[0029] The present disclosure relates generally to refrigerant compressors, and more particularly to a de-swirlizer at a discharge portion of a refrigerant compressor. It has been discovered that the systems and methods disclosed herein reduce the noise output of a refrigerant compressor.

[0030] Figure 1 A refrigerant cooling system 10 is schematically illustrated. The refrigerant system 10 includes a main refrigerant loop or circuit 12 in communication with a compressor or compressors 14, a condenser 13, an evaporator 15, and an expansion device 17. This refrigerant system 10 may be used, for example, in a chiller or a heat pump. Although a specific example of a refrigerant system 10 is shown, the present disclosure may be extended to other refrigerant system configurations. For example, the main refrigerant loop 12 may include an economizer downstream of the condenser 13 and upstream of the expansion device 17. The refrigerant cooling system 10 may be, for example, an air conditioning system.

[0031] Figure 2 An example compressor 14 is shown including a discharge section 20 where the refrigerant leaves the compressor 14 and then flows to the condenser 13 (see FIG. Figure 1 ). The example discharge portion 20 is where the refrigerant exits the compressor 14, rather than between compressor stages. Although an example compressor 14 is shown, other types of compressors may benefit from the present disclosure.

[0032] Figure 3 An example de-vortexer 22 is illustrated, which may be fluidly disposed in region A ( ) between the compressor 14 and the condenser 13. Figure 1 ). In some examples, the de-vortexer 22 may be attached to the discharge portion 20 ( Figure 2 ). The example de-vortexer 22 includes a hollow cylinder 24 having a central axis 28 and an inner diameter surface 26. A plurality of circumferentially spaced vanes 30 extend radially inwardly from the inner diameter surface 26 toward the central axis 28. The discharge flow from the compressor 14 enters the de-vortexer 22 with residual swirl from the input rotational energy generated by the compressor impeller (not shown).

[0033] As the flow enters the de-vortexer 22 from the compressor 14, it is oriented by the guide vanes 30, which orient the flow and improve it into a more uniform flow without oscillating patterns. The stable orientation of the discharge flow from the de-vortexer 22 results in a reduction in the overall noise output from the compressor 14, since most of the compressor output noise comes from the aforementioned oscillating flow patterns, which come from the compressor discharge section 20.

[0034] In some examples, as shown, one base 40 of the cylinder 24 is attached to the discharge portion 20, and an opposing base 42 of the cylinder 24 provides the refrigerant output of the de-vortexer 22. That is, the refrigerant flows through the example de-vortexer 22 within the inner diameter surface 26 and past the vanes 30 in a direction from the base 40 to the base 42.

[0035] In some examples, as shown, the axial width 32 of each of the blades 30 from the leading edge 44 to the trailing edge 46 tapers as it extends radially inward. In some examples, the taper is linear. In some examples, as shown, each of the plurality of blades tapers to a tip 34, and each tip 34 is self-supporting. That is, in some examples, each tip 34 is not connected, connected, or mounted or attached to anything. An axially extending opening along the central axis 28 is formed radially inward of each example tip 34, and each tip 34 is not circumferentially connected to each other.

[0036] Although seven blades 30 are shown in the example, more or fewer blades 30 may be used, including odd and even numbers. Figure 5 As shown in the example in Figure 3 , the example compressor 14 includes an impeller 50 including a plurality of impeller blades 52. In some examples, the number of blades 30 is different from the number of impeller blades 52 because applicants have found that having the same number of blades 30 and impeller blades 52 results in similar harmonic frequencies between them and causes resonance, which may increase noise rather than dampen it. Other impeller types and configurations may be used and may benefit from the present disclosure.

[0037] Figure 4 2 shows a cross-sectional view of an example devortexer 22. In some examples, the circumferential thickness 36 of each vane 30 tapers as it extends radially inward. In some examples, the taper is linear. In some examples, as shown, at any given radial position, the axial thickness 32 ( Figure 3 ) is greater than the circumferential thickness 36 of the blade 30.

[0038] In some examples, as shown, the vanes 30 are oriented substantially parallel to the central axis 28. In some examples, as shown, the vanes 30 are oriented parallel to the incoming flow body at the discharge 20 of the compressor 14.

[0039] In some examples, such as Figure 3 As shown in FIG. , the blades 30 extend from their respective leading edges 44 to their respective trailing edges 46 in a direction generally parallel (±5°) to the central axis 28 .

[0040] In some examples, such as Figure 4 As shown in , each blade 30 is planar symmetrical across a plane 38, and central axis 28 lies in plane 38. In some examples, as shown, a surface of blade 30 includes a curvature.

[0041] A method may be said to include fluidly disposing a devortexer between a discharge portion of a compressor and a condenser, the devortexer comprising a hollow cylinder including an inner diameter surface and a central axis, and a plurality of vanes extending radially inwardly from the inner diameter surface toward the central axis.

[0042] A refrigeration compressor may be said to include a discharge portion and a de-vortexer at the discharge portion. The de-vortexer includes a hollow cylinder including an inner diameter surface and a central axis, and a plurality of blades extending radially inwardly from the inner diameter surface toward the central axis.

[0043] Terms such as "generally," "substantially," and "approximately" are not open-ended terms and should be interpreted consistently with the manner in which those skilled in the art would interpret such terms.

[0044] The foregoing description should be interpreted as illustrative. Those of ordinary skill in the art will appreciate that certain modifications may fall within the scope of the present disclosure. Various examples of the present disclosure have been described. Any combination of the described systems, operations, or functions is contemplated. It is possible to use some components or features from any of these examples in combination with features or components from any of the other examples. For these reasons, the following claims should be studied to determine the true scope and content of the present disclosure.
