Abstract
Description
A cassette for an electrical energy storage deviceCROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONThis application is based on and derives the benefit of Indian Provisional Application IN202441065023, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] Embodiments disclosed herein relate to a cassette for an electrical energy storage device, and more particularly to a cassette to accommodate at least one electrical energy storage device for use in electric vehicles.BACKGROUND
[0002] The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has been steadily increasing worldwide, primarily driven by environmental concerns and advancements in technology. However, conventional EVs face limitations such as lower range, higher charging times, and significant initial investment. To address these challenges, the industry is increasingly turning to electrical energy storage device interchange technology, particularly for heavy electric vehicles.
[0003] In heavy electric vehicles (HEVs), fixed electrical energy storage devices are commonly used, necessitating charging at dedicated charging stations. However, this approach presents limitations, including range anxiety, long charging times, and high initial costs. Electrical energy storage device interchange technology offers a promising solution by enabling quick electrical energy storage device replacement at the charging and interchange stations, eliminating the need for long charging sessions.
[0004] While the electrical energy storage device interchange system is straightforward for smaller vehicles, the heavy vehicle segment presents unique challenges. Designing a single high-capacity electrical energy storage device for heavy vehicles is impractical due to concerns such as potential electrical energy storage device damage, high replacement costs, and lack of scalability. Thus, there is a pressing need for a modular and scalable system capable of accommodating multiple electrical energy storage devices within a single device for electrical energy storage device interchange in heavy electric vehicles.
[0005] Hence, there is a need in the art for solutions that will overcome the above- mentioned drawback(s), among others.OBJECTS

[0017] Embodiments herein relate to a cassette for at least one electrical energy storage device. The cassette includes a frame constructed using multiple support structures, and is enclosed by panels on all sides (i.e., front, rear, top, bottom, left, and right sides of the cassette). The front panel is fitted with an arrestor, while the rear panel carries an electrical connector and a fluid connector.
[0018] The bottom panel of the cassette is equipped with support members running along its length and support rigs across its width. Wings are affixed to either side of the support members. Load rollers are attached beneath the support members, and guide rollers are positioned on their outer sides.
[0019] Internally, the cassette includes a cavity formed by the inner surfaces of the frame, designed to house several electrical energy storage devices along with internal components. The front panel also carries a Telematics Control Unit (TCU) and a Manual Service Disconnect (MSD) for communication and safety purposes, respectively.
[0020] The support structures forming the frame are metallic bars fastened together, optionally reinforced by ribs placed between them to strengthen the frame. The internal components can include a Battery Management System (BMS), an Integrated Circuit Unit (ICU), a junction box, and elements related to battery conditioning, cooling, and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems.
[0021] The external panels serve as protective shields, guarding internal components and storage devices from dust, debris, moisture, and other contaminants. The arrestor on the front panel is designed to secure the cassette in a dock during vehicle movement or while stationed at an electrical energy storage device charging and an interchange station. This arrestor may be a spring-operated, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electromechanical, electromagnetic, or electro-permanent magnetic lock.
[0022] The TCU is configured to receive data from the BMS and relay it to a local or remote operator. It can also send the data to a cloud interface for storage and analysis, and / or to a visual display on the interchange and charging station for operator access. The MSD serves to disconnect power from the storage devices to the cassette’s electrical components when engaged.
[0023] The rear panel includes openings for the electrical and fluid connectors, which align with complementary connectors on a docking station in the electrical energy storage device charging and an interchange station. The support members are designed to bear the load of the energy storage devices. The support rigs reinforce the bottom panel against this load, and the support members may be hollow metal tubes or bars shaped as required.
[0024] The load rollers help support the cassette and enable rolling along a dock's load rail during insertion and removal. The guide rollers assist alignment by rolling along the side rails of the dock. I-bolts are provided on the front and rear faces of the support members to enable lifting using stackers during maintenance.
[0025] The bottom panel further includes clampdown receivers (wherein there are two clampdown receivers at the front and two clampdown receivers at the rear), strategically located on the front and rear sides of the support rigs. These receivers are designed to interface with clampdowns on the dock and include openings to accommodate dock-side protrusions for secure locking.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF FIGURES

The load rollers 153 are configured to roll on the load rails provided within the dock during the insertion and removal of cassette 100 from the dock. The guide rollers 154 are provided on the outer surface of the support members 152 and are configured to assist the insertion and removal of cassette 100 from the dock by rolling on side rails provided on the dock. The guide rollers 154 ensure that the cassette maintains its proper alignment during movement, preventing any potential damage or misalignment during the insertion or removal process.
[0055] In an embodiment herein, the load rollers 153 may incorporate shock-absorbing features to minimise vibrations during transport.
[0056] In an embodiment herein, the guide rollers 154 may be made of durable, low- friction materials to ensure smooth operation and longevity.
[0057] In an embodiment herein, an I-Bolt 128 is provided on the front and rear faces of the support members 152. The I-bolt 128 can be hooked by the stackers for lifting during maintenance and service operations. The I-bolt 128 is depicted merely as an example of a lifting support; however, it may be obvious to a person of ordinary skill in the art that any other alternatives such as, but not limited to, a load rich, an anchor ring, lifting bolt, and so on.
[0058] A pair of front clampdown receivers 156 and a pair of rear clampdown receivers157 are provided on the operational front and operational rear of the plurality of support rigs158 of the bottom panel 150, respectively. The pair of front clampdown receivers 156 and the pair of rear clampdown receivers 157 are designed to engage with corresponding clampdowns on the dock, securing the cassette 100 in place during operation and charging. In an embodiment herein, the front clampdown receiver 156 and the rear clampdown receivers are provided with openings to accommodate the protrusion in the front clampdowns and rear clampdowns provided on the dock. During insertion of the cassette 100 into the dock, the front and the rear clampdown provided on the dock engage the front and the rear clampdown receivers, respectively and prevent movement of the cassette 100 within the dock. In an embodiment herein, the plurality of clampdown receivers can be used based on the requirement. In an embodiment herein, the clampdown receivers may incorporate sensors (not shown) to provide feedback on the engagement status, enhancing the overall safety and reliability of the cassette, the dock, and the station.
[0059] In operation, the cassette 100 can be easily interchanged, allowing for quick replacement of depleted electrical energy storage devices with fully charged ones. The arrestor 122 secures the cassette 100 in place, while the TCU 124 facilitates communication between the cassette 100 and the station's systems. The electrical energy storage devices within the cavity 110 can be charged or discharged as needed, with the internal components managing the process to ensure optimal performance and longevity of the storage devices.
[0060] Embodiments herein facilitate efficient energy management in electric vehicles, reducing downtime and extending operational range. The robust construction and protectivefeatures of the cassette 100 ensure the safety and longevity of the electrical energy storage devices, even in challenging environmental conditions.
