[0098] Surfactants

[0099] Surfactants are surface-active compounds. They usually have a polar head group and a non-polar hydrocarbon chain. The polar part of the molecule can interact with polar solvents such as water, so it is also called the hydrophilic part. On the other hand, the non-polar part can interact with non-polar solvents such as oils, so it is also called the lipophilic or hydrophobic part. There are four basic types of surfactants: anionic surfactants, cationic surfactants, zwitterionic surfactants and non-ionic surfactants.

[0100] Surfactants are amphiphilic molecules that are widely used in consumer products, industrial processes, and biological applications. A key property of surfactants is the critical micelle concentration (CMC), which is the concentration at which surfactant molecules begin to aggregate into clusters. Micelles consist of agglomerates of surfactant molecules in a liquid and promote washing by storing hydrophobic substances (fats, oils, etc.) in the agglomerates. The CMC value is defined as the concentration of surfactant above which micelles begin to form and the surface tension of the formulation remains relatively constant. The CMC value represents the amount of surfactant required to achieve the maximum surface tension reduction. The lower the CMC value, the less surfactant is required to effectively emulsify, dissolve, and disperse the hydrophobic substances in the formulation. Among the classes of surfactants (nonionic, anionic, cationic, and amphoteric surfactants), the lowest CMC is usually found in the nonionic class. In general, nonionic surfactants with very low CMC values can provide excellent wetting and detergency benefits. Therefore, the CMC value measures the efficiency of the surfactant, and surfactants with lower CMC values will show the desired benefits when used in consumer products, industrial processes, and biological applications.

[0101] These CMC values of surfactant solutions can be determined by measuring the surface tension at different concentrations. CMC values can be calculated by different known techniques (e.g., tensiometric measurements, conductivity measurements, fluorescence spectroscopy). In some embodiments, the combination of the PEFA surfactant described herein with another surfactant (surfactant combination) may have a CMC value of about 0.1 mM or less; in some embodiments, the CMC value is about 0.07 mM or less; in some embodiments, the CMC value is about 0.05 mM or less; in some embodiments, the CMC value is about 0.04 mM or less; in some embodiments, the CMC value is about 0.03 mM or less. In some embodiments, such surfactant combinations may have a CMC value of about 0.01 mM to about 0.1 mM; and in some embodiments, the CMC value is about 0.01 mM to about 0.05 mM. In certain surfactant combinations, the presence of the PEFA compound described herein and the second surfactant can significantly reduce the amount of the second surfactant (e.g., sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) required to achieve the desired surface tension. For example, by adding PEFA surfactants as described herein, the amount of SDS and / or sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) required to achieve a desired surface tension of a formulation can be reduced by more than 10 times, more than 50 times, or more than 100 times, making the surfactant mixture more beneficial and effective.

[0102] The surfactant may contain one or more PEFA compounds. In some embodiments, the surfactant may have pentitol polyol esters of fatty acids and hexitol polyol esters of fatty acids. In some embodiments, the C16 and C18 fatty acid components of the pentitol polyol esters and hexitol polyol esters may account for about 20% to about 99% of the PEFA; and in some embodiments, about 30% to about 95% of the PEFA; and in some embodiments, about 40% to about 90% of the PEFA. In some embodiments, the C16 and C18 fatty acid components of the pentitol polyol esters and hexitol polyol esters may account for about 50% or more of the PEFA; in some embodiments, about 60% or more of the PEFA; and in some embodiments, about 70% or more of the PEFA; and in some embodiments, about 80% or more of the PEFA. In some embodiments, the ratio of pentitol polyol esters to hexitol polyol esters in the surfactant is about 5:1 or greater; in some embodiments, the ratio is about 8:1 or greater; in some embodiments, the ratio is about 10:1 or greater; in some embodiments, the ratio is about 15:1 or greater; in some embodiments, the ratio is about 20:1 or greater; in some embodiments, the ratio is about 30:1 or greater; in some embodiments, the ratio is about 40:1 or greater; in some embodiments, the ratio is about 50:1 or greater.

[0103] Surfactants as described herein can have a wide range of applications. For example, such surfactants can be included in personal care compositions. Some examples of such personal care compositions include skin moisturizers, perfumes, lipsticks, nail polishes, eye and facial makeup preparations, shampoos, perms, hair dyes, toothpastes, and deodorants. Surfactants can be used in cleaning compositions. Some examples of such cleaning compositions include hard surface cleaners, all-purpose cleaners, bleaches, detergents, and disinfectants. Surfactants as described herein will be applicable to any personal care composition or cleaning composition requiring an effective surfactant.

[0104] Example

[0105] For surfactant mixtures at different ratios, the CMC values of water-soluble surfactants were measured. The CMC values were calculated using known techniques using a plot of surface tension versus the logarithm of different surfactant concentrations. The measured CMC values for a combination of PEFA and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) at a ratio of 60:40 (weight:weight), other nonionic surfactants and PEFA at the same ratios are shown in Table 1. Figure 1 and Figure 2 Representative CMC measurements obtained for surfactants containing SDS and PEFA in the indicated weight ratios are shown. Figure 2As shown, the surfactant combination of SDS and PEFA at a ratio of 60:40 has the lowest CMC value (0.031 mM) compared to all other reference non-ionic surfactants. Table 1 discloses that the CMC values of pure SDS and pure SDBS are 8.2 mM and 2.5 mM, respectively. In addition, unlike cetearyl glucoside, PEFA is soluble in SDBS at 60:40. Table 1 also discloses that a mixture of SDBS and PEFA at a ratio of 60:40 was measured and its CMC value was 0.22 mM, which is an order of magnitude lower than all other reference surfactants. Since cetearyl glucoside is insoluble in SDBS, the CMC value of the surfactant combination of SDBS and cetearyl glucoside at 80:20 could not be measured. Therefore, since the combination of ionic surfactants such as SDS and SDBS with PEFA has a low CMC value, the combination of PEFA compounds with other ionic surfactants has a high efficiency.
