in a closed system, requiring precise temperature control (e.g., < 40℃) . This process requires at least 2 hours or even overnight treatment. However, in other industries such as the service industry, for example in hotel rooms, precise temperature control during the cleaning process is challenging, and a cleaning time of up to 2 hours is usually unacceptable. In addition, health and safety issues during the cleaning process, such as the corrosiveness issue caused by high alkali content, need to be considered in these industries.

[0071] The present invention has developed a composition, use solution and method that can effectively remove water scale, especially silicate scale, using a chelating agent as a main component under a low alkali condition (pH 10-12) in a shorter period of time. Moreover, the technology of the present invention does not require precise temperature control, and it is simple, convenient, fast and safe to operate. In particular, using the technology of the present invention, silicate scale can be effectively removed during boiling of the use solution, even within a time period as short as 2 min.

[0072] In some environments such as hotels, electric kettles are often used to heat mineral water, and tend to accumulate stubborn silicate scale that is difficult to remove on their inner surfaces. The composition, use solution and method of the present invention are effective in removing such silicate scale. Such silicate scale includes scale formed from mineral-rich water (such as mineral water, natural spring water, well water, hot spring water, deep groundwater, or other water rich in mineral elements) . In some specific embodiments, the method for removing silicate scale includes:

[0073] (a1) to an electric kettle, adding an alkali source (e.g., an alkali metal hydroxide, such as NaOH) , a carboxylic acid / carboxylate chelating agent (e.g., EDTA, MGDA, GLDA, or any combination thereof) , and water, to form a use solution containing 0.05-2 wt%of the alkali source and 0.25-8 wt%of the carboxylic acid / carboxylate chelating agent; and

[0074] (b1) turning on the switch of the electric kettle to heat the use solution (e.g., heat to boiling) .

[0075] In some embodiments, a concentration of the alkali source in the use solution is 0.1-1.8 wt%, 0.2-1.7 wt%, 0.3-1.6 wt%, 0.4-1.5 wt%, 0.5-1.4 wt%, 0.6-1.2 wt%, 0.7-1 wt%, 0.7.5-0.9 wt%, or any sub-range or value therebetween. In some embodiments, a concentration of the carboxylic acid / carboxylate chelating agent in the use solution is 0.3-7.5 wt%, 0.4-7 wt%, 0.5-6.5 wt%, 1-7 wt%, 1.25-6 wt%, 1.5-4.5 wt%, 2-6.5 wt%, 3-5.5 wt%, 4-5 wt%, or any sub-range or value therebetween.

[0076] In some embodiments, a pH of the use solution, a weight ratio of the chelating agent to the alkali source in the use solution, and / or a molar ratio of the chelating agent to the alkali source in the use solution are as defined in the above aspects of the invention.

[0077] In some embodiments, the alkali source is NaOH, and the chelating agent is at least one of EDTA, MGDA, and GLDA.

[0078] In some embodiments, the method further includes step (c1) : removing the heated use solution and rinsing the electric kettle.

[0079] In some embodiments, said heating in step (b1) includes heating the use solution for 1.5-20 min or heating the use solution to boiling.

[0080] In some embodiments, step (b) further includes maintaining the use solution in a boiling state for a period of 3-20 min (e.g., 4-15 min, 5-10 min, 5-8 min, 6-12 min, or any value or sub-range therebetween) by heating, after heating the use solution to boiling, for example, in the case where GLDA is used.

[0081] In some embodiments, the composition or use solution of the present invention may comprise a surfactant as an additive, especially a nonionic low-foaming surfactant.

[0082] Definitions

[0083] The following definitions are provided to assist in understanding of the present invention and are not intended to limit the scope of the present invention.

[0084] In the present invention, the term "optionally / optional" means that the features (e.g., components, steps, etc. ) defined by the term may or may not exist. When this term is used in the claims and description, in the case where it indicates the “absence” of a defined feature, it should be interpreted as the claims do not define the feature, rather than that the claims exclude the presence of the feature. For example, when the claims define “optionally, the method further includes step (c) ” , it involves two situations. The first situation indicates that the claims define “the method further includes step (c)” , and the other situation indicates that the claims do not specifically define “the method further includes step (c) ” , but do not exclude the existence of this feature unless otherwise indicated in the context.

[0085] In the present invention, "silicate scale" means that the main component of water scale is silicate (e.g., in the content of more than 20 wt%) , such as metasilicate, but does not exclude other common components in water scale such as carbonate components. For example, the content of silicate in silicate scale is more than 20 wt %, wherein the silicate is mainly metasilicate.

[0086] In the present invention, the composition of the first aspect of the present invention may also be referred to as a "concentrate" .

[0087] In the present invention, when referring to "contacting / contact a surface with a use solution" or similar expressions, "contacting / contact" also includes the case of "immersing / immerse" , that is, immersing / immerse the surface in the use solution, and so on. In some embodiments, "contacting / contact" also includes adding a use solution to a container containing the surface (e.g., a kettle, such as an electric kettle) .

[0088] In the present invention, "treating / treat water scale" or similar expressions may be used interchangeably with "clearing / clear / removing / remove water scale" , unless otherwise specified.

[0089] In the present invention, when referring to "descaling / descale, " it generally means "removing / remove water scale" , unless otherwise specified.

[0090] In the present invention, "%" generally refers to a weight percentage, unless otherwise specified.

[0091] In the present invention, when referring to “EDTA, MGDA, GLDA, DTPA, HEDTA, EGTA, or sodium salts thereof” or similar expressions, “sodium salts thereof” means any one or more or all of the sodium salts of EDTA, MGDA, GLDA, DTPA, HEDTA and EGTA, unless otherwise specified.

[0092] As demonstrated in the following examples, the inventors have found that the composition, use solution and method of the present invention can effectively remove water scale, especially silicate scale, from a surface in a relatively short period of time without causing damage to the surface. Meanwhile, the composition, use solution and method of the present invention are safe, environmentally friendly, and time-and cost-effective, thus having great application potential in the civilian sector, including the food service industry.Examples

[0093] The following examples further illustrate the technical solution of the present invention, but do not limit the protection scope of the present invention.

[0096] 2. Water scale used in the examples of the present application

[0097] In the following examples, water scale formed on the inner walls of electric kettles in hotels by heating mineral water was used, which comprised mainly silicate.

[0098] Example 1: Descaling performance of the composition of the present invention

[0099] The formulations in this example were prepared according to the formulations shown in Table 3 below, wherein examples 1-2 represent the formulations of existing acidic descaling agents in the art, and example 3 represents the composition according to the present invention.

[0100] Table 3: Specific formulation and descaling performance of each example

[0101] *Lime-A-Way (Limengwei) is an existing acid descaling agent available from Ecolab

[0102] Testing Methods:

[0103] 1. Adding the indicated amount of the formulation of the descaling composition (example 2 or example 3) shown in Table 3 to an electric kettle with silicate scale on its inner surface, followed by adding 300 ml of water to form a use solution;

[0104] 2. Turning on the electric kettle to heat the use solution to boiling (which took about 1.5-2 min) ; and

[0105] 3. Removing the use solution and rinsing the electric kettle with water; and then examining the scale, taking photos, and recording the results.

[0106] For example 1, 10 g of citric acid were added to an electric kettle with silicate scale on its inner surface, followed by adding 300 ml of water and heating to boiling (heating for about 1.5-2 min) . Subsequent to rinsing the electric kettle, the scale was examined. The results were photographically documented and recorded.

[0107] The results were shown in Table 3 and FIG. 1. For silicate scale, the composition of the present invention had significantly better descaling efficiency than the conventional descaling agent in the prior art.

[0108] Example 2: Descaling performances of different chelating agents

[0109] The descaling effects of the same amount of three different chelating agents, tetrasodium EDTA, trisodium MGDA, and tetrasodium GLDA, were tested using the three formulations in Table 4 (examples 4-6) .

[0110] Table 4: Descaling performances of different chelating agents

[0111] 0: No difference from pre-cleaning state; 1: residual scale > 50%; 2: small amount of residual scale (between 10-40%) ; 3: slight residual scale (< 10%) ; 4: completely cleaned.

[0112] Testing Methods:

[0113] 1. Adding 10 g of each formulation of the descaling composition in Table 4 to an electric kettle with silicate scale on its inner surface, followed by adding 300 ml of water to form a use solution;

[0114] 2. Turning on the electric kettle to heat the use solution to boiling (which took about 1.5-2 min) ; and

[0115] 3. Removing the use solution and rinsing the electric kettle with water; and then examining the scale, taking photos, and recording the results.

[0116] The results were shown in Table 4 and FIG. 2. Both EDTA and MGDA exhibited excellent performances against silicate scale. Combined with the results from the above Example 1, trisodium MGDA still had excellent descaling performance even at a lower usage concentration.

[0117] The pH values of the above use solutions in examples 4-6 (the solutions formed after adding 300 ml of water) were 10.68, 11.54, and 10.71, respectively.

[0118] Example 3: Descaling performances of different amounts of the chelating agent

[0119] The descaling effects of the same chelating agent (tetrasodium EDTA, trisodium MGDA, or tetrasodium GLDA, respectively) at different concentrations were tested using the formulations in Tables 5-7 (examples 7-12) .

[0120] Table 5: Descaling performances at different concentrations of chelating agent -trisodium MGDA

[0121] Table 6: Descaling performances at different concentrations of chelating agent -tetrasodium EDTA

[0122] Table 7: Descaling performances at different concentrations of chelating agent -tetrasodium GLDA

[0123] In Tables 5-7: 0: no difference from pre-cleaning state; 1: residual scale > 50%; 2: small amount of residual scale (between 10-40%) ; 3: slight residual scale (< 10%) ; 4: completely cleaned.

[0124] Testing Methods:

[0125] 1. Adding 15 g of each formulation of the descaling composition in Tables 5-7 to an electric kettle with silicate scale on its inner surface, followed by adding 300 ml of water to form a use solution;

[0126] 2. Turning on the electric kettle to heat the use solution to boiling; and

[0127] 3. Removing the use solution and rinsing the electric kettle with water; and then examining the scale, taking photos, and recording the results.

[0128] The results were shown in Tables 5-7 and FIG. s3-5. For silicate scale, when the chelating agent was present in the composition at an amount of 25-40 wt%, it could effectively remove scale at an appropriate dilution. For GLDA, the descaling effect would be better if the water continues to boil for a period of time, such as 5 min, after reaching boiling point.
