Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to a highly concentrated liquid laundry or liquid dishwashing composition. Background Art

[0002] Concentrated fabric treatment compositions contain surfactants to provide appropriate cleaning benefits. They may also preferably contain cleaning adjuvants, such as chelating agents and / or enzymes, and cleaning polymers, such as polyamines and soil release polymers. Similarly, there is a demand for increasingly concentrated compositions, particularly in the form of unit doses, such as water-soluble capsules, which typically contain about 15 to 25 mL, but there is a strong desire for smaller doses of such products.

[0003] We have unexpectedly discovered that reducing the dosage of a composition presents new formulation difficulties, particularly with respect to how to provide the same cleaning performance with a smaller dosage.

[0004] Despite the prior art, there remains a need for more concentrated laundry and dishwashing detergent compositions. Summary of the invention

[0005] Therefore, in a first aspect, the present invention provides a concentrated detergent composition comprising less than 5% by weight of water, an anionic surfactant and a non-aqueous solvent, wherein the anionic surfactant includes an anionic surfactant with monoisopropylamine (MIPA) and / or triisopropanolamine (TIPA) counterions, and the composition comprises a linear alkylbenzene sulfonate.

[0006] We have unexpectedly found that MIPA and / or TIPA counterions of anionic surfactants provide improved products when low water levels are used.

[0007] Preferably, the anionic surfactant having monoisopropylamine (MIPA) and / or triisopropanolamine (TIPA) counterions comprises 50 to 100% by weight of the anionic surfactant, more preferably 75 to 100%, more preferably 90 to 100% by weight of the anionic surfactant.

[0008] Preferably, the anionic surfactant with MIPA counterion is a C10-18 alkyl ether sulfate. Most preferably, it is a C12 alkyl ether sulfate. Most preferred is MIPA LES, a C12 alkyl ether sulfate with MIPA counterion.

[0009] Weight proportions are calculated for the protonated form of the appropriate surfactant.

[0010] Preferably, the composition is visually clear. Visually clear means that the composition is less than 20 NTU when 1 part of the premix mixture is diluted in 3 parts of water.

[0011] The composition comprises anionic surfactants and nonionic surfactants, a portion of which are preferably secondary alcohol ethoxylates. DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0012] In the context of granular detergent formulations, the term "surfactant" means a surface active agent that provides a detersive (ie, cleaning) benefit to dishwashing or laundry compositions used as part of a domestic washing process.

[0013] The composition comprises a nonionic surfactant. Preferably, for a dishwashing composition, the composition comprises from 10 to 80% by weight of a nonionic surfactant based on the total weight of the composition, more preferably from 30 to 60% by weight of the composition.

[0014] For laundry compositions, preferably the nonionic surfactant is present in an amount of from 5 to 45% by weight of the composition.

[0015] Secondary alcohol ethoxylate

[0016] Preferably, the nonionic surfactant comprises a secondary alcohol ethoxylate. The secondary alcohol ethoxylate comprises an alkyl chain having a secondary ethoxylate attached thereto. The secondary ethoxylate comprises 2 to 20 EO groups, preferably 5 to 12, most preferably 9 EO groups.

[0017] The alkyl chain preferably contains 8 to 22, more preferably 10 to 14, most preferably 12 carbons.

[0018] The alkyl chains are preferably saturated.

[0019] Preferably, the secondary alcohol ethoxylate is according to the following formula (I):

[0020]

[0021]

[0022] Among them, for Tergitol 15-S-5, n+n1=12, and n2=4; for Tergitol 15-S-7, n+n1=12, and n2=6; and for Tergitol 15-S-9, n+n1=12, and n2=8.

[0023] A preferred secondary alcohol ethoxylate is Tergitol 15-S 9, ex Dow.

[0024] Preferably, the secondary alcohol ethoxylate is present in an amount of 10 to 100% by weight of the total nonionic surfactant, more preferably 12% by weight of the total nonionic surfactant.

[0025] This corresponds to about 5% by weight of the total composition to about 60% by weight of the total composition.

[0026] We have surprisingly found that the lowest secondary alcohol surfactant levels are preferred to provide stable and clear products as described above.

[0027] Other nonionic surfactants

[0028] Other nonionic surfactants are polyoxyalkylene compounds having various block and hetero (random) structures. For example, they may contain a single alkylene oxide block, or they may be a diblock alkoxide or a triblock alkoxide. Within the block structure, the blocks may be all ethylene oxide or all propylene oxide, or the blocks may contain a heterogeneous mixture of alkylene oxides. Examples of such materials include C8 to C 22 Alkylphenol ethoxylates having an average of 5 to 25 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of alkylphenol; and fatty alcohol ethoxylates, such as C8 to C 18 Straight or branched chain primary or secondary alcohol ethoxylates having an average of 2 to 40 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of alcohol.

[0029] A preferred class of nonionic surfactants for use in the present invention (other than secondary alcohol ethoxylates) includes aliphatic C 12 To C 15 Straight chain primary alcohol ethoxylates having an average of 3 to 20, more preferably 5 to 10, moles of ethylene oxide per mole of alcohol.

[0030] The alcohol ethoxylate may be provided as a single raw material component or as a mixture of components.

[0031] Preferably, LAS for laundry compositions is present at from 10 to 50% by weight of the composition.

[0032] Another class of nonionic surfactants includes the alkyl polyglycosides.

[0033] Anionic surfactants

[0034] The composition comprises anionic surfactants. The non-soap anionic surfactants used in the present invention are generally salts of organic sulfuric and sulfonic acids having an alkyl group containing from about 8 to about 22 carbon atoms, the term "alkyl" being used to include the alkyl portion of a higher acyl group. Examples of such materials include alkyl sulfates, C12-C14 alkyl ether sulfates, alkyl aryl sulfonates, alpha-olefin sulfonates and mixtures thereof. The alkyl group preferably contains 10 to 18 carbon atoms and may be unsaturated. The C12-C14 alkyl ether sulfates may contain 1 to 10 ethylene oxide or propylene oxide units per molecule, preferably 1 to 3 ethylene oxide units per molecule.

[0035] Commonly used in laundry liquid compositions are C12-C14 alkyl ether sulfates having a straight or branched chain alkyl group of 12 to 14 carbon atoms and containing an average of 1 to 3 EO units per molecule. A preferred example is sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) in which the predominantly C12 lauryl alkyl groups are ethoxylated with an average of 3 EO units per molecule.

[0036] The C12-C14 alkyl ether sulfate may be provided as a single raw material component or as a mixture of components.

[0037] The counterions for any anionic surfactant used in the compositions described herein are primarily monoisopropylamine (MIPA) and / or TIPA, but other counterions are also available, such as alkali metals, such as sodium or potassium; or ammonia counterions, such as ammonium, monoethanolamine (MEA), diethanolamine (DEA) or triethanolamine (TEA). Mixtures of these counterions may also be used.

[0038] Compositions according to the present invention may preferably include alkylbenzene sulfonates, particularly linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) having an alkyl chain length of 10 to 18 carbon atoms. Commercial LAS is a mixture of closely related isomers and homologues of alkyl chain homologues, each of which contains an aromatic ring sulfonated in the "para-position" and connected to a linear alkyl chain at any position except the terminal carbon atom. The linear alkyl chain typically has a chain length of 11 to 15 carbon atoms, with the chain length of the primary material being approximately C12. Each alkyl chain homologue is composed of a mixture of all possible sulfophenyl isomers except the 1-phenyl isomer. LAS is typically formulated into the composition in the form of an acid (i.e., HLAS), and then at least partially in situ neutralization.

[0039] Some alkyl sulfate surfactants (PAS), such as non-ethoxylated primary and secondary alkyl sulfates having an alkyl chain length of 10 to 18, may be used.

[0040] The composition comprises an anionic surfactant. Preferably, the composition comprises 10 to 80 wt% of anionic surfactant based on the total weight of the composition, more preferably 30 to 60 wt% of anionic surfactant based on the weight of the composition.

Dequest(R) 2066 (diethylenetriamine penta(methylenephosphonic acid) or DTPMP heptasodium) is also suitable, but less preferred because of its poor cleaning effect.

[0074] water

[0075] Preferably, the composition comprises less than 5% water. Free water refers to water added to the composition and does not include water added along with other raw materials into which water is incorporated. For example, many surfactants are commercially available as aqueous solutions or suspensions of surfactants.

[0076] Most preferably, the composition comprises less than 1% by weight water.

[0077] Water-soluble film composition

[0078] When the composition is a unit dose composition, it is preferably contained in a pouch formed from a water soluble film.

[0079] Such water-soluble film compositions, optional ingredients for use therein, and methods for their preparation are well known in the art, whether for use in making relatively thin water-soluble films (eg, as bag materials) or otherwise.

[0080] In one class of embodiments, the water-soluble film comprises a water-soluble material. Preferred such materials include polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), including its homopolymer (e.g., substantially only including vinyl alcohol and vinyl acetate monomer units) and its copolymer (e.g., in addition to vinyl alcohol and vinyl acetate units, also including one or more other monomer units). PVOH is a synthetic resin typically prepared by alcoholysis (commonly referred to as hydrolysis or saponification) of polyvinyl acetate. Fully hydrolyzed PVOH (wherein nearly all acetate groups are converted to alcohol groups) is a strongly hydrogen-bonded, highly crystalline polymer that dissolves only in hot water—higher than about 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius). If a sufficient number of acetate groups are allowed to remain after polyvinyl acetate hydrolysis, the PVOH polymer is referred to as partially hydrolyzed, which is weaker hydrogen-bonded and less crystalline, and soluble in cold water—lower than about 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius). Moderately cold or hot water soluble films may include, for example, moderately partially hydrolyzed PVOH (e.g., having a degree of hydrolysis of about 94% to about 98%) and only readily soluble in warm water, e.g., rapidly dissolving at temperatures of about 40 degrees C or above. Fully hydrolyzed and partially hydrolyzed PVOH types are often referred to as PVOH homopolymers, although partially hydrolyzed types are technically vinyl alcohol-vinyl acetate copolymers.

[0081] The degree of hydrolysis (DH) of the PVOH polymers and PVOH copolymers included in the water-soluble films of the present disclosure may be in the range of about 75% to about 99% (e.g., about 79% to about 92%, about 86.5% to about 89%, or about 88%, for example, for cold water soluble compositions; about 90% to about 99%, about 92% to about 99%, or about 95% to about 99%). As the degree of hydrolysis decreases, the mechanical strength of the film made from the resin decreases, but it dissolves faster at temperatures below about 20 degrees Celsius. As the degree of hydrolysis increases, the mechanical strength of the film made from the resin decreases, but it dissolves faster at temperatures below about 20 degrees Celsius. As the degree of hydrolysis increases, the film made from the polymer is mechanically stronger, and thermoformability tends to decrease. The degree of hydrolysis of PVOH can be selected so that the water solubility of the polymer is temperature-dependent, so the solubility of the film made from the polymer, any compatibilizer polymers, and additional ingredients is also affected. In one selection, the film is cold water soluble. Cold water soluble films, soluble in water at a temperature below 10 degrees Celsius, may include PVOH having a degree of hydrolysis in the range of about 75% to about 90%, or in the range of about 80% to about 90%, or in the range of about 85% to about 90%. In another alternative, the film is hot water soluble. Hot water soluble films, soluble in water at a temperature of at least about 60 degrees Celsius, may include PVOH having a degree of hydrolysis of at least about 98%.

[0082] In addition to PVOH polymers and PVOH copolymers, other water-soluble polymers used in the blend may include but are not limited to modified polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylates, water-soluble acrylate copolymers, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyethylene imine, pullulan, water-soluble natural polymers (including but not limited to guar gum, gum arabic, xanthan gum, carrageenan and starch), water-soluble polymer derivatives (including but not limited to modified starch, ethoxylated starch and hydroxypropylated starch), copolymers of the above materials and combinations of any of the above materials. However, other water-soluble polymers may include polyalkylene oxides, polyacrylamide, polyacrylic acid and its salts, cellulose, cellulose ether, cellulose ester, cellulose amide, polyvinyl acetate, polycarboxylic acids and its salts, polyamino acids, polyamides, gelatin, methylcellulose, carboxymethylcellulose and its salts, dextrin, ethylcellulose, hydroxyethylcellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, maltodextrin and polymethacrylate. Such water-soluble polymers, whether PVOH or other, can be obtained from a variety of sources. Any of the above-mentioned water-soluble polymers are generally suitable for use as film-forming polymers. Typically, water-soluble films may include copolymers and / or blends of the aforementioned resins.

[0083] For example, a water-soluble polymer (e.g., a PVOH resin blend alone or in combination with other water-soluble polymers) can be included in the film in an amount ranging from about 30% by weight or 50% by weight to about 90% by weight or 95% by weight. For example, the weight ratio of the amount of all water-soluble polymers can be in the range of about 0.5 to about 18, about 0.5 to about 15, about 0.5 to about 9, about 0.5 to about 5, about 1 to 3, or about 1 to 2 compared to the combined amount of all plasticizers, compatibilizers, and auxiliary additives. The specific amount of plasticizers and other non-polymer components can be selected in a specific embodiment based on the intended application of the water-soluble film to adjust the film flexibility and give processing benefits considering the desired mechanical film properties.

[0084] For example, the water-soluble polymers used in the films described herein (including but not limited to PVOH polymers and PVOH copolymers) can be characterized by a viscosity in the range of about 3.0 to about 27.0 cP, about 4.0 to about 24.0 cP, about 4.0 to about 23.0 cP, about 4.0 cP to about 15 cP, or about 6.0 to about 10.0 cP. The viscosity of the polymer is determined by measuring a freshly prepared solution using a Brookfield LV viscometer with a UL adapter as described in Appendix E Brookfield test method of British standard EN ISO 15023-2:2006. International practice specifies the viscosity of a 4% aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol at 20 degrees Celsius. Unless otherwise specified, the polymer viscosity expressed in cP herein should be understood to refer to the viscosity of a 4% aqueous solution of a water-soluble polymer at 20 degrees Celsius.

[0085] It is well known in the art that the viscosity of a water-soluble polymer (PVOH or other) is correlated to the weight average molecular weight (W) of the same polymer, and viscosity is often used as a substitute for Mw. Thus, the weight average molecular weight of the water-soluble polymer (including the first PVOH copolymer and the second PVOH polymer) can be, for example, in the range of about 30,000 to about 175,000, or about 30,000 to about 100,000, or about 55,000 to about 80,000.

[0086] The water-soluble film may contain other auxiliary agents and processing agents, such as, but not limited to, plasticizers, plasticizer extenders, surfactants, lubricants, mold release agents, fillers, extenders, crosslinking agents, anti-caking agents, antioxidants, detackifiers, defoamers, nanoparticles such as layered silicate nanoclays (e.g., sodium montmorillonite), bleaching agents (e.g., sodium metabisulfite, sodium bisulfite or others), aversive agents such as bittering agents (e.g., denatonium salts, such as denatonium benzoate, denatonium saccharin and denatonium chloride; sucrose octaacetate; quinine; flavonoids such as quercetin and naringenin; and quasinoids such as quasin and strychnine) and pungent agents (e.g., capsaicin, piperine, allyl isothiocyanate and resinferatoxin) and other functional ingredients, in amounts suitable for their intended purposes. An embodiment including a plasticizer is preferred. The amount of such agents, alone or collectively, may be up to about 50%, 20%, 15%, 10%, 5%, 4% and / or at least 0.01%, 0.1%, 1% or 5% by weight.

[0087] Plasticizers may include, but are not limited to, glycerol, diglycerol, sorbitol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol of up to 400 MW, neopentyl glycol, trimethylolpropane, polyether polyols, sorbitol, 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol, ethanolamine, and mixtures thereof. Preferred plasticizers are glycerol, sorbitol, triethylene glycol, propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol, trimethylolpropane, or combinations thereof. The total amount of plasticizer may be in the range of about 10% by weight to about 40% by weight, or about 15% by weight to about 35% by weight, or about 20% by weight to about 30% by weight, such as about 25% by weight, based on the total film weight. A combination of glycerol, dipropylene glycol, and sorbitol may be used. Optionally, the amount of glycerol may be in the range of about 5% by weight to about 30% by weight, or 5% by weight to about 20% by weight, such as about 13% by weight.

[0088] Optionally, the consumption of dipropylene glycol can be from about 1% weight to about 20% weight, or from about 3% weight to about 10% weight, for example 6% weight.Optionally, the consumption of sorbitol can be from about 1% weight to about 20% weight, or from about 2% weight to about 10% weight, for example, about 5% weight. The specific amount of plasticizer can be selected in specific embodiments according to the required film flexibility and processability characteristics of water-soluble film.Under low plasticizer levels, film may become fragile, difficult to process, or easily break.Under high plasticizer levels, film may be too soft, too weak or difficult to process for desired purposes.

[0089] In a preferred embodiment, the composition comprises a taste aversive such as denatonium benzoate and / or a stimulant such as capsaicin.

[0090] Preferably, the composition is a unit dose composition of 4 to 12 ml and is contained in a water soluble sachet as described above.

[0091] Optional components

[0092] In addition to the non-soap anionic and / or nonionic detersive surfactants described above, the composition may also contain one or more co-surfactants (eg, amphoteric (zwitterionic) and / or cationic surfactants).

[0093] Specific cationic surfactants include C8 to C 18 Alkyl dimethyl ammonium halides and derivatives thereof wherein one or two hydroxyethyl groups replace one or two methyl groups, and mixtures thereof. When included, cationic surfactants may be present in an amount ranging from 0.1 to 5% (by weight based on the total weight of the premix composition).

The term "alkyl" is used to include the alkyl portion of higher acyl groups. When included, the amphoteric (zwitterionic) surfactant may be present in an amount of 0.1 to 5% (by weight based on the total weight of the composition).

[0095] The composition may also include one or more chelating agents for transition metal ions. Such chelating agents may also have calcium and magnesium chelating capabilities, but preferentially bind heavy metal ions such as iron, manganese and copper. Such chelating agents help to improve the stability of the composition and prevent, for example, certain ingredients from being catalyzed by transition metal decomposition.

[0096] Suitable transition metal ion chelators include phosphonic acids in acid and / or salt form. When used in the form of salts, alkali metals (such as sodium and potassium) or alkanolammonium salts are preferred. Specific examples of such materials include aminotri(methylenephosphonic acid) (ATMP), 1-hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid (HEDP) and diethylenetriamine penta(methylenephosphonic acid) (DTPMP) and their corresponding sodium or potassium salts. HEDP is preferred. Mixtures of any of the above materials may also be used.

[0097] When included, the transition metal ion chelating agent may be present in an amount ranging from about 0.1 to about 10%, preferably from about 0.1 to about 3%, by weight based on the total weight of the composition. Mixtures of any of the above materials may also be used.

[0098] The composition may further comprise an effective amount of one or more enzymes selected from the group consisting of pectate lyases, proteases, amylases, cellulases, lipases, mannanases and mixtures thereof. The enzymes are preferably present together with corresponding enzyme stabilizers.

[0099] The composition may contain additional optional ingredients to improve performance and / or consumer acceptance. Examples of such ingredients include foam control agents, preservatives (such as bactericides), fluorescent agents and pearlescent agents. Each of these ingredients is present in an amount effective to achieve its purpose. Typically, these optional ingredients are individually included in an amount of up to 5% (by weight based on the total weight of the composition).
