Abstract
Description
[0001] TITLE OF INVENTION
[0002] GEAR SHIFT PEDAL ASSEMBLY FOR A TRANSMISSION UNIT OF A VEHICLE
[0003] FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0004]
[0001] Present invention relates to a transmission unit for a vehicle. More particularly, the present invention relates to a gear shift pedal assembly for a transmission unit of the vehicle.
[0005] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0006]
[0002] Vehicles are typically provided with a prime mover, such as an Internal Combustion (IC) engine or an electric motor or a combination of IC engine and the electric motor, having an output shaft that is coupled to a transmission unit. The transmission unit is provided with a gear train assembly, wherein the gear train assembly is coupled to a gear shifter and with one or more wheels of the vehicle. The gear train assembly features a variety of gear ratios that can be selectively engaged by a user of the vehicle during operation, through the gear shifter.
[0007]
[0003] In vehicles such as motorcycles, the gear shifter is generally located by a footrest. The gear shifter has a shift lever located below or adjacent to the footrest and is connected to the gear train assembly. A foot peg is also provided to the shift lever. The foot peg enables the user to engage with the shift lever. The user engages his foot with the foot peg and pushes the gear shifter upwards or downwards for selecting the required gear ratio.
[0008]
[0004] In conventional gear shifters, the foot peg is fixed to the shift lever. In such a construction, when the vehicle falls towards the gear shifter side, the foot peg contacts ground surface and get deformed due to weight of the vehicle. Such a deformation can make the foot peg inoperable through the user’s foot, which is undesirable. The deformation can also damage the gear shifter, making the repairing process expensive, laborious and cumbersome.
[0009]
[0005] In addition, during various driving conditions such as an off-road driving or racing, the user places his foot rearwardly on the footrest, for standing on the footrest. Thus, a gap is created between front portion of the user’s foot and the foot peg. Such a gap causes an inconvenience to the user for operating the shift lever through the foot peg. Moreover, foot length varies based on anthropology of the user. As such, user with a smaller foot length may face difficultly in engaging the foot peg and for operating the shifter lever. Such a scenario may make the user to change the riding position for reaching the foot peg, thereby compromising a safe and comfortable riding position, which is undesirable.
[0010]
[0006] Thus, there is a need in the art for a gear shift pedal assembly for a transmission unit of a vehicle, which addresses at least the aforementioned problems.

[0030] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0031]
[0020] The present invention relates to a gear shift pedal assembly for a transmission unit of a vehicle. The gear shift pedal assembly of the present invention allows change in position of a foot peg along length of a shift lever to adjust distance between a foot peg and a footrest of the vehicle. Consequently, stress on a foot of a user of the vehicle is reduced while riding the vehicle in various terrain conditions, such as off-road conditions. Additionally, force required to operate a shift lever of the gear shift pedal assembly is reduced, thereby enhancing convenience and riding comfort to the user. Further, the gear shift pedal assembly of the present invention enables adjustment of position of the foot peg relative to the footrest according to foot size of the user. Thus, the gear shift pedal assembly of the present invention is modular for accommodating foot size of the user.
[0032]
[0021] In the present disclosure, arrow indications provided in Figures pertain to directional indications of the vehicle. As such, the terms “top side”, “bottom side”, “left side” and “right side” respectively correspond to top, bottom, left and right sides of the vehicle, until and unless specified otherwise.
[0033]
[0022] Figure 1 is a left- side perspective view of a gear shift pedal assembly 100, in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention. The gear shift pedal assembly 100 is provided for a transmission unit (not shown) of a vehicle, which can be a one-wheeled vehicle, two-wheeled vehicle or any multiwheeled vehicle as per requirement. In the present embodiment, the vehicle is a motorcycle.
[0034]
[0023] The gear shift pedal assembly 100 comprises a shift lever 102 coupled to the transmission unit. The shift lever 102 may be an elongated arm that is oriented about a front-rear direction of the vehicle. The shift lever 102 engages with a shifter arm (not shown) that is also connected to a gear train of the transmission unit. As such, actuation of the shift lever 102 correspondingly actuates the shifter arm, thereby selecting a gear ratio in the gear train. In the context of the present disclosure, the term ‘shift lever’ is a foot operated lever. Accordingly, the shift lever 102 is located by a footrest of the vehicle and is connected or coupled to the transmission unit.
[0035]
[0024] In an embodiment, the shift lever 102 may be a front single overhangingarm (or a toe shifter) or a double overhanging-arm (or a toe-heel shifter) about the footrest, in a side view of the vehicle. The shift lever 102 of front single overhanging-arm type is provided such that a substantial length of the shift lever 102 is disposed in front of the footrest in a front-rear direction of the vehicle. The shift lever 102 of double overhanding-arm type, may be provided such that, a portion of the shift lever 102 extends in front of the footrest and another portion of the shift lever 102 extends behind the footrest.
[0036]
[0025] Referring to Figure 2 in conjunction with Figure 1, a right-side perspective view of the gear shift pedal assembly 100 is depicted. The shift lever 102 is further provided with a coupling portion 138 having a pivotal axis A- A’. The coupling portion 138 is adapted to pivotally engage with the shifter arm about the pivotal axis A-A’ . As such, the shift lever 102 is operable about the pivotal axis A-A’, for selecting the required gear ratio in the transmission unit. In an embodiment, the pivotal axis A-A’ is oriented about a left-right direction of the vehicle. Thus, the shift lever 102 is pivotally movable in a top-down direction about the pivotal axis A-A’ for selecting the required gear ratio.
[0037]
[0026] In an embodiment, the coupling portion 138 is a slot portion provided on the shift lever 102. The slot portion is capable of engaging with a shaft (not shown) or a pin (not shown) extending from the shifter arm or the transmission unit. The slot portion can engage with the shaft or the pin through engagement techniques known in the art.
[0038]
[0027] In an embodiment, the coupling portion 138 can be a shaft portion extending from the shift lever 102. The shaft portion may engage with an opening (not shown) provided in the shifter arm or the transmission unit. The shaft portion can engage with the opening through engagement techniques known in the art.
[0039]
[0028] In an embodiment, position or location of the coupling portion 138 on the shift lever 102, is selected based on the type of shift lever 102. If the shift lever 102 is of the front single overhanging-arm type (or the toe shifter type), the coupling portion 138 is provided at a rear portion 102b of the shift lever 102, in the frontrear direction of the vehicle. Thus, the rear portion 102b is coupled to the transmission unit when the shift lever 102 is of the front single overhanding -arm type.
[0040]
[0029] In an embodiment, the coupling portion 138 is provided at a central portion (not shown) of the shift lever 102, when the shift lever 102 is of the double overhanging-arm type (or the toe-heel shifter type). Thus, the central portion is coupled to the transmission unit, when the shift lever 102 is of the double overhanding-arm type.
[0041]
[0030] Referring to Figure 3 in conjunction with Figures 1 and 2, an exploded view of the gear shift pedal assembly 100 is depicted. As depicted, the gear shift pedal assembly 100 comprises a foot peg 104 removably or detachably coupled to the shift lever 102. In the context of the present disclosure, the term “foot peg” corresponds to a shift peg for the shift lever 102. The foot peg 104 is oriented in a left-right direction of the vehicle (i.e. laterally to the shift lever 102) and acts as an engaging surface for receiving an external force to pivotally operate the shift lever 102 about the pivotal axis A-A’ .
[0042]
[0031] In an embodiment, the foot peg 104 is provided at a front portion 102 a of the shift lever 102, for the shift lever 102 of front overhanging-arm type (i.e. the toe shifter type). The foot peg 104 can be provided both at the front portion 102a and a rear portion 102b of the shift lever 102, for the shift lever 102 of the double overhanging-arm type (i.e. the toe-heel shifter type).
[0043]
[0032] The shift lever 102 comprises an elongated slot 106 adapted to receive and engage with the foot peg 104. The elongated slot 106 is provided corresponding to the location of the foot peg 104 to be mounted. In the present embodiment, the elongated slot 106 is provided at the front portion 102a of the shift lever 102. The elongated slot 106 allows positional adjustment of the foot peg 104 along the shift lever 102 in a lengthwise direction i.e. along the front-rear direction of the vehicle. Such a construction enables the user to detach and re-position the foot peg 104 suitably on the shift lever 102, as per user’s foot length requirement. Consequently, user’s convenience for operating the shift lever 102 is improved. In an embodiment, dimension and the location of the elongated slot 106 is selected based on various factors such as foot length adjustment requirements, external force required to change the gear ratio of the transmission unit. Thus, the dimension and the location of the elongated slot 106 is selected to maintain proper engagement between the rider foot and the foot peg of different riders and to maintain the external force required to change the gear ratio within desired limit to improve comfort of the rider.
[0044]
[0033] In an embodiment, the foot peg 104 comprises a stem portion 116. The stem portion 116 is an elongated member that acts as a structural member of the foot peg 104 and receives the external force from the user for operating the shift lever 102. A cushion member 140 is provided on the stem portion 116. The cushion member 140 enhances comfort for the user while engaging with the foot peg 106 for operating the shift lever 102. Further, one or more arms 118a, 118b extend from the stem portion 116 and inwardly towards the vehicle. The one or more arms 118a, 118b are oriented along the left-right direction of the vehicle and are adapted to engage with the elongated slot 106 of the shift lever 102.
[0045]
[0034] In an embodiment, the one or more arms 118a, 118b comprises a top arm 118a and a bottom arm 118b. The top arm 118a extends from a top surface (not shown) of the stem portion 116, while the bottom arm 118b extends from a bottom surface (not shown) of the stem portionl l6. In an embodiment, the top wall 118a and the bottom wall 118b can extend from any side surfaces (not shown) of the stem portion 116 as per mounting requirements in the gear shift pedal assembly 100. The top arm 118a and the bottom arm 118b extend parallelly to one another inwardly to the vehicle and along the left-right direction of the vehicle to form a prong or fork structure. An opening 120 is provided on each of the top wall 118a and the bottom wall 118b. The foot peg 104 is coupled to the shift lever through a fastener 124 and the one or more arms 118a, 118b.
[0046]
[0035] In an embodiment, the one or more arms 118a, 118b of the foot peg 104 are adapted to engage with the elongated slot 106 through an adapter 108. The adapter 108 is an intermediate member that enables fastening between the shift lever 102 and the foot peg 104. The adapter 108 comprises a shank portion 112 and one or more coupling members 110a, 110b that extend outwardly from the shank portion 112. The shank portion 112 and the one or more coupling members 110a, 110b are aligned about the left-right direction of the vehicle. The shank portion 112 is an elongated shaft adapted to be inserted into the elongated slot 106. The shank portion 112 is provided with a threaded end (not shown) that engages with a threaded fastener 114 upon insertion into the elongated slot 106. In an embodiment, the shank portion 112 is provided with an engagement portion 136. The engagement portion 136 is adapted to contact inner peripheral surface (not shown) of the elongated slot 106. In an embodiment, the engagement portion 136 is provided with a flat top engagement surface 136a and a flat bottom engagement surface (not shown) for contacting the inner peripheral surface of the elongated slot 106 thereby increasing surface to surface contact between the adapter 108 and the shift lever 102. Such a contact between the adapter 108 and the shift lever 102 enhances contact area therebetween, enhancing life and structural integrity of the gear shift pedal assembly 100.
[0047]
[0036] The one or more coupling members 110a, 110b are adapted to engage with the one or more arms 108a, 108b of the foot peg 104. In an embodiment, the one or more coupling members 110a, 110b comprises a top coupling member 110a and a bottom coupling member 110b. The top coupling member 110a extends from a top portion (not shown) of the shank portion 112, while the bottom coupling member 110b extends from a bottom portion (not shown) of the shank portion 112. In an embodiment, the top coupling member 110a and the bottom coupling member 110b can extend from any side surfaces (not shown) of the shank portion 112 as per mounting requirements in the gear shift pedal assembly 100. The top coupling member 110a and the bottom coupling member 110b extend parallelly to one another outwardly to the vehicle and along the left-right direction of the vehicle to also form a prong or a fork structure. An aperture 122 is provided on each of the top coupling member 110a and the bottom coupling member 110b. The aperture 122 is capable of receiving the fastener 124. The aperture 122 aligns with the opening 120 of the one or more arms 110a, 110b. Upon alignment between the opening 120 and the aperture 122, the fastener 124 is inserted, thereby removably joining or coupling the foot peg 104 to the shift lever 102.
[0048]
[0037] Referring to Figure 4 in conjunction with Figures 1-3, an enlarged view of portion ‘B’ of Figure 1 is depicted. As depicted, the each of the one or more arms 110a, 110b comprises one or more bevelled surfaces 126a, 126b. The one or more bevelled surfaces 126a, 126b are provided on a front edge 128 or a rear edge 130 of each of the one or more arms 118a, 118b. The one or more bevelled surfaces 126a, 126b allow rotation of the foot peg 104 with respect to the adapter 108 to a folded position (not shown) from an unfolded position (UFP). Such a construction ensures that, the foot peg 106 collapses to the folded position, in the event of a fall of the vehicle on the gear shift pedal assembly 100, thereby minimising or mitigating damage caused due to fall of the vehicle. Consequently, the load transfer and damage to components from the transmission unit connecting the gear shift pedal assembly 100 are also minimised or mitigated. In the context of the present invention, the term “unfolded position” corresponds to a position of the foot peg 104 that is oriented laterally, i.e. substantially perpendicular to the shift lever 102. Also, the term “folded position” corresponds to a collapsed position of the foot peg 104, wherein the foot peg 104 is oriented parallelly to the shift lever 102.
[0049]
[0038] In the present embodiment, the one or more bevelled surfaces 126a, 126b are provided to the rear edge 130 of each of the one or more arms 118a, 118b. The one or more bevelled surfaces 126a, 126b comprises a top bevelled surface 126a and a bottom bevelled surface 126b. The top bevelled surface 126a is provided to the rear edge 130 of the top arm 118a, while the bottom bevelled surface 126b is provided to the rear edge 130 of the bottom arm 118b. Accordingly, the foot peg 104 rotates about the rear edge 130 during movement to the folded position from the unfolded position. In an embodiment, the one or more bevelled surfaces 126a, 126b may be provided to the front edge 128 of each of the one or more arms 118a, 118b. Accordingly, the foot peg 104 rotates about the front edge 128 during movement to the folded position from the unfolded position.
[0050]
[0039] In an embodiment, the one or more bevelled surface 126a, 126b may be a chamfered surface or a filleted surface that allows rotation of the foot peg 104 to the folded position from the unfolded position ‘UFP’. In an embodiment, the chamber or fillet radius of the one or more bevelled surface 126a, 126b may be considered as per requirement of ease of movement of the foot peg 104 to the folded position from the unfolded position ‘UFP’.
[0051]
[0040] Further, each of the one or more arms 118a, 118b comprises one or more flat surfaces 132a, 132b provided on an edge opposite to that of the one or more bevelled surface 126a, 126b. In other words, the one or more flat surfaces 132a, 132b are provided on the front edge 128 of the one or more arms 118a, 118b if the one or more bevelled surfaces 126a, 126b are provided on the rear edge 130. The one or more flat surfaces 132a, 132b are adapted to engage with the shift lever 102 when the foot peg 104 is in the unfolded position ‘UFP’, and thereby preventing further rotation of the foot peg 104 towards the shift lever in the front direction of the vehicle. In other words, the one or more flat surfaces 132a, 132b act as a stopper for controlling the position of the foot peg 104 in the unfolded position ‘UFP’.
[0052]
[0041] Referring to Figure 5 in conjunction with Figures 1-4, a sectional view of the portion B of the gear shift pedal assembly 100 is depicted. As depicted, the gear shift pedal assembly 100 further comprises a resilient member 134 provided between the foot peg 104 and the adapter 108. The resilient member 134 is provided for biasing the foot peg 104 away from the shift lever towards the unfolded position ‘UFP’ of the foot peg 104 during normal vehicle operation. The resilient member 134 allows rotation of the foot peg 104 to the folded position from the unfolded position ‘UFP’ only when an external force is applied against the biasing force of the resilient member 134. In an embodiment, the resilient member 134 allows rotation of the foot peg 104 from the unfolded position ‘UFP’ to the folded position when the vehicle falls on a ground surface and on the gear shift pedal assembly 100. In an embodiment, the resilient member 134 may be a coil spring or a compression spring or a tension spring.
[0053]
[0042] In the present embodiment, the resilient member 134 being the coil spring is positioned between the foot peg 104 and the adapter 108. The resilient member 134 has a first end 134a mounted to the foot peg 104, a second end 134b (shown in Figure 4) mounted to the adapter 108 and a coil portion 134c surrounding the fastener 124.
[0054]
[0043] In an embodiment, during assembly, the foot peg 104 is firstly connected to the adapter 108 by connecting the one or more arms 118a, 118b with the one or more coupling members 110a, 110b. The opening 120 of the one or more arms 118a, 118b is aligned with the aperture 122 of the one or more coupling members 110a, 110b. Upon alignment, the resilient member 134 is also connected to the foot peg 104 and the adapter 108. At this juncture, the fastener 124 is inserted through the opening 120, the aperture 122 and the coil portion 134c of the resilient member 134. The foot peg 104 is pivotally coupled to the adapter 108, the pivot coupling between foot peg 104 and the adapter 108 allows relative rotation movement therebetween. Subsequently, the shank portion 112 of the adapter 108 is inserted into the elongated slot 106. Upon insertion, the threaded end of the shank portion 112 is tightened with the threaded fastener 114 against the shift lever 102, thereby locking the foot peg 104 onto the shift lever 102.
[0055]
[0044] In an embodiment, for adjusting position of the foot peg 104 with respect to the footrest, the threaded fastener 114 is loosened. Subsequently, the shank portion 112 is slid along the elongated slot 106. After locating the appropriate position on the elongated slot 106, the threaded fastener 114 is fastened, thereby adjusting position and distance between the foot peg 104 and the footrest.
[0056]
[0045] In an embodiment, the foot peg 104 comprises a wall 118c (shown in Figure 6). The wall 118c is adapted to abut the shift lever 102 in an unfolded position UFP of the foot peg 104. Thus, the wall 118c acts as a stopper for the foot peg 104 and prevents further rotation of the foot peg 104, when the foot peg 104 is in the unfolded position ‘UFP’. In an embodiment, the wall 118c connects sides 118d, 118e (as shown in Figure 6) of the one or more arms 118a, 118b and is oriented laterally to the one or more arms 118a, 118b. The wall 118c also provides ingress protection to the adapter 108 positioned between the one or more arms 118a, 118b. In an embodiment, the edges 118d, 118e can be front edge or rear edges of the one or more arms 118a, 118b. Thus, the wall 118c can be a front wall or a rear wall based on the construction and type of the foot peg 104.
[0057]
[0046] The claimed invention as disclosed above is not routine, conventional, or well understood in the art, as the claimed aspects enable the following solutions to the existing problems in conventional technologies. Specifically, the claimed aspect of removably coupling the foot peg with the shift lever makes the gear shift pedal assembly modular and is capable of adjusting distance between the footrest and the foot peg. Further, the elongated slot positional adjustment of the foot peg with respect to the footrest, thereby accommodating basis foot length of the user. Moreover, such an adjustment enables the user to comfortably operate the shift lever for selecting the required gear ratio in the transmission unit. Additionally, the aspect of providing one or more bevelled surfaces enables rotation of the foot peg to the folded position from the unfolded position in the event of fall of the vehicle on the gear shift pedal assembly. Such a construction minimises or mitigates damage to the gear shift pedal assembly and / or to the transmission unit. Additionally, the one or more flat surfaces provided on the opposing side of the one or more bevelled surfaces prevents further rotation of the foot peg in the unfolded position. Furthermore, the resilient member ensures that the foot peg is maintained in the unfolded position in normal operating condition of the vehicle. The foot peg is operated to the folded position only when the external force acting on the foot peg is greater than the resilient force of the resilient member. Such a construction mitigates unintended rotation of the foot peg to the folded position.
[0058]
[0047] In light of the abovementioned advantages and the technical advancements provided by the disclosed assembly, the claimed aspects as discussed above are not routine, conventional, or well understood in the art, as the claimed aspects provide solutions to the existing problems in conventional technologies. Further, the claimed aspects clearly bring an improvement in the functioning of the assembly itself as the claimed aspects provide a technical solution to a technical problem.
