Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present invention relates to a two-piece injection molded shoe system and its applications, including a multifunctional shoe system. Background Art
[0002] Traditionally, shoes were limited to specific uses. For example, a runner could use running shoes; a hiker could use hiking boots; an office worker could use loafers or high heels; and a person on vacation could use flip-flops. Because shoes were traditionally limited to specific uses, people who wanted to do different activities needed to own multiple different shoes for each of those activities. This had a large limiting effect on consumers and was costly for them.
[0003] Traditionally, shoes have been made of different materials depending on these different applications. For certain applications, the shoe must be made of a material that gives the shoe specific qualities that are necessary or desirable for the given application. For example, first responders may find themselves in a variety of potentially dangerous conditions, so shoes with oil-resistant or non-slip soles are necessary or desirable. Therefore, first responders may have, for example, closed-toe shoes with oil-resistant, non-slip soles. However, first responders have traditionally been limited to wearing such closed-toe shoes and cannot easily switch to more comfortable shoes, such as flip-flops or backless sandals, because such casual shoes do not have oil-resistant, non-slip soles. Therefore, even during downtime, first responders must wear closed-toe shoes with oil-resistant, non-slip soles, which is very restrictive and undesirable for them.
[0004] Even for consumers who do not need shoes for specific purposes, traditional shoes have great limitations. For example, in order to own a pair of Crocs, a pair of sneakers, a pair of flip-flops, and a pair of backless sandals, consumers traditionally need to own four separate pairs of shoes. This often requires purchasing four complete pairs of shoes from four different companies, which is cumbersome, expensive, and time-consuming for consumers. Summary of the invention

[0028] Embodiments described herein provide a two-piece shoe system, particularly a two-piece injection-molded shoe system having interchangeable uppers or outsoles, thereby enabling a user to wear multiple types of uppers in one shoe system.
[0029] Figure 1A-1E A shoe of a two-piece injection molded shoe system 100 according to an embodiment of the present invention is shown, wherein a first shoe portion 101 and a second shoe portion 105 are securely, semi-permanently, and removably connected to each other via a plug 104 extending from the first shoe portion 101, the plug 104 being received in a corresponding aperture 106 formed in the second shoe portion 105. Figure 1A-1E Only one shoe is shown in the figure, but it should be understood that the system 100 is generally composed of two shoes, one for the left foot and one for the right foot, and the two shoes are mirror images of each other, which is the standard for a pair of shoes.
[0030] Figure 2A-2EA two-piece injection molded shoe system 200 is shown in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, wherein the first shoe portion 101 and the second shoe portion 105 are disconnected by removing the plug 104 from the aperture 106. This connection allows for interchangeability between the first shoe portion and the second shoe portion using a person's hand, but does not allow for interchangeability when only a person's foot is used or when only walking in the two-piece shoe system 100. In this manner, the first shoe portion 101 and the second shoe portion 105 do not separate when the user is wearing or using the shoe system 100. Although in Figure 2A-2E Only one shoe is shown in the figure, but it should be understood that the system will typically consist of two shoes, one for the left foot and one for the right foot, which are mirror images of each other, as is standard for a pair of shoes.
[0031] The shoe system 200 includes a first shoe portion 101 having an upper portion 102 and an insole portion 103. The upper portion 102 is configured to be worn substantially over and around the sides and top of the wearer's foot, while the insole portion 103 is configured to be worn substantially under the wearer's foot. The upper portion 102 and the insole portion 103 can be formed as a single injection molded part. In one embodiment, the upper portion 102 and the insole portion 103 are formed as a single injection molded part by ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam, which is a soft and durable polymer that is lightweight and has cushioning properties. Alternatively, other materials can be used. In another embodiment, the upper portion 102 and the insole portion 103 can be formed as separate pieces that are combined in any conventional manner.
[0032] like Figure 1A-1E As shown, upper portion 102 may be a type of Croc with a heel strap. However, upper portion 102 may be any type of shoe. For example, upper portion 102 may be a type of Croc without a heel strap, a mule, a slip-on, a sneaker, a closed-toe shoe, a slide, a flip-flop, a boot, or any other type of shoe.
[0033] The shoe system 100 also includes a second shoe portion 105. The second shoe portion 105 is configured to fit substantially below the insole portion 103 of the first shoe portion 101, with its side allowing the insole portion 103 of the first shoe portion 101 to be received within the second shoe portion 105. The second shoe portion 105 can be formed as a single injection molded piece. In one embodiment, the second shoe portion is formed as a single injection molded piece from EVA foam. Alternatively, other materials can be used. In another embodiment, the second shoe portion 105 can be formed as a plurality of pieces joined by any conventional means, for example, as an outsole having an additional sole attached thereto.
[0034] In one embodiment, the second shoe portion 105 includes a tread portion 107 (see FIG. 1 ) located on the bottom side of the second shoe portion 105. Figure 1F 105 ). Tread portion 107 may be a separate piece that is joined to second shoe portion 105 by any conventional means, such as by gluing tread portion 107 to the underside of second shoe portion 105. Alternatively, second shoe portion 105 and tread portion 107 may be formed as a single injection molded piece from EVA foam. Tread portion 107 may be sized to be smaller than the underside of second shoe portion 105 such that a portion of the underside of second shoe portion 105 remains exposed. Alternatively, tread portion 107 may be sized to have substantially the same size and shape as the underside of second shoe portion 105.
[0035] In one embodiment, tread portion 107 includes a tread pattern that is configured to provide second shoe portion 105 with desired properties for a given situation or use. For example, the tread pattern can be configured to make second shoe portion 105 oil resistant and / or slip resistant. In another embodiment, the tread pattern can be configured to make second shoe portion 105 ideal for hiking or similar applications. In another embodiment, in addition to or as an alternative to the tread pattern itself being configured to make the second shoe portion oil resistant and / or slip resistant, the bottom side of second shoe portion 105 can be made of a material that makes the bottom side oil resistant and / or slip resistant.
[0036] In one embodiment, if Figure 2B-2F As shown, the first shoe portion 101 includes one or more plugs 104 configured to be received in one or more apertures 106 in the second shoe portion 105, as shown in FIG. Figure 1A-Figure 1D As shown. In one embodiment, one or more apertures 106 of the second shoe portion 105 are sized to receive one or more plugs 104 of the first shoe portion. In one embodiment, one or more plugs 104 are sized so that they extend substantially completely through one or more apertures 106 in the second shoe portion 105. In this way, by receiving one or more plugs 104 of the first shoe portion 101 in the corresponding one or more apertures 106 of the second shoe portion 105, the first shoe portion 101 and the second shoe portion 105 can be securely, semi-permanently, and removably connected to each other. By extending substantially completely through the corresponding apertures 106, the plugs 104 provide a secure, semi-permanent, and removable attachment, and enable the shoe system 101 to have a contrasting design when the first shoe portion 101 and the second shoe portion 105 are different colors, patterns, or textures.
[0037] like Figure 2B-2FAs shown in the embodiment of the present invention, the first shoe portion 101 may include one or more plugs 104 ( Figure 2B ), one or more plugs 104 extending substantially laterally from the medial side of the first shoe portion 101 ( Figure 2C ), one or more plugs 104 extending substantially laterally from the front side (toe area) of the first shoe portion 101 ( Figure 2D ) and one or more plugs ( Figure 2E ). In this manner, the plurality of plugs 104 extend substantially laterally from all sides of the first shoe portion 101.
[0038] exist Figure 2B-2F In the illustrated embodiment, four plugs 104 extend substantially laterally from the outside of the first shoe portion 101 ( Figure 2B ), four plugs 104 extend substantially laterally from the inner side of the first shoe portion 101 ( Figure 2C ), two plugs 104 extend substantially laterally from the front side (toe region) of the first shoe portion 101 ( Figure 2D ), two plugs 104 extend substantially laterally from the rear side (heel area) of the first shoe portion 101 ( Figure 2E Correspondingly, four apertures 106 are formed on the outer side of the second shoe portion 105 ( Figure 2B ), four apertures 106 are formed on the inner side of the second shoe portion 105 ( Figure 2C ), two apertures 106 are formed on the front side (toe area) of the second shoe portion 105 ( Figure 2D ), two apertures 106 are formed on the rear side (heel area) of the second shoe portion 105 ( Figure 2E ). In this way, the plug 104 extends substantially laterally from all sides of the first shoe portion 101 and has a corresponding aperture 106 in the second shoe portion 105, so that when the first shoe portion 101 and the second shoe portion 105 are connected via the plug 104 received in its corresponding aperture 106, a secure, semi-permanent, removable connection between the first shoe portion 101 and the second shoe portion 105 can be achieved. Other numbers, configurations, and arrangements of the plugs 104 and corresponding apertures 106 can be used to achieve a secure, semi-permanent, removable connection between the two shoe portions. This connection allows for interchangeability between the first shoe portion and the second shoe portion using a human hand, but does not allow for it when only using a human foot or only walking in a two-piece shoe system 101. In this way, the first shoe portion 101 and the second shoe portion 105 do not separate when the user is wearing or using the shoe system 100.
[0039] In one embodiment, one or more plugs 104 extending laterally from the sides of the first shoe portion 101 are substantially parallelogram-shaped, and one or more apertures 106 in the second shoe portion 105 are also substantially parallelogram-shaped and sized to receive the plugs 104. However, any combination and type of shapes may be used for the plugs and corresponding apertures, such as, but not limited to, triangles, rectangles, parallelograms, circles, squares, diamonds, ellipses, pentagons, hexagons, heptagons, octagons, etc. These and other shapes may also be used to create different contrasting designs when the first shoe portion 101 and the second shoe portion 105 have different colors, patterns, or textures. For example, the plugs 104 and corresponding apertures 106 may be substantially star-shaped, thereby forming a contrasting star-shaped design; heart-shaped, thereby forming a contrasting heart-shaped design; or any other conceivable shape that still allows the plugs 104 and apertures 106 to be used to securely, semi-permanently, and removably connect the two shoe portions.
[0040] Steering Figure 3 , which shows an embodiment of a multifunctional shoe system 300. Figure 3 304 to illustrate a secure, semi-permanent, removable connection between each shoe portion, but in one embodiment, the multifunctional shoe system 300 includes only one second shoe portion 305, which is configured to be securely, semi-permanently, removably connected to multiple first shoe portions 301, 302, 303, 304. In this way, multiple first shoe portions 301, 302, 303, 304 are interchangeable with a single second shoe portion. Therefore, with a single multifunctional shoe system 300, a user can obtain and wear multiple types of shoes with interchangeable first shoe portions 301, 302, 303, 304 and only one second shoe portion 305.
[0041] exist Figure 3In the illustrated embodiment of the multifunctional shoe system 300, the system 300 includes a first shoe portion 301 of the type of a Clog with a heel strap, a first shoe portion 302 of the type of a loafer, a first shoe portion 303 of the type of a flip-flop, and a first shoe portion 304 of the type of a sandal. However, the first shoe portions 301, 302, 303, 304 may be any other combination of shoe types (Clogs without heel straps, slip-ons, mules, sneakers, closed-toe shoes, slides, flip-flops, boots, or any other type of shoe); may all be the same shoe type but of different colors, textures, or patterns; may be different shoe types of the same color, texture, or pattern; or any other combination of types, colors, textures, or patterns. In an embodiment, the multifunctional shoe system 300 may include fewer first shoe portions, for example, may include only two or three first shoe portions. In another embodiment, the multifunctional shoe system 300 may include more first shoe parts, for example, five or more first shoe parts. In another embodiment, the multifunctional shoe system 300 may include more than one second shoe part.
[0042] First shoe portions 301, 302, 303, and 304 each include one or more plugs 104 extending therefrom. In an embodiment, one or more plugs 104 extend substantially laterally from one or more sides of each of first shoe portions 301, 302, 303, 304.

The upper portions 301a, 302a, 303a, 304a are each configured to be worn substantially over and around the sides and top of the wearer's foot, and the insole portions 301b, 302b, 303b, 304b are each configured to be worn substantially under the wearer's foot. In one embodiment, the upper portions 301a, 302a, 303a, 304a are each formed as a single injection molded piece with their respective insole portions 301b, 302b, 303b, 304b, so that the first shoe portions 301, 302, 303, 304 are each formed as a single injection molded piece. In one embodiment, the single injection molded piece is formed of EVA foam. Alternatively, other materials may be used.In another embodiment, the upper portions 301a, 302a, 303a, 304a may each be formed as a separate piece from its corresponding insole portion 301b, 302b, 303b, 304b, which are joined by any conventional means.
[0044] In one embodiment, the multifunctional shoe system 300 also includes a second shoe portion 305 configured to be securely, semi-permanently, removably connected to the first shoe portions 301, 302, 303, 304. The second shoe portion 305 includes one or more apertures 106 through which one or more plugs 104 of any of the first shoe portions 301, 302, 303, 304 can be received, with the plugs 104 extending substantially completely through the corresponding apertures 106. By extending substantially completely through the corresponding apertures 106, the plugs 104 provide a secure, semi-permanent, removable attachment and can provide a contrasting design in the event that the first shoe portion 301, 302, 303, 304 connected to one second shoe portion 305 has a different color, pattern, or texture than the second shoe portion 305.
[0045] In one embodiment, each of the first shoe portions 301, 302, 303, 304 uses substantially the same number, size, shape, and configuration of plugs 104, and the second shoe portion 305 uses a corresponding number, size, shape, and configuration of apertures 106. In this manner, the second shoe portion 305 is interchangeable with each of the first shoe portions 301, 302, 303, 304.
[0046] exist Figure 3 In the illustrated embodiment of the shoe system 300, the plugs 104 extending substantially laterally from each side of each first shoe portion 301, 302, 303, 304 are substantially parallelogram shaped, and the corresponding apertures 106 in the second shoe portion 305 are also substantially parallelogram shaped and sized to receive the plugs 104. However, any combination and type of shapes may be used for the plugs and corresponding apertures in the shoe system 300, as long as each first shoe portion 301, 302, 303, 304 uses substantially the same number, size, shape, and configuration of plugs 104. For example, the plugs and corresponding apertures may be triangles, rectangles, parallelograms, circles, squares, diamonds, ovals, pentagons, hexagons, heptagons, octagons, etc. These and other shapes may also be used to create different contrasting designs when the first shoe portions 301, 302, 303, 304 each have a different color, pattern, or texture than one second shoe portion 305. For example, the plug 104 and corresponding aperture 106 can be substantially star-shaped, thereby forming a contrasting star-shaped design; heart-shaped, thereby forming a contrasting heart-shaped design; or any other conceivable shape as long as it still allows the plug 104 and aperture 106 to be used to securely, semi-permanently, and removably connect one second shoe portion 305 to each of the first shoe portions 301, 302, 303, 304 at a given time.
[0047] In an embodiment of the shoe system 300, the one second shoe portion 305 includes a tread portion 107 located on a bottom side of the one second shoe portion 305, for example Figure 1F The tread portion 107 may be a separate piece that is joined to the one second shoe portion 305 by any conventional means, such as by gluing the tread portion 107 to the underside of the one second shoe portion 305. Alternatively, the one second shoe portion 305 and the tread portion 107 may be formed as a single injection molded piece from EVA foam. Figure 1F As shown, the tread portion 107 can be sized to be smaller than the bottom side of the second shoe portion 305. Alternatively, the tread portion 107 can be sized to have substantially the same size and shape as the bottom side of the second shoe portion 305.
[0048] In one embodiment of the shoe system, the tread portion 107 includes a tread pattern that is configured to give the one second shoe portion 305 the desired properties for a given situation or use. For example, the tread pattern may be configured to make the one second shoe portion 305 oil resistant and / or non-slip. In another embodiment, the tread pattern may be configured to make the one second shoe portion 305 ideal for hiking or similar applications. In another embodiment, in addition to or as an alternative to the tread pattern itself being configured to make the second shoe portion oil resistant and / or non-slip, the bottom side of the second shoe portion 305 may be made of a material that makes the bottom side oil resistant and / or non-slip. In this way, consumers who need a specific type of sole but want a variety of shoe types can meet their needs and expectations through a single shoe system 300. For example, a first responder may need a shoe with an oil resistant or non-slip bottom. Through the shoe system 300, the first responder can have a variety of shoe types with the same oil resistant and / or non-slip bottom, thereby providing versatility, flexibility, and customizability to the user.
[0049] In the embodiment of the shoe system 300, as an alternative to multiple first shoe parts and one second shoe part, a first shoe part and two or more second shoe parts are provided. The first shoe part includes an upper part and an insole part, and is formed as a single injection molded part of EVA foam. Alternatively, other materials can be used. The second shoe parts are each formed as a separate single injection molded part of EVA foam. Alternatively, other materials can be used. The first shoe part includes one or more plugs 104, which are configured to be received in one or more corresponding pores 106 formed in each of the two or more second shoe parts, as described herein with reference to other embodiments. Each of the two or more second shoe parts uses pores 106 of approximately the same number, size, shape and configuration, corresponding to the number, size, shape and configuration of the plugs 104 extending from the first shoe part. In this way, the first shoe part can be interchangeable with each of the two or more second shoe parts. In such a shoe system, each of the second shoe parts can be configured to be used for different purposes. For example, the shoe system 300 can include a second shoe portion that is oil-resistant and / or slip-resistant; a second shoe portion that is substantially smooth and therefore more suitable for indoor wear; etc. In this way, a single shoe system 300 can provide a single shoe type (e.g., a Croc with a heel strap) that can be used for multiple purposes.
[0050] Steering Figure 4, which shows a method 400 of using an embodiment of a multifunctional shoe system. In block 401, the first shoe portion 301 is connected to the second shoe portion 305 by the user inserting the plug 104 extending from the first shoe portion 301 into the corresponding aperture 106 of the second shoe portion 305 with his hand. Then, as shown in block 402, the user can wear the shoe for its desired purpose. For example, in an embodiment where the first shoe portion 301 is a hole shoe type with a heel strap and the user is a nurse, the user can wear the shoe during his shift at the hospital. In block 403, the user can disconnect the first shoe portion 301 from the second shoe portion 305 by applying force with one or more of his hands, thereby pulling the first shoe portion 301 away from the second shoe portion 305 by removing the plug 104 of the first shoe portion 301 from the corresponding aperture 106 of the second shoe portion. Then, the user can select a new first shoe portion, such as first shoe portion 302, and at box 404, connect the first shoe portion 302 to the second shoe portion 305 by inserting the plug 104 extending from the first shoe portion 302 into the corresponding aperture 106 of the second shoe portion 305. Then, as shown in box 405, the user can wear the new shoe for its desired purpose. For example, in an embodiment where the first shoe portion 302 is a loafer type and the user is the same nurse, by replacing the first shoe portion 302, the nurse is now ready to go to the grocery store after get off work. These steps of connecting and disconnecting different first shoe portions to the second shoe portion can be repeated indefinitely according to the needs of the user, as shown in box 406. In this way, the embodiment of the multifunctional shoe system 300 provides versatility, flexibility and customizability to the user.
