[0066] This disclosure relates to powered seating options for watercraft. The seats described herein are installed in watercraft and are automatically adjustable with respect to location / position, height, incline, recline, headrest position, footrest position, arm rest location and position and combinations thereof. Various connections are operably connected to dedicated motors which allow for independent adjustment at various locations to provide a personalized, powered seat for a user. The powered seating options include seats for coupling to assemblies for adjusting and positioning the seat as well as self-contained and / or integrated seats configured for direct installation on a pedestal, deck or other watercraft surface.

[0067] An assembly for providing a moveable and adjustable seat for a boat or other watercraft is described herein. The assembly may be provided as an aftermarket accessory for the purpose of retrofitting a boat seat to provide power movement and adjustment to a boat seat. It is also contemplated and within the scope of this disclosure that the assembly may be provided with a seat for manufacture of new watercraft. That is, the assembly may also be provided with a seat wherein the seat frame is configured to nest at least a portion of the assembly within a seat base. The assembly and / or seat and assembly can be mounted on a boat in a number of manners. For example, the assembly can be mounted to a seat post of a boat. The pre-existing seat can be removed and the assembly installed on the seat post. Additionally, or alternatively, the assembly can be installed directly to a hull of the boat and / or to a fixture of the boat. Any flat surface on the boat may provide a mounting surface for the motorized seat and / or seat assembly.

[0068] The assembly for powering a seat has a housing and a platform connected thereto, to allow a user to include one or more power seats to a boat or other watercraft. In one embodiment, the assembly with the platform is configured for mounting and / or coupling to a pre-existing seat mount on a watercraft which is generally an upright post fixing the location of the seat within the watercraft. The assembly comprises mechanics for moving the housing, and thus the platform supported thereon, laterally (e.g., forward and backward) with respect to a vertical axis of the preexisting seat post for seat mounting, or otherwise laterally in a plane parallel to the seat mount locations on the boat and / or fixture of the boat. The platform of the assembly can then be raised and lowered with respect to the housing of the assembly (or surface or floor of the watercraft or boat) and further wherein these mechanics also allow for forward and rear tilting and other adjustment of the platform position and thus the seat installed thereon or otherwise coupled thereto. The platform can be raised and lowered vertically at both sides separately and together, thus providing various tilt and positionslocations for the seat (e.g., height). The platform then provides a mounting and support surface for a seat or chair base of any type. The seat or chair base may then be mounted on top of the platform and supported thereon, that is, mounted in a fixed manner so that the seat or chair base is moveable with movement of the platform.

[0069] In some embodiments, the seat and platform are further configured such that the seat coupled to the platform is positioned in a manner where the platform and at least a portion of the housing reside in a space within the bottom of the seat such that overall the assembly has a lower clearance with the housing being obscured by the base or bottom of the seat when in a first, lowered, seat position.

[0070] The assembly comprises a base or housing which supports working components of the assembly therein. The housing has a floor where the sliding mechanism is mounted. That is, in contrast to prior art mechanisms for power seating, the sliding mechanism for controlling horizontal or lateral movement of the assembly is integrated into and / or otherwise directly on top of a floor of the assembly housing. An opening, a slot in the housing and the sliding mechanism are thus positioned below power components and mechanisms for raising and lowering the platform. The elements which secure the seat to the boat extend into the housing through this slot and are secured to the housing via one or more plates or other connections at a location of the sliding mechanisms. This allows the housing itself to move back and forth while the connection of the housing to the boat surface, such as the seat post, remains static. The sliding mechanism is built into the assembly, for example, on the bottom of the housing, rather than being bolted or otherwise secured to the assembly for effecting movement of the housing in a horizontal direction. Thus, the platform and the housing slide with the seat thereon, together as a unit, with respect to the mounting post.

[0071] The assembly is mountable on to the seat post or optionally another horizontal surface of the boat or a boat fixture, allowing the assembly to be mounted in a manner where a mounting surface of the boat (e.g., seat post) or a mounting mechanism extending from the boat into the assembly supports the assembly while allowing the housing to move in lateral, reciprocal directions with respect to the mounting. This mounting does not obstruct the mechanics for powering movement of the platform as these mechanics are carried within and with the housing. For example, mechanics for powering movement of the platform and mechanics enabling various movement of the platform itself are provided within this housing. This housing can be provided with an opening in a floor thereof such that the housing is configured to mount directly to a seat post or other support surface on a watercraft that otherwise would support a boat seat. The housing mounts to the seat post or other fixture ofthe boat or hull surface in order to provide the platform at a location for seating. For example, when mounted to a pre-existing seat post, the assembly rests at a height substantially equal to or otherwise approximately that of a preexisting boat seat which is removed when installing the assembly according to one or more embodiments herein.

[0072] Further uniquely, the assembly can be mounted to other surfaces and fixtures on the boat to provide additional powered seating. The assembly mounts to various surfaces, where a mounting post or plate is provided with one end configured to be bolted or otherwise secured to the selected boat surface, a vertical height extending into the assembly through an elongated slot in a bottom of the assembly and secured to a cap inside the assembly. This allows the assembly to be mounted to a flat surface on a boat with clearance to allow the assembly to move horizontally with respect to the surface on which it is mounted, while remaining substantially flush therewith. In this embodiment, the mounting post or plate is similarly connected to the assembly at a location inside the assembly, and more specifically secured to or otherwise coupled to the assembly at a location inside the housing and above the sliding mechanism.

[0073] The housing of the assembly itself moves laterally (e.g., forward and backward) about the post, carrying the platform therewith. That is, when the platform (and any seat mounted to and / or supported on that platform) is moved forward or rearward, the housing moves with it. This is beneficial and allows a user to adjust a forward and / or rear location of the seat with respect to the vertical axis of the post without having any obstruction below the seat. That is, the housing moves with the platform and seat to prevent an exposed housing which obstructs the user’s legs or space behind the seat.

[0074] The platform is then vertically movable with respect to its operable connections within the housing of the assembly. That is, the platform raises and lowers with respect to the housing and can selectively raise or lower on one or other sides in a manner that tilts the seat in one or more directions. This allows a user to not only adjust height of the seat, but also adjust tilt, allowing users of different sizes to sit comfortably within various boats. For example, a user may install the assembly in a driver’s seat of the watercraft and adjust the seat height and / or tilt to allow the user to see over the bow of the boat when the boat is accelerating in a manner where the front of the boat pops up, making it difficult to see the water and / or space in front of the speeding boat.

[0075] In one or more embodiments a seat may be mounted on the platform wherein the seat is a preexisting seat capable of manual reclining or a static seat wherein the seat back and the seat base are secured in a manner where reclining of the seat is not possible. The seat mayalso be a backless seat or a single surface seating unit. The seat may also be a motorized or power seat for reclining and with or without powered arm rests, headrests, and / or a leg bolster.

[0076] In one or more embodiments, the assembly may be coupled to a powered seat, wherein the seat comprises a frame which includes a pivotally connected seat base and seat back allowing for powered / motorized reclining of the seat. The seat frame may further comprise other adjustable mechanisms for a powered / motorized headrest which is included in the frame and may be raised or lowered, or cantered for comfort. The seat frame may also comprise a powered / motorized leg bolster which may be stored or stowed up and / or partially under the seat base and / or up against or into the housing. The leg bolster may then extend and retract along a one or more channels allowing the leg bolster to provide a leg or foot support surface at various locations with respect to the seat base. Moreover, the bolter may be pivotally connected to the seat base such that the leg bolster may be cantered and / or moved forward or backward, providing various configurations for user comfort depending on user size. Further, the seat frame may also comprise powered / motorized arm rests movably supported on the frame. The arm rests may move vertically along a height of the seat back via a sliding connection with the seat back frame and may further be configured for motorized or manual leveling when raised to meet the elbow of the user. Such a powered seat further comprises an open space below the seat base which has dimensions which allow the seat frame to rest over at least a portion of the assembly housing meaning that the cushioned seat is an adjustable seat coupled to the platform of the housing in a cavity below the seat base but having sufficient cushion remaining for seating comfort.

[0077] Any one of the seats described herein may be coupled to the assembly housing via operable connection with the platform of the assembly. Mounting equipment including brackets and fasteners for example may be provided to secure the base of the seat via a / an interior frame element(s) to corresponding apertures in the platform. The seat may also be connected to the assembly via a quick connect mechanism which allows for an easily assembly and removably secured connection of the seat to the assembly. Mechanisms of quick disconnect may further include a quick cam over to couple the seat base to the assembly.

[0078] In one or more embodiments, the assembly may instead be integrated into a seat frame such that the seat is motorized for movement and reclining without requiring the housing and associated mounting mechanism. In such an embodiment, the seat base is slidable along a channeled connection with a mounting base which is stationarily mounted ina boat. The seat is configured to slide forward while concurrently reclining the seat back such that this motorized seat can be installed in watercraft with less space for seating and / or where equipment in the watercraft provide tight spaces for seating. The motors for powering seat movement and changing configurations of the seat back with respect to the seat base are integrated into the seat frame and carried by the enclosed seat itself.

[0079] In any one or more of the embodiments described herein, the seat frame comprising a seat back and a seat base may be constructed of light weight materials such as titanium. Steel frames are also contemplated and within the scope of this disclosure. Further, the framework assembly of the motorized seats described herein may allow for quick disconnect and assembly of the seat via connections of the seat back framework to the seat base framework that allow for ease of separation of the seat back framework and seat base framework for purposes of shipping for example. The seat back framework and seat base framework could also be connected via fixed connections including bracket welding. As the powered seats described herein eliminate manual levers for reclining of the seat back, the quick disconnect and quick assembly of the seat is another advantage.

[0080] In one or more embodiments, a motorized seat for a center console boat is provided. A center console sometimes abbreviated as CC, is a type of single-decked open hull boat where the helm is in the center. These are open water boats and frequently include pedestal seating which allows the user to stand and brace themselves against a vertical seat and also use the seat horizontally for sitting. The seat described herein provides a motorized back bolster connected to a base of the seat which is motorized with lift and extension allowing the back bolster to automatically move between two positions. In such a boat, one or more of the seats described herein can be installed and remotely controlled in the same manner as the seats and assemblies described herein. A multi -function display can be operable connected to the seats, allowing a user to automatically move one or all seats between a seated and a standing position on demand.

[0081] The assembly and / or seats of any one or more embodiments described herein may further comprise memory electronics and / or a memory program which is remotely controlled and / or controlled through a multi-button display or multi -function display (MFD) connected to the assembly which allows the user to adjust the horizontal and / or vertical position of the platform and thus a seat connected thereto, as well as the angle (tilt) of the platform, position of a backrest (reclined or upright), position of arm rests, position of a ballast, or combinations thereof. One or more memory settings may be used to transition the platform automatically between different preselected positions. For example, a memory setting may be a first settingautomatically moved to when the watercraft is accelerating, and which raises the platform and the seat for the user and or positions the seat in an upright position. Another setting may be a second cruising setting where the platform is lowered and tilted adjusted for comfort or the seat is reclined. It is also contemplated and within the scope of this disclosure that the assembly is provided with a level switch which automatically adjusts the platform position to level the platform and / or adjusts a position of armrests or other components of one or more embodiments of the seat.

[0082] On one or more embodiments described herein the seat itself may comprise a frame covered by a cushion and / or cushions and covers provided to encase the frame and motorized components thereof. In one or more embodiments the seat frame is provided with covered cushions with a “quick connect” mechanism for easy attachment and removed of the seat cushion, seat back cushion and / or cover therefor. The cover and cushion(s) for the seat may be secured to or around the frame of the seat with a hook and loop fastener system (Velcro®), snaps, buttons or other fasteners allowing for easy securing and removal for purposes of cleaning, replacement, and / or storage as well as allowing easy access to the mechanical moving parts and actuators which power the connected frame portions of the seat without requiring destruction of the seat cushioning and / or cover.

[0083] In one or more embodiments, the assembly, as used herein refers to a two-part seat and housing where the seat is a motorized seat to allow for reclining etc., as well as a fully integrated seat assembly, may further be provided with wired and / or wireless technology which connects the operating mechanics and control of the watercraft. The seats and / or assembly may be remotely controlled via wireless remote where each of the remote and the seat and / or assembly electronics are in remote, wired, wireless connections and combinations thereof. For example, the assembly and / or seat may be in communication and operability with a NMEA 2000 system (NMEA 2000, abbreviated to NMEA2k or N2K and standardized as IEC 61162-3, is a plug-and-play communications standard used for connecting marine sensors and display units within ships and boats) such that the assembly and adjustment of the platform and / or seat can be conducted through the dashboard or other onboard controls of the watercraft, as well as in some embodiments a wireless remote.

[0084] The assembly is a powered assembly, using for example, 12V power sources to power the platform control mechanics for movement of the platform. The assembly may be connectable to a power source of the watercraft or provided with its own power source that may be rechargeable.

[0085] One embodiment of an assembly 10 is illustrated in FIGS. 1-7B. Referring to FIGS. 5A-7B, the assembly 10 generally comprises a housing 12 with a platform 14 coupled thereto. The assembly further comprises a reciprocating linear movement mechanism 20 and a reciprocating vertical movement mechanism 18. The housing 12 as illustrated generally comprises a floor with upright side walls. The mounting post 16 can be of any type as the mounting post 16 is generally a separate component that is a part of the watercraft to which the aftermarket assembly 10 is installed. The housing 12 comprises an opening 22 in the floor which allows the post 16 of the watercraft to be received within the housing 12. A mounting mechanism is provided to secure the housing 12 over the post 16 while allowing the housing 12 to move horizontally with respect to the post 16. That is, the housing 12 of the assembly 10 moves back and forth about its mounting on the post 16 such that when installed on a watercraft the entire assembly moves horizontally when a user adjusts a position of the seat 100, 200 supported on the platform 14. The platform 14 is then raised and lowered vertically which the housing 12 remains vertically stationary once installed.

[0087] The housing 12 further encases the control and motorized components of the assembly 10 which operate to horizontally move the housing 12 with respect to the vertical axis A of the mounting post 16 as shown in FIGS. 1A-4B via the reciprocating linear movement mechanism 20, the sliding connection being position on or otherwise integrated into the floor of the housing. An elongated slot in the center of the housing 12 allows for the surface of the boat and / or other mounting mechanism connected to the boat to extend into the housing for static connection thereto. The motorized components also include the reciprocating vertical movement mechanism 18 also referred to as the mechanisms to vertically raise and lower the platform 14 along this same vertical axis A and angularly tilt the platform 14 in one or more directions with respect to the vertical axis A.

[0088] This platform 14 is connected to vertical lift mechanisms 18 with, for example, a lift mechanism 18A, 18B provided on each of two opposing sides or ends of the platform 14. In the embodiment illustrated these lift mechanism 18 A, 18B are provided at a front and a rear of the platform 14 and housing 12. These lift mechanisms can be vertically actuated together to raise and lower the platform vertically with respect to the housing 12. One or both liftmechanisms are configured to raise and / or lower the end of the platform 14 supported thereon to provide tilt to the platform with respect to a horizontal orientation of the housing 12. The lift mechanisms 18 A, 18B can also be actuated independently to raise or lower one end of the platform to provide a forward or rearward tilt to the platform 14. The platform 14 is also a substantially flat surface that is configured to support a seat mounted thereon. For example, a boat seat 100, 200 can be fixedly secured to the platform and moved with the platform 14. Adjustment of the seat can be activated via user interaction with a key pad or interface 19 which is in communication with a microprocessor configured to save one or more positions to memory and move the seat to said position or configuration via key pad interaction.

[0089] In further detail, the horizontal movement of the housing 12 is motorized and may be carried out by any one of various linear actuators or the like 25 and tracks to provide motorized movement to the housing 12 as well as the platform 14 connected thereto and any seat supported thereon. As shown in detail in FIGS. 6A-7B, the assembly is provided with a mechanism 23 to securely receive the post 16 therein and support the assembly 10 thereon. The assembly 10 is secured to the post 16 via the mechanism which comprises one or more brackets which securely mount a track portion of the assembly 10 to the post 16. This allows the assembly 10 to move back and forth along the track when a user positions the assembly 10. That is, the assembly 10 itself moves back and forth with respect to the static connection of the assembly to the mounting surface, where the mounting surface is provided within the assembly. The assembly 10 then is provided with a connection to the track that allows the assembly to move along the track in the forward and backward directions while carrying the platform 14 and while the post 16 remains stationary with respect to its mounting on the watercraft floor. This track is provided on the floor of the housing 12 or is otherwise integrated into a floor of the housing and is provided below the static connection point for the assembly and the watercraft or boat. The opening 22 in the assembly 10 floor is an elongated slot or other openings that provides accommodation for the mounting surface as the assembly 10 moves so as not to obstruct the movement of the assembly 10.

[0090] Similarly, the vertical lift mechanism 18 is provided within the housing 12 and is operably coupled to the platform 14 to raise and lower one or both ends of the platform 12. The lift mechanisms 18a, 18b are positioned in corners of the assembly housing 12 and may provide any various mechanism for vertically lifting and lowering the platform 14 secured thereon.

[0091] One or more motors, such as 12 volt motors are provided in the housing 12 to power the movement components 18, 20. The motors may then be connected to onboard batteries and / or other electrical supplies for the watercraft.

[0092] As shown in FIGS. 1A-4B and FIGS. 8A-10D, a seat 100 may be mounted on top of the platform 14 or otherwise operably coupled thereto. The seat 100 may be a manually adjustable or static seat 100. However, additionally or alternatively, as shown in FIGS. 2A- 2C, the seat 100 may be configured and / or modified below the base thereof with a mounting mechanism 102 such as a cross bar and / or other mechanical means which allow the platform 14 to be coupled to an interior surface or surfaces of the base 104 of the seat 100 such that the platform 14 resides within the base 104 of the seat 100 and sides of the seat thus extend downwardly over at least a portion of the housing 12. In such an embodiment, the seat 100 is positioned lower with respect to the housing 12 such that the platform 14 and housing 12 are at least partially within a height of the base 104 of the seat 100. Such modification may require adjustment of cushioning provided in the seat 100 but does maintain a cushioned seat base for comfort as the interior open space in the seat base required may be in the range of 1- 3 inches and / or where this space is otherwise void to allow for movement of the cushioned part of the base of the seat depending on the weight of the user.

[0093] Additionally, or alternatively, a powered seat 200 may be mounted to the assembly as shown in FIGS. 3A-4B and 8A-10D. The frame 202 of such a seat 200 is illustrated without seat cushioning and covering for ease of illustration of the interior components of the seat 200 which allow for various motorized movements to provide a multi-way adjustable seat 200 that can be coupled to the assembly 10 described above and moved with the assembly 10 and platform 14 as described above. The powered seat 200 as illustrated comprises a seat back 204 pivotally connected about a bracket 205 to a seat base 206 wherein an actuator 208 powers reclining of the seat 200 and returning of the seat 200 to the upright position. Arm rests 210 are provided which are slidably coupled to the vertical framework 212 of the seat back 204 and are also powered by a dedicated actuator 214. The arm rests 210 as illustrated are configured further for self-leveling about pivotal connections with a bracket 215 which slidably couples the arm rests 210 to the seat back framework 212. This connection for selfleveling of the arm rests 210 as they are raised or lowered with the reclining or upright seat back 204 can be powered or manual.

[0094] Optionally this seat 200 may be further provided with a powered leg bolster 216 which raises and lowers as well as extends and retracts from the frame lengths 218 as shown in FIGS. 10A-10D. A linear actuator 220 is provided to control raising and lowering of theleg bolster and a second linear actuator 222 is provided as shown to control extending and retracting of the leg bolster 216 surface itself to provide a smaller or larger leg bolster surface 216 when in use and / or as stowed. When stowed this leg bolster 216 is retracted and raised to a position which abuts a front face of the assembly 10 housing 12. A leg bolster pivot bracket 224 is provided attached to a location of the seat base 206 frame 226. A slide arm 228 is provided for extending and retracting the leg bolster 216. The leg bolster 216 is further moveable by the bolster mount 228 configured for tilting the leg bolster 216. is further. The seat 200 is provided with various pivoting connections in operable connection with a power means or motor, such as an actuator, allow for independent movement and control about each pivotal connection which allows this seat to be adjusted further in configuration in addition to seat location provided by the housing assembly which laterally moves the seat 200 connected thereto and can also raise and lower as well as forward and reverse tilt the seat 200 with respect to the assembly 10 and platform 14.

[0095] Optionally this seat 200 may be provided with a headrest 230 which is configured to move vertically via one or more linear actuators wherein the headrest 230 is operable coupled to the seat back 204.

[0096] Another embodiment of the present invention relates to the motorized movement and adjustment assembly being integrated into a multi-way adjustable seat 300. That is, a seat 300 is provided having a framework 302 for the seat 300 which allows the seat 300 to adjust with respect to incline when the integrated seat 300 is secured in a watercraft 350. The seat 300 illustrated in FIGS. 11-21 has the cushion(s) and / or covering removed for ease of illustration of the framework and motorized components of the seat 300. For example, this seat 300 as illustrated in FIGS. 11-22 can be mounted in a watercraft or boat 350 with limited clearance for reclining a seat, such as a bass boat, while retaining the ability to recline. Bass boats and the like are designed with anglers in mind, and as such, they typically feature ample storage space for fishing gear, tackle, and other essentials. This storage space is usually located in the form of compartments and lockers 352 that are strategically placed around the boat. These compartments and lockers 352 generally limit the room for seating and further limit the ability of the seating to be adjustable for recline. However, the integrated seat 300 is motorized and controlled to move a base portion 304 of the seat forward concurrently with reclining of the operably connected backrest or seat back portion 306 of the seat 300 to allow for reclining of the seat 300 even where an installation location of the seat 300 may otherwise provide an obstructed area behind the seat 300 preventing traditional recline. The seat 300 isalso configured for adjustment such that a front portion 308 of the base 304 of the seat 300 can be raised when reclining the backrest or seat back 306.

[0097] This integrated seat 300 assembly comprises the framework 302 which includes a seat back frame 310, a seat base frame 312 and a mounting base frame 314. The seat back frame 310 is pivotally connected with a bracket 311 to the seat base frame 312 at a rear location on the seat base 312. The seat base 312 is slidably coupled to the mounting base 314. The mounting base framework 314 comprises channels or slots 316 on opposing side framework lengths 312a, 312b which allow a bracket or protrusion on the corresponding side frame pieces 312a, 312b of the seat base 312 to couple to and slide within and along the channel or slots 316. Dedicated actuators 318 are provided for controlling the sliding of the seat base 312 in reciprocating directions along the mounting base 314. A dedicated actuator 319 is also provided for powering reclining of the seat back frame 310. The seat back frame 310 is then pivotally connected to the seat base frame 312 at a rear location on the seat base 312. This allows the seat back 310 and seat base 312 to move together when the seat base 312 is moved along the mounting base 314 and the seat back 310 to recline and return to upright about the pivotal connection 320 between the seat back 310 and the seat base 312 via dedicated actuators 322, 324 for these movements. In operation, as the seat back 310 is reclined, the seat base 312 slides outwardly along the mounting base 314 to pull the bottom of the seat back 310 forward with the seat base 312. When returning to an upright seat back position, the seat base 312 pushes the bottom of the seat back 310 rearwardly towards an upright position. These movements are both powered but occur concurrently.

[0098] As shown in FIGS. 12-16B and 18, a leg bolster 326 may optionally be provided with the seat 300 and may also be motorized for extending when the seat 300 reclines and base 312 of the seat 300 is raised, and stowing when the seat 300 is in an upright position. Clearance for the leg bolster 326 is created when the front portion of the base 312 of the seat 300 is raised while reclining the seat 300. The leg bolster is extendable and retractable as well as raised and lowered in the substantially the same manner as leg bolster 216. The leg bolster includes at least one leg bolster pivot bracket 327 and linear actuator 325 therefore. Further optionally, headrest portion 328 may be raised or lowered as well with respect to the seat 300 and about a slidable connection to the seat back 310. These functions are each powered functions with one or more dedicated actuators 330. Similarly, one or more arm rests 332 may optionally be provided on the seat 300. The armrests 332 may be raised or lowered with respect to the height of the seat back 310 via brackets 334 slidably connecting the arm rests 332 to the sides of the frame of the backrest 310 and powered by actuator 335 on each side ofthe seat 300 for each armrest 332 in the pair of arm rests. The arm rests 332 may further be mechanically, via non-powered means, self-leveled when the seatback 310 is reclined or moved to upright, to provide a comfortable position for a user.

[0099] Referring to FIG. 16B, which illustrates motors, or actuators, 325 and 323 which are coupled to the frame of the leg bolster 326 and are actuated to move the leg bolster 326 upwardly via actuator 325 and outwardly via actuator 323 (and downwardly and inwardly for storage). Actuator 323 actuates a shaft 323a shaft which as illustrated is a shaft extending through the leg bolster 326 body and cushion (not illustrated for ease of illustration of the internal components) and raises (or lowers) the leg bolster 326 concurrently as actuator 325 rotates the frame shaft 325a to pull the base 312 forward and lift the base 312 (as well as lower the base and push the base 312 backward) with respect to the mounting base 314. While FIG. 16B is shown and described in the context of seat 300, this similar configuration for moving a seat 100, 200, 300, 400 or combinations thereof can be incorporated with the corresponding leg bolster or on its own to move a seat forward while lifting a front of the seat for reclining the back of the seat and deploying a bolster in a seat position on a pedestal, on a deck or any other location on a watercraft where space may be limited, partially obscured or even just conserved. This configuration as applies to a leg bolster 326 as described can be similarly incorporated into a back bolster 406 as described in connection with seat 400 below. The configuration orientation may be flipped or switched to accommodate directional movement of the respective bolster.

[0100] A motorized seat 400 for a center console boat or the like is illustrated in FIGS. 23- 25. The seat 400 can be a pedestal seat or a deck seat. The seat 400 is operably coupled to and / or supported by a preexisting pedestal 16 of a watercraft. The seat 400 comprises an upright seat back 402 and a horizontal seat base 404. A back bolster 406 is coupled to the horizontal seat base using lever 408 and push arm 410 mechanics in a manner similar that of the leg bolster 216 and 326 described herein where in the orientation is adjusted to direct the back bolster 406 upwardly and back to a position on top of the seat base 404 as shown in FIGS. 23 and 25. This provides a user support surface 412 when a user is standing on the boat for example. As shown in FIG. 24, the lever 408 and push arm 410 also operate to extend and lower the back bolster 406 to place and hold the back bolster 406 in front of the seat base 404 to provide an extended seat base 404 for seating. A dedicated actuator 414 is provided for powering the movement of the back bolster 406 as shown in FIG. 25. The actuator 414 is further in communication with a controller which allows for on demand movement of the back bolster 406.

[0101] In any one or more of the seats described herein the seat 100, 200, 300, 400 may be mounted in a location with limited clearance, pedestal mounted, deck mounted or otherwise mounted in a watercraft of varying styles and configurations. The examples described in the embodiments illustrated are merely exemplary for ease of illustration.

[0102] Any one or more of the embodiments described herein may be combined to provide a powered seat for a boat of any type. The seat may be multi-way adjustable including configured for 3-way adjustment, 6-way adjustment, or more and up to 18-way adjustment or more via powered or motorized mechanisms.

[0103] The assembly as described here, assembly referring to the powered seat in any configuration or embodiment described herein, may be provided with a seat controller. The seat controller comprises a microprocessor and memory which controls the operation of the seat. The seat may then be provided with one or more memory presets as discussed previously above. For example, the seat may be configured with a memory unit where the memory unit uses non-volatile memory to save multiple positions of the seat. For example, pressing one or memory buttons associated with a saved seat position and / or configuration actuates movement of the seat to a corresponding saved position and / or configuration.

[0104] To correlate a memory button with a saved seat position or configuration a user can pre-set one or more positions by moving seat to desired position and / or adjusted configuration and actuate a SET button while also actuating a memory button to correlate the seat settings to the memory button as the seat settings are saved via a microprocessor in nonvolatile memory.

[0105] In order for the executable memory to save one or more seat locations for moving the seat between selected memory seat locations, the position of the seat and associated configuration (reclined, etc.) must be tracked. To accomplish this, a position feedback device may be integrated into each of the actuators incorporated into the seat and configured to move the seat. Such feedback devices may include, but are not limited to, potentiometers and / or other absolute position encoders, magnetic, optical and / or other incremental position encoders. If an incremental encoder is utilized, a “home” position or reference point is used as a “zero” or calibration position. The microprocessor is then configured to track position(s) by counting pulses from the zero position. This allows the microprocessor to always know where the seat is located.

[0106] Alternatively, the microprocessor may be configured to periodically save the current position to non-volatile memory. In such a set up, the seat does not need to be moved to the home position every time the seat is powered up.

[0107] The controller for the seat may also be configured to sense when power is cut or terminated and save the current position to the non-volatile memory, so that the seat does not need to go to the home or zero position first when powered up.

[0108] Additionally or alternatively, reduction in complexity of programming can be incorporated into the seat controller such that the position of the seat is estimated by measuring a duration of time each actuator is moving and adjusting the position estimate based on the time of movement and the expected speed of the actuator. Such a method is prone to accumulation error and / or less precise position memory based at least in part on changes in the voltage supply which may cause the actuators to run faster or slower than the expected speed. To compensate, a correction factor may be used to estimate the actuator speed over the full range of operating voltage and will ensure a more accurate estimated remembered position. Additional errors may be accounted for, such as position error due to changes in the weight of different users causing an actuator to run faster or slower than the expected speed. To compensate, the seat control can measure motor current to estimate load to supplement the estimated position data. This information can be used to generate a correction factor that may be used to make the estimated position more accurate. Combining these correction factors provides an accurate estimate of seat position that can be maintained over time.

[0109] The seat controller may also be configured to monitor seat loads so as to protect seat actuators from failure due to overload. An automatic stop mechanism can be installed for use when an actuator is operated with a very high load such that the overloaded actuator may slow or stall. A slowed or stalled actuator will draw unsustainably high current. If this condition is maintained for any length of time the motor will overheat and fail. To address this potential condition, the seat controller may also be configured to monitor actuator speed based on position encoder feedback. If an actuator speed is reduced to a point where it is at risk of overheating the seat control can stop the actuator avoiding a failure. The seat controller may also monitor the actuator motor’s current and stop the actuator before overheating and failure can occur.

[0110] The seat controller may also be configured to monitor the actuator motor’s actual winding temperature by inserting a temperature sensor inside the motor. The seat controller may then stop the motor if the internal temperature reaches a point where further rise will cause failure.

[0111] By combining some or all of the above configurations, the seat controller can ensure the seat actuators do not fail due to overload.

[0112] The assemblies herein and / or seats may further incorporated bellows and other mechanical guards may be used to prevent body parts from being pinched by the seat adjustment and moving mechanism(s). The assembly and / or seats described herein may also include electrical means that can be employed to additionally protect the user(s). For example, by monitoring actuator speed using encoder feedback or timing, the actuator can be stopped if speed drops to a level consistent with an obstruction causing a slowing or stopping movement. By monitoring actuator motor current, the actuator can be stopped if current rises to a point consistent with encountering an obstruction. One or both mechanisms can be incorporated into a seat and / or assembly and when both mechanisms are combined safety may be further improved. Further, a reverse actuation may be initiated manually or automatically if an obstruction is encountered to further increase safety of the powered seat.

[0113] Although the present disclosure has been described with reference to preferred embodiments, workers skilled in the art will recognize that changes may be made in form and detail without departing from the spirit and scope of the disclosure.
