Description

Technical Field

[0001] Examples of the present disclosure generally relate to fire suppression paper dispensing systems and methods within a lavatory, galley, or the like in an interior cabin of a vehicle. Background Art

[0002] Commercial aircraft are used to transport passengers between various locations. A typical commercial aircraft includes one or more lavatories, one or more galleys, etc. within the interior cabin.

[0003] Paper dispensers can be located throughout the interior cabin of an aircraft. For example, a lavatory within an interior cabin includes a toilet paper dispenser and a hand towel dispenser. As another example, a galley within an interior cabin includes a hand towel dispenser.

[0004] Some paper towel dispensers contain one or more relatively large paper towel rolls of paper that provide a large amount of potential fuel to propagate a fire, which is a consideration when such dispensers are installed on aircraft in order to meet stringent fire protection requirements for aircraft certification, such as those promulgated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In a potential scenario, an individual with malicious intent could ignite the exposed bottom edge of a dispensed paper towel, and the fire could then burn upward to one or more paper towel rolls, thereby igniting the paper towel rolls and creating a hazardous condition. Summary of the invention

[0005] There is a need for a system and method for effectively and efficiently suppressing a fire within a paper dispenser. In addition, there is a need for a fire suppression paper dispensing system that meets the various fire protection requirements within a commercial aircraft.

[0006] In view of these needs, certain examples of the present disclosure provide a paper dispensing system, the paper dispensing system including one or more shells, the one or more shells defining an internal chamber, the internal chamber configured to hold a reel of wound paper. The one or more shells include an inner surface and an opening, and the edge of the wound paper can be dispensed through the opening. An intumescent material is coupled to the one or more shells. The intumescent material is configured to expand in response to exposure to a predetermined temperature to fill and enclose an open area including an opening within the one or more shells.

[0007] In at least one example, the intumescent material covers at least a portion of the inner surface. In at least one other example, the intumescent material covers the entire inner surface.

[0008] The paper dispensing system can be arranged in the interior cabin of the vehicle. For example, the paper dispensing system can be located in a washroom or a kitchen of the interior cabin.

[0009] The roll paper can be configured to be manually dispensed. Alternatively, the roll paper can be configured to be automatically dispensed.

[0010] The one or more housings can include a base, one or more walls extending from the base, and a door movably coupled to the one or more walls. The door can move between a closed position and an open position. The expandable material is coupled to the base, the one or more walls, and the door.

[0011] In at least one example, the intumescent material coats an inner surface of one or more shells. In at least one example, the one or more shells are integrally formed with the intumescent material.

[0012] The one or more housings can include two or more housings. The paper dispensing system can also include a cabinet. The two or more housings can be disposed within the cabinet.

[0013] Certain examples of the present disclosure provide a vehicle including an interior compartment and a paper dispensing system disposed within the interior compartment, as described herein.

[0022] When reading in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, the above overview and the following detailed description of certain embodiments will be better understood. As used herein, elements or steps stated in singular form and preceded by the word "one" or "a kind of" should be understood to not necessarily exclude multiple elements or steps. In addition, reference to "an embodiment" is not intended to be interpreted as excluding the existence of additional embodiments that also combine the features. In addition, unless explicitly stated to the contrary, an embodiment that "includes" or "has" an element or multiple elements with a specific condition can include additional elements that do not have the condition.

[0023] Certain examples of the present disclosure provide a paper dispensing system configured to suppress a fire therein. The paper dispensing system is configured to suppress a fire in a scenario where an individual attempts to maliciously ignite the bottom edge of the dispensed paper. In such a scenario, heat from the initial fire activates an intumescent coating within the paper dispensing system. The intumescent coating chars, expands, and swells to close off air gaps, thereby self-extinguishing any fire due to a lack of oxygen within the paper dispensing system.

[0024] Figure 1 A perspective front view of an aircraft 10 according to an example of the present disclosure is shown. The aircraft 10 includes a propulsion system 12, which includes, for example, engines 14. Optionally, the propulsion system 12 may include more engines 14 than shown. The engines 14 are carried by wings 16 of the aircraft 10. In other examples, the engines 14 may be carried by the fuselage 18 and / or the tail 20. The tail 20 may also support a horizontal stabilizer 22 and a vertical stabilizer 24. The fuselage 18 of the aircraft 10 defines an interior cabin 30, which includes a cockpit or cabin, one or more work sections (e.g., a galley, a personnel carry-on luggage area, etc.), one or more passenger sections (e.g., first class, business class, and regular seating areas), one or more lavatories, etc.

[0025] Alternatively, instead of aircraft, examples of the present disclosure may be used with various other vehicles, such as automobiles, buses, locomotive and train cars, cruise ships, ships, spacecraft, etc. In addition, examples of the present disclosure may be used with fixed structures, such as commercial and residential buildings and / or public restrooms.

[0026] Figure 2 1 shows a perspective interior view of a washroom 100 according to an example of the present disclosure. The washroom 100 is an example of an enclosure such as in Figure 11 and 2. The lavatory 100 is shown in the interior cabin of the aircraft 10 shown in FIG. The lavatory 100 may be on an aircraft, as described above. Alternatively, the lavatory 100 may be on various other vehicles. In other examples, the lavatory 100 may be in a fixed structure, such as a commercial or residential building. The lavatory 100 includes a base floor 101 that supports a toilet 102, a cabinet 104, and a wash basin 106 or a wash basin. The lavatory 100 may be arranged differently than shown. The lavatory 100 may include more or fewer components than shown.

[0027] The washroom 100 includes one or more paper dispensing systems 120. For example, the paper dispensing system 120 can be configured to dispense toilet paper. As another example, the paper dispensing system 200 can be configured to dispense paper towels, such as can be used to dry hands.

[0028] The paper dispensing system 120 can be manually operated, or automatically operated. For example, the paper dispensing system 120 can be configured to allow an individual to pull and grab paper from the paper dispensing system 120. As another example, the paper dispensing system 120 can include a sensor and an actuator, the sensor configured to detect a hand in close proximity, and the actuator configured to automatically dispense paper in response to the sensor detecting the hand, which is referred to as an on-demand mode. Alternatively, paper can be automatically dispensed in a predetermined length without a hand sensor, which is referred to as a hanging towel mode, in which the paper is dispensed immediately after the towel is torn off.

[0029] Figure 3 An isometric front view of a paper dispensing system 200 according to an example of the present disclosure is shown. The paper dispensing system 200 includes a housing 202 having: a base 204; side walls 206 extending upward from the base 204; a rear wall 208 extending upward from the base 204; and a door 210 movably secured to one or more of the rear wall 208 and / or the side walls 206. In at least one example, the door 210 is movably coupled to an upper edge of the rear wall and / or a top wall 212 via a hinge 211. The door 210 is configured to be in an open position (e.g., Figure 3 214 and 215. The interior chamber 213 is movable between a position (shown) and a closed position, in which the interior chamber 213 is exposed and in which the interior chamber 213 is closed.

[0030] Optionally, the housing 202 may not include a removable door. Alternatively, a passage can be formed in the housing 202 to allow insertion and removal of paper.

[0031] The housing 202 provides a housing that closely fits a spool 216 of paper 218. The housing 202 also includes an opening 217 formed in the base 204. The opening 217 allows a bottom edge 219 of the paper 218 to be fed therethrough.

[0032] Optionally, the housing 202 can include more or fewer walls. In addition, the housing 202 can include walls of a different shape than shown. As an example, a single curved outer wall can be connected to the base 204.

[0033] The housing 202 also includes one or more reel adapters 214 configured to be removably coupled to a reel 216 that winds up paper 218. The paper 218 is wound around the reel 216. The reel adapter 214 can be a pin, a post, a clip, a bump, a rod, a cylinder, etc. The reel adapter 214 can be spring biased.

[0034] The paper 218 can be, for example, toilet paper. As another example, the paper 218 can be a paper towel. As another example, the paper 218 can be a napkin.

[0035] The paper dispensing system 200 can be a manual system in which an individual grabs the bottom edge 219 of the paper and pulls it to remove a portion of the paper from the main winding body 220. As another example, the paper dispensing system 200 can be configured to automatically dispense paper 218. In such an example, the paper dispensing system 200 can include one or more sensors 222 configured to detect an object in a predetermined proximity area (such as within a distance of 6 inches or less). An actuator 224 (such as a rotary motor) can be operably coupled to the reel adapter 214. In operation, when one or more sensors 222 detect that an object (such as a hand) is present in the predetermined proximity area, the actuator 224 operates to unwind the main winding body 220 to automatically dispense paper therefrom, which is referred to as an on-demand mode. Alternatively, paper can be automatically dispensed in a predetermined length without a hand sensor, which is referred to as a hand towel delivery mode, in which the paper is dispensed immediately after the paper towel is torn off. Alternatively, the paper dispensing system 200 may not include the sensor 222 or the actuator 224 .

[0036] To suppress any fire that could potentially start from the paper 218 being ignited, the inner surface 228 of the housing 202 includes an intumescent material 230. For example, the inner surface 228 can be coated with the intumescent material 230. As another example, the inner surface 228 can be integrally formed with the intumescent material 230. As an example, each of the structural components of the housing 202 can be integrally formed with the intumescent material 230.

[0037] In at least one example, the entire inner surface 228 of the shell 202 within the internal chamber 213 includes an intumescent material 230. In particular, the inner surface 228 of each of the base 204, the sidewall 206, the rear wall 208, the door 210, etc. is coated with an intumescent material 230. The intumescent material 230 is configured to expand when exposed to a predetermined set temperature (such as 50-100 degrees Celsius or higher). If the temperature does not reach the predetermined temperature, the intumescent material 230 is inert. However, if the predetermined temperature is reached, the intumescent material 230 expands. When the intumescent material 230 expands, the expansion fills the open area (such as the internal void, gap, spacing, opening, etc. of the shell 202). Due to the lack of oxygen, any fire in the shell 202 is self-extinguishing.

[0038] In at least one example, the intumescent material 230 is a coating that is inert at low temperatures (such as below an activation threshold of 50-100 degrees Celsius) but reacts in response to increased heat (typically at temperatures of 50-100 degrees Celsius or higher). When the temperature increases, such as during a fire, the intumescent material 230 expands and forms a char layer covering the inner surface 228.

[0039] In at least one example, the housing 202 is formed of one or more metals, and the intumescent material 230 coats the inner surface 228 of the metal structure. In at least one example, the intumescent material 230 covers the entire inner surface 228 of the housing 202.

[0040] Figure 4 An internal side view of a paper dispensing system 200 during normal operation according to an example of the present disclosure is shown. As shown, a bottom edge 219 of paper 218 extends downwardly and outwardly through opening 217. Paper 218 is loaded within interior chamber 213 and can be dispensed outwardly from opening 217.

[0041] Figure 5 Shown is an interior side view of a paper dispensing system 200 when paper 218 is ignited according to an example of the present disclosure. The bottom edge 219 may be ignited by an individual with malicious intent. The subsequent flame 260 travels upward into the interior chamber 213, which may then ignite the wrapping paper 218, resulting in an increase in temperature.

[0042] Figure 6An interior side view of a paper dispensing system 200 is shown according to an example of the present disclosure wherein the intumescent material 230 is in an expanded state 270. When the temperature within the interior chamber 213 rises to a predetermined temperature, the intumescent material 230 expands, thereby filling all voids, holes, etc. within the housing 202. For example, the intumescent material 230 expands into and through the opening 217, thereby providing an airtight interior barrier 272 within the housing 202. The airtight interior barrier 272 prevents air from entering the interior chamber 213, thereby starving any fire of oxygen and extinguishing any flame within the interior chamber 213.

[0043] refer to Figures 1 to 6 , the paper dispensing system 200 includes a housing 202 that provides a fire resistant enclosure configured to hold a roll of wound paper 218 (or, alternatively, multiple rolls of wound paper 218). The housing 202 can be formed entirely or partially from one or more metals. An intumescent material 230 covers an inner surface 228 of the housing 202. When the door 210 is in the closed position, the housing 202 closely fits the parameters of one or more new paper towel rolls, thereby minimizing air gaps around the paper towel rolls while allowing sufficient clearance for the one or more paper towel rolls to unroll and dispense freely.

[0044] The intumescent material 230 may cover the entire inner surface 228 of the housing 202. Alternatively, the intumescent material 230 may not completely cover the entire inner surface 228.

[0045] The door 210 is configured to move between a closed position and an open position (such as via one or more hinges) to allow replacement of the paper 218. Similar to the base 204 and walls 206, 208, the inner surface 228 of the door 210 (i.e., the surface facing the interior chamber 213 when the door 210 is closed) is covered with an intumescent material 230. The housing 202 can also include a latch configured to securely close the door 210 in the closed position.

[0046] The paper dispensing system 200 can be used in various areas of the interior cabin of an aircraft, such as in a lavatory, a galley, a bar area, a crew rest area, a cockpit. Alternatively, the paper dispensing system 200 can be used in areas of various other types of vehicles, residential or commercial buildings, public lavatories, etc.

[0047] As described herein, the paper dispensing system 200 includes one or more housings, such as a housing 202 defining an interior chamber 213 configured to hold a reel 216 of a roll of paper 218. The housing includes an interior surface 228 and an opening 217 through which an edge (such as a bottom edge 219) of the roll of paper 218 is dispensed. An intumescent material 230 is coupled to the housing 202. The intumescent material 230 is configured to expand in response to exposure to a predetermined temperature to fill a void (such as the opening 217) within the housing 202. In at least one example, the intumescent material 230 covers at least a portion of the interior surface 228. In at least one other example, the intumescent material 230 covers the entire interior surface 228.

[0048] Figure 7 A front view of a paper dispensing system 200 according to an example of the present disclosure is shown. In this example, the paper dispensing system 200 includes a cabinet 300 having a body 301 and a door 302 movably coupled to the body 301, such as via one or more hinges 304. The door 302 is configured to pivot about a vertical axis 306 between an open position and a closed position.

[0049] The housing 202 is disposed within the cabinet 300. The housing 202 is configured to hold paper 218, as described above. The housing 202 can include a door 210 configured to pivot open about a vertical axis 308 that can be parallel to the vertical axis 306. An inner surface of the housing 202 includes an intumescent material 230, as described above. The paper dispensing system 200 can include more or fewer housings 202 than shown.
