Description

[0001] The invention relates to an electronic module for installation on a data bus for transmitting data signals. In particular, the invention relates to a switchable CAN (Controller Area Network) bus termination that can be switched on without interfering with the software or the wiring harness of the bus participants.

[0002] In the automotive sector, especially in industrial trucks or warehouse equipment, the CAN bus is commonly used as the data connection between components. This CAN bus is a differential data bus, which, due to its physical properties, requires a so-called terminating resistor at the physical beginning and end of the cable connection.

[0003] This resistor physically terminates the bus with the appropriate characteristic impedance. This prevents reflections of the data signals at the physical end of the transmission path. Without this termination resistor, reflections occur at the end of the cable, distorting the data signal and thus rendering it unreadable. Typically, a 120-ohm resistor is used, matching the cable. The resistor is connected between the CAN-High and CAN-Low signal lines.

[0004] Depending on whether the module is physically installed at the beginning, end or middle of the data bus, it requires a terminating resistor or not. This means that the electronic module, e.g. control units or inverters, must be available in at least one version with a terminating resistor and one version without. Another well-known option is to have the CAN terminating resistor switched on by the main processor of the module to be connected. However, this requires a parameter or a piece of software within the module to be connected that controls this function. This in turn requires a new version of the module, since a module identification number describes exactly one piece of hardware with the associated software and configuration. It is not possible to trade different configurations under one identification number.

[0005] Another method used today is the use of a wire jumper on the module's connector to connect the module's terminating resistor to the data bus. However, wire jumpers on the connector require additional hardware overhead. A crimp contact on the connector must be crimped with two wires to create the bridge. This is complex and expensive.

[0006] As described above, the use of the CAN bus in the vehicle requires the availability of at least one variant with and one variant without CAN terminating resistor of the same module.

[0007] The present invention is based on the object of creating a module for installation on the data bus, in particular CAN bus, which can be used for both variants described above, ie with and without terminating resistor, without great hardware or software expenditure.

[0008] In particular, it is an object of the present invention to provide an assembly for installation on the CAN bus that is capable of handling different configurations using a single identification number.

[0009] The object is achieved by the subject matter of the independent claims. Advantageous developments of the invention are specified in the dependent claims, the description, and the accompanying figures.

[0010] The invention is based on the concept of using only one hardware variant of the module with an internal circuit that can activate the CAN termination resistor via an external signal. Each module is powered by a supply voltage in the vehicle, for example, 13V.

[0011] In this invention, the module has two supply pins on the connector, which, when connected to the 13V supply, can supply the module with voltage. Depending on which of these two supply pins is supplied with, for example, 13V, the terminating resistor is activated or deactivated by the internal, easily implemented and very cost-effective circuit.

[0012] The additional or internal circuit uses in particular an analog switch which, when activated, switches the 120 Ohm terminating resistor between the two differential data lines CAN-High and CAN-Low.

[0013] This has the major advantage that there is only one version of the module. No jumper wire is required on the connector. The user of this module only needs to connect the module's 13V supply to one or the other pin to decide whether the termination resistor should be activated or not.

[0014] No branching or splicing is required in the wiring harness to the assembly, saving additional costs.

[0015] For example, two identical modules, and therefore with the same ID number, can now be installed on the CAN bus. Depending on which of the two supply connections on the connector is used to supply the 13V power, the terminating resistor is activated accordingly.

[0016] Identical components can then be exchanged with each other.

[0017] Identical components reduce the number of variants, which also simplifies vehicle servicing. Service technicians need to carry fewer spare parts.

[0018] The storage and production of the assemblies are simplified by the smaller number of variants.

[0019] According to a first aspect, the above-described object is achieved according to the invention by an electronic assembly for installation on a data bus for transmitting data signals, wherein the electronic assembly comprises the following: an electrical connector for electrically connecting the assembly to the data bus, wherein the connector comprises a first data line and a second data line; a terminating resistor that can be switched between the first data line and the second data line and is designed to terminate the data bus with a predetermined characteristic impedance; and a switch that can be switched into a first switching state and a second switching state and is designed to switch the terminating resistor between the first data line and the second data line in the first switching state and not to switch the terminating resistor between the first data line and the second data line in the second switching state.wherein the connector comprises a first supply terminal and a second supply terminal, which are mutually connectable to an external power supply; wherein connecting the first supply terminal to the external power supply switches the switch to the second switching state; and wherein connecting the second supply terminal to the external power supply switches the switch to the first switching state.

[0020] Such a module can be installed on the data bus, for example, the CAN bus, without major hardware or software effort and can be used for both variants described above: the variant with terminating resistor and the variant without terminating resistor. Depending on which of the connector's two power connections is connected to the external power supply, the module operates in the first variant or the second variant. This allows the module to handle various configurations using a single identification number.

[0021] According to an exemplary embodiment of the electronic assembly, the switch comprises a control terminal via which the switch can be switched into the first switching state or the second switching state, wherein when a voltage is applied to the control terminal, the switch switches into the first switching state; and wherein when a voltage is not applied to the control terminal, the switch switches into the second switching state.

[0022] The switch can therefore be easily implemented, for example as an analog switch or as a relay, which can be switched from the first switching state to the second switching state and back to the first switching state via the control connection.

[0023] According to an exemplary embodiment of the electronic assembly, the control terminal of the switch is connected to the second supply terminal of the connector, so that connecting the external voltage supply to the second supply terminal switches the switch to the first switching state.

[0024] According to an exemplary embodiment of the electronic assembly, the data bus comprises a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus.

[0025] Such a CAN bus is most commonly used in automotive applications. The CAN bus is a data exchange bus. It enables mutual communication between electronic components on board a vehicle. It enables speeds of up to 1 Mbit / s, for example, and is a two-wire, half-duplex network. The linear bus topology offers the CAN bus several advantages: Cabling effort is minimal. An inexpensive and easy-to-use twisted-pair cable serves as the transmission medium. CAN stations can be retrofitted and removed relatively easily from the existing CAN bus.

[0026] According to an exemplary embodiment of the electronic assembly, the terminating resistor is a 120 ohm resistor.

[0027] Such a 120 ohm resistor enables the termination of the data line with the characteristic impedance, so that no reflections occur at the end or beginning of the cable or these are very strongly attenuated.

[0028] According to an exemplary embodiment of the electronic assembly, when the electronic assembly is installed at a beginning or an end of the data bus, the switch can be switched to the first switching state in order to terminate the data bus with the predetermined characteristic impedance; and when the electronic assembly is installed in a middle region of the data bus, the switch can be switched to the second switching state in order not to terminate the data bus with the predetermined characteristic impedance.

[0029] This allows for two module variants to be implemented: the first variant with the insertion of the terminating resistor, when the module is installed at the beginning or end of the data bus, and the second variant without the insertion of the terminating resistor, when the module is installed in the middle of the data bus. The same module can be used for both variants, requiring only one identification number. This reduces the number of module variants and allows for cost-effective and labor-efficient production.

[0030] According to an exemplary embodiment of the electronic assembly, the terminating resistor is designed to suppress reflections of the data signals at the beginning or the end of the data bus.

[0031] If the data bus is terminated with the characteristic impedance between the first and second data lines, reflections of the data signals are suppressed or even eliminated. For a given data bus configuration, the characteristic impedance is known, for example, 120 ohms for the CAN bus. The termination resistance can therefore have a fixed value of, for example, 120 ohms, depending on the data bus used.

[0032] According to an exemplary embodiment of the electronic assembly, the first data line and the second data line are formed as a differential data line.

[0033] By calculating the difference between the two conductor potentials (differential data line), the interference is almost completely eliminated. The useful signal is then obtained by calculating the difference between the first data line and the second data line.

[0034] According to an exemplary embodiment of the electronic assembly, the switch is designed as an analog switch.

[0035] An analog switch can be implemented as a digitally controlled semiconductor switch suitable for switching analog signals. Such an analog switch can be implemented, for example, as an integrated circuit using MOSFETs.

[0036] Such an analog switch is simple and cost-effective to implement and offers high switching speeds.

[0037] According to an exemplary embodiment of the electronic assembly, the electronic assembly comprises: a transceiver for transmitting and receiving the data signals via the first data line and the second data line; a microcontroller for processing the data signals received and to be transmitted via the transceiver; and an internal voltage supply, which can be supplied with voltage via the first supply connection and the second supply connection and is configured to supply the microcontroller with voltage.

[0038] These electronic components allow the module to be connected to the data bus, transmitting the data signals, and supplying them with power. The microcontroller and transceiver can be used to implement suitable bus protocols, such as CAN bus, fieldbus, LIN bus, M-Bus, etc.

[0039] According to a second aspect, the above-described object is achieved according to the invention by an industrial truck with an electronic assembly for transmitting data signals according to the first aspect.

[0040] The electronic assembly described above allows the industrial truck to be manufactured efficiently and cost-effectively. The assembly can be installed on the data bus, for example, the CAN bus, without significant hardware or software complexity, enabling the industrial truck to transmit data via the data bus, for example, to other components within the truck. The assembly can be used in various configurations on the industrial truck using a single identification number.

[0041] According to a third aspect, the above-described object is achieved according to the invention by a method for installing an electronic assembly according to the first aspect for transmitting data signals on a data bus, the method comprising the following: connecting the first supply connection to the external voltage supply for switching the switch to the first switching state in order to terminate the data bus with the predetermined characteristic impedance, when the assembly is installed at a start or an end of the data bus; and / or connecting the second supply connection to the external voltage supply for switching the switch to the second switching state in order not to terminate the data bus with the predetermined characteristic impedance, when the assembly is installed in a middle region of the data bus.

[0042] With such a method, the electronic assembly can be installed on the data bus, for example on the CAN bus, without major hardware or software expenditure and can be used for both variants described above, i.e. the variant with a terminating resistor at the beginning or end of the data bus and the variant without a terminating resistor in the middle area of the data bus.

[0043] The middle area of the data bus is the area between the beginning and the end of the data bus, i.e. for the use of the module in the middle of the data bus, where no terminating resistor is required, for example because other modules are already installed at the beginning and end of the data bus, which implement a terminating resistor.

[0044] Further advantages and details of the invention are explained in more detail with reference to the embodiment shown in the schematic figure. [0048] Fig. 1 shows a circuit diagram of an electronic assembly 100 according to the invention for installation on a data bus 116.

[0049] The electronic assembly 100 is designed to be installed on a data bus 116 for transmitting data signals.

[0050] The electronic assembly 100 comprises an electrical connector 110 for mechanically plugging and electrically connecting the assembly 100 to the data bus 116. The connector 110 comprises a first data line 111 and a second data line 112.

[0051] The electronic assembly 100 comprises a terminating resistor 130 which can be connected between the first data line 111 and the second data line 112 and is designed to terminate the data bus 116 with a predetermined characteristic impedance.

[0052] The electronic assembly 100 comprises a switch 120, which can be switched into a first switching state and a second switching state, and is designed to switch the terminating resistor 130 between the first data line 111 and the second data line 112 in the first switching state and not to switch the terminating resistor 130 between the first data line 111 and the second data line 111 in the second switching state. For example, the switch 120 is switched on or closed in the first switching state, so that it switches the terminating resistor 130 between the two data lines 111, 112, and is switched off or open in the second state, so that it switches off or allows the path with the terminating resistor 130 between the two data lines 111, 112 to run idle and thus does not switch the terminating resistor 130 between the two data lines 111, 112.

[0053] The connector 110 further comprises a first supply connection 113 and a second supply connection 114, which are mutually connected to an external, ie module-external, power supply (not included in Fig. 1). Alternately means that either the first supply terminal 113 or the second supply terminal 114 can be connected to the external power supply.

[0054] Connecting the first supply terminal 113 to the external voltage supply switches the switch 120 to the second switching state and connecting the second supply terminal 114 to the external voltage supply switches the switch 120 to the first switching state.

[0055] The switch 120 includes a control terminal 121, via which the switch 120 can be switched to the first switching state or the second switching state. When a voltage is applied to the control terminal 121, which is, for example, in the range of the external supply voltage, the switch 120 switches to the first switching state; and when a voltage is not applied to the control terminal 121, which is, for example, in the range of the external supply voltage, the switch 120 switches to the second switching state.

[0056] The supply voltage provided by the external power supply can be, for example, 13V.

[0057] The first data line 111 can, for example, be a CAN-high data line with a voltage level greater than 3.5 V, and the second data line 112 can be a CAN-low data line with a voltage level less than 1.5 V. A third data line 115, implemented as ground (GND), is optional.

[0058] The control terminal 121 of the switch 120 is connected to the second supply terminal 114, so that connecting the external voltage supply to the second supply terminal 114 of the connector 110 switches the switch 120 to the first switching state and connects the terminating resistor 130 between the two data lines 111, 112.

[0059] The data bus 116 comprises or is, for example, a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus.

[0060] The CAN bus operates according to the "multi-master principle," meaning it connects several equal control units, or in this case, 100 electronic assemblies. A CSMA / CR procedure resolves collisions caused by simultaneous bus access. The data is NRZ-encoded, with bit padding for continuous synchronization. Cyclic redundancy checking is used to increase transmission reliability.

[0061] In the case of copper cables, the CAN bus operates with two twisted-pair wires, CAN_High and CAN_Low, in symmetrical signal transmission. CAN_GND (ground) as the third wire is optional, but is often present together with a fourth wire for the 13 V power supply. In this module 100, this fourth wire is implemented by the two supply terminals 113, 114, which alternately connect the external 13 V power supply in this example.

[0062] The terminating resistor 130, for example, is a 120 Ohm resistor that terminates the bus with the characteristic impedance for the CAN bus.

[0063] When a line or the data bus 116 is terminated with the terminating resistor 130, incoming current or voltage pulses are not reflected if the terminating resistor 130 has the value of the characteristic impedance. For other values, the ratio between the forward and return waves corresponds to the reflection factor. The characteristic impedance is usually real and known for a given line; for example, the CAN bus has a characteristic impedance of 120 ohms.

[0064] When the electronic assembly 100 is installed at a beginning or an end of the data bus 116, the switch 120 can be switched to the first switching state in order to terminate the data bus 116 with the predetermined characteristic impedance.

[0065] When the electronic assembly 100 is installed in a central region of the data bus 116, i.e., between the beginning and end of the data bus 116, the switch 120 can be switched to the second switching state so as not to terminate the data bus 116 with the specified characteristic impedance. Reflections only occur at the beginning and end of the line or data bus 116, but not in the middle, so the characteristic impedance only needs to be added at the beginning and end of the line, but not in the middle of the line.

[0066] The terminating resistor 130 is designed to suppress reflections of the data signals at the beginning or end of the data bus 116. This occurs when the terminating resistor 130 corresponds to the characteristic impedance of the line or data bus 116, ie, here, the line formed by the first data line 111 and the second data line 112.

[0067] The first data line 111 and the second data line 112 are configured, for example, as a differential data line. This reduces susceptibility to interference, as the interference can be filtered out by forming the difference between the two data lines 111, 112.

[0068] The switch 120 is designed, for example, as an analog switch.

[0069] The electronic assembly 100 further comprises a transceiver 150 for transmitting and receiving the data signals RXD, TXD via the first data line 111 and the second data line 112.

[0070] The electronic assembly 100 further comprises a microcontroller 140 for processing the data signals RXD, TXD received and to be transmitted via the transceiver 150.

[0071] The electronic assembly 100 also includes an internal voltage supply 160, which can be supplied with voltage via the first supply connection 113 and the second supply connection 114 and is designed to supply the microcontroller 140 with voltage.

[0072] The transceiver 150 can be powered by the microcontroller 140 or by the internal power supply 160.

[0073] A first diode D1 can be connected in the path between the first supply terminal 113 and the internal voltage supply 160, which is connected in such a way that a backflow of the current from the internal voltage supply 160 to the external voltage supply via the first supply terminal 113 is prevented.

[0074] A second diode D2 can be connected in the path between the second supply terminal 114 and the internal voltage supply 160, which is connected in such a way that a backflow of the current from the internal voltage supply 160 to the external voltage supply via the second supply terminal 114 is prevented.

[0075] With this electronic module 100, only a hardware variant of the module 100 with an internal circuit 120 needs to be used, which can connect the CAN termination resistor 130 via an external signal. Each module 100 is powered by a supply voltage, for example, 13V, in the vehicle.

[0076] According to the invention, the module 100 has two supply connections (pins) 113, 114 on the connector 110, which, when connected to the 13V supply, can supply voltage to the module 100. Depending on which of these two supply connections 113, 114 is supplied with, for example, 13V, the CAN termination 130 is activated or deactivated by the internal, easily implemented and very cost-effective circuit 120.

[0077] The additional or internal circuit 120 uses an analog switch 120 which, when activated, switches the 120 Ohm terminating resistor 130 between the two differential data lines CAN-High 111 and CAN-Low 112.

[0078] This has the great advantage that there is only one variant of module 100. No jumper wire is required on connector 110. The user of this module 100 only needs to connect the module's 13V supply to one or the other of pins 113 and 114 to decide whether the terminating resistor 130 should be activated or not.

[0079] No branch or splice needs to be installed in the wiring harness for assembly 100. This saves further costs.

[0080] For example, two identical modules 100 with identical identification numbers can now be installed on the CAN bus 116. Depending on which supply pin 113, 114 on connector 110 is used to supply the 13V supply, the terminating resistor 130 is activated accordingly.

[0081] Identical components can then be exchanged with each other.

[0082] Identical components reduce the number of variants, which also simplifies vehicle servicing. Service technicians need to carry fewer spare parts.

[0083] The storage and production of the assemblies are simplified by the smaller number of variants.

[0084] In summary, fewer variants of the same assemblies are required (warehousing, administration, master data in SAP, spare parts management, etc.), and the costs of vehicle wiring are reduced when wire jumpers are no longer required in the wiring harness. This amounts to approximately €1 per wire jumper, for example.

[0085] The electronic assembly 100 described here can be used in an industrial truck for transmitting data signals.

[0086] Such industrial trucks include, for example, counterbalance forklifts, reach trucks or warehouse technology equipment such as pallet trucks, order pickers or tractors.

[0087] Fig. 2 shows a schematic diagram of a method according to the invention for installing an electronic assembly on a data bus.

[0088] The method 200 is for installing an electronic assembly 100 as described above in Fig. 1, on a data bus 116.

[0089] The method 200 includes connecting 201 the first supply terminal 113 to the external voltage supply to switch the switch 120 to the first switching state to terminate the data bus 116 with the predetermined characteristic impedance when the assembly 100 is installed at a beginning or an end of the data bus 116.

[0090] The method 200 includes connecting 202 the second supply terminal 114 to the external voltage supply to switch the switch 120 to the second switching state in order not to terminate the data bus 116 with the predetermined characteristic impedance when the assembly 100 is installed in a central region of the data bus 116.
