Description

[0001] The invention relates to a bendable cannula protector for one-handed operation and an arrangement with a bendable cannula protector. background

[0002] To prevent injuries when handling needles, they are often covered with a needle guard, which is only removed shortly before use. Such a guard covers the needle, preventing accidental piercing of the treating person or third parties before the intended piercing of a person being treated. For example, the need for such protection for employees may arise from the "Technical Rule for Biological Agents (TRBA) 250 Biological Agents in Healthcare and Welfare."

[0003] In particular, after a cannula has been used, a cannula protector can be (re)placed over the cannula to prevent injuries. In particular, preventing injuries also serves to prevent the transmission of diseases. In this context, it is particularly known to provide a separate cannula protector that is to be removed and disposed of before use, while a (further) cannula protector is foldably attached to the cannula for use after the cannula has been used.

[0004] A pivoting needle guard with increased safety is known from document WO 2010 / 128344 A1. This device features valve-type devices that prevent the needle guard from being removed again when reapplied after it has been previously removed. Summary

[0005] The object of the invention is to provide an improved cannula protector, in particular with improved operability and operator safety as well as increased efficiency.

[0006] To achieve the object, a bendable cannula protector for one-handed operation is provided according to independent claim 1. Furthermore, an arrangement according to claim 14 is provided. Embodiments are the subject of dependent claims in the appended set of claims.

[0007] According to one aspect, a bendable cannula protector for one-handed operation is provided, comprising a tubular protective portion configured to receive a cannula longitudinally within the tubular protective portion, and a fastening portion formed with a fastening device configured for attachment to a proximal end of a cannula. The protective portion is connected to the fastening portion by a hinge in a bendable manner such that the protective portion is pivotable relative to the fastening portion between a closed position, in which the protective portion and the fastening portion are arranged axially one behind the other, and an open position, in which the protective portion is angled relative to the fastening portion. The protective section has a slot which extends in the axial direction in a side wall of the protective section, is open to a side of the protective section facing the fastening section in the closed position, and is closed to a side of the protective section facing away from the fastening section in the closed position. The hinge is arranged on a side of the protective section radially opposite the slot. An actuating lever is formed on the side of the protective section opposite the slot, which is arranged at a distance from the hinge in the axial direction of the protective section and extends radially away from the protective section. At least one valve mechanism is formed in the protective portion, which allows a cannula to pass through the valve mechanism in a direction from the slot to a portion of the side wall of the protective portion opposite the slot, and prevents a cannula from passing through the valve mechanism in a direction from a portion of the side wall of the protective portion opposite the slot to the slot.

[0008] According to a further aspect, an arrangement comprising a cannula and a bendable cannula protector according to the disclosure is provided. The fastening section is arranged and secured on a proximal end of the cannula (i.e., for example, the end facing a syringe during use of the cannula) such that the cannula is arranged within the protector when the protector is closed and is arranged outside the protector when the protector is open.

[0009] It follows that an arrangement of the protective section and the fastening section in the closed position axially one behind the other relates in particular to an axial direction of a cannula arranged in use in the cannula guard, which in the closed position (but not in the open position) corresponds to the axial direction of the protective section. In this respect, the protective section in the closed position can be referred to as being arranged distal to the fastening section. It follows that the side of the protective section facing the fastening section in the closed position is a proximal side or a proximal end, and that the side of the protective section facing away from the fastening section in the closed position is a distal side or a distal end of the protective section.

[0010] The slot is at least as long as a section of a cannula used with the cannula protector that is arranged in the protective section when closed. In conjunction with the relative arrangement of the slot and hinge, this results in the cannula moving through the slot when the protective section moves from the closed position to the open position, and when the protective section moves from the open position to the closed position.

[0011] With regard to the effect of the valve mechanism to prevent a cannula from passing through the valve mechanism in a direction from a section of the side wall of the protective section opposite the slot to the slot, it should be noted that this effect is guaranteed for expected conditions during intended use, including, where appropriate, operating errors that are to be expected within the usual scope, but can be overcome by the application of considerable force.

[0012] The tubular protective section preferably has a round cross-section. Alternatively, a polygonal or other geometrically shaped cross-section can be provided, in which case the side wall of the protective section consists of several wall sections arranged around a central lumen of the protective section.

[0013] The operating lever enables one-handed operation of the needle guard. In particular, it can be provided that the operating lever is operated by the user's thumb while the same hand of the user holds the needle or a syringe or other structure (e.g., an infusion tube) to which the needle is attached. Accordingly, the operating lever can be designed, in particular, as a thumb grip, whose dimensions are adapted for comfortable and safe operation with one thumb.

[0014] The bendable cannula protector is designed in particular to protect the cannula both before and after its use, so that in comparison to variants previously available on the market with a cannula protector that can be removed before use of the cannula and a separate cannula protector that can be applied after use of the cannula, a significantly lower use of material and thus improved environmental friendliness, lower weight, smaller package size and / or consequently also lower transport costs can be made possible.

[0015] The actuating lever can extend away from the hinge in the axial direction of the protective section. Preferably, the actuating lever is formed on the protective section at a distance from the hinge. In such embodiments, an extension away from the hinge is understood to mean an increase in the distance to the hinge along the course of the actuating lever. The actuating lever can thus extend obliquely away from the protective section relative to the longitudinal axis of the protective section (and the longitudinal axis of a cannula arranged in the protective section in the closed position). This can assist actuation of the actuating lever with a thumb. In a preferred embodiment, an angle spanned between the actuating lever and the protective portion can be between 45° and 90°, wherein a configuration with an angle of 90° is then a configuration in which the actuating lever certainly does not extend away from the hinge.

[0016] The operating lever can be designed with a bend pointing away from the hinge in the axial direction of the protective section. This allows the operating lever to be further adapted for operation with a thumb, in particular by forming a grip recess on a side of the operating lever facing away from the hinge, which is designed for use with a thumb.

[0017] Alternatively, the side of the operating lever facing away from the hinge can be designed straight. In this case, an angled extension of the operating lever can still create a grip recess suitable for use with a thumb.

[0018] In both designs with and without a recessed grip, a structure can be provided on the upper side of the actuating lever, i.e., a distal side or a side facing away from the fastening section in the closed position. For example, grooves can be formed on the upper side. This can provide more resistance and / or a better grip for the thumb placed on the lever for actuation.

[0019] The length of the actuating lever can be at least 7.5 mm. In some embodiments, the actuating lever can have a length between 7.5 mm and 15 mm.

[0020] The needle protector can be formed in one piece. For example, the needle protector can be manufactured using a casting process, such as an injection molding process. The needle protector can be made of plastic. Plastic materials suitable for the disclosed application are widely available and well-known on the market, so they need not be discussed in detail here. A one-piece design of the needle protector can be made of a single material or of multiple materials. For example, the needle protector can be made of one plastic using injection molding or of several different plastics using multi-component injection molding.

[0021] The hinge can be designed as a film hinge. Film hinges are known in the art. In this case, the hinge is formed by a thin-walled connection compared to the components to be connected, which, due to its flexibility, allows rotation of the connected parts.

[0022] The hinge can be designed as a self-locking hinge in the open position. In this case, the protective section is prevented from moving out of the open position by itself. To move the protective section out of the open position, a force must be applied that overcomes the self-locking mechanism. Additionally, the hinge can be designed as a self-locking hinge in the closed position.

[0023] The hinge can be a self-locking film hinge. So-called snap hinges of this type are known as such from the prior art. For example, document EP 0 309 396 A1 describes a snap hinge closure made of plastic. In particular, it can be provided that the hinge is formed with three film elements arranged next to one another, wherein at least one of the film elements is designed as a simple film hinge with a hinge groove and at least one further film element is designed as a spring element with at least two hinge grooves, so that when the protective section is moved into the open position, the at least one further film element exerts a snap action which locks the hinge in the open position. In this case, in particular, exactly one hinge groove is provided for the at least one film element designed as a simple film hinge. The at least one further film element can be designed, in particular, with two or three articulation grooves. In such embodiments, it can be provided, in particular, that the two outer film elements are of the same design, while the inner film element has a different design than the outer film elements.

[0024] Further film elements may be provided, in which case preferably all film elements are alternately designed as a simple film hinge or spring element according to the preceding description.

[0025] Film elements according to the preceding description can be formed separately from one another or can be designed to merge into one another in one piece.

[0026] The bendable cannula protector can have at least one connecting element designed as a predetermined breaking point, which connects the protective section to the fastening section in the closed position and holds the protective section in the closed position. The at least one connecting element is designed to be destroyed by a force applied to the actuating lever under leverage, thereby enabling the protective section to move into the open position. Several such connecting elements designed as predetermined breaking points can be provided in order to ensure sufficient stability of the protective section in the closed position for a given application, preventing the connecting elements from being destroyed. Several connecting elements can be arranged in a correspondingly suitable manner along the circumference of the protective section. In particular, at least one connecting element can be provided on both sides of the slot.

[0027] The valve mechanism can be formed with two valve elements which extend from opposite wall sections of the protective section towards each other and are designed such that, when a force is applied from a side of the protective section facing the slot, they open an opening for the passage of a cannula, and when a force is applied from a side of the protective section facing away from the slot, they do not open the opening and thereby prevent the passage of a cannula. Preferably, the valve elements are connected to wall sections which can be described as lateral to a front-rear direction running through the slot and the hinge, for example at an angle of approximately 90 degrees to the slot and the hinge. Possible embodiments of such valve elements are described, for example, in the document WO 2010 / 128344 A1. These embodiments, in particular as in connection with the Fig. 5, Fig. 15, Fig. 16 and Fig. 17, can be provided accordingly for the valve mechanism according to the disclosure.

[0028] In a preferred embodiment, a first valve element of the two valve elements can be flexible and a second valve element of the two valve elements can be rigid, wherein the first and second valve elements are arranged overlapping one another in a central region of the protective section, and the second valve element is arranged facing the slot in an overlap region of the valve elements, and the first valve element is arranged facing away from the slot in the overlap region. In this context, a flexible design of the first valve element is understood to mean that it can be deformed under the force expected during use of the cannula protector, in particular to enable a cannula to pass through the valve mechanism. In contrast, a rigid design of the second valve element means that no significant deformation of the second valve element occurs under the forces expected during use of the needle protector, possibly taking into account expected misuse. Appropriate rigidity of the valve elements can be achieved, in particular, by selecting appropriate material thicknesses in the relevant areas of the valve elements.

[0029] A recess can be formed in the second valve element, into which an end portion of the first valve element projects, particularly in a resting position, i.e., when no external force acts on the valve elements. In this case, it can be provided that the end portion of the first valve element rests in the recess. Alternatively, it can be provided that the end portion projects into the recess in such a way that an opening remains between the valve elements, wherein the opening is preferably smaller than the diameter of a cannula used with the cannula protector.By means of the design with the recess, it can be achieved that when a force acts on the first valve element in the direction of the slot, the first valve element rests against the recess, or wedges or clamps itself there, so that a passage between the valve elements is closed and the passage of a cannula through the valve mechanism in a direction from a section of the side wall of the protective section opposite the slot to the slot is prevented. In contrast, when a force acts on the first valve element from the direction of the slot, the first valve element is moved away from the recess, so that a passage between the valve elements is formed or enlarged, in order to thus allow the passage of a cannula through the valve mechanism in a direction from the slot to a section of the side wall of the protective section opposite the slot.

[0030] In the various embodiments of the valve mechanism, the valve mechanism can ensure that, after use of a cannula (i.e., after a previous movement of the protective section from the closed position to the open position), when the protective section is moved into the closed position, the protective section wraps around the cannula, and the cannula passes through the valve mechanism in a direction from the slot to a section of the side wall of the protective section opposite the slot. Subsequently, movement of the cannula back through the slot is prevented by the valve mechanism, so that a renewed movement of the protective section into the open position is also prevented, thus providing permanent protection against injury caused by the cannula.

[0031] The bendable cannula protector can have a second valve mechanism that is spaced apart from the valve mechanism in the axial direction of the protective section. The configurations described above in connection with the valve mechanism can be provided accordingly for the second valve mechanism. Thus, an upper and a lower valve mechanism are formed when the cannula is in an upright position and the protective section is closed. By providing the second valve mechanism, the cannula protector can be configured for use with cannulas of different lengths, wherein the valve mechanism is then ensured to operate at a short distance from a cannula end at which the greatest leverage occurs when a force is applied to the protective section towards the open position.

[0032] At least one additional valve mechanism can be provided, which is arranged on a side of the valve mechanism facing the slot and allows a cannula to pass through the additional valve mechanism under the action of force both in a direction from the slot to an interior of the protective section and in a direction from the interior of the protective section to the slot. In this case, the force required for the passage can be dimensioned such that, although a movement of the protective section into the open position by applying a force to the actuating lever (as well as a movement back into the closed position) is possible during normal use, an independent or undesired movement of the protective section into the open position during normal use is prevented.Possible embodiments of such an additional valve mechanism are described, for example, in document WO 2010 / 128344 A1. These embodiments, in particular in connection with the . Fig. 1, Fig. 2, Fig. 6 and Fig. 10, may be provided accordingly for the additional valve mechanism according to the disclosure.

[0033] In the arrangement, the outermost tip of the cannula preferably faces the slot when the protective section is in the closed position. This corresponds to the longest cannula side being oriented toward the slot. This allows the outermost tip, or longest cannula side, to be used facing a puncture site without the protective section in the open position hindering such use.

[0034] The assembly may additionally include a syringe connected to the cannula. Alternatively, the assembly may include another element connected to the cannula for use, such as an infusion tube. Description of implementation examples

[0035] Further embodiments are explained in more detail below with reference to the figures of a drawing. Herein: Fig. 1A to 1E schematic representations of an articulating needle protector in different orientations; Fig. 2A and Fig. 2B schematic representations of the bendable needle protector in the open state; Fig. 3A and Fig. 3B schematic cross-sectional views of a valve mechanism; Fig. 4A to 4C are schematic representations of another bendable cannula protector in different orientations; and Fig. 5A and Fig. 5B schematic representations of the further bendable cannula protector in the open state; Fig. 6 schematic representations of yet another bendable cannula protector in arrangements with different cannulas.

[0036] The Fig. 1A, Fig. 1B and Fig. 1C show a bendable cannula protector for receiving a cannula 1 and protecting against injuries caused by the cannula 1 during handling. The cannula protector is formed with a tubular protective section 2, which in the illustration of Fig. 1A to 1E in a closed position, in which the protective section 2 and an adjoining fastening section 3 are arranged axially one behind the other with respect to a longitudinal axis of the protective section 2. The protective section 2 is connected to the fastening section 3 via a hinge 4.

[0037] In the arrangement shown, the fastening section 3 is connected by means of a fastening device to a proximal end 5 of the cannula 1, which is connected, for example, to a syringe during use of the cannula. Corresponding connection mechanisms are well known in the art and therefore need not be described in detail here.

[0038] In the closed position, the protective section 2 completely surrounds the cannula 1, thus preventing a person from being injured by the cannula. As best shown in the detailed illustrations of the Fig. 1D and Fig. 1E, the protective section 2 and the fastening section 3 are additionally connected via connecting elements 6, which prevent movement of the protective section 2 around the hinge 4 relative to the fastening section.

[0039] An actuating lever 7 is formed on the protective section 2, which extends radially outward from the protective section 2 and, in the embodiment shown, is curved upwards, i.e., axially from the hinge 4. This shape allows a thumb to be comfortably inserted into the recess 8 thus formed in order to exert a force in the axial direction towards the hinge 4 to open the needle protector. To open the needle protector, the holding force of the connecting elements 6, which are designed as predetermined breaking points, must be overcome, so that these are destroyed, i.e., break or tear, and thereby enable movement of the protective section 2 around the hinge 4.

[0040] The protective section 2 then pivots about the hinge 4 into an open position. The cannula 1 moves through a slot 10 formed in a side wall 9 of the protective section 2. As shown in the Fig. 1A and Fig. 1B, the slot 10 is open towards a side of the protective section 2 facing the hinge 4 (and in the closed position the fastening section 3) and closed towards a side of the protective section 2 facing away from the hinge 4, so that the protective section 2 has a closed cross-section on the side facing away from the hinge 4, in the embodiment of the Fig. 1A to 1E circular, forms.

[0041] The Fig. 2A and Fig. 2B show the cannula protection of the Fig. 1A to 1E in the open position of the protective section 2. The cannula 1 is released and ready for use. In the preferred embodiment of the Fig. 1A to 2B an absolute tip 11 and longest side of the cannula 1 facing away from the hinge 4 and (in the closed position) facing the slot 10.

[0042] The hinge 4 is designed as a snap hinge that locks automatically in the open position. For this purpose, the hinge 4 has three film elements, of which the outer film elements are formed as a simple film hinge 12, which has a single hinge groove 13 around which the film hinge 12 allows a pivoting movement. The middle of the film elements is designed as a spring element 14 with an angled shape and two hinge grooves 13. Due to the action of the spring element 14, the hinge 4 is self-locking in the open position of the protective section 2. In alternative embodiments, the spring element 14 can be curved or have a third hinge groove 13 instead of the angle.

[0043] A valve mechanism 15 is formed in the protective section 2, which restricts the passage of the cannula 1 through the valve mechanism. Passage in one direction coming from the slit 10 is possible, while passage in the opposite direction is prevented. In the initial state, with intact connecting elements 6, the cannula 1 is arranged on the side of the valve mechanism 15 facing the slit 10. If the protective section 2 is moved back into the closed position with sufficient force after a previous opening, the cannula 1 passes through the valve mechanism 15. Because a return exit of the cannula 1 in the opposite direction through the valve mechanism 15 is not possible, a renewed movement of the protective section 2 into the open position is prevented, thereby further increasing the safety against injury after use of the cannula 1.

[0044] The Fig. 3A and Fig. 3B show an exemplary embodiment of the valve mechanism 15 in detail. The valve mechanism 15 is formed with a first valve element 16 and a second valve element 17, which extend from opposite sides or wall sections of the side wall 9 of the protective section 2 to the center of the lumen of the protective section 2 and overlap in the center of the lumen. The first valve element 16 is designed to be flexible such that it can be bent by movement of the cannula 1. The second valve element 17, in contrast, is designed to be rigid such that it does not deform under the forces expected to occur during operation. In the region of the overlap, a gap is formed between the valve elements 16, 17. In the region of the gap, the second valve element 17 has a recess 18 in the form of an indentation, into which an end section 19 of the first valve element 16 projects.

[0045] The Fig. Figure 3A shows the cannula 1 in an initial position in which the cannula 1 is arranged between the slot 10 and the valve mechanism 15. If, after a previous opening of the protective section 2, the protective section 2 is moved back into the closed position, it moves (relatively, according to the illustration of Fig. 3A and Fig. 3B) the cannula moves towards the valve mechanism 15 and initially encounters the rigid second valve element 17 arranged facing the slot 10, is deflected by this and then encounters the second valve element 16 arranged facing away from the slot 10. Under the pressure of the cannula 1, the flexible first valve element 16 deforms, whereby the gap in the overlapping area of the valve elements 16, 17 enlarges. The cannula 1 passes through the enlarged gap and is now located in the area of the protective section 2 facing away from the slot 10, as in the Fig. 3B. Upon a renewed attempt to move the protective section 2 into the open position, the cannula moves (again relatively) toward the first valve element 16, but this now presses it onto the rigid second valve element 17 and, in particular, the end section 19 into the recess 18. This closes the gap in the overlap area. The cannula 1 can no longer exit from the area of the protective section 2 facing away from the slot 10. Opening of the cannula protector is prevented.

[0046] The apparently inadequate needle guard allows for one-handed operation, since when holding the needle 1 (or an element connected to the needle, such as a syringe) with one hand, the operating lever 7 can be operated with the thumb of the same hand to open the needle guard. The needle can then be used and, if necessary, the needle guard can be closed with one hand.

[0047] The previously described and in the Fig. The cannula protector shown in Figures 1A to 3B is integrally formed from plastic.

[0048] The Fig. 4A to 4C show an alternative design of a bendable needle protector. Compared to the design according to Fig. 1A to 2B, the needle protection has the following Fig. 4A to 4C, an actuating lever 7 with straight sides, which extends obliquely radially from the protective section and axially from the hinge 4. With such a configuration, a recess 8 is also formed, which, however, is not rounded. In addition, the cannula protector according to the Fig. 4A to 4C have an actuating section 20 which can be gripped to move the protective section 2 between the closed and the open position and which can be omitted in an alternative embodiment.

[0049] The Fig. 5A and Fig. 5B show the cannula protection of the Fig. 4A to 4C with protective section 2 in the open position.

[0050] The Fig. 6 shows, by way of example, the same bendable needle guard according to the present disclosure on different syringes 21. It can be seen here that the dimensioning of the actuating handle is selected such that a sufficiently widely pivoted position of the protective section 2 in the open position is ensured, so that unhindered use of the respective syringe 21 is guaranteed.
