[0007] Ultrasound probes are generally power-limited due to heat problems affecting image quality. Active fluid cooling with heat exchangers in the probe and fluid pipes through the cable exist (e.g., Siemens 4Zlc, see 4Zlc real-time volume imaging transducer whitepaper (June 2008), https: / / cdn0.scrvt.eom / 39b415fb07de4d9656c7b516d8e2d907 / 1800000000064735 / 81ce01e55d56AVhitep aper_4Zlc_1800000000064735.pdf). However, these systems are typically clunky, reducing operator satisfaction and resulting in operator injuries. Additionally, these systems are often unreliable due to leakage and other issues associated with liquid coolants. The complexity and maintenance requirements of liquid cooling systems further add to the overall system cost. There is a need for a simpler, more reliable cooling solution that can effectively manage heat generation in ultrasound probes, allowing for increased power consumption and improved performance without compromising safety or image quality.

[0009] Open loop cooling systems are those which circulate new or fresh coolant, while closeloop cooling systems re-circulate the same coolant and typically comprise a heat exchanger to remove heat from the coolant.

[0011] It is, inter alia, an object of the invention to provide to provide for a reliable active cooling solution for ultrasound probes. The invention is defined by the independent claims. Advantageous embodiments are defined in the dependent claims.

[0045] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS
[0046] The invention relates to an actively cooled ultrasound system. In particular, the ultrasound system comprises an inlet of a coolant at a cable connector, wherein the coolant is transported to an ultrasound probe through a cable connecting the cable connector and the ultrasound probe. Within the ultrasound probe, the coolant is transported past electronic components that generate heat or heat sinks for such components. Once the coolant has absorbed heat inside the ultrasound probe, the heated coolant is transported back to the cable connector through the cable. At the cable connector the coolant leaves the system through an outlet. Placing the inlet and outlet of the coolant in the connector has the advantage that the potential of disinfection liquid ingress during disinfection of the probe is reduced. In general, only the probe will be subject to disinfection liquid, sometimes part of the cable, but not generally the cable connector.
[0047] As described, the inlet may connect to a first coolant reservoir, and the outlet may connect to a second coolant reservoir. The first and second coolant reservoirs may also be the same, thereby forming a closed-loop system. In this way, liquid may be drawn through the inlet to cool the ultrasound probe. For example, distilled water provides excellent cooling capabilities while reducing risks of short circuits due to its low electrical conductivity. However, such liquid cooling systems may still suffer problems arising from liquid leakage within the probe, additional erosion due to the impurity of the cooling liquid, etc. Furthermore, such liquid coolants may not always come into contact with the delicate electronics such that dedicated heat dissipation paths, e.g., a heat sink, may be necessary from which the heat is transferred to the coolant. The inventors have realized that if air is used as coolant instead, many of these drawbacks disappear, despite the fact that air is not typically used in such cooling systems owing to its lower cooling capacity as coolant. For example, air may get into contact with the electronic circuits directly reducing the need for further complicated thermal management systems. Furthermore, an airbased cooling system is more reliable and less prone to problems ranging from leakage or coolant loss. In particular, when using air as coolant, the inlet and outlet need not be connected to any particular coolant reservoir, and surrounding air may be drawn into the ultrasound cooling system through the inlet. Thereby reducing the complexity of the cooling system even further. Finally, when air surrounding the connector is drawn and hot air is expelled back to the surrounding the cooling system may be an open-loop cooling system. However, the invention as described herein may also be used for coolants other than air such as liquids. Similarly, the teachings may apply to both open- and closed-loop cooling systems.
[0048] Regardless of the type of coolant, according to an embodiment of the invention, coolant is drawn in through the inlet of the cable connector using a heat pump which essentially sucks in the coolant. The sucking power of the heat pump may further be adjusted based on cooling needs depending on the current state of the ultrasound probe. For example, the ultrasound probe may comprise a temperature sensor and depending on temperature measurements the heat pump intensity is determined. 2024PF00606

[0050] Similarly, depending on the current operation an expected heat generation may be determined based on which the heat pump intensity is determined. In this way, the heat pump may suck in air quicker when the ultrasound probe generates a lot of heat or is comparatively hot, while it sucks in less air when the ultrasound probe generates comparatively little heat. The intensity of the heat pump may also be made dependent on the image quality. It is known that the image quality degrades as the temperature of the transducer elements increases. In particular, it is advantageous to keep the temperature of the electronics within the ultrasound probe between 60 and 80 degrees Celsius. The heat pump may thus change intensity in order to maintain the temperature of the electronic components within said margins.
[0051] In some examples, the system may further comprise dedicated housings for components within the ultrasound probe that generate heat. These dedicated housings may in particular be configured to reduce or stop any heat dissipation within the ultrasound probe from the heat generating components to other components of the ultrasound probe. Most preferably, these dedicated housings may be configured to reduce any heat transfer from heat generating components within the ultrasound probe to ultrasound transducers of the ultrasound probe. In this way, the temperature of the ultrasound transducers can be kept lower, improving, image quality. Or in other words, the ultrasound transducers do not heat up reducing image quality.

[0056] In a particularly advantageous embodiment, at least a part of the electronic circuit is enclosed in the middle section 420 of the cooling circuit. In other words, a conduit is provided to circulate coolant directly past the electronic circuit 150. In such a way, the coolant may directly get into contact with the electronic circuit components. Thereby increasing the ability of the coolant to carry away heat. The middle section enclosing the electronic circuit 150 may further comprise a thermal insulation layer configured to thermally insulate the electronic circuit 150. In this way, heat generated by the electronic circuit 150 can be contained without this heat dissipating into other parts of the ultrasound probe 100. In particular, the thermal insulation layer may be configured to avoid or reduce heat dissipation from the electronic circuit 150 to the imaging sensor 120 since heat on the imaging sensor 120 can have a negative impact on image quality.
[0057] In an example, the ultrasound probe further comprises a temperature sensor determining temperature inside the ultrasound probe 100. For example, a suitable temperature sensor may be placed near the electronic circuit 150. In other examples, a temperature sensor may be placed near the imaging sensor. For example, a temperature may be inferred based on a power consumption of the ultrasound probe 100. For example, the temperature may be inferred based on an obtained image quality or an image quality decay over time. These alternatives alone or in combination allow for flexible and accurate monitoring of the temperature within the ultrasound probe. For example, the cooling system may be configured to provide more coolant or increase the coolant flow rate in order to increase the cooling capacity. In particular, based on any determined or inferred temperature or image quality decay, an intensity of a heat pump as described in more detail below may be adjusted to adjust the coolant flow rate. It is understood that the temperature sensing means or at least the processor that determines the temperature is controllably connected to the heat pump to adjust the heat pump’s intensity. For example, the electronic circuit 150 of the probe may be connected with the heat pump through one or more of the plurality of connectors 210 in the cable to control the heat pump and adjust the heat pump intensity based on the measured, determined or inferred temperature. In another example, particularly when the temperature can be determined through power drawn by the probe from the host, the control of the heat pump intensity may be performed from a connection to the host 300.
